chapter six
Sirius Black was not having fun at the party. He was definitely supposed to be having fun seeing as it was a party celebrating his and his friend's accomplishments. He was surrounded by everyone important in his life. This should be a core memory for Sirius; yet, Sirius just couldn't find it in himself to feel any ounce of joy or delight. Sirius found himself moping in a corner, just watching everyone around him.
While moping, Sirius started reflecting on the previous events. It was then when Sirius realized exactly what was prohibiting his happiness.
One was Remus Lupin. The same man who Sirius wrote the entire album, which the party was celebrating, about. Sirius just apologized to the man and he was already mad at him all over again. He thought he was prepared to see his ex-fiancé move on and find someone else, but he was quickly proved wrong when Remus walked into Sirius' apartment holding hands with Grant Chapman. The sight hit Sirius like a train. He didn't know if they were dating or just talking, but either way, he was not a fan of the pair together. He watched Grant and Remus greet everyone then settle onto Sirius' couch where the two exchanged whispers and shared glances.
Sirius felt something inside of himself explode. He should be happy for Remus, expect he wasn't. Perhaps Sirius was jealous because he used to be in Grant's shoes, but he would never admit that.
The night of their first album release had been one of the best nights of Sirius' life.
Sirius was sat next to Remus, his boyfriend of two years at the time, on the couch in his apartment while everyone in the band anxiously watched social media soon after their first album dropped.
The whole band hadn't expected all the attention they had received, even before the album dropped. Lily being their manager was one of the best things that happened to them. She knew exactly how to promote the band in the months leading up to the release. If she wasn't their manager, The 1971 would never had made it past one hundred streams on the entire album.
"Oh my god, we're trending on Twitter!" James shouted out from across where Sirius sat. Sirius knew James would be the most excited out of the group due to the fact that James had been dreaming of this day since year one.
"It's almost as if we didn't just release an album thousands of people had been anticipating," Sirius said sarcastically.
"Shut up, nows not the time. We have over five thousand streams on the first song on the track list!" James continued.
"It's only been seven minutes since release though," Remus said, almost confused.
"That's the crazy part, it's only been seven minutes and there's already massive amounts of streams on the album," Sirius answered in awe as he looked at how many streams they had gotten.
"I'm overwhelmed by all of this, I swear I'm having a crazy fever dream," Peter said as he sat next to James.
"Maybe we're all just sharing a dream, so when we wake up tomorrow, none of this will be real," Remus jokingly added.
"Hey, don't joke about that," James said, almost alarmed by what Remus had said.
"Oh god, don't get him worked up," Sirius mumbled.
"Don't let who get what?" Lily asked as she walked in the door.
"Oh hey Lily, we were just talking about how this was all a dream," Remus stated with a smirk of his face.
"Oh yeah! You guys are totally just dreaming, forgot to break the news," Lily joked.
"Stop joking around guys! What if you're actually right? Do you know how horrible that would be?" James began rambling on anxiously after this. "Here we go again," Sirius groaned and buried his head into his hands.
Despite the difference between their first album drop versus now, Sirius wasn't going to let Remus and his new boy-toy ruin his night. Especially after how much work the whole band put into the album. From the difficult process of actually writing the songs to the grueling hours at the studio recording the small chorus over and over, Sirius was going to make sure the band's efforts were not shadowed by his own jealousy tonight.
Sirius began making his rounds to talk to people in an attempt to distract himself from his ex-fiancé and Grant Chapman. To Sirius' relief, he felt his mood improving after a few minutes.
Until Regulus Black walked through the door.
The other problem was, obviously, Regulus Black. God, Sirius couldn't stand the guy. James, on the other hand, was obsessed with Regulus. He never shut up about him, despite only knowing him for a day. Sirius learned through James that Regulus was a part of The Lovefools, the same band Remus was in. Sirius wasn't aware the pair were friends, despite them being friends all throughout his and Remus' relationship.
During their brief conversation, Regulus managed to insult and embarrass Sirius in front of his own friends. Sure, what Sirius said was a bit harsh, but everything said were meant to be taken as jokes.
Sirius bitterly watched James and Regulus talk to each other from his corner. He had no clue how James, the nicest person Sirius, could be obsessed with someone as cruel as Regulus. The two made Sirius believe in the theory of opposites attract even more than he previously did.
"God, who pissed in your cereal?" Lily asked as she gave Sirius a judgementL look. He was so zoned out that he didn't realize she was there until she spoke.
"Too many people," He grumbled. Lily curiously motioned for him to explain. "Remus Lupin, mainly. It's a long story," Sirius explained, his eyes glued to Grant and Remus on his couch.
"Sounds like someone may have some unresolved tension with someone," Lily said with a smirk on her face. She quickly connected the dots and saw Sirius burning holes into the back of Grant and Remus' heads.
"Absolutely not. I'm just mad at Remus because he's all over his little boyfriend on my couch. I mean I'd rather not wash my couch because of him," Sirius replied, sounding unsure of himself. He tore his eyes from the pair.
"I think they're talking to Emmeline and Peter rather than each other. Plus, they're at least two feet away from each other, but whatever you want to believe," Lily pointed to the pair on the couch, who were in fact talking to Emmeline and Peter.
"Of course you're defending him," Sirius huffed in denial.
"I'm not defending him, I'm pointing out the truth. Your reaction to Grant and Remus leads me to believe that you are extremely jealous," Lily shrugged.
"No way, I would never," Sirius said as he rolled his eyes at Lily.
"Uh-huh, sure. I love the confidence in your denial," Lily remarked. Sirius knew he couldn't lie to Lily Evans. She saw through every lie Sirius has tried to tell her, despite his efforts.
"Wow, you're so supportive of me. Thank you Lily," He said bitterly. "It's not just Remus. I'm also mad at James' boyfriend thing, he insulted me!" Sirius groaned as Lily started laughing at his frustration.
"I think everyone heard what he said to you. He definitely wasn't afraid to share his thoughts and feelings at the top of his lungs," Lily commented, amused by the situation.
"I wish people had respect for others nowadays..." Sirius mumbled.
"You're starting to sound like your mother, Sirius," Lily joked which resulted in Sirius lightly shoving her. "I did come over here for a reason, however. It's nearly midnight, meaning we need to do announcements and such so we can play the album for everyone."
Sirius nodded, "Alright captain, I'm on it."
"Please try to get that pout off of your face, I can basically smell the sadness coming from you for miles," Lily said before she walked off to, most likely, prepare everything.
"Wow, thanks," Sirius mumbled. He looked around and saw James in the kitchen, so he decided to try and talk to him. Sirius wanted to attempt to clear the air between himself and James before the album was released. He began to approach James, but was cut off by someone. Sirius groaned and looked up to see the one and only Remus Lupin.
"Hey, I just wanted to catch you before the album dr-" Remus started to say before Sirius completely cut him off.
"You had, what? Two hours since the party started to do that?" Sirius questioned.
"Yeah I know, my bad, but I was just trying to talk to everyone else since it's been a long time since I've spoken to them," Remus tried to explain.
"Really? I'm so sorry you were too busy with your little boyfriend to talk to anyone else," Sirius replied. Remus let out a shocked noise before his face turned sour.
"I can't believe you. Honestly, can you not get over yourself for once?" Remus said before Sirius tried to cut him off once again.
"I-" Sirius began.
"Can you just listen to me without interrupting me for once?" Remus asked in frustration. Sirius closed his mouth. "Thank you. I'm sorry that I was simply trying to catch up with people I've barely seen in the past year because they took your side of our breakup. I genuinely thought we could be grown ups and exist in the same room with each other, but it's quite obvious I thought wrong."
A few moments went by and the two just stared at each other. Sirius was speechless, mainly because he was embarrassed by his previous statements.
Finally, Sirius found words and started speaking, "You're right, I'm an idiot for what I said. I'm really sorry, Remus."
"Right, thank you," Remus responded, his tone sounding less frustrated than before. "Anyways, enough of that. I just wanted to congratulate you and everyone else on the album," Remus said as a small smile appeared on his face.
"Thank you, I appreciate it," Sirius replied and returned the small smile. Before either of the two could say anything else, he saw James exit the kitchen with Lily trailing behind him out of the corner of his eye.
"Looks like you might have to go with them," Remus, who was also looking at James and Lily, said.
"I guess you're right. I'll see you after?" Sirius asked. Remus nodded and went to sit back down on the couch. Sirius made his way to where Lily and the rest of the band stood in front of everyone gathered on the couch.
Once Sirius was in place with the rest of the band, Lily began talking to everyone on the couch. Sirius didn't have a clue what she was saying, but he knew she was probably saying all the right things she needed to as the band's manager.
"Do you guys know what to say after Lily stops talking?" Marlene asked quietly to Peter and Sirius. The two shared a look.
"We usually let James do all the talking," Peter said as both his eyes and Sirius' went to look at Marlene. Marlene raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"He's more hyped about it than any of us. Despite how excited we are, he's always on a whole different level," Sirius explained.
"I mean just look at him," Peter added. The three shifted their gaze to where James was standing next to Lily. He was currently hopping from one foot to the other due to his excitement.
"I see your point," Marlene said quietly as the trio continued to watched him. Suddenly, James turned to look at the rest of the band, who were standing next to him, and found that they were already looking at him.
"Oh, hey guys! I'm so nervous, are any of you nervous? I really hope everyone likes the album, I mean we've worked so hard on it that it's gonna be super disappointing if they don't," James cut himself off. "Sorry, word vomit."
Lily turned towards the band and looked at them expectantly. James whipped his head around and cleared his throat.
"Hi everyone! I know I've probably spoken to all of you already tonight, but I just wanted to say a few more things. I want to thank all of you for being here in support of us and I really, really hope you enjoy the album," James said, smiling brightly. Sirius noticed how James' eyes never left Regulus the whole time James had spoken.
"Alright, time for the best part," Lily announced as she connected her phone to a bluetooth speaker. Everyone on the couch cheered in support and James gathered the whole band into a group hug as their album started playing.
The rest of the night was a blur to Sirius. He was with all of his friends and that's all that mattered to him. He wasn't concerned about Grant being there with Remus, he only focused on singing along to the album.
Sirius closed the door after saying goodbye to the last guest. He walked over to the couch and plopped down. James put his arm around Sirius and leaned onto him as soon as he sat down.
"Successful night, I guess?" Peter asked from where he was lounging on a chair across from James and Sirius.
"I'd say so. I mean, no one died," Marlene joked as she sat down on the other side of Sirius and proceed to lean on him, just like James had.
"I'm pretty sure James died at one point. Did you see how he reacted anytime Regulus spoke?" Peter joked.
"What do you mean?" James questioned. Everyone turned their attention towards James.
"Seriously?" Sirius asked.
"Everyone except you seemed to take note that you looked like you were in love every time he merely blinked in your direction," Marlene pointed out.
"I did not look like that when he was around, stop making stuff up," James grumbled.
"Regulus, you're so funny! I could listen to your jokes forever," Sirius made his voice higher as he tried to mock James.
"Please marry me Regulus! It doesn't matter that I've only known you for twenty-four hours, love at first sight exists for a reason!" Marlene fake pleaded as she grabbed Sirius' face.
"Not funny guys!" James said as he reached to grab a pillow and began hitting both Marlene and Sirius with it.
"Okay, okay! We get it," Sirius yelled out while he tried to defend himself and Marlene. James stopped hitting them and had a pleased look on his face. He then plopped back down onto Sirius. Marlene resumed her spot where she lounged on Sirius as well.
"Jesus, I didn't know I was a pillow now, oh my god," Sirius said. He was practically buried by James and Marlene.
"Deal with it," James mumbled. Marlene let out a noise of agreement. Both seemed to half asleep on top of Sirius.
"How can guys go from wide awake to almost out of it in seconds?" Sirius asked under his breath, which resulted in someone elbowing him in the ribs. "Ouch, alright, I get it!"
All of a sudden, Lily barged into the living room from the kitchen. She seemed to be panicking as she rambled nonsense. Everyone jolted up from their previous positions, concerned about what Lily was going on about.
"I'm going to kill all of you one day. Have any of checked Twitter?" Lily asked as soon as she was in front of everyone. The band rushed to get their phones to figure out what happened. "Each of you better have a damn good explanation for what's happening," Lily said angrily.
"Rita fucking Skeeter," Peter said under his breath.
Sirius gasped when he saw what Lily was talking about. It was Rita Skeeter's new article that included some of The 1971's private tweets. Some of those included were horrible and were most likely never supposed to see the light of day.
@padshousewife (locked): every membet of the lovefools should be locked up
@padshousewife (locked): But holy HELLLLL regulus black .... i needhim so bad.
Sirius looked at James, whose jaw was on the floor.
"The second one is true, I mean even Regulus knows that," James said as he awkwardly laughed. Everyone groaned in response to him.
"But the second?" Lily questioned.
"I didn't say that one, she cropped the rest out! I said they were all hot as fuck," James scrambled to say. Sirius continued reading.
@crazygirl (locked): i need dorcas meadowes to break every bone in my body but like in a sexualway Ykwim...
Sirius let out a laugh. He knew that tweet wasn't edited, it sounded too much like what Marlene would actually say.
"Did you actually tweet this, Marlene?" Peter asked. Marlene nodded in embarrassment.
"Jesus, you all need intensive therapy," Lily muttered.
@ratfromratatouille (locked): sirius just hooked up with a remus lupin DUUUPPPEEE to please the fans
Now that one, Sirius knew hadn't been edited. It was a joke, yet it seemed that Rita wasn't aware of that.
"Sirius, what the hell?" Lily asked, small laughs escaping her despite her efforts to keep them in.
"I didn't actually fuck someone and say it was a Remus Lupin dupe! Peter and I were just messing around," Sirius said.
"Alright then," Marlene said slowly in disbelief.
@prongshusband (locked): god damn sometimes our fans are awful
Sirius knew the last tweet. It was after he and Remus broke up and fans made the term "WolfStar" trend for nearly a week on Twitter. He had said that in the tweet, but Rita had cropped the ending to make him look bad.
"Something has to be up, I don't remember tweeting exactly what the article said I did," Marlene commented.
"I agree, it looks like parts are taken out," Peter said as he nodded in support of what Marlene said.
"That slimy bitch! Rita edited all of these, now that I'm comparing them to the tweets on your actual accounts," Lily exclaimed.
"Why would she do this when we can easily prove we didn't do anything?" Marlene asked.
"Rita always does something like this to big artists before a huge album release. I guess she tries to get the spotlight off of them, but I'm not sure," James said after being silent for a few minutes. "If our fans are familiar with her, they'll know to wait until we make a statement."
"Let's hope so, or else we're destroyed," Peter commented.
Sirius began checking all of his social medias. While the article had been up for around two hours, it seemed like he had lost only around two thousand followers.
"Not much damage for me," Sirius said. Everyone else seemed to agree, which was a relief for himself and Lily. Before any celebration could happen, Sirius saw that he got a text from Remus.
"Oh god," He mumbled. James curiously looked over his shoulder as he opened the message.
Remus Lupin has unblocked you.
Remus Lupin: hope u and the band are well, rita is a bitch
im rlly hoping those are fake i dont think u guys would ever say most of those things w/o context
"At least this whole ordeal got Remus to unblock you," James laughed.
"I guess that's true," Sirius admitted.
Sirius Black: hi remus ty for the unblock
we are fine
but yeah There's context trust me
Remus Lupin: hope u dont mind me making jokes on twitter about the dupe
Sirius Black: WHAT
"Stop obsessing of your ex-fiancé and come be my emotional support while I deal with my higher ups and forming a statement to put out," Lily said from where she sat with her computer on the couch.
"But-" Sirius was immediately cut off.
"Do not tempt me to leave you guys hanging with no official statement from the band's account," Lily threatened.
"Aye aye, captain," Sirius said as he and James made their way over to Lily and everyone else.
