Chapter 1
You knocked on the door three times, before it swung open to reveal a wizard with a long white beard wearing a stylish robe designed with constellations.
"Ah, Madam (Y/LN), I'm glad you made it. We have something to discuss." Dumbledore says his tone graver than his usual flamboyant style. You have been working at Hogwarts for 12 years, ever since your boyfriend was imprisoned for the murder of your two best friends. You had been put on trial and argued that Sirius would never do such a thing, but no one believed. Some people thought you secretly helped him, others thought you were a stupid witch who was too dumb to realize they were dating a murderer. Dumbledore believed you though, that's why he set you up with this job so you could restabilize yourself after your world fell apart. You would always be in Dumbledore's debt.
You sit down, unsure of what Dumbledore called you to his office for. The school year would be starting soon, and most teachers had not arrived yet, but you lived at Hogwarts mostly. You couldn't bear to go back to your old home- the one you shared with Sirius- the guilt was too much after a while and chose Hogwarts as a permanent residence.
"I'm afraid there has been a situation at Azkaban." Your breath hitches at that word.
"Sirius Black has escaped."
You feel all the blood drain from your face, your heartbeat increases, and your palms feel sweaty. You try to speak and realize your throat has gone dry. Dumbledore faces look of sympathy and pity, one you hate but you can't blame. It's hard not to pity the idiot who got their boyfriend locked up for a murder he didn't do. Dumbledore hands you a glass of water, which you gladly take before he continues talking.
"I know this is a surprise for you, but I thought you should hear it from me instead of someone else. This year will be hard for you Madam (Y/LN), many people will be asking questions, if you ever have trouble, you know I will be here. I'm sure you know our friend Remus Lupin will be starting this week, he probably already knows. Take care, Madam YLN. I know you can be strong."
You quickly thank Dumbledore, before walking out of his office and straight to your room. You were shaking all over. He escaped, he was free. You have been waiting for this news, but never thought he would be escaping. You were hoping someone would discover some truth. You knew Sirius didn't do it, but you also had no way to prove he didn't. Pettigrew was dead, but you knew someone else must have done something, Sirius would never murder his friend.
The day all the students arrived you were stationed outside welcoming all the students in. You were holding your breath before meeting eyes with that green colour that once belonged to your best friend. Harry was walking with his friends before seeing you and quickly running over.
"Aunt YN!" Harry yelled before hugging you. You wrapped your arms around the boy, happy to be reunited with the young boy you considered family. You were named Harry's Godmother by Lily; you were so happy when she first told you. To Harry, he believed you to be his only family, and would often talk about running away from the Dursley's. You wanted Harry to live with you, but students can't live at Hogwarts.
You and Harry talk for a bit as he talks about the Knight bus and how he was some monster book that could bite you. You always felt so joyful talking to him, he reminds you so much of his parents. You bid Harry goodbye so him and his friends can finally go eat dinner. You never told Harry about your relationship with Sirius, or how Sirius was named his Godfather by James. You feared Harry wouldn't believe you and think of you how you thought of yourself. You were glad you could take care of Harry as much as you could and were hoping to do more as you've been thinking of moving away from Hogwarts so Harry could have a better place to live.
You were about to return back to the castle when you saw a tall slender man with sand colour hair and long scars dashing across his handsome face. You make a running start towards the man before he engulfs you in the hug you missed so much.
"Remus! My old friend, how have you been?" You beam up at Remus, him always being the tallest of your friends, but also the quietest one too. You missed him so much as he was one of the last ones of all your friends, the last person to remember Sirius for who he was and not who everyone thought he was. You have been writing owls to Remus to convince him to work at Hogwarts, and this year he finally listened.
"I have been better, but I'm glad to see a familiar face." Remus hugs you once more and you have never felt this happy in a long time. You and Remus start to walk back towards the castle, sharing how your lives have been for the past couple of years, how Remus met Harry and saved him from a dementor. You would scold Harry later for not telling you about that. Then Remus asked you if you had heard about Sirius.
"Yes, Dumbledore told me. It's only a matter of time before everyone makes the connections again. I didn't want Harry to find out, to think his Godfather is a murderer, and his Godmother complicit. I think I might need to tell him though before someone else tells him." You say through sighs and a defeated tone.
"I'm sure if Harry is as much like his mother like you say, he would understand." You smile at his words, Lily was always the kindest and most understanding person you have ever met, you miss her so much. You and Remus depart so he can unpack, before you head towards the dining hall where Remus joins you shortly after.
You watch the sorting hat begin to sort the first years into their houses. You remember the day Harry was sorted into Gryffindor, you were so happy that Lily and James' son is following in their footsteps. You recognized Harry instantly that day, looked exactly like his father except for the eyes- your best friends. You and Remus cheer on all the students, especially the Gryffindor's, before Dumbledore enters the center to speak to all the students.
Dumbledore delivers an amazing speech, as usual, where he introduces Remus as the new D.A.D.A. professor, which you stand up to cheer for. Dumbledore announces Hagrid as the new magical creature's teacher, you were so proud. You weren't very close with Hagrid, but he cared for Harry and his friends as much as you did. Dumbledore ends his speech to warn about the dementors, you can feel certain teacher's eyes on you as most of them know they are searching for your boyfriend. Most of the teacher's are old enough they taught you as well, meaning they also knew about your closeness with Sirius.
The rest of dinner carried on with mostly no issues, except for some looks from Snape. You couldn't quite tell if they were of pity or disgust, most likely both. Snape has always been a tricky one to figure out. You were never cruel to him like your friends had been growing up, but you did date one of his bullies and were best friends with the girl he was in love with.
Remus walked you back to your room after dinner and parted with a comforting hug. You heard a couple knocks at your door before opening to reveal three students.
"Ah why isn't it my three least favorite students." You proclaim to the young teens. Harry and Ron laugh while Hermione has genuine worry on her face as they walk in, you quietly reassure the girl she is actually one of your favorites. Ron and Hermione sit down on the couch in the corner of your room as Harry gives you another hug. You kiss the top of his head and let him know how much you missed him, before he returns the comment.
"So, what is this I hear about a dementor attack? And your aunt Marge being blown up at a dinner?" You say as you place your hands on your hips in a typical maternal fashion. Harry face goes pale before shooting a cheesy grin at you, the same one James had whenever he was caught doing something he shouldn't have. You learned of Harry's aunt by a tipsy Dumbledore.
"Sorry I didn't tell you YN, I was just so happy to see you I forgot everything else!" Harry says trying to get out of trouble. You give him a look letting him know he wasn't going to get off that easily. Harry sighs before continuing his story.
He tells you about how his aunt Marge came over for dinner and began trashing his parents which caused him to blow her up on accident, you could understand that anger after so many years of hearing people say things about Sirius. Harry was telling you about how he drove on the Knight bus, and how insane it was, when a part of his story caught you.
"You saw a black dog? How big was it? Did it get near you?" You quickly ask. Harry looked puzzled as to why that would be the thing you questioned, looking to Ron and Hermione for support. You reassure the boy it meant nothing; he couldn't know. But if that was Sirius that means he is trying to get to Harry. You let Harry continue his story not wanting to interrupt him anymore.
"Y/N do you know who Sirius Black is?" You feel the color drain from your face. You look at Harry searching for something in his eyes to see if he knows, but it looks like general curiosity. Most likely overheard about the first Azkaban escape. You wipe your hands on your pants, realizing how sweaty they feel.
"Um yeah he was at Hogwarts the same time I was, but I heard he escaped from Azkaban." You were quickly bombarded with questions about if he seemed evil and what he did to go to Azkaban. You tried to dismiss the questions saying you didn't know him well and that you didn't remember what he did. You knew the kids were just curious but if they keep asking around, they might find out your connection to him, so you tell them it's best just to leave the subject alone.
The kids stay around for another hour with peaceful conversations catching up with each other. You bid the kids goodnight, shooshing them out the door before giving Harry a hug goodnight and telling them to stay safe.
You go to your bathroom and stare at yourself in the mirror, you'll have a lot more questions soon. You think about if Sirius might come to see you. You scold yourself for thinking about yourself, Sirius just escaped from prison, and you were worried about yourself. You missed more than anything, not living since he left, but all you could wish for now was his safety. You dress for bed before staring at your window and reminiscing on old memories and happier times.
