Mitsuki, the Civilian Nuke-Nin (Naruto)
Mitsuki was an orphan that found konoha rather....underwhelming.
See, Mitsuki used to be someone else - had been someone else several times in fact.
She's not sure when she started remembering her past lives, it just naturally happened. If she had any bigger of an ego maybe she'd think she was immortal, that she could toy with anyone however she liked because she was infinite in a way their puny mortal comprehension could not even begin to fathom, let alone understand.
That sounded fucking stupid, though, so she wasn't. Mitsuki was no immortal running from death, she was simply herself.
The first life she remembered, she was a farmhand - her heart gave out at fourty. She never married, not because she was undesirable - she just didn't want to marry. Though some may claim her lack of issues with resorting to violence was proof otherwise, her village was actually quite odd. It appreciated strength - if you fought well and had a valid reason, you could do whatever you wanted short of murder or torture.
The second life she was a woman in the modern age. Because of her...newer, more peaceful society - she decided she would try better to reign in her temper there. This came to an end when her mother that time pulled her aside before the first day of school and said to her seriously 'I don't care what anyone else says - if someone starts shit with you, you sock them so hard they start tasting colours and numbers.' This rekindled her more violent retaliation - just in time for her to avoid bullying. Unlike some would believe, she was well adjusted enough not to punch them too hard. She recognized that needless violence wasn't fair, mostly considering she was almost four times the age of her 'opponents' and she wasn't looking to get well into the habit of hitting children.
She went on to become a boxer - a sport that, luckily, allowed you to hit people and it be totally morally okay. Retiring at 28, she moved to japan after studying the language since she had first been introduced to it in highschool - mostly through shows that passing acquaintances would talk about. This time it wasn't anything so mundane as a heart attack that did her in - no, this time it was just pure bad luck. There had been a power outage in the peak of winter - it had been raining, she had been experiencing symptoms of hypothermia for a while by the time the outage had hit. She thought she had just been a little colder than usual, not anything dangerous but something to quickly fix.
She collapsed before she even made it home.
The third life, she was..transmigrated - if that's even the right trope name - into her personal favourite anime of her second life; Naruto. It was her favourite mostly because it was the only one she watched. She liked the setting, and Naruto himself was..maybe cute, in the 'annoying kid that has his sweet moments before going right back to being annoying' way. Mostly though - she took an unfortunate liking to Kirigakure after seeing the seventh episode of the show, when Zabuza had just been introduced.
Most other animes bored her to tears after the first ten episodes - but Naruto kept her rapt attention, mostly because of that village and that village only.
She was feeling...nostalgic, maybe. It was basically a perfect copy of her home village - if not more misty and open to murder.
Being reborn in Naruto wasn't a surprise exactly - it just took her up until her childhood friend suggesting they build their own hidden village in water country after hearing that the Senju and Uchiha clans of fire country came together to make one for her to finally realize where she was. You'd think the clan names were obvious clue ins - but well, she wasn't really thinking about anime while fighting for her life, thanks.
Yeah, she was the co-founder of Kiri.
She died this time in a pretty clear and cut way, she founded the laws of Kiri - minimal ones, but ones that ensured they had basic decency like "wow let's not just fuck up our population count just because someone, quote ; 'looked at you funny' - thanks." After that she hoped that Obito didn't fuck up her little village too much like something whatever years from then, and carried on her marry little way on the road of reincarnation after being assassinated in office. Literally, like she was sitting in her office when it happened at the time. It's amazing how much Iwa cares for a village half-way across the continent, really. It'd almost be impressive how determined they were - that is if they didn't kill her because they were sensitive and their glass egos were shattered when she said their city planning was shit during their negotiation meetings.
But they did, so fuck Iwa for being petty.
So yeah, Mitsuki is here now in Konoha, canon era - and honestly? It's not that big of a deal. There's no crowds of people lining up to mob and kill Naruto at every inconvenience - so, fanfiction got that wrong - and another thing she observed that Root was not in the business of just stealing orphans off the streets either. From what she remembered, a large sum of Root members were clan children that showed promise, but not enough that anyone would miss them too much. Orphans had to be extremely talented - Kabuto being you know, the guy that was canonically stated to be so strong he was on par with several prodigies of Konoha, the literal prodigy factory somehow, despite being such a non-presence.
So yeah, kids that were very promising in order to get the 'honor' of 'protecting Konoha.'
Mitsuki was not that. Hell - three lives under her belt and she died in equally anti-climatic ways each time. Sure, she was racking up achievements - farm hand dying to a heartattack, moderately famous boxer dying to hypothermia, village co-founder dying to assassination - it sounds interesting, but it's really not. No fanfare, no blaze of glory - just there one minute, gone the next.
At risk of emulating a certain artist - death should be an explosion, not a fucking fire popper. She wants to go out in a blaze of glory, not this- this silent demise! She wants to be the whirl wind that takes the world by storm and dies more chaotically than she lived - saying a whole lot, considering she wants to be considered chaos incarnate itself.
Right now you're probably thinking - "Oh Mitsuki, is this your reign of terror finally happening? Have you finally got tired of being nice?"
And the answer to that is a resounding no. This is not the time for Mitsuki's reign of terror, sadly.
She realized that Kiri, while a blast to make, the stress of living in the warring clans era in the already quite vicious water country then going on to co-found the fucking bloody mist made her more.. impulsive than she'd like.
So she toned down her impulse to take over the village and potentially ending the world as collateral in the process, and instead took a vacation.
In the form of Mitsuki.
Due to her past lives - blending in as a child was pretty easy, and getting an inflated ego because "ohhhh I'm sooooo much older and smarter then you ohhhhhhh" just wasn't something she had to worry about in the first place. She also wasn't very affected by the psychological conditioning and marketing of the shinobi career here in konohagakure - because honestly? She practically invented conditioning for this shit. Literally no one in water country ever does anything unless they don't know you're trying to get them to do it. Full grown shinobi who bite the heads of their enemies off are just maybe a little itty bit harder to convince of indoctrination then impressionable children being raised in a pro-shinobi culture, she'd like to think.
She bets that the first hokage's weird brother got this system from her - the first guy was too nice to consider it, but the second guy definitely ended up looking through her 'subtle "suggestion" to join Kirigakure' notepad she had been carrying around at death, there's just no way he didn't - he was all gross and invasive like that. She'd be angry at him - but she also stole some of the more effective shinobi wrangling techniques from him while in the barely set up village for negotiations, so she'd say they're pretty even.
So yeah, this all led to Mitsuki running a civilian bakery.
Then promptly..not, anymore.
Vacation got boring.
Yeah, it was relaxing - but it was so boring. Her last lives spoiled her - always having her active.
She blames her lack of impulse control for going nuke-nin - though, does it really count if you weren't in their registry in the first place?
The best part about being a background civilian before going rogue is that no bingo book actually knows shit about you. Some hidden villages - Konoha included - were willing to provide information to bingo books about the shinobi's abilities if they thought it'd give a higher chance of capture. Usually it's just vague facts and a limited report of jutsu they use the most - Mitsuki though? No one knew anything she didn't willingly show them.
It's pretty fucking fun, and oddly freeing - if that makes sense.
