Newt was currently on his way to study the centaurs and had found a clearing that centaurs would often visit and decided to head there but of course from a distance, instead of hearing the low voices of centaurs, he heard a young voice that couldn’t have been a young centaur since the breeding season had long passed. Newt peaked out the corner to see a young boy with fluffy brown hair and dark eyes with a blue cape, laying on a centaur's lower body and talking- no singing to it.
The centaur looked at the boy with such fondness as the boy sang, “Come wayward souls that wander through the dark-ness… there is a light for the lost and meek~” he sang hymns that echoed unrealistically loud in the forest. As if the forest was an auditorium and his soft bellowing voice bounced against the trunk of trees and felt like a hallow theater that listened so very closely and fondly to the boy.
Even if the song was morbid the centaur didn’t seem to mind and when he finished he rose from his spot and faced the centaur, “I should get going, I’ll see you tomorrow Ronan!” the centaur stood up towering over the boy and waved as the boy waved and walked away. Newt was thoroughly confused and decided to follow the boy but as quickly as he seemed to appear the boy disappeared.
Newt quickly backpedaled and hurried away, he made note of the time and left being very quiet not to alarm the centaur but soon he heard a voice behind him, “Hello? I didn’t think there was anyone around this far in the woods, especially a human of all things” Newt slowly up his hands up and lowered his body as he slowly turned to not alarm the potential beast behind him.
Newt thought maybe it was an acromantula or a centaur but he saw the same boy that the centaur was talking to with a relaxing smile, “I… I was here for study… you are…?”
Newt tried his best to keep calm and not seem like a threat. “Huh for what? What purpose did you need to study the centaurs for?” he sounded of genuine curiosity but also a stern sound that demanded an answer.
“I am a magizoologist… I wanted to conduct a study to inform my fellow wizards on how to care and… and act towards magical creatures…” Newt hoped that was a good response since he was mumbling on some of his speech from nervousness and his tendency to quiet his voice for his animals. The boy smiled, “I see, then could I get your name?” Newt could see his tone sweetened and his shoulders seemed to ease in a lax position, “My name is Newt Scamander…. may I ask who you are…?”
Newt knew that asking someone who was as close to centaurs as this boy was either powerful or terrifyingly smart and Newt knew he should have just accepted the go-ahead and left but he just had to know who this is. The boy seemed to be amused at Newt’s question, “You can call me Wirt and I’m guessing this little guy is yours? Since you said you were a magizoologist right?” Wirt picked up something that was clinging to his coat and Newt gasped.
It was his niffler Teddy, “Teddy!” instead of thinking of the precautions of running up to a potentially dangerous boy he just had to grab Teddy the niffler right then and there, “Ah- I apologize…” the boy was surprised and then cracked a smile and then burst with laughter as the niffler tried to get closer to the boy’s coat that had gold embroidery on the ends.
“Hahaha…! It’s- it's fine- Newt right?” Newt gave a slight nod before an arm quickly hooked his neck making him come down a tad as he was brought face-to-face with Wirt, “I gotta tell you that was amusing! Could I invite you to a cup of tea? A day out to get to know you- each other, how does that sound?”
Needless to say, Newt was internally panicking and was trying to come up with a good answer for who looked to be disguised as a teenage boy, “Su-Sure! Where…?” Newt was nervous because when Wirt was laughing he could swear that his eyes changed from those dark brown eyes to bright hues of blue and yellow that seemed to glow. Newt was wondering if he could be a creature disguised as a human, he couldn’t tell so he would go along with what the boy said to make sure he would stay alive.
“Hmmm how about we go to a cafe? I know this small cafe that’s owned by the sweetest old man, come on why don’t we go right now?” Wirt held Newt a bit closer as they started to move quickly as if zipping around trees at lightning speed but he couldn’t feel his body almost as if he was fog or smoke or a liquid of some kind, it was a very weird feeling.
Suddenly they were in an alleyway in a city very far from where they were just moments ago, “Where…-?” Newt was slightly dizzy from what felt like going 100 miles a minute until Wirt spoke, “Oh we’re in Brighton! Now I know this great cafe that I mentioned-” Newt immediately straightened in shock, “That- that is at the least millions of miles from where we were!” Newt was unsubtly asking what transportation brought them all the way to the coast.
“Oh come on don’t worry about it right now! Just enjoy yourself and let’s get something to eat, it's been a while since I’ve been in a city like this” Wirt spoke fondly as if never seen a city but Newt chose to ignore it. Further up the road, a cafe sat that seemed slowly with business, “Hello! I would like some Sassafras tea please! And you Newt?” Newt cleared his throat before asking for chamomile tea which the old man in the front quickly noted down and went to the back to start.
Wirt finds a seat near a window in the corner furthest from the counter and Newt followed, “To be plain and simple Newt I’m not human nor am I a “creature” I think that’s what you wizards call the animals and such in your world right?” Newt was surprised at the bluntness and took a breath, “So you know that I’m a wizard and you are not a creature, could I know what you are?” Newt trod carefully as he questioned his boy who seemed otherworldly.
“Oh my! So eager, not that I mind your bluntness I quite admire it Newt. But to answer your question I am well I am not from this time you could say but my title is The Beast and I rule over the domain of the dead, I am basically the guardian of the in-between of life and death and guide souls… are you scared?” a cheeky grin came across his face to see Newt’s expression.
Newt was nervous because he was basically talking to death in his mind but now he was going to ask a final question, “Do you have any intentions of hurting now that I know?” Wirt was surprised that Newt would ask and actually showed his surprise which made Newt blank at the no response, “Of course not! I am a forest spirit why would I hurt someone trying to understand nature just because they know the truth? And trying to be helpful? Dude, you are like 10 out of 10 great dude” Newt was confused at the dialect that Wirt used and was very relieved.
“But did you not say you were a guardian of the afterlife?” Wirt sighed as if Newt said a dumb question. Still, he brushed it off, “Well I guess I didn’t mention it but the afterlife is like any other land in the world except it is very confusing since all people are from different times so they use their land differently, that's all and most of it is forest. My forest. So I take care of my land very thoroughly, it was passed down to me anyway, my predecessor was an ass.” Newt really wanted to ask about this predecessor but when Wirt mentioned him eyes changed slowly in and out of those bright hues of blue and yellow which made Newt shut his mouth.
Newt decided not to mention his predecessor that clearly pissed off this boy that is a literal god so he doesn’t mention it, “Well if you would help me in the endeavors of my research and inform my fellow wizards, would you” Wirt was taken aback and smiles, “To protect those who cannot do it themselves is my job, I would love to Newt Scamander” Newt could only smile in relief. “Thank you, Wirt” soon their tea came and the tension dissipated as the calming sensations settled and a comforting silence washed over them both. The first time Wirt had actually attempted to connect with a human in 173 years, and he definitely did not regret it.
That was the start of their relationship as friends and as partners.
______________
Credence thrashed making a hole in the ceiling as rubble came crashing down, “Don’t do this… please” Tina looked at him with soft eyes and a slight shake in her voice trying to ease his heart. He was hurt and she tried to help the best she could by de-escalating the situation to talk some sense into Credence before he hurt himself, “Keep talking Tina” Newt said on the ground pushing Tina to continue, “I know what that woman did to you. Newt and I will protect you… he’s using you” Tina pleaded with Credence so they could save him.
She tried to convince him Graves was not his ally but his enemy, he was not his friend. Don’t listen to her credence. I want you to be free” these conflicting sides made Credence thrash and the appearance of the ministry did not help as they fired at Credence he yelled in pain as he was ripped to pieces, as if he was simply torn cloth in the air, “NO!” Tina with wide eyes gasped as she watched.
The train station was broken, Graves walked towards the rubble where Credence died, “Fools…. Do you realize what you’ve done?” Graves said as he looked over his shoulder slowly, “The obscurial was killed on my orders, Mr. Graves.” Seraphina said with a cold tone towards Graves. “Yes….” Graves mumbled under his breath as she continued, “He has broken one of our most sacred laws-”
“A law that has us scuttling like rats in the gutter. A law that demands that we conceal our true nature. A law that directs those under its dominion to cower in fear, lest we risk discovery. Who does this law protect? Us? Or them? I refuse to bow down any longer.” Graves gave a speech of empowerment that painted himself with light hues of white and the ministry in black, though the color of black suits Graves well.
Both sides are in grey at the most, and both sides are wrong for what happened at that moment, “Aurous, I’d like to relieve Mr. Graves of his wand. And escort him back” the president demanded as a wall was made in front of Graves as he tried to walk away. Graves turns to them as he fights with his wand in hand having the advantage at first before Newt releases swooping evil on him that entangles him, “Accio!” Tina quickly blurts as she fires the spell at Graves and soon falls to his knees.
“Revelio…” Newt says as he cast a spell on Graves to transform him back to his original form as Grindlewald. “Do you think you can hold me…?” he said with a whisper-like tone as if taunting them, “We’ll do our best Mr. Grindlewald.” the Mr. Graves imposter is dragged out, and as soon as he was dragged out. When most of the ministry had moved on Newt caught a shadow in the corner of his eye and immediately knew who it was, a boy no older than 15 years old came out of nowhere as if from the wall in out of date clothing as he smiled. His dark hair and soft dark eyes lingered on Newt as he approached Newt Scamander.
Newt could help but smile bitterly, “How is he on the other side…?” Newt tried to be positive and the boy smiled, “He hasn’t come to visit, he’s okay Newt you don’t have to worry about him I’ve decided to take pity on him and brought him back.” Wirt smiled and Newt couldn’t help but brighten up, “Earnestly?” Wirt nodded, “Of course, I would never lie to you Beast Keeper” Newt embarrassingly flushed as the title.
“Oh please you know how I feel about that name…” it was a title bestowed upon by Dark Lantern tavern once he visited with Wirt. “You will be able to visit him over the river” Newt seemed to be slightly confused, “Not on the riverbed?” Wirt chuckled, “No, I’ll see you then. Do come and visit later they miss you” Newt softly smiled, “Of course”
Wirt then turned away and dripped into shadow and quickly zipped away, “Who was that Newt…” Tina said behind Newt who had watched the exchange, “A welcoming force of good, he is as well my companion” Newt couldn’t help but smile as he knew Credence would just be just fine in Wirt’s care, whether it be on the riverbed or over the river.
