I firmly believe that James was a big flirt with all of his friends but most of them would just laugh at him in response. Apart from Remus, who took great pleasure in confusing others and making them uncomfortable. The first time Remus flirted back at James, James was shocked but that didn't last long. From then on Remus and James would flirt back and forth, especially in lessons they shared with the Slytherins. James was also the first one to call Remus, Moony as all flirting required nicknames, obviously. Rumours flew around school about the two of them, sometimes literally as students sent flying notes around the Great Hall to each other. By the end of Third Year the entire school was talking about Remus and James' relationship and how cute they were. Only the Marauders knew the truth and they didn't feel like telling anyone anytime soon. Despite their best efforts, this became the Marauders most memorable prank.
