“Wait, so the black isn't despair? It's hope? I'M the black part of Monokuma?” Chiaki tilted her head, looking down at the Kurokuma hoodie Junko had sewed her.

Junko stomps her feet, her own Shirokuma hoodie doing nothing to hide how she puffs her cheeks, “Chiaki-senpai, have you not been paying attention to me at all?!”

“Sorry…”

“Ugh, I'll explain it again then!” She huffed, looking away. “I'm despair, and you're hope. You got that?”

“Yes, I got that part,” Chiaki rolled her eyes, “But why is despair white and hope black?”

“I'm getting there! …There's a thin line that divides such things, you know. Hope is—I don't have to tell you how I view hope, do I?”

“You hate it.”

“No, no, no—I need it, and it needs me. You can't hope for something without despair, and you can't despair unless you had hope. They're symbiotic! Pure white despair, alluring and innocent, and pitch black hope—hope only exists to make the lows of despair hit all the harder!”

“Or maybe,” Chiaki says, “Despair only exists to make the highs of hope soar higher.”

“Kyahhh!” Junko squeals, “See, you get it, even if you're a bit misguided—we need each other, Chiaki-senpai! We're symbiotic.” She repeats. “We enhance each other.” Then, she paused. “Besides… a hope that's built upon human suffering… is that not a cruel hope? No matter what you say, hope has always been used to justify the worst of the worst. Just look at Izuru-senpai. Just look at Nagito-senpai. Just look all around you, in the godforsaken school! Hope has never been pure—it has always been written in blood.”

“...Maybe.” Chiaki puffs her cheeks. “But I don't think it's wrong to hope. I don't think all hope is like that.”

“Well, I do.” Junko says simply. “And I find it massively helpful in manipulating chumps like your classmates and the reserve course! So: you're hope, I'm despair. Kurokuma hoodie for you, Shirokuma for me. Both are a part of a larger whole; both are how this whole operation happens in the first place.”

“...” Chiaki sighed. “What a monochrome world you're living in.”

Junko winked. “And I want nothing else, baby!” She grinned, “Now, how about you go get changed?”
