Chapter Four
Chapter Four
Riley-Ann was officially the only girl at Hogwarts who didn't have a date to the Sadie Hawkins Dance, at least In her mind.
That cold Autumn chill was still there as Riley and her friends made their way outside to get some fresh air. Riley was telling Marlene and Lily all about her encounter with Remus Lupin after Magical Music class.
"He really apologized that many times?" asked Lily.
"Yeah. He felt bad. Who wouldn't?" Riley asked.
Lily and Marlene stared at her questioningly waiting for her to get what they were thinking.
"Right. Potter. Black."
"I still can't believe you don't have a date yet, Ri," Lily huffed as she sat down on a bench in the middle of the courtyard. Riley shrugged and sat down next to her.
Marlene stood there silent like a deer in headlights, eyes open wide. An almost constipated look spread across her face.
"Oh no" stated Lily.
"That's her idea face isn't it?" Riley said worriedly.
"Yeah" confirmed Lily.
"What is it this time Marlene?" Riley sighed.
"YOU SHOULD ASK REMUS LUPIN TO THE DANCE!" she cried out loudly.
A look that was a mix of shock and horror rose upon Riley-Ann's as she heard what came out of her best friend's mouth. Marlene had come up with some crazy ideas in her life but none as crazy as this one.
What the heck was she thinking?
Riley-Ann looked over at Lily, who was in a state of deep thought.
"I mean......it's not such a bad idea?" Lily suggested.
"WHAT!" Riley-Ann Shrieked.
"Think about it, Ri. This is your first dance, You know Remus. you trust him and you are not close enough friends for it to be weird" Lily reasoned.
"Plus you think he has nice features" Marlene said, wiggling her eyebrows.
"What makes you think that?" Riley questioned, still trying to slow down her breathing.
"I've read your diary. Duh" stated Marlene as she rolled her eyes.
"What? Marlene, I am going to kill you!" Riley-Ann shouted.
Lily stands up from the bench and stands in between them to make sure they don't start strangling each other or something.
"Calm down ladies!" said Lily.
"You shouldn't have left the thing lying around, Ri," Marlene said snarkily.
"First of all it's not a diary, it's a journal, and second it was locked in my truck!" Riley shouted.
"Fine sorry" apologized Marlene.
“Ugh”
"Still think you should ask Remus to the dance though" Marlene sighs.
"Marlene." Riley huffed, rolling her eyes.
"Come on. You need a date and Remus is a really good guy" assured Lily.
"I don't know. But I promise I'll think about it."
***
Three days had passed since Marlene's "Great" idea and the dance was officially less than two weeks away. If Riley didn't get a date now, there would be no one left to go with.
Riley thought over the prospect of going to the dance with Remus. Marlene had talked to Sirius and found out he still didn't have a date either. Remus wasn't a bad guy, she just had never thought about him in that way before.…okay maybe she had a little but it was still a little weird.
Remus was a sweet guy, he was super smart, and funny but Riley didn't know much else about the guy. He was also friends with those boys who shall not be named. The guys who tripped first years and played pranks on other students. How could she go out with someone like that? Her parents would kill her. But it was only a dance after all, what's the worst that could happen? it's not like she planned on marrying the guy.
Maybe she should ask Remus to the dance........
"RI RI!"
Riley lost her train of thought when Marlene came bursting into the dorm with Lily right behind her.
"What?" Riley groaned.
"We're gonna go try to sneak into Hogsmeade! Wanna come?" Marlene asked.
"You okay Ri?" Lily questioned.
"Yeah. Just thinking" said Riley.
Marlene gasped. "About Remus!" she said, wiggling her eyebrows with a big googly eyed look.
Riley rolled her eyes. "Yeah. I was thinking....maybe I will ask him"
Marlene let out a loud squeal and Lily a small laugh.
"COME ON LET'S GO!" Marlene shouted as she grabbed Riley's arm.
"WHERE ARE WE GOING" Riley Shrieked.
"To ask Remus to the dance! Duh!" Marlene exclaimed.
***
The sight of Marlene dragging the two Gryffindor girls away somewhere was a common occurrence that many students at Hogwarts had learned not to wonder too much about.
As Riley-Ann was being dragged down multiple flights of moving stairs by Marlene, she thought about what she'd just gotten herself into. Marlene had never in her life had a single good idea, ever.
If this idea went as terrible as the others, what would Riley do? Or worse if Marlene was right and it did work out she'd lord it over Riley forever!
Riley-Ann took a deep breath to calm herself as Marlene pulled her and Lily outside to the courtyard. Marlene motioned toward the group of fifth year boys laughing at a first year running away with some kind of green sludge on his head.
Riley-Ann stared at the tall, sandy haired boy who still hadn't noticed them standing there.
Oh boy. Here we go.
Marlene shoved Riley into the direction of the boys. Riley took another deep breath and walked toward them.
"Hey guys" she greeted Nervously.
Sirius Black looked over towards her and a wide grin appeared on his face.
"Hey Moony! It's the girl you assaulted!" Sirius exclaimed.
Remus turned around and when he saw who Sirius was talking about, he became slightly embarrassed of his friend.
"Well hello Deveraux! Did Lily send you to tell me she's finally going to ask to go to the dance with me?" James Potter said snarkily, he had a slight lisp in his voice today.
Riley rolled her eyes at him.
"Actually, I'm here to talk to Remus," stated Riley nervously.
"What about, Deveraux?" Remus asked kindly. The four boys grew very curious expressions.
"Well..." she started looking down towards the ground as a slight blush began to appear on her face.
"Yes?"
"I was wondering....if you would like to go to the dance....with me?"
Riley-Ann looked up at Remus's shocked expression.
Before he could say anything James started coughing loudly, almost like he was choking.
"You alright, Potter?" Riley questioned, not all that concerned.
James began to breathe Heavily.
"Fine!" he choked out.
Riley looked back towards Remus, his expression was blank as he stared at Riley-Ann.
"Well aren't you gonna give the girl an answer, Moony?" Sirius queried.
Remus snapped out of his dazed expression and gave Riley-Ann a small smile. He then looked over at Sirius.
"The dance is on a full moon Padfoot!" he whispered.
"So! The moon doesn't come out till' late that night" Sirius whispered back.
Riley-Ann couldn't tell what they were saying, but figured it must have been something rather important to Remus.
Remus looked away from Sirius and back at Riley-Ann, noticeably blushing.
"Um okay.…I'd like that!" he answered nervously.
"Okay. Good. I'll talk to you later" Riley-Ann said happily turning around as a huge smile formed upon her face.
Riley-Ann walked back to her friends who saw the expression on her face and began to jump up and down giddily, knowing what it meant.
"Am I going crazy, or did Riley-Ann Deveraux just ask Moony to the Sadie Hawkins Dance" James stated.
"You are definitely not going crazy, Prongs" Sirius said as he placed his hand on a stoic Remus's shoulder.
