An Interesting Lecture

Spock was giving a guest lecture in Captain Pike’s class. Many students were frantically taking notes. If they’d just learn better memory techniques, they would be able to pay better attention. A few students were hanging on every word. And several were staring toward the front of the room with glazed, unfocused eyes.

A black swirling vortex materialized six feet to Spock’s left.

In a calm, loud voice, Spock ordered all cadets to leave the room. The students didn’t look bored anymore.

Spock backed away from the vortex slowly, relieved that it didn’t follow him.

Pike was on his communicator.

“Captain Pike. We must not approach. I believe this is the same phenomenon that took my–”

Spock was cut off by a body falling out of the vortex. The black, swirling mass blinked out of existence.

The person on the floor groaned. Spock cataloged what he could see: humanoid, naked, thin, female, dark hair.

“Who are you?” asked Spock.

The girl’s head shot up. She scrambled away, back to a wall, trying to catch her breath. It sounded like she was in pain. Her arms and long hair shielded her body somewhat from view.

“Where am I?” she gasped.

Spock inched forward. “You’re at Starfleet Academy. How did you get here?”

“Starfleet? Where’s–” The girl couldn’t catch her breath.

Spock leaned down, cradled her to his chest, hit his communicator, and said, “Two to beam to the emergency department of the hospital. There is an immediate airway issue.”

They were transported to a flurry of activity. Spock stood back. After several injections from a hypospray, the girl’s breathing eased.

Spock stared at her ears. She was Vulcan. Was it possible? He rejected all emotion. He would not react before acquiring data.

“Doctor. Please run a genetic scan for identification,” Spock said.

The doctor nodded. “It will take a while to check the complete database.”

Spock couldn’t tear his eyes away from the girl. “Compare her to my DNA first.”

The doctor’s head jerked up. “You think she’s–”

“Family.”

She was still unconscious.

Spock kept her in his peripheral vision while reading over the medical report again. It was illogical to re-read it. The contents would not change.

Several minutes ago, he sent a message to his parents, requesting they gather in one room for a call. His pad beeped. They were ready.

He called his parents over subspace.

“Hello, Spock,” said Amanda with a smile.

“Mother. Father,” he replied.

Sarek nodded.

“I have urgent news.” Spock paused. “Please verify that your medical monitors are functioning.”

Amanda raised an eyebrow, but both indicated their medical devices were adequate. Spock knew this news would shock even the stoic Sarek, but he would not risk more tragedy.

“You must come to Earth,” said Spock.

“Are you healthy? What is wrong?” demanded Amanda.

“I am in perfect health,” said Spock. “My sister is alive and in this room. She is back. Your daughter.”

Spock leaned over the bed so the camera showed the sleeping girl.

Amanda let out a cry.

Sarek looked to be made of stone. “We will be on the next transport. What is her status?”

“Given the…circumstances…the doctors have not released her medical file. But they assured me that she is not in medical danger. After the black vortex–” Spock paused as Amanda gasped. “After the vortex released her in my lecture today, she had an issue breathing, but that was quickly resolved by the emergency medical personnel. She is lightly sedated as her body adjusts to the medicine.”

“That…vortex…thing came for you today?” Amanda sounded petrified.

“It returned her to us. She is alive. She is alive.”

“We will send you updates on our travel. We will see you tomorrow. Son.” With that, Sarek ended the call.

Spock lowered the pad and turned his gaze back to the sleeping girl.

The black vortex had taken her away as a baby, and shattered his family in the process. And now she was back. His sister.
