“Lily, my love, I love you, but you’re too much of a people pleaser sometimes.” Mary shook her head, a hand on her hip while the other held a lollipop she passed onto Lily, who licked it and returned to her.
“I know,” Lily groaned in response, “but what do you want me to say to him? I’m sorry, James, but I don’t have any interest on dick and my girlfriend is hotter anyway?”
Mary snorted. “Yeah, you could say that.”
Lily walked toward the stares and sat on them, Mary sat beside her, and the stares started moving, as they normally did at Hogwarts.
“Today,” Lily continued, “today he said that he’s such a good kisser and that some people don’t know what they’re missing out, and for some reason Remus confirmed that fact. And all I wanted to tell them was that you are the only person I want to kiss and that I am a lesbian, and I still don’t like dick and… Oh my god this is so frustrating. Why am a like this? Why can’t he just get it?” Lily leaned on Mary’s shoulder.
“Because you are worried to lose him as a friend. Because as dumb as he may be, you care for each other deeply.” Mary patted Lily’s hair and offered her lollipop again. Lily refused it.
“I don’t want to break his heart.”
“He’ll get over it, Evans! He has too.” She turned and made Lily look to her face. “Besides, I really want us to be out in public. Half of the entire school is queer anyway.”
“And people are starting to get suspicious over how long you’ve been single.” Lily joked.
“Yeah, that too. I have a reputation to keep.”
Lily stood up on a sudden move, starting Mary. “Okay, let’s do this.”
“Like… right now?” Mary stood next to her.
Lily didn’t answer. Instead, she lifted her wand to her lips and started speaking, her voice, magnified by a spell, vibrating through the whole castle.
“Attention students,” she started, “I, Lily Evans, have an announcement to make.” She cleared her throat. “James, I’m so sorry to do this this way but I owe you for burning my hair last semester. Thank you for the haircut though, it really suits me having it short.”
She looked at Mary then, who returned her stare with pure disbelief in her eyes. She smiled at her.
“I am a lesbian, and I am dating Mary Macdonald.” She broke into a grin. “Thank you for your time and consideration.”
After a beat in which no sound was heard, Sirius voice bounced over the walls as Lily’s had done. “Lily you are an angel, we love you thank you so much for finally rejecting him but–” Sirius’ voice abruptly stopped and got exchanged for James’.
“Lily congratulations on your wedding I’m so happy for you, hon, but I got over you last year,” Sirius laugher could be heard on the distance, “We can discuss this later more… privately”. His voice faded into laugher as Lily’s cheeks turned pink.
Lily turned to Mary, who stared at her with her lips pursed and an apologetic smile. “Did you know this?”
“I think I know who James’ new crush is too. That’s why I started this conversation on the first place, I just didn’t anticipate you would be so extra about it. But I swear I wouldn't have done it if I though you weren't”
“I would kill you if I wasn’t in love with you.”
“Sorry? I just thought that you needed a little push, like you were waiting for some kind of sign–”
Lily scooped Mary’s face and kissed her, lollipop long forgotten.
There were students watching them who had gotten out of their classes to see what the fuss was about, but they did not care about the audience. It was their first time having one after all.
They melted into each other’s arms and got lost on lips and skin and soft moans.
Let them all watch.
