The Wand Chooses The Wizard
As the group continued on into the main square of Diagon Alley, it was rather easy to spot the wand shop they intended to enter. Hagrid bit his lip looking back at the other two, "Are ye sure this is where ye want to go first?" Hagrid asked with a raised eyebrow.
Azalea nodded, "If we wait much longer the store will become crowded with students and their parents looking for their first wands," she stated matter of factly, "In case you haven't noticed Harry and I don't do well in crowds and we'll want to be out of there before that happens."
Hagrid nodded his head quickly, not willing to get on the woman's bad side, and was also quick to lead them to the shop they'd been aiming for. Right after they'd stepped inside Hagrid was surprised to have Azalea suddenly turn on him and hold her hand out expectantly. "Wha-" was the only thing he was able to get out before being cut off.
"I waited until we were off the street to be both polite and discrete," Azalea stated in a civil tone, "However I will not be leaving my son's vault key with you or the headmaster," her tone once more left no room for argument, "Hand it over please." Hagrid stood still for a moment, doing a very good fish impression, but soon he paused. He remembered hushed conversations between James, Sirious, Remus, and McGonigal. Conversations about Dumbledoor and the way he expected Sirious to simply hand over the Black fortune without a fuss.
"Right," Hagrid gave a hesitant chuckle, "Silly me." Azalea smiled at him, a look that told him he'd done the right things and saved himself some pain, before taking the now offered key.
"Alright Harry lets-" the feel of a sharp whirlwind interrupted her, alerting everyone present to the fact Harry had just tried a wand. Azalea scurried over to Harry's side, and Hagrid promptly decided it would be safer elsewhere and snuck out of the shop. "Harry I thought we said you'd wait for me," she stated to the boy, giving Olivander himself a curt nod.
"Sorry Mum," Harry stated with a blush, "I got excited."
Azalea sighed but smiled, "I know baby, I know." Azalea looked up to meet Olivander's eyes, and was startled by the appraising look she was receiving.
"You never received one of my wands," he stated matter of factly, before giving a soft smile, "Probably for the best, I don't think anything I normally sell would fit you well," at that statement he actually got a funny look on his face, "Normally sell," he whispered then his eyes lit up, "Wait right there please I have an idea!" Before either mother or son could say anything, both were surprised to watch the old man sprint into the back of his store, they gave each other curious looks, which soon turned into ones of concern when they began to hear crashes and bangs from where the owner had disappeared.
"Mum?" Harry whispered with a concerned raise of his eyebrows.
"I know baby," Azalea whispered back, flashbacks to her own grandmother's eccentric ways, "I know."
Not even a minute later Olivander returned a large smile on his face and two wand boxes in his hands. "None of my cores seemed to like you my dear boy!" he stated as if it was the happiest thing in the world, Harry's heart started to fall before Olivander continued, "But as luck would have it I have two wands from a friend of mine in America!" he took the first wand out of it's box, "Let's try this shall we?" Harry had barely touched the wand before it flew out of his hand, landing directly in front of Azalea. "Interesting!" Olivander exclaimed, "Pick it up dear, pick it up!"
Azalea did as he asked and picked up the wand, surprised when a rush of belonging washed over her, "That is a special wand, Thunderbird feather with a Snallygaster heartstring core, Alder wood, about 8" in length, rather rigid but that is to be expected of an Alder, perfect for dueling or self defense!" Azalea looked up at Ollivander after his explanation, then back down at the wand she knew would be her second.
"Well I guess we'll take it," she stated with a laugh, "Now about Harry's?"
Olivander nodded, "Right right, at first I thought he would fit the twin to the wand that," he paused and gestured in the direction of Harry's forehead, "Well you know," he finished. "And it looked like a good fit," he paused and gave a wild smile, "At first, before the well," now he motioned to the mess around them, "You saw that rejection." They both nodded, clearly confused about where this was heading, "So I figured I'd try these, now then," he handed Harry the second wand.
"Wow," Harry whispered as the wand glowed lighty for a second, a sign that it was indeed a match.
Olivander smiled and nodded, "That is also from America, Horned Serpent horn core, Applewood, about 9 1/2" in length, quite bendy yet still firm, perfect for a wizard who can connect with others."
Harry looked up at Azalea slightly confused, but Azalea just laughed, "We'll take them both." she started pulling out her purse. That day they left Olivander's with two new wands, and a new outlook on the day. After that shopping seemed to speed up, they blew through potion ingredients, picking up the extra things Azalea had talked about, and before she knew it they were sitting in the robe shop for Harry to get fitted. He'd just been taken back and Azalea had been left in the waiting room with another woman, presumably the mother of the other boy Azalea could hear talking to Harry in back.
Both women shared a smile and soft laugh at the excited chatter they could make out, "Sounds like they're getting along well," the other woman stated, laying the book she'd been reading down.
"Yes it does," Azalea answered her, clearly surprising her by the sound of her voice, "Sorry about that," she stated, "I keep forgettin' how awkward the accent is at first," she gave a soft laugh as the other mother tried to stutter out a refusal, "It's alright," Azalea laughed putting her out of her misery, "I know it's weird, I grew up in America, around the Appalachian mountains."
The other woman's eyes lit up, "I've always wanted to go but my husband is such a," she paused, "Well it'd be impolite to say since he's not her to defend himself," Azalea joined her in the giggles that caused, "If you don't mind my saying," the woman continued instead, "You seem rather young to have a child ready to go to Hogwarts, what is your secret?"
Azalea gave a soft laugh again, "I probably would be if I'd given birth to one," she smiled, "He was left on my doorstep at a little over a year old, and I couldn't leave him." the other woman placed a hand over her heart.
"My word, what," she paused clearly trying to decide if it would be rude to ask, but before she could Harry came storming through with his robes over his arm and a scowl on his face. Azalea and the other mother shared a quick look, before Azalea scurried off to pay and catch up with her son.
"Harry what was that about?'' When she'd finally caught up with him where he and Hagrid were now standing together in front of the shop, Harry was now holding a large sweater with the Irish National Quidditch Team logo on the front.
Harry scowled, "He made fun of Hagrid," he stated, before the scowl slowly fell, and I really was hoping he could be my first wizard friend." Azalea quickly wrapped him in a hug.
"Oh baby, I'm sorry," she kissed the top of his head, "Why don't we head over to the pet shop and get you an owl or a cat to join you at Hogwarts?" he gave a small nod, still clearly dejected bout the other boy, "Hey," he looked up," It'll be okay, his mother said he's going to Hogwarts too, so there's a chance you can see him there, okay?" Harry nodded, his smile slowly returning.
"Okay, thanks Mum!" he beamed at her and grabbed her hand as they started walking towards the pet shop.
"Not a problem baby," she whispered, "Not a problem at all."
As they looked around the pet shop Azalea noticed two things, one was that Harry kept being drawn back to a small little corn snake with the name 'Flash' embossed on his cage, and two was that a pure white catlike Kneazle, she'd researched them after she discovered her original wand had a wisker as part of it's core, with ice blue eyes was following Harry around, the name 'Hedgwig' embossed on the collar she wore. The Kneazle barely looked two months old, still a kitten/cub by any standard, yet the way she watched Harry was clear, she would protect this boy. Azalea gave a soft smile before grabbing the attention of a nearby attendant, "Excuse me how much for the corn snake and white Kneazle kitten?"
"Is that what she is?' the attendant asked with a squint, "Huh paperwork says cat." Azalea laughed.
"Better for me," she stated with a smile, "She'll be going to school with my son." This earned her another shrug and the total, she quickly paid and walked over to Harry. "Ready to take them home?" she asked looking down at where he was talking to Flash, Harry looked up at her with a startled and confused look.
"Them?" he finally asked, making Azalea laugh, before she pointed down at Flash, and then over Harry's shoulder at where Hedgwig was attempting to be a white shadow. His excited yell may have hurt her ears and startled a few animals, but the smile on his face was worth it a hundred times over.
