The Worst Happens
Half an hour passes and you have lost count of how many bodies you have carried. You are currently carrying one covered with a tarp, and Ginny is helping. You haven’t seen Tonks in this whole time, and you’re starting to get nervous. “I wonder who we’re carrying.” Ginny said, looking down at the lifeless body in your arms. She lifts up the tarp on her end and says “I’ve got the feet on my end, can you check?” With shaking hands, you lift the tarp and when you see the pink hair you know all too well, your heart sinks. “So… who is it?” Ginny asks, although from the look on your face, she is almost sure she knows the answer. You don’t want to say the words aloud, that would make it feel real. You don’t want to accept it so you lift the tarp up further, showing Ginny, and you’re sure that answered her question. Aside from the battle scars across her face, if you didn’t know she was dead, you would think she was sleeping. She looked so peaceful. “Oh Y/n!” Ginny said. You had reached the Great Hall so you lowered her body and knelt down beside her. You hardly noticed the tears running down you face. Ginny knelt down beside you and said “Now’s probably not the best time to say this, but look who Hermione and Luna just brought in.” You look over, dreading the sight you are about to see. When you see who it was, your heart sank once again. You saw the deeply scarred face of Remus Lupin, and buried your face in your hands. You hear Lupin’s body being placed beside Tonks’s and feel a soft hand on your back that you knew belonged to Hermione. You felt as though the world has ended, but it hadn’t, you have to keep going, have to keep fighting. That’s what she would have wanted, right? You pull yourself away from their bodies, but before you did so, you moved their hands together, touching each other slightly. You had been told that they were seen reaching for each other mere moments before they died. They finally reached each other, no matter the cost. That made your heart hurt a little less. You walked around the Great Hall to see what other innocent lives were lost in the battle. The tiny bit of pain you had shaved away earlier came back you in triple when you saw Fred Weasley, dead on the ground. You walked over to Ginny, put a comforting arm around her and said “I’m so sorry.” She said nothing, but she put her head on your shoulder, and you stood there in silence for a minute, both of you grieving your own losses. The call for return to battle was made and took every bit of strength left in you to not stay behind. “HARRY POTTER IS DEAD!” Voldemort called out to the crowd of survivors waiting in the courtyard, which was where he had told them to go. “No, no way, this can’t be happening!” you thought, but you didn’t dare say it aloud. You knew what consequences would be if you did. You would be killed right then and there. Neville makes a whole speech, but none of it made anything feel any better. You keep a tight grip on Ginny this whole time, you were terrified that she’d run forward, do something stupid and be killed also, she’s one of the only people that you have left, you can’t lose her too. But if you weren’t focused on keeping Ginny from getting herself killed, you’d run too, run and kill Bellatrix Lestrange, Neville had told you that she had been the one to kill Tonks, he had seen it happen. And if you could manage it, Dolohov, he had killed Remus. Then, BOOM! Harry was alive! For a minute you felt completely happy. It faded almost immediately. Battle started again and you, Luna, Ginny and Hermione were fighting Bellatrix, and you were determined to bring an end to her. When a killing curse narrowly misses Ginny, you are hit with a last push of determination and manage to blow Bellatrix into a million pieces. “You did it!” Ginny said. “No,” you say, “We did it!”
“Avada Kedavra!”
“Expelliarmus!”
All you could do was watch as Harry put his life on the line, once again. It took an hour, or a minute, you couldn’t tell. But in the end, Voldemort was killed. You were one of the first to hug Harry as soon as it was over.
