poppy to the rescue

it’s a seven minute drive to the house, and the trip is mostly silent other than sirius murmuring quietly to remus in the back, consoling him when he slurs that he’s feeling really bad, really low.

james had called the older couple earlier to explain the situation, and poppy could be heard in the background rustling around with equipment and supplies.

james mentioned that he had also called peter, who had been quickly worried and was now on his way to meet them at poppy and minnie’s house.

once they had pulled up, the front door opens to show a sightly rumpled, but composed minerva, who quickly moved towards the car, standing as they usher a very wobbly remus from the car,

“oh boys” she sighs worriedly, walking behind with regulus as james and sirius move with remus towards the entrance of the small cottage.

regulus exchanged pleasantries with the older women, going on to explain in further details what had been going on, and making sure to mention that james was feeling really guilty,  as remus got settled into the recliner chair.

there has been quite a few occasions where they had resolved to coming here when remus’ levels had gotten this low, and therefore they had a bit of a system for this type of thing.

regulus stood quietly as the group went through their motions.

poppy would ready the iv line as sirius (or whoever could) tested remus’ blood sugar.

today it was just reading LOW, causing poppy to wince as she gazed upon the testing meter.

james stood wearily beside the couch as the meter beeped LOW, and the next few frantic moments were much of a blur.

but from what he could tell, sirius had kept remus awake as pomfrey prodded at the inside of his elbow, a small butterfly looking needle in the other gloved hand, before she carefully inserted the needle, pulling back to leave a small tube imbedded, which she taped down,

and attaching it to the tube which was connected to the glucose drip.

the glucose drip was like a regular saline drip, a bag attached to a pole, which gradually dripped glucose into remus’ system.

it would hopefully get him feeling less delirious and shaky, rising his level so they could go home to rest.

after a moment of james gatherings all the thoughts inside of his head, he heard a voice carefully calling his name.

he tilted his head upwards, hand coming up to adjust his glasses as he focused on the figure crouched infront of him.

apparently through the ruckus, peter had arrived, as he was now infront of james, pulling a small cube out of his pocket.

“i grabbed this for you” the mousy boy spoke softly, extending his hand to give james the object.

james was relieved when he found the object to be his favourite fidget cube.

an item that was used more often than not, careful quiet clicks softly echoing wherever james had gone, ever since sirius had found it on one of their late night target trips.

“thanks worm” he spoke softly, watching as peter then stood, moving to talk quietly to a worried sirius.

peter was always one to shove his anxiety down for others, making sure everyone was doing alright now matter the circumstances.

soon, james found himself chatting quietly with regulus and minnie, james peeking up at the opportunity to speak about just how small the world was.

15 minutes later

remus blinked his eyes tiredly, suddenly feeling everything come into further focus, reality feeling more real than the fog that his world was moments earlier.

he moved his head slowly to the side, obviously catching the attention of his boyfriend next to him, who whipped his head around quickly to set his worried eyes on remus’ gold ones.

“remus honey?” sirius asked him hopefully, squeezing his hand in light pulsing motioned for a moment,

“you with us love?” sirius questioned further,

remus licked his lips for a moment before deciding he didn’t feel like he could talk too much yet, settling for a nod and a hum of assurance.

he blinked his eyes again as he felt something cold at the crook of one of his arms, gazing slowly upon the offending limb, to be surprised by an IV?

he made a sound of confusion, causing a familiar face to stretch into his eye line,

poppy pomfrey

one of his favourite people ever, a women who he respected and was grateful for like nobody else.

remus attempted to focus his eyes as his hands trembled for another moment.

“hey kid” the older women smiled pityingly, “you feeling low still? you dropped really low darling”

he cleared his throat with a cough, looking around the room at the abundance of worried eyes shooting in his direction as he gradually stopped trembling.

“y-yeah i um- i feel like i’m going up” remus hiccuped, shaking his hands out before focusing on the needle in his arm.

with the fog having faded significantly, remus recalled just how much he cannot stand IVs

he looked towards sirius frantically when he had seemed to have stopped remus’ own hands from ripping it out.

“please can we get this out i don’t like it” he gasped, looking between his nurse and past teacher.

remus was a diabetic yes, but he absolutely loathed when needles stayed in his skin for more than a few seconds.

he figured it was some buried childhood hospital trauma or somthing.

the panicking boy was pulled from his panic by sirius moving to block his view of his arm,

“gotta keep that in for a little while longer love” sirius spoke softly, tucking a strand behind remus’ ear.

and remus knows his low must have been a bad one, as he realised he was too tired to argue about it, despite the feeling in his arm of the tiny tube, making him feel slightly nauseous.

he layed back on the recliner after a moment, squeezing his eyes shut as he felt the sort of- inside shivers? he felt when his blood sugar was low, which he wholeheartedly despised.

remus frowned as he felt someone poke at his cheek.

“oi stay awake”

“piss off im tired pete” remus whined in response

there was a beat of silence

“if you stay awake minnie was saying she just got the good chocolate”

the room laughed as remus shot up from where he was reclined, eyes narrowing at minnie,

“mars bars?” he questioned seriously.

minerva huffed out an exasperated laugh, before reaching into the draw next to remus’ recliner.

evetyone i’m the room visibly settled as remus reached for the bar, letting out a sound of glee!

because it never really gets any better, but as they observe the colour returning to remus’ face, they realise that maybe- just maybe…. it was getting easier.
