The wixen in Europe and North America seem to only recognise Arcane and Hereditary sources of magic and even go so far as classifying them as the one type of Magic. What they don't recognise are the six different sources of magic, of which there are three separate categories and two orientations (spells can be a third, neutral, orientation, but I have yet to find any sources of magic that fall under this category). I have drawn up a table to list them and explain where they fall.
Mystical | Dimensional | Temporal | |
Light | Divine | Arcane | Natural |
Dark | Infernal | Eldritch | Hereditary |
Different sources of magic tend to interact strangely with each other. Divine, Arcane, and Natural magic are directly opposed to their Dark counterparts (and vice-versa), which makes complete sense, but they interact strangely with magic from other categories. Where Arcane magic mitigates the effects of Eldritch magic, but when faced against magic from other categories the results can be rather chaotic. I’ve taken to describing interactions with magic of the same orientation as concordant, due to the fact that they seem to boost each others’ effects, and interactions with the opposing orientation as discordant, due to the lack of predictability in the effects.
Grevillea
Owners of Grevillea wands are known to be supportive people and often help maintain order within their friend groups and other various social circles. Grevillea wand owners tend to be more fragile than others however, and generally react worse to stress and shock. Grevillea wands excel at transfiguration and healing spells, but require precise wand movements to fully utilise their abilities. Wands made with this wood are often found to react negatively with wixen who are not their original owner. Grevillea wands are not capable of casting dark spells and work especially poorly for users with dark-oriented magical sources.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus wand owners are found to be resilient and adaptable. They can often have quite large and disruptive personalities, and prefer to be in the presence of those with warmer dispositions. Eucalyptus wands are best suited to charms and defensive spells, and are quite forgiving with wand movements and incantations. These wands tend to work well even for those who are not their owner, however they perform best with wixen who are less powerful overall. These wands are capable of performing light, grey, and dark magic, with a tendency to perform better with neutral-oriented spells. Eucalyptus wands perform poorly when handled by users of Dimensional magic.
Lemon Myrtle
Lemon Myrtle wands generally choose wixen with contradictory personality traits, a sweet-sour contrast being their preferred match. These wands are adept at boosting the power of magical orientations that directly conflict with their user’s magical source and perform equally well for any magical source or orientation. Lemon Myrtle wands are proficient at all types of spells but excel at curses, jinxes, and hexes. Wands made with Lemon Myrtle are quite temperamental and are unlikely to work with others who are not the original owner unless they have a similar personality.
Wattle
Similar to their cousins, Wattle wands refuse to work for anyone but their owner, but unlike Acacia wands, they will lend their power to wixen whose magical source is primarily Dimensional, and have a penchant for dramatics. Wattle wands are also, like their relatives, especially adept at subtle magics such as charms. Due to the nature of this wood it is ill-advised to pair it with a dragon heartstring or veela hair core. Wattle wands tend to favour light and neutral-oriented spells, but are not incapable of casting dark spells if necessary.
Australian Pine
A relative of the European Pine, the Australian Pine shares many attributes with its European counterpart. These wands choose wixen who are independent and often perceived as a loner. Australian Pine wands generally choose quieter wixen and seem to especially enjoy being used creatively. Australian Pine also shares with its relative the ability to foretell when a wixen is destined to have a long lifespan. These wands are particularly fond of wixen with Temporal magic, and are adept at non-verbal magic.
Frangipani
Frangipani wands are known to choose wixen who have a dramatic or flamboyant flair and will not settle for the mundane. Frangipani wands are also known to choose wixen who aspire to be great. These wands are notorious for being especially adept in the hands of light-oriented wixen but performing poorly in the hands of dark-oriented wixen. They are also notable for not forming strong attachments to their owner, and multiple Frangipani wands have been found back in the possession of wand-makers with no explanation as to how they got there. Frangipani wands are best put to use doing charms and transfiguration.
Banksia
Banksia wands are known for not getting along well with their owners at first but once a bond is formed, are fiercely jealous and will refuse to work with their owner after they’ve used another wand. Banksia wands typically end up in the hands of dark-oriented wixen, but are strangely averse to casting dark magic. They are adept at curses and defensive spells, while being infamously terrible at healing magic due to their aggressive nature. Banksia wands have never been known to perform for any wixen other than their original owner.
