Chapter 8
Amora and Loki glance around at the office they're in - they're setting themselves up with a new set of identities for the modern world, having figured it'd be good to have in case either one of them wants to take a break from Asgard and its constant bigotry once more. Amora's been taking great pleasure in making Sif suffer in small ways, having become rather vindictive towards the woman for her treatment of her Soulmate - and, yes, she's perfectly allowed to do so considering the tiny little detail that, upon people learning she's Loki's Soulmate she'll automatically become a bloody princess - but eventually the two of them are going to get tired of Hexing her in increasingly-hilarious ways.
And, considering the mess Magical Britain is even now three years after Voldemort's death, the detail that the Nonmagical people are getting much more advanced than the Magicals - at least in Britain - and the general stupidity of the people Amora remembers growing up with, they firmly decided America was where they'd set themselves up this time around. If only to avoid getting dragged back into Britain's problems, and the sheep-mentality of the people - they checked in on everyone Amora cared about, found out Ronald Weasley is an Auror somehow or other, though just barely having passed his entrance exams, Hermione Granger has disappeared from Britain altogether, as did Luna though she left a note for the two of them saying she'd be in touch and in America, Fred and George Weasley are doing better than ever in their shop, Ginny's a Quidditch player for the Holyhead Harpies, Neville's an Herbologist now, and Remus and Nymphadora are living with Andromeda and raising Teddy together.
After discretely checking up on everyone Amora remembers even somewhat fondly from her old life, reinstating Andromeda, Nymphadora, and Teddy into the Black Family and then leaving Teddy the entirety of the fortune, they up and left Britain and never looked back. Didn't even stay long enough for the shitshow that undoubtedly went down at the revelation that the Lady of House Black, through her Paternal Grandmother, just made them all Blacks and made Teddy her Heir and Andromeda the Dowager.
Seraphina Picquery, the head of MACUSA since Grindelwald's time, Apparates in and sits down, a look on her face like she's wondering why the universe hates her so much. "Let me get this straight, you two. You are…Loki, the Norse God of Mischief, and Amora, the Enchantress."
They both nod, finding it hilarious that the Mortals managed to split Amora into two figures in their legends - there's the Enchantress, the master of Magic and unrivaled by almost anyone bar Loki and Queen Freyja, who's actually Frigga. And then there's Sigyn, the dutiful wife of Loki. Considering the detail that they thought he'd given birth to Hela, her pet wolf, Sleipnir, and Jormangundr - which, sister, sister's pet wolf and familiar, horse he created by accident, and Familiar he created via magic - they're honestly amazed they got anything right.
Seraphina looks exhausted as she adds "And you, Amora, were once none other than Hari Potter. Lady of House Potter, Black, and Peverell." Seraphina buries her face in her hands for a moment, quickly deciding which pub she's going to drain dry of every ounce of alcohol once she's out of the office for the day, then sets to work creating two new identities from scratch with the Goblins - one Amory Signi and Luka Friggson. They recreate homeschooling through some standardized testing - magic included, since MACUSA has adapted much better than Britain in terms of hiding. Rather than just hiding, they hide in plain sight - they don't have their own huge areas to themselves, most of the time, so they have to be much more discrete. The MACUSA building itself is one of the biggest exceptions, a Muggle-based business front concealing the massive magical operation going on behind it.
Hence why the two of them chose MACUSA, the whole point of setting up mortal identities is to hide from Asgard if need be - and, while everybody insults the both of them for their chosen interest in magic, nobody has ever dared to call Loki an idiot. They'd all be expecting something ridiculously convoluted, as far from their actual names as possible - again, hiding in plain sight. After what feels like a straight week of organizing everything, the two of them eventually decide they should probably get degrees so that they can blend in better.
Loki, of course, insists they attend Harvard.
Much to Amora's shock, they get accepted.
Hermione Granger is just finishing getting her room in the three-person suite in Harvard set up, and hears two other voices - they must be Amory and Luka, her two suite-mates. When she walks out to say hello, though, she nearly has a heart attack at the sight of who must be Amory - and she straight-up drops the box she was holding.
Thankfully, Luka catches it before it can hit the floor.
Hermione stares at her female suitemate, trying and failing to come up with any words for the Lily Potter lookalike in front of her, until said lookalike incredulously asks "Hermione Granger?" It snaps Hermione out of her shock, and she takes two long strides forward and pushes the red bangs out of the way to reveal the lightning scar on her forehead.
Amora sighs inwardly, even as she pushes Hermione's shell-shocked hand away - she knew she should've covered the Curse Scar up with a Glamor or illusion, or even just concealer, but she hadn't thought she'd come across anyone who would recognize the damned thing in the Muggle World.
Honestly, most of the time she barely even remembers it's there - it hasn't been any kind of issue in well over a Millennia, and most Asgardians are more hung up on the fact that she uses magic than the minor scar on her forehead she usually keeps covered up.
It's a solid minute later that Hermione finally comes out of her shock once more, and she asks "How are you alive?!"
Loki watches semi-warily as Amora and one Hermione Granger - the last of the mortals from her previous life they'd tried to track down, and the only one they couldn't, who'd have thought?! - talk. He very nearly intervened when the brunette went straight for Amora's scar on her forehead, something that used to happen far too often for Amora's liking or his comfort - who in the world pokes and prods at a child's face, trying to touch some scar there as if it's some kind of lucky charm?! - but when nothing else happened he relaxed just a little bit. At the moment, Amora's explaining how the Hallows chose her when she let herself be killed, and that released Hela from her imprisonment in the underworld.
Hermione stares at Amora in shock, and says "Let me get this straight, Hari. You don't go by Hari anymore, since Loki renamed you Amora Sigyn."
"Yeah."
"I'm going to assume that's Loki over there, who you've said is your soulmate."
"Mm-hm."
"You're now over a thousand years old, eternally young, and not human anymore. And, incidentally, a Metamorphmagus."
"Yep, keep going."
"And you two are…what, exactly? Going to get degrees at Harvard?!" If she sounds a little hysterical, it's because she is.
Loki says "We're setting up identities on Midgard once more, in case we ever want to take a break from Asgard's utter stupidity in the near future. What of you?"
Hermione sighs, and says "Britain is utterly ridiculous. Magical Britain, anyway. No matter what i tried, i couldn'tget anywhere...so, I left." As it turns out, Harvard has a magical section...which, in hindsight, is probably how they got accepted do quickly.
Hermione quickly decides to take muggle Psychology and Potions - apparently, without Severus Snape breathing down her neck, Potions has become her passion in life. As opposed to politics, like Amora once thought she'd go into - all the Purebloods that still look down on the Muggleborns world make it hard to get anywhere, though.
Loki rather quickly decides he wants to make things, ending up with Computer Science and Spell Crafting, and Amora finds herself gravitating towards Marketing of all things - less cut-throat than the purely business side of things, and something she can direct her creativity towards. Something Loki's more than supportive of, considering the detail that he's seen her creativity firsthand when they're alone together - Asgard has the rather soul-crushing habit of suppressing things like that. And the magical portion of her new identity's education is Defensive spells, rather than Dueling - she could wipe the floor with anyone in Dueling and they all know it, so it wouldn't be much of a challenge.
Besides, it's not like she can't head to MACUSA afterwards and get a second Mastery in Dueling anyway.
The three of them make sure to stay as roommates for the full four years at Harvard, Hermione convinces Amora to reconnect with Remus and Tonks - they were both so much less than impressed with him for just up and leaving his pregnant wife in the middle of the war - when fifty Owls arrive with letters from the group of them, Loki and Amora become 'Unca Loki' and 'Aunt 'Mora' to four-and-a-half-year-old Teddy after the small family moves to America to escape the still-blatant prejudice, Hela and Hades get similar nicknames and an open invitation to the household, and Loki takes a great delight in making a set of phones capable of not only functioning perfectly well around magic - running on magic - but capable of keeping in contact with one another as far away as another Realm - and, while he tells the two ladies it's just a coincidence he made something they can use to stay in contact with, it's most definitely not and they all know it.
Hermione can only shake her head as he rather gleefully applies it to three sets of laptop computers, phones, and even a pair of televisions. And, if it makes Teddy shriek in glee when the television works like it's supposed to, making him the favorite uncle...well, all the better. At least they can talk every day with the young boy, and not just drop in unannounced whenever they want to visit.
And Luna sends a letter to them, congratulating them on graduating from Harvard and requesting a set of phones for herself and her Fiance Rolf Scamander.
