Chapter 1
Hermione marched up to Malfoy, wand drawn and pointed right at his throat. "You foul, loathsome, evil little cockroach"
As Ron stopped her from hexing Malfoy, he made the mistake of starting to laugh after she turned her back on him. She spun back around and didn't notice her necklace flying free of her jacket and getting in the path of her punch. As her fist connected with his jaw, a sharp pain flew through her hand. The world around them sped in a familiar way. In that instant, she knew things were bad. She quickly started to run through the situation as the world moved around them and Draco was looking around, eyes trying to track people moving far too fast. It took a minute to stop moving and they both looked sick to their stomachs from the motion.
When they stopped, she started to mumble to herself about the time turner and figuring out how far back, or maybe forward, they went and how she already broke the first rule of time travel. She's starting to mumble her game plan about getting back home without breaking too many more of the rules of time travel she was told when handed her time turner at the start of the year. She's pacing as Malfoy just stares at her only picking up a few words here and there... but the combination of "back maybe forward", "how far", "tell no one" and "we're screwed" was not giving him much hope for their current situation.
"Granger, what the fuck did you just do? Where is everyone else?"
"Shut up, I'm thinking." She looks around and wonders how she will be able to explain this without telling Malfoy about the time turner. Having four people disappear and the world speed around you isn't exactly a common side effect of a punch. But maybe he wouldn't know that. Punches are rather muggle... She shook her head to clear that thought from her head. He'd never believe it anyway.
Malfoy is trying to get her attention as she paces in a circle still mumbling too quiet to really pick anything up. He's never seen her look quite this upset by anything, even the first time he called her a mudblood. This only confirms his earlier thoughts... whatever happened was not good.
"Granger. You really need to tell me what you just did to me."
"Seriously, Shut. Up. I can't get us out of this if you keep talking"
"Granger, out of-"
"Just shut up. I need to figure this out. This might be really bad." Well, that's an understatement. You're stuck with your enemy in an unknown time, no clue how or why or how to get back. Understatement of the year in fact- understatement whatever year this is AND 1993.
"FIGURE WHAT OUT? What do you mean bad? Why am I bleeding? Why are you bleeding? Oh Merlin, you got your filthy blood on me." He quickly wipes at his cheek with a grimace, at the pain or the thought of their blood mixing he wasn't quite sure.
She finally looked down and realized that she had shards of glass and time dust embedded in the cuts across her knuckles. Well, that explained the how at least... and the pain. She starts pacing again and keeps trying to think through the best route back home. And if I should bring Malfoy back or leave him. She again shook that thought from her head. Of course, she had to bring him back. She couldn't let him mess everything up in the past... or future. This is not easy to think through with this little information...
"Granger, don't ignore me! WHAT DID YOU DO?"
"Malfoy if you don't shut up right now and let me sort this, I swear I will punch you again" Leaving him behind was sounding better and better the more he spoke.
"I don't believe you punched me a first time Miss..."
At this, they both turned to see they had an audience. A rather large one. One that most definitely contained Lucius Malfoy sneering at her, a very young Lucius Malfoy next to an even younger Severus Snape. Things were definitely just as bad as she originally thought. It was now very obvious that she was decades in the past. Well, there goes the second rule of time travel. Or was it the second time she broke the first rule... Time travel rules were rather annoyingly similar. This was, in her opinion, shaping up to be a rather bad day.
"Now that's a new one, I actually agree with the prat of Slytherin."
"Shut up Potter" Came from both the Malfoys in the clearing
At this, Hermione finally tore her eyes from the three Slytherin to realize that there were four Gryffindor boys all smiling at the scene before them. One was definitely related to Harry, the hair and the lopsided smile were dead giveaways. She cocked her head as she inspected the taller blonde to his side and realized that this was most definitely another of her professors. So now, she had dragged Malfoy and herself decades in the past and landed within hearing distance of two of her professors, her enemies father, her best friend's father, and all their friends.
She turned back to Draco and realized he just spotted his father. She put on her best innocent look as he spun around, eyes wide looking about ready to kill her. The bloody cheek only added to the menacing look on his face. He took a deep breath and said in a tone that was pure ice "Granger, explain. Now."
Chapter 2: Earth to Hermione
Her innocent look was fading as all eight boys waited for her explanation. She had only figured out the basics herself and had no idea how to pass it along to him without a rather large tantrum. Time turner, around two decades in the past, no clue how to return. She was glancing between the Slytherins, the Gryffindors, and Malfoy- Draco, Merlin this is going to get confusing. So far she had decided to try and let as little information get out. But her mind was on a loop of three simple facts and it was not letting her process much more than time turner, around two decades in the past, no clue how to return.
"Well, Granger. What. The fuck. Happened?"
She swallowed, still repeating "Time turner, around two decades in the past, no clue how to return." In her head trying to sort the best way to explain this all. Though, was there really a good way to say "Hey, when I punched you I sent you back in time to before we were born and yes that's your Dad standing there"... No, she decided, there was not a good way.
"Um, nearest I can tell we traveled back a couple decades," she said, barely loud enough for him to hear. There, that was easy. Quick and to the point.
Draco didn't seem to agree with the "easy" part of her assessment if his face was anything to go by. She took a step closer, holding up her time turner... Her broken time turner. The other seven boys were trying to listen without seeming too obvious about their mutual interest. None of them could see the charm dangling between the two strangers that just appeared. Draco was just staring at the golden circles dangling from her hand as the pieces slowly started to click in his head.
"Granger," He paused and took a deep breath "Granger, tell me that I didn't just hear you correctly. Tell me you did not launch me two bloody decades in the past. Tell me that we are not stranded together in the past."
Her lips drew tight as she considered the best way to defuse the Malfoy shaped ticking bomb in front of her... and that was all the confirmation he needed. He closed his eyes and huffed out "You stupid mudblood. this right here is why you don't deserve magic. Who could possibly think that it was a good idea to give you that ability?" He was now running his hands through his hair and over his face trying to process exactly how utterly fucked they both were.
"Mal-Draco. Stop. You need to stop talking and we need to get to Dumbledore. The fewer people that know the better" She hissed through her teeth, trying to keep as little information from getting around as possible. The last thing they needed was for everyone present to hear that they weren't from the present. She was sure that at least one of them was already a death eater, and being kidnapped for Voldemort sounded like something she never wanted to do.
"Oh yeah, let's just waltz right up to him and say gee sir, we happened to time travel on accident because she's bloody violent. Yeah. No. That is a HORRIBLE idea. He will send us to St. Mungo's immediately."
She pinched the bridge of her nose. Obviously, this isn't going as quickly as I thought it would."Just calm down and come with me. He can help. He gave this to me in the first place" holding up the time turner and motioning to it. "we can probably get home easily and it will be like nothing happened."
"Now I am definitely NOT going. Twenty years and He gave you the bloody thing in the first place. I am not trusting anyone with that bad of judgement."
"Well then who do you suggest? We don't know anyone else here that can help us, not really." Please just catch on... You're supposed to be intelligent!
"If I may interject-"
"NO" they both all but shouted at the timid short blonde next to Not-Yet-Professor Lupin as he jumped back behind the boy with long black hair. Well, that's just fantastic. Really, let's scare the poor boy.
"Draco, seriously we need to go to Dumbledore. Please."
"Stop using my first name, you have no right you filthy mudblood"
"Oi, mate, you should probably stop calling her that" came from one of the Gryffindors, she really wasn't paying attention to which one.
She ignored him, it wasn't exactly a new insult. "Oh, and what am I supposed to do? Call you by your last name? Because that won't cause any problems at all" She all but shouted, waving her bloody hand in the general direction of the Slytherin group, hoping he'd remember his father would certainly have questions about that little bit of information.
It seemed to have come across to him as his eyes briefly flashed with anger right before he grabbed her wrist and started to drag her back into the castle behind him. She could hear everyone behind them, following as close as they could. Well, this is wonderful. Truly. Being dragged around like a rag doll as Malfoy mutters about stupidity and mudbloods and time travel and why him. When she tripped a third time, she yanked her arm back and ended up on her butt on the floor when he let go.
"Granger. Now is not the time to finally accept your place in the world. Get up and let's go"
"Ha ha. Stop being a prat and help me up. Then we can walk to Dumbledore's office at a reasonable pace." From behind her one of the other boys was hoisting her up to her feet. She turned around and offered a smile to the blond boy who was the shortest of the bunch but still had a good four inches on her. He gave a soft smile back at her and let her go as she turned back to Draco.
"Midget pace isn't reeeeeasonable Granger." He apparently didn't see the slap coming any more than the punch... You would think he'd learn.
Chapter 3: Meeting the Headmaster
After the shock of being struck twice in a few minutes by Hermione wore off, Draco decided it was probably in his best interest to curb the sarcasm for a bit. The very strange mix of boys following the girl with big hair and the boy who was startlingly similar to Lucius drew quite a few looks as they wound through the castle. It was a well-known fact that the Marauders and Snape did not get along, yet here they were all following behind a very angry looking Hermione and a mildly bloody Draco. Add into that Lucius and the younger LeStrange brother... It was a very confusing sight for all the students.
When they finally reached the gargoyle Hermione started to quietly name every single sweet she could think of until the stairs started to appear. At this, Lucius raised his eyebrow and the Marauders all looked at each other then down at the girl in front of them as she dragged the blond boy she appeared with up the stairs. Not wanting to be left out, the entire group rammed onto the stairs despite her not very subtle glare at all of them.
If Dumbledore was surprised by the group all stumbling in unannounced, his twinkling eyes didn't show it. He took in the group and decided to address the girl they were all looking towards "And to what do I owe this pleasure, Miss..."
"Granger. and this is Draco. We need to talk to you about a little accident" She said with a smile.
"Little? Really, Granger? I'd call twenty-" The rest was lost to her silencing charm.
He glared at her as she continued "We had a small accident with this" And she took the time turner off her neck and laid it on his desk. The look of confusion on his face made both their hearts drop. She waited patiently for Dumbledore to inspect the broken hourglass, Draco was less patient and began to poke her side and motion at his throat. She smirked back not happening, he can shut up for a few minutes.
After a minute of inspection, Dumbledore looked at her and said: "My dear, I am certain I've never seen one of these before but by the inscription I can guess this is to do with time manipulation, correct?"
Hermione collapsed into the nearest chair running through everything in her head before responding with a shaky "Yes sir. It's a time turner."
"Well, as it appears that you know me but I don't know me, I'll assume you both came from the future." A nod from both Draco and Hermione drew a gasp from behind them. Crap, I forgot about the rest of them. I should have asked them to leave. She dared a glance at the assembled group and saw pure interest in most of their faces, though it was a rather unfriendly form of interest on one of the faces.
"So Miss Granger and Mister Draco, I think we have a few choices to make. For now, I think we'll stick with just one question, would you rather stay here for school or would you prefer to seek other accommodations while we look into this?"
Well, hopefully, we'll just be here for a few days and then we can be off again without disturbing the timeline too much..."I think I'm going to stay, what about you?"
At this Draco poked Hermione very hard, raised his eyebrow and looked hard at her and once again pointed to his throat, she blushed and waved her wand so he could say "Well if Granger is staying I will too. I'd rather we stay close so we can leave as soon as we find a solution" Hermione narrowed her eyes at this... Definitely should have left him behind.
"Then I guess for now I'll dismiss you so you can go eat. I'm sure we'll be talking again later. Though perhaps a trip to Madame Pomfrey is in order?" He asked, motioning towards Draco's face. As their group wandered to the infirmary, no one seemed eager to break the silence. Hermione was, again repeating in her head time turner, around two decades in the past, no clue how to return. Well, at least now she wouldn't be the only one working on the last bit. She was busy thinking through what she could do to figure it out when Draco poked her hard in the side, again. He seemed to have rather good aim as he hit the same spot every time.
"What do you want Ma- Draco?" She bit out, only stopping herself from saying Malfoy when the other white blond head of hair popped into her peripheral vision. No need to open that can of worms unless it's absolutely necessary. She glared at him and cocked her head, clearly telling him to get on with it.
"Not me, him," he said, pointing back at Not-Yet-Professor number two with a smirk.
"I was just wondering about how exactly the time... thing you showed the Headmaster... how did it malfunction? How did you end up here, or now, or here now... Merlin that's confusing" His eyebrows were drawn close as his sentence finished, and the other boys were looking right at her just as curious.
Draco, on the other hand, was looking at her with what appeared to be mirth. She narrowed her eyes at Draco and realized, that yes... it was definitely barely contained laughter at what he was thinking would be her embarrassment. Well, two can play at that game.
"Oh what Draco, didn't want to explain you were punched by a girl over a, what did you call it?" She asked tapping her chin with her still bloody hand. "Oh, yes, that's right... a bloody chicken that almost took your arm off." The amusement very quickly drained from Draco's face as the rest of the group began to laugh and his cheek tinged pink.
"But how did a chicken and a punch end with you ten feet from us arguing?" a still puzzled Remus asked her.
Now it was Hermione's turn to blush. "Well, you see I was rather upset by Buckbeak's execution and Draco decided to be a right prat about it. My friend Ron talked me out of hexing Draco, an obvious mistake... Then as I was about to walk away he decided to laugh and as I spun around to punch him, I caught my time turner. It broke when I hit him and here we are."
Remus just took it all in with a thoughtful look on his face. A few minutes of silence later, they arrived at the infirmary to be patched up. Before long all the glass and dust had been cleared from the wounds, the cuts had been healed and the group then set off for the great hall
Chapter 4: Not as bad as my family
The walk down to the Great Hall for lunch was filled with conversations. The Marauders were all trying to figure out if, or rather how, the boy was related to Malfoy. From what Hermione could hear, they would soon finish the map- and that would prove them right in their decision that this was indeed a Malfoy arguing with her right now. The Slytherins were discussing the mudblood. Oh, how wonderful, two decades and the insults had not changed apparently. Well, she thought, Slytherin isn't exactly the house known for their wit. Draco and Hermione, on the other hand, were trying to figure out exactly where to draw the lines and how much was safe to say. So far they had agreed on nothing, though that wasn't surprising.
"Honestly Draco, we can't risk a change to the past. It is the past. What if we prevent our births? What if we are unborn?"
"That's my father Granger. I'm not about to kill him and never be born!"
"Death is not the only way to prevent a birth. Perhaps I should allow you to mess up your own birth if you don't get that. Maybe they can build a better Malfoy next time." With that hissed insult, she marched off to the Gryffindor table before he could respond.
The Marauders quickly followed and sat down around her, smiling. She looked up at Remus when he cleared her throat and extended his hand "Remus Lupin, pleased to meet you"
She took his hand "Hermione Granger, pleasure"
"This one is James Potter, that one to your left is Sirius Black and to your right is Peter Pettigrew" None of them missed how she tensed up at Sirius' name.
"So, love, I take it you've met a Black or two in your time by that reaction. I don't hold the same values as most of my family."
"No, you're the first Black I've had the chance to actually meet. Though, the... reputation... is well known still." As is your name as a traitor and murderer.
An awkward silence followed that exchange until Peter finally cut in "So, you're a Gryffindor, huh?" The snorts from Remus and James let out made Hermione laugh rather loud.
"That obvious, is it?" All five smiled at that.
"So what year are you?"
"I was at the end of my third. What year are you lot?"
"We just started our fourth."
"So, what was the business with the chicken?"
"Oh, it wasn't a chicken. Not really. It was a hippogryph. We had a lesson on them in care of magical creatures and he ended up getting scratched by Buckbeak. He and his wonderful father ended up getting it executed. It was about to happen we when got into the argument."
"Well, that makes more sense than a chicken. How is your hand feeling?"
"It's a little sore, but I'd say it was overall worth it. I've wanted to slap him for two years."
"If he's anything like our blond over there, I definitely understand"
"Wait. You said the end of your third. What date was it for you?"
"Sixth June 1993. When is it now?"
"Thirteenth September 1975. It's a Saturday if you're wondering."
"I was, but it seems such a strange question to ask someone you just met."
"Well, now we've known each other a full hour. We're already old friends!"
At Peter's declaration, the whole group burst into laughter. Well, at least I will enjoy the next couple days. "So, what do you do for fun on a Saturday in 1975?"
"Well, normally Hogsmeade. But today we're planning on flying, maybe you can join us. I think James has a spare broom."
"I haven't flown since first year. I'll be happy to watch though."
"Wait, you're muggleborn right?" Hermione nodded. "So, you used the school brooms and learned with an entire class?" Another nod. "Yeah, you're going to re-learn. I promise it will be more fun this time around" She shakes her head at this. "Will you?"
"Will I what?"
"Let us teach you to fly? The right way, that is."
As she thought it over, she nibbled on her food. "Sure. But if I get hurt, I'm going to practice my hexes on you all. I think you'd look rather darling with pink hair."
"As long as you aren't practicing your right hook I think we'll be fine love"
Remus had been sitting back watching the other three talk to her and ask questions. He was making mental notes of how Sirius often made her uneasy but she hid it well enough that he didn't seem to notice the small girl shying away from him. James got the truest smiles like one would give an old friend. Peter seemed to get looks of pity and determination. That was all rather unusual to him but nothing more so than how she looked at him. She would look to him with respect and familiarity, and rather than lingering on his visible scars, she would focus on empty patches of skin and her lip would twitch into a small smile. He finally spoke, "Did you know us in the future?"
There was no hiding the pain on her face as she looked up.
At the Slytherin table, Draco was quickly putting his mask back up after muttering about stubborn know it all Gryffindors. His father was the first to speak. "Well, how tight of a leash does the mudblood have you on?"
With a raise of an eyebrow, he responded: "I have no leash."
"Then when are you from and who are you to me"
"1993, and it's nice to see you again Father." With that, Draco started on his food. He found he was rather hungry after the past hour.
Lucius took a moment to really look at Draco. It was rather obvious before that the boy was a Malfoy, though he was less angular than himself. There was no hiding the Malfoy hair or the grey eyes. It would seem his marriage wasn't going to be all that bad after all.
Then Rabastan spoke up "So, you got punched... by a tiny little girl... over a chicken?"
Chapter 5: Slytherin Exchange
A glare was the only answer Rabastan received. They ate the rest of lunch in silence before heading to the common room where it was safer to talk about everything. About halfway through, Rodolphus sat down. He simply looked between the two Malfoys, caught Lucius' eye and waited for an explanation. Though, it seemed clear none would be coming. Must be some story there.
After eating, the four walked in silence down to the Slytherin common room and gathered around the windows. Draco would have preferred his favorite seat, but the giant squid was far away so the sunlight was dancing through the waves of the black lake. It was a rare treat for the Slytherin common room to be bathed in sunlight, so they tended to bask in the glow when they can. They sat in the window seats and watched the plants swaying in the water for a few minutes, waiting for someone to break the silence.
"So, any of you going to eventually tell me what the fuck is happening and why there's a new kid who looks just like you here or are we going to pretend like it's a normal day?"
"I was thinking we would just avoid it. More fun that way. I like being a mystery, it adds to the allure."
"Draco, did we not teach you manners?" Lucius scolded
Draco snorted out "No, not really."
Rabastan was sitting back watching his brother piece the conversation together. After a minute he decided to pipe in "why brother, can't you recognize your own nephew?"
Rodolphus raised an eyebrow, sat down and made a motion with his hand to get the whole story.
Draco looked between the four boys trying to figure out a way to explain it without ending up having to hear about being punched by a girl for the rest of his life. After all, this was his father, Godfather and two of his uncles. Though half of them were in prison for life, but his Godfather could be mean enough for all four and was living free in the future. Maybe he could hint to his uncles you avoid the Longbottom attack. As he was mulling it over, a fifth boy walked up. He seemed friendly with Severus but didn't look at all familiar.
"Well, to start, let me ask you: how familiar are you with time travel theory?"
Severus took in the blank looks around him and responded: "Obviously not very familiar."
"Okay. That makes this harder... I'll give you the simplest version. So, in my time there are devices called time turners. They are charmed so you can easily go back a couple hours. One broke and I ended up going back in time 20 years with a Gryffindor from class."
Rodolphus looked into the lake for a moment, taking in the thought of traveling in time. He seemed to come to a conclusion then turned back. "So, you're my nephew?"
"I am indeed Uncle Dolph"
"and you are close with this Gryffindor?"
Rabastan snorted. "No, no. our darling nephew pissed off the Gryffindor, got punched by the Gryffindor and ended up here and now. A tiny little thing she is too. More hair than anything else"
"ah, you truly are your father's son. he has quite the knack for pissing off girls too. when do I get to meet her?"
"Why would you want to?"
"why not? she sounds like she has an teine. girls like that are powerful witches."
"why not? because she's a mudblood. but you'll see her around until we leave anyways."
Severus piped in now. "Any ideas on how long that will be? Dumbledore wasn't exactly talkative about that"
"she'd have a better idea, it was her time turner."
Rudolphus cleared his throat and looked at Draco, almost unsure of how to phrase the next question. After a moment of silence, Lucius seemed to catch on to the line of thinking and spoke up. "So. Our Lord-"
"Dead."
At that proclamation, they all looked away. Lucius looked at the fire for a few minutes before turning to study his son again. He's been worried lately about the contact he has with the youngest Black sister. Though seeing the result of the union, a fine heir who seems to uphold the old ways, he feels more confident.
Rudolphus had started to look at his younger brother. If their Lord is dead, what will become of the family? Can he keep his brother away long enough for him to die? Even if he could, Bella might not allow it. Perhaps he could avoid taking her as his Lady LeStrange...
Rabastan just looked down at his hands. The conversation went from light hearted teasing to a disheartening revelation far too quickly. He looked back at Draco and tried to figure out whose age he was closest to in order to pass the time.
Severus was staring at the lake again. maybe working for the Dark Lord won't be so bad if it is only for a few years. He could get his potions mastery paid for and Voldemort would be dead. Would anyone want to take in a dark potions master though?
The final boy went from looking at his nails to inspecting this new Malfoy. He could tell the boy was worried by the way he sat, appearing relaxed but just a little too stiff. Draco obviously had gone through the same lessons he had all his childhood. His station showed in his well-fitted clothes, elegant hair and proper posture- Draco was what you could call high society. He decided to break the silence. "How's your father doing on your contract? You seem about the right age."
Draco snapped his eyes to the boy he didn't know, wondering why he would ask such a question. Usually one doesn't inquire unless they are family or seeking to court the person being asked. "I don't mean to be rude... but I have no fucking clue who you are, so I'd rather not discuss that"
He looked between Lucius and Draco wide eyed. "He will be my cousin through marriage when my contract goes through. Draco, meet Regulus. Regulus, my son Draco." Draco ran through his mother's family tree in his head quickly, remembering only one Regulus. Regulus Arcturus Black, who died at 18. "oh, yeah. Black, right?" he finally said with a smooth voice.
It might have fooled the average person, but Regulus knew there was something very big hiding behind that simple statement. Something went very, very wrong in his life and he had a limited time to figure out what and stop it.
Chapter 6: Flying Lessons
Hermione was sitting at the table trying not to panic. It wasn't going very well so far. How am I supposed to answer this? "Oh yes, I know you. Remus is my favorite werewolf professor... but James is my best friend's father that died 12 years ago to me. Sirius betrayed him and killed Peter." That will go over really well.
"I... I do know you, Remus. I'm afraid I haven't met the rest of you. You taught me Defense Against the Dark Arts this year. Learned a lot about dark creatures this year." At this all the boys sat a little straighter, wondering if she realized the implication of her words. She ignored it and continued on speaking "Well, at least that's what the ministry calls them all. Anything not full wizard is dark, nonsense the lot of it. Like anyone can control their blood, utterly moronic."
She got up and walked towards the main doors, after a few steps she turned around "I thought we were going to fly" At this, the Marauders packed up and started to follow. At the end of the table, she looked down and whispered quietly so she thought only Remus could hear "You know Remus, I didn't care in my time and I don't care now. You don't need to worry." She looked up and smiled at Remus, missing the look of shock on Sirius' face, after all, dogs have good hearing too.
They left the great hall and started to head to the quidditch pitch. When they got to the locker rooms, James and Sirius ran inside to grab their brooms and Remus looked down at Hermione and said "did you mean it? You really don't care?"
"Why would I care what you are once a month? You can't hurt me outside of that. Plus you're my favorite teacher. DADA isn't my strength, but I actually learned and succeeded this year."
"So, in the future, I just tell my students and it's accepted?"
"No, I figured it out after the chapter on werewolves. Not sure who else knew. Never told you I knew." James and Sirius came walking up holding five brooms, Sirius was bouncing on the balls of his feet, ready to teach her to fly. The only acknowledgment they gave her for accepting both wolf and man was a pat on the back and a smile.
"So love, you ready to learn?"
"As I'll ever be"
James took up his place in front of her and started to teach. "You see, little bear, there are a few reasons why school brooms are harder to learn on."
"Little Bear?"
"yes. you're little, you hit hard if the bloke you came here with is any indication, and the hair... well. little bear. anyways, back to the lesson. The school brooms enchantments are weak at best. It makes for an unsteady ride and unreliable responses. The bristles at the end of the broom aid in the steering. When they are left unkempt for long, the broom becomes rather unstable even at rest. Bristles start much like this, gathered and all pointing the same way, a single point instead of a wide span of directions. After a long ride or crash, the bristles should be brushed back into a line. The handle of the broom should allow for comfort and ease of use. Any questions so far?"
"No, I think I got it. Bristles need to be kept or the broom is unruly. The enchantments are important."
"Exactly, are you ready to try a quick flight?"
"No, but I'll do it anyway."
"Okay, I'll stay on the ground with Peter for you this time, you'll take a low flight. Remus and Sirius will fly with you in case you panic and shoot up."
With that, James stood next to her and helped her mount the broom. He guided her movements to show her to control the height, speed, and direction. He and Peter took turns jogging next to her, hovering a few feet off the ground. After about an hour, Hermione was giggling and going faster than either boy could keep up with. The next time she touched down, James started talking again.
"So, now that you have the basics down. Are you ready for the next lesson?"
"Depends. What is the next lesson?"
"First level of the stands. halfway to quidditch height. Sirius will fly above, Peter below and Remus and I will fly beside you."
"Sure. That doesn't sound too bad."
They took off again and were flying around laughing and going in circles and figure 8's. After another hour, Remus hovered next to her and suggested they go higher. This time she didn't hesitate. Turns out the right broom and instruction really do help. By the time dinner rolled around, she was playing tag in and out of the towers and hoops.
As they all landed, she gave them each a hug for helping her out. "Thanks. I'm not sure I ever would have understood why flying was fun without this. Harry and Ron are obsessed with it and it never seemed fun to me."
"Harry and Ron? boyfriends?"
Hermione snorted "no. oh, Merlin no. more like a brother and an annoying cousin that always says the wrong thing."
"Oh, any other siblings?"
"Well, no. He's not actually my brother. We're both only children, but his home life sucked. So we latched onto each other the first year after a troll incident. Ron... he just came as part of the deal. Dreadful manners, complete lack of tact. But a friend none the less."
"Ah. and boyfriends little bear?"
"Nope. I rather spend my time learning all that I can. Knowledge is power, especially in the wizarding world. The more I know, the stronger I can be. And you've met Malfoy, he's not the only one who feels like he does. Power is protection."
They all looked at each other as she made her way back up to the castle. She was definitely leaving something major unsaid, and they were all certain that it wasn't the happy kind of surprise. No, this was definitely a painful surprise.
Chapter 7: Meeting the girls
Everyone was heading into the great hall for dinner and unlike their very late lunch, the hall was packed. It didn't take long for people to start noticing the new girl with the marauders. Whispers were starting to spread before she even reached the near end of the table. New people don't just show up at the school. Of course, people are going to talk. She could hear some of the whispers... apparently, she was either a visiting cousin, teacher's kid or one of the Marauder's fiance. And those were the believable stories. One Hufflepuff seemed to think she was an ambassador for the creatures of the forest here to negotiate a takeover of the school. Note to self, avoid that one.
After they settled in a new wave of rumors took over because Draco walked in with the Slytherin group. They walked right to Hermione and Draco handed her a note:
Please both join me in my office after dinner, I'm rather fond of Laffy Taffy lately.
"Well, it looks like Headmaster might have a way for us to go back already."
"Or you need a place to sleep... since that wasn't discussed before" Peter added with a smile.
"Oh... yeah. Probably that then," she said as she put her head down.
"What's wrong love?"
"Nothing really. It's just... the thought of not going home yet."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to make you sad."
"Chin up little bear, you're in good hands."
Before Sirius or Remus could talk, a group of girls walked up and caught their attention and Remus waved hello. "Hi, Remus, who's this?"
"Oh, this is Hermione... umm..."
"Granger, Hermione Granger. Nice to meet you"
"Right, So this is Marls, Lily, and Mary." At this, the three girls sat across from Hermione, pushing Sirius and Remus to the side. "Hi, Hermione! I haven't seen you around here before."
"You wouldn't have. I just popped in today. I'm just visiting." She looked at Remus hoping he could get the attention off of how literal the phrase popped in was in this situation. If Ron can, Remus should be able to... hopefully.
"So, how are you doing on the transfiguration essay Marls? I feel like I could sum it up in three inches."
"Me too. I'm not sure how to expand on the possible negative effects of prolonged human transfiguration. It's simple- either it becomes less effective over time or the effects become permanent."
"Well, you can probably include the effects of a specific spell such as Crinus Muto. Commonly used for masquerade parties, but in 1953 a witch who was hiding from the Aurors used it repeatedly and while she was in the pub one day, her hair faded to its natural color. At the same time, her parvo autem naso was fading but got stuck halfway so she ended up looking like she had a broken nose until she was given the kiss in Azkaban. I want to say her name was Carlissa Thelnet... It's been a while since I read the case study though."
After the suggestion from Hermione, everyone started talking about their classes as if it was a normal day and they didn't have someone sitting next to them from twenty years in the future. A great deal of dinner was spent talking about a particular set of runes that could be interpreted many different ways. It seems the Professor Babbling hasn't changed. She still loves giving puzzles that boil down to personal experiences guiding, or corrupting as she would exclaim if you were wrong, your view on the runic scriptures laid before the students. Before she knew it, she was saying goodbye and heading up to Dumbledore's office.
Draco was waiting for Hermione in Dumbledore's office. By the look on his face, this meeting wasn't going how he was hoping.
"Hello, lemon drop?"
"No thanks, what have you found out?"
"Right to the point I see. Well, the Ministry has a spell that they can use to send you back. It will take a week to prepare all the ingredients, but they do have several warnings to pass along to you. First, you will not return exactly when you came. However long you stay here will be how long you are gone in the future. Second, any changes you make can alter your future and when you return, there is no telling what will be there. Time is not a forgiving force. Third, they can't guarantee you won't age the same amount of time you went back, but as it is only twenty years it will not be life threatening. Their last warnings were ones that I will give you as you arrive to perform the spell. No need to dwell on things more than you need to. Finally, we will house you here in one of the old heads dorms, but you will still be allowed access to your common rooms. I had the elves find some clothes that will fit you that past students have left behind."
Draco looked horrified at this suggestion, Hermione giggled at his face.
"Now, I will have Professor McGonagall escort you to your rooms, you will be expected to follow the same rules as the other students. You can wait in here or the hall."
They both seemed to have the same idea and walked out his office and down the stairs. Hermione was looking around when a painting a little ways down from the gargoyle of a middle aged witch in a beautiful burnt orange dress caught her attention. "Miss, you look lost. Maybe I can help?"
"Thank you, but I know where I am. I'm just waiting for someone."
"One can know precisely where they are and still be lost, young Miss." At this, she walked out of the frame leaving Hermione to roll her eyes and turn to the approaching footsteps of Professor McGonagall.
Chapter 8: Accomidations
Hermione was almost eager to greet her head of house, excited to talk with her again. It would be a nice change from the constant weight of the ghosts and murderer she had spent the day with. This was the witch that showed up and changed Hermione's life with a letter from a strange school. She remembered that day so well, it was the day that she went from weird girl to witch.
"Hello, my name is Minerva McGonagall. I am here to discuss with you a very special gift your daughter possesses" They spent almost three hours talking about magic, Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and the changes to be expected. Her parents were very happy to find out that her many, many episodes were going to stop as she learned to control her magic. Magic. It was real. There was a reason no one could rearrange her bookshelf or tame her hair. She wasn't cursed by the devil as one old lady insisted when she was hurt and managed to shatter the glass in the woman's hand. She was special, she was magical, she wasn't alone. Gods, she finally wasn't alone.
She was brought from her memory by Draco once again poking her. She smiled up at her favorite professor and immediately realized she was mistaken in her happiness. Merlin was she ever mistaken. She was on the receiving end of a look that she had only witnessed once before, and then it had not been directed at her- it had been directed at the blonde next to her after the use of the word mudblood.
"If you'll follow me."
Hermione just trailed behind wondering exactly what Dumbledore had told McGonagall about her to get this reaction. They wound through the hallways and up a few flights of stairs in complete silence. When they approached a painting of four children dancing around a may pole, McGonagall turned to face them. "This is your suite. There are two rooms within that have been prepared for your arrival. I'm told there will be clothes inside for you to use while you are visiting with us." At this, she gave a very sharp look that showed no trust in the pair. "Your password will be lucht siúil. The children may come and go but one should always be here" This time her look was at the portrait as the children began to giggle. She turned and walked away from the pair.
"Well Granger, let's check this place out. lucht siúil.."
When they entered the first thing Hermione noticed was the two house elves waiting in the middle of the common room, eager to see their reactions. Then she noticed the very bright purple rug they were on. Then the dark green table, yellow couch, red chair and blue love seat. This room was definitely put together using the forgotten pieces of furniture from all over the castle. There were banners from each house on the walls that looked like they might be from the founder's time. The room was a nice enough size but it might take a little to get used to the decoration. We'll probably be gone before we do.
Their thoughts were interrupted by the house elves. "Master and Mistress! We's are very happy to serve. Master may call Cocoa and Mistress may call Nod for anythings yous needing. Masters room is on that side, Mistress on this side."
"Thank you Nod, I don't need anything right now."
"Dismissed Cocoa."
"Did you have to be rude? They were nice to us!"
"Granger, it's a house elf. They live to be nice to wizards. That's their job."
"Still, you're nice to waiters at restaurants, aren't you?"
Draco only snorted in response. She probably should have seen that coming.
"Fine whatever Mr. I'm better than everyone"
"Glad you finally realize that."
"That was sarcasm Malfoy. I'm going to my room now."
As she entered her room, the decorations seemed tame compared to the clothes they found for her. She could cope with sleeping on orange sheets with purple pillows and an odd shade of dulled neon blue blanket... but she wasn't so sure about wearing the clothes. The first dress she picked up was obviously from the 1500s and would take at least three people to get her into it with all the buttons and ties and layers. Luckily the next dress was from the 1920s. Very modest, in a gorgeous silver grey tone. A bit too dressy for everyday wear though, she might have to see about finding it again when she got back home. A few more dresses from different centuries were hung nicely in front of her... and finally, she found the casual clothes. There was a whole collection of various colored leisure suits and rompers and an unfortunate section of poorly done tie dye. She finally found a passable pair of jeans and a nice muted jumper in the mix and figured that would do for now.
Suddenly a strange sound came from the left of her room. She walked to the doorway to watch Malfoy ranting about the clothing he was given. Apparently black wasn't one of his options. She listened to him for a few seconds before clearing her throat to get his attention and hopefully end the rant.
"Pink, Granger. They gave me PINK CLOTHES. I will not be seen in pink. or orange. There isn't a single bit that I would be caught dead in."
Hermione shook her head and walked back to her own closet to keep searching. In the back, there were school uniforms from through the years. Not much has changed here, just skirt length. She started to charm some of the clothes to make them more her style and size. Eventually, she came to the pajamas. She picked out a set to wear and snuggled into the very strange bed. It was still early but time traveling made for a tiring day. She started to make a list in her head of things she needed to do tomorrow. Sundays were usually when she had to force Harry and Ron to do their essays, so she found herself with hours of free time.
Chapter 9: Pretty in pink (and orange)
End Notes:
The photo I picture now embroidered on Sirius' back is a drawing by naomi_lord and can be found on Instagram and etsy. It's the most adorable danger noodle ever so you definitely want to check it out.
Side note: the two things Sirius said are Irish blessings that I grew up with. I definitely don't own them and the original writer is unknown for both.
Hermione was in the middle of a very peaceful dream when a scream woke her. Malfoy was now shouting at his house elf about his very expensive clothes and how they were ruined now. She decided to hop into the shower and apologize to Cocoa for Malfoy later, no use trying to change his mind about this for now. Maybe after school, I can work to make people appreciate the elves more.
After her shower, Malfoy seemed to be calm- well, calmer than before. I'm not sure if he is ever actually calm. He seems to always be agitated. He was in a darling orange jumper that actually looked good on him, giving him some color in his normally too pale cheeks. Though, it definitely made his hair stand out. She slipped on her zip up jumper and charmed it black to match her dark jeans before heading back to the common room where Draco was still sulking on the very lovely couch that was definitely from the Hufflepuff common room. He looked up at her and growled out "Oh I see they gave you something sensible to wear"
"Well, I didn't yell at Nod all morning, so they probably like me better. Haven't you ever heard you catch more flies with honey?"
"Granger now is not the time for your stupid muggle sayings. I can't let Father see me like this!"
"Really? It's just a jumper. Don't be so dramatic."
"You know I can hear the giggle in your voice right?"
"Fine, stay. Don't get to enjoy breakfast. Sulking about isn't going to make this week go faster, so you may as well get over it."
With that, she headed down to breakfast. She heard the door open when she was a few feet away, it seems hunger trumped embarrassment. As they were making their way down to the Great Hall, the Marauders caught up with them. Sirius was the first to greet them.
"Hey Hermione, Mini Malfoy. Nice jumper there"
Hermione shot an exasperated look at Sirius, mouthing really? before turning back to Draco who was glaring at them. Well, this is a great start to the day. The group headed down to the Great Hall and right as they hit the doors, Hermione pulled her wand on Draco. None of the boys knew quite how to react as she smirked and said a quick "Colovaria" and his jumper turned black, just like hers. She started walking away and looked over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow "Well, you are a wizard aren't you Malfoy?"
After breakfast, the boys and girls of Gryffindor went flying again until lunch. After lunch, she ended up helping them with homework while she read Hogwarts a History again. As the week progressed she fell into a routine- Eat with the Gryffindors, sit in on the classes she wanted to, fly whenever the boys wanted, and crash in the head dorm. Draco followed a similar pattern, but his involved fewer classes and more sitting in the Slytherin common room talking mainly with Regulus.
Hermione had been taking notes of stories to tell Harry about his parents the whole time. She had gotten rather close with Lily and Peter over the week. Peter had no problem talking to her about James and all the antics the Marauders got up to. Remus wasn't too far behind as a friend, but being the week of the full moon he was a little snippy with everyone. Before she knew it, Friday had come and she had a surprise sitting on her plate at breakfast.
The elves had made her a waffle with her favorite toppings. James was the first to see the waffle with a little card with her name next to it.
"Hey Little Bear, how come you didn't tell us?"
"Tell you what?"
Sirius was the next to pipe in "Well, love, the elves made you a special breakfast. They only do that on a special day of the year."
Peter took in her puzzled face and asked: "Do they not do birthday waffles in your time?"
James and Sirius both looked appalled when she shook her head.
"I guess it didn't occur to me. My brain still thinks it's mid-June"
"How old are you now?"
"Um, I guess I would be 15. Since negative 4 isn't an answer..."
"Well, you know what this means, right Moony?"
"Sirius. No."
"Oh yes. We must. it's tradition."
"Sirius, I think you should listen to him"
"And let the new girl down? No way. She already suffered through years of no birthday waffles. What kind of friend would I be if I didn't properly announce a gal's 15th birthday?"
James' eyes widened "Sirius. really, I don't think Little Bear wants you to."
Peter nodded "Really man, you probably shouldn't"
Remus, knowing it was a losing effort tried one final time "Sirius, you'll regret this"
Sirius just smiled and hopped up on the table and put his wand to his throat "Attention Hogwarts! We have a birthday today! This very pretty lady here has just turned 15! May you always have walls for the winds, a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, laughter to cheer you, those who love you near you, and all your heart may desire. But most of all as you slide down the banister of life, may all the splinters never point the wrong way! Happy Birthday, Hermione!" Then he hopped down and gave Hermione a big hug. None of his friends decided to point out that the back half of his head was neon pink now. They also failed to mention the very sparkly gemstones sprinkled in his hair. Really, why even point out the newest addition to the back of his robes with the most adorable snake huddled in a scarf? He'd figure it out eventually... Hermione just smiled and tucked her wand back up her sleeve and tucked into her waffle. He was doing so good until that last line.
At the Slytherin table, Draco and Regulus were trying their hardest not to laugh. It seemed to be the general consensus that no one tells Sirius Orion Black just how he was paying for that stunt. Draco scribbled a quick spell on a piece of paper and folded it into a crane. When it landed in front of Hermione, she opened it up and looked at Draco. Then she applied one final spell to Sirius.
Granger, if you want him to not see it try Obman v otrazhenii to avoid him seeing it in the mirror for a couple hours.
Chapter 10: Bookworms Everywhere
End Notes:
again, the adorable danger noodle I'm picturing doesn't belong to me, though I did buy the sticker of it for my lap top.
The next morning, Dumbledore summoned the entire group to his office to explain the spell and what will happen after. When they got the notice at dinner, the girls said they would do a makeover for Hermione before they went to the Ministry tonight, so that she looked "ready to conquer 1993". The Marauders told her that they would give her tips on how to best get away with things around the castle. Everyone laughed at Sirius insisting she needed fun in her life and that she needed to learn a proper prank or two. He still had pink hair at the time.
Shortly after his declaration, a very high pitched scream could be heard throughout Gryffindor tower. Apparently, the mirror charm wore off... Hermione smiled as he ran down the stairs towards her, yelling "why can't I change it back?"
Alice, being the only girl who could keep a straight face said "Why would you want to Sirius? It looks good on you." Hermione was struggling to keep a straight face while Marls and Lily started to braid his hair while Alice kept talking. "I mean really Sirius, pink is definitely your color. she did you a favor. though, the glitter and the snake might be a bit much. Good thing you got rid of the sparkles. They were a bit too in your face, even for you"
"What do you mean by snake?"
At this Hermione lost it and held up his cloak. The snake and scarf were still embroidered on the back in full color. The tongue was charmed to flick whenever someone got close. Once she finally stopped laughing, she said "Both of these charms are set to only respond to me, So only I can remove them... Still think I need to learn a proper prank?"
After breakfast, the whole group gathered inside his office, Sirius back to his normal Black hair, though now it had some braids. Dumbledore began as soon as everyone sat down.
"Welcome, let's get right to the reason for this meeting. Miss Granger and the younger Mister Malfoy will be performing a spell tonight to return them to their time. You all have the choice to wait here or go with and see them off. We will gather right after dinner and floo to the ministry where the ingredients are being prepared. The spell is fairly simple Et colligentes ad tempus adit harenas bisque pulvis - Per virtutem autem ejus humilem meridiem - Adducere ad me ubi est inventus - De viatoribus non aetas diem." Then he handed the written incantation to Draco and Hermione. "You can look it over now and ask any questions you have."
Remus looked over Hermione's shoulder and worked on translating what he could. It seemed that Regulus had the same idea with Draco's copy. The four of them started to talk, much to the amusement of Dumbledore who just relaxed in his seat and waited.
"That first line is talking about the sands of time. Tempus adit harenas." Came from Regulus first
"Yeah, then the rest... gathering dust maybe..." Was Remus' response.
"So the sands of time gather dust? Okay, that makes enough sense. This makes it seem like crystallized time will be one of the ingredients, probably why it took so long to get everything together." Added Draco
Hermione had started on the second line already "So then it says by virtue of its low glow. I'm guessing the spell will be done as the sun sets then, the ingredients must be most powerful at dusk."
"Bring me where it's found? That one really doesn't make sense."
Hermione leaned over and grabbed some parchment and started to write out a bunch of phrases trying to sort what it could mean. She began to mumble to herself after the fourth one, and even Remus couldn't understand most of what she was saying (and he could hear every word). He tried to interrupt her but she didn't seem to notice. After another minute she called for Nod and asked him please to bring her a certain book from her room thank you very much. He was back in a couple seconds and she thanked him again and started to rifle through the pages, chewing on her quill then mumbling more and scribbling on her parchment.
Regulus and Remus both tried to get her attention but Draco just said "Don't you remember the first day we got here? When she starts thinking- you just have to wait."
James started laughing and poked Lily "Oh I never thought I would see someone that studies harder than you do!"
Hermione finally looked up and spoke: "Headmaster, could this be the right translation?" and she handed him a sheet of parchment.
"Yes, Miss Granger I believe that is the proper phrasing."
"Okay, so I wasn't able to find any Latin incantations referencing both a place and a time, so I was looking through the general guidelines for proper spell creation in this book. It states that in theory using both a location and a time in the same phrase can cause confusion in some languages. Latin is one of those languages. It's only a theory because no one has wanted to test the phrasing on themselves yet, but that's a different point. In the translation, is found forces a location into the phrase so the time is overridden. So the possible phrase that seems most likely would be Bring me to when I should be found. Though when translated for the spell it loses the time identifier. This will be overruled by the crystallized time that we think will be present."
Draco raised an eyebrow "And this is why he calls you an insufferable know-it-all." pointing at Snape
"I have never said such a thing... Though it applies."
Regulus then added in "The final line is obvious at least. The traveler's age, not a day. They want to avoid another Mintumble disaster."
Draco then added it all together "okay, so it's: The sands of time gather dust, by virtue of its low glow, bring me back to when I should be found, the traveler's age not a day... That seems straight forward."
"so, what does that mean for the rest of us? Not to be rude but we don't seem to have a part in this"
"I'm glad you asked Peter. After they leave, I plan on having you back here to review your experiences for research. There isn't much literature on the people who are observers"
At this Hermione looked up and raised her eyebrow. How did they not realize he was lying? He is obviously not mentioning a large portion of that interaction! Draco caught her eye, he was obviously just as aware of the deception.
After that question, they all headed back to say their individual goodbyes. The Gryffindor girls were planning on staying with Hermione and the boys made excuses for why they couldn't. Hermione knew the truth though. it was a full moon and they all saw him off to the whomping willow and then collected him in the morning.
Chapter 11: The Final Hours
The Marauder's all but dragged Hermione from the Headmaster's office shouting back to the girls that "They would have their time to play dress up after lunch, we're hitting the pitch!" It turned out the entire group ended up heading to the pitch together, some stayed in the stands and the rest flew on their brooms. It didn't take long before they pulled out the practice set and started to play a fun game. Regulus and Draco were arguing over who would play seeker, James played chaser and talked Hermione into trying to be a chaser as well. A few failed attempts at catches and one unfortunate fall later, it was decided that chaser was definitely not her strong suit. After trying all the positions, she ended up as the seeker for the small team. It had taken the Slytherins just as long to put Draco at the hoops and Regulus chasing the practice snitch. They didn't keep score, both teams insisting they obviously won. Regulus and Hermione each caught the snitch once and were going for a tie breaker when Remus got their attention and called lunch.
As they made their way back to the castle, Remus and Lily were talking about the runes homework they were working on in the stands. Lily was convinced that the Jera appearing in the text was meant to be an omen of a good season to come. Remus, on the other hand, felt it was lying in opposition and therefore the translation would be an omen of a coming bad season. James was talking with Sirius and Peter about the upcoming quidditch tryouts and how awesome it would be for all three of them to be on the pitch together. Hermione just kept pace, thinking about how excited Harry would be to hear these little everyday interactions she's seen with his parents. After lunch, the girls took Hermione up to their rooms for a makeover and banned the boys from peeking.
Draco sat in the Slytherin common room with his group, trying not to lash out as they all tried to sneak in little questions about the future. Though, their skills in deception left much to be desired. Regulus still hadn't let it go that Draco didn't know him before coming to the past; he had come to the wrong conclusion however and assumed he was disowned by the family. Those theories were getting less and less understandable as time went on. His first guess was finding a muggleborn, though at one point he was convinced that Sirius played the perfect heir, poisoned the family against him and then burned him off the family tree after their parents died. Active imagination that one.
Rabastan kept asking about his future (non-existent) wife, Rudolphus was trying to figure out how the Dark Lord died and Lucius was asking about the state of the Malfoy vaults. Severus was the only one not trying to force information it off him that would change the future- he was happy to never know what the future held for a half blood who was disowned by the wizarding part of his family with a drunken father.
All in all, Draco was getting close to needing a pain potion for the massive headache from their not so subtle attempts. He was starting to miss Granger, at least she didn't ask ridiculous questions.
Right before dinner, the girls gathered the boys for the "big reveal." Hermione was laughing at the spectacle they were making of the whole thing. She came down the stairs with a huge smile on her face wearing Lily's favorite sun dress. They had somehow wrestled her hair into a French braid... It took various straightening charms (though somehow the curls still weren't tamed), some of Lily's hair products and a few very, very strong sticking charms. She had her favorite sneakers still because she refused to deal with heels walking through the ministry. The girls had convinced her to some pink eye shadow to match the dress, some mascara so her eyes looked finished and some lip smackers to make her lips shiny.
It really wasn't much of a change besides a slight taming of her hair, but the boys clapped and whistled all the same. When she hit the bottom step, each of the boys spun her around to "inspect the ladies hard work." Even Remus got in on the fun, despite looking like he was about to be sick thanks to the full the end, everyone was laughing so hard their sides hurt. The girls admitted that the time was mostly spent on girl talk, trying to talk Hermione into spilling her crushes name. They were completely unsuccessful.
With parting hugs from the Marauders, the girls headed to the headmaster's office, where Draco was waiting with a few of the Slytherins. Hermione immediately recognized his farewell party: Lucius, Narcissa, Severus, Rabastan, and Regulus.
The ten teens filed into his office and were greeted by Dumbledore and McGonagall, who still looked displeased by the pair. Maybe I can ask her when we get back home why exactly she was so angry about our presence. Once they were in the office, Dumbledore reminded them that they would all floo through to Ministry of Magic, Department of Mysteries and they would be lead into the ceremony room from there. He briefly went over the incantation to ensure the teens had the pronunciation correct then held out a bag of floo powder to them and they headed through to the Ministry.
When they walked into the ceremony room, Hermione was reminded of a time when she was eight and broke her arm. Her parents had taken her to the local teaching hospital, the one they would have attended if they hadn't chosen to be dentists. The room was split into two levels. The bottom was where she sat, the top level was a balcony that was large enough to hold an entire class of students to witness the proper way to reset a broken arm. The doctor working on her was describing the process as she went through, Hermione was intrigued by the description. In this room, the upper level was filled with people in many different robe colors, it seemed everyone was coming to see the new magic that was being pulled together.
Chapter 12: The Ceremony
End Notes:
This wonderful revelation came from Tallen93. Yes, Draco and Hermione definitely had some trouble with the timeline.
I do have fan casts for everyone. Feel free to ask if you want a mental image or let me know your favorite. I'm always looking for perfect faces.
Also, now you know what Dumbledore was hiding in that little meeting! But you get to wait to find out the new pair... any guesses?
The level they stood on was a giant circle, a clock face overlaid with a compass, where the cardinal directions lined up with the numbers twelve (North), three (East), six (South) and nine (West). A bowl was laid at each number, full of various ingredients for the spell. Severus, Draco, Lily, and Hermione were trying to see what each bowl contained while the others hung back and waited to say goodbye and watch the ceremony from above.
The circle also contained four unspeakables, chanting in different languages to cleanse and bless each ingredient. The easy ones to spot where the four elements- to the North, a bowl of Earth, probably taken from Hogwarts as that would be best to channel the magic of any student taught there. To the South was a bowl that was empty, to signify air. To the East, a bowl of fire. To the West, a bowl of water. The ritual group was chanting over the air bowl now vetry s yuga blagoslovlyayut i ochishchayut prostranstvo dlya etogo obryada. Each of the unspeakables repeated the sentiment in a different language, ending with the one who spoke in English "winds from the south bless and purify the space for this rite"
This repeated at each bowl, all four would speak, one at a time - in Latin, Russian, Gaelic, and English. From the blessings, the four teens found that the bowls contained sage, nightshade, iron, wood, crystals to symbolize daylight, Onyx to symbolize nighttime, a plant and phoenix feathers for life and rebirth, and finally crow feathers and ashes for death. Finally, they blessed the crystallized time in a large bowl in the middle. The other bowls were set on the numbers opposite their opposing forces.
It was finally time for everyone but Draco and Hermione to head upstairs. The girls took turns giving Hermione hugs and reminding her to come find them in the future. Draco's lot were noticeably less affectionate, it was all handshakes and stiff words. The four unspeakables brought Draco first into the circle, walking him all the way around the clock face, until they finally they seemed to decide to place him with his back to to the bowl containing the air, with his hands cupped together in the crystallized time. They repeated the process with Hermione, her back ending towards the fire, placing her hands above the bowl, cupped palms down.
Once they joined the upper area of the room, Draco and Hermione started to recite the words they had learned. The first time through nothing really happened, but the unspeakables motioned for them to continue. The second time through, the air began to thicken - like right before a storm blows in, when the calm is thick and difficult to breathe in. The third time through, the ingredients began to rise in the air above their bowls, the flame becoming a pillar, the water pulsing in waves. The fourth time through, the elements and ingredients began to swirl along the platform, forming a circle and dancing around, spanning from floor to ceiling. The fifth time, the circle created began to close in on Hermione and Draco. The sixth time, Hermione's braid was coming undone, Draco's hair was forming a halo about his head - both had sparks through their hair, crackling with the power within the circle. Then they began the seventh time through.
Et colligentes ad tempus adit harenas bisque pulvis - The sand of crystallized time that had been floating in the air since the third time through began to form a ball between their hands, swirling about in a globe.
Per virtutem autem ejus humilem meridiem - The sands began to glow as it moved between their hands, casting a gentle glow inside the circle of fire around them.
Adducere ad me ubi est inventus - The glow turned into a blinding light, both Hermione and Draco closed their eyes as it became too hard to look upon
De viatoribus non aetas diem - The fire was extinguished, the light went out and there was silence except for shuffling in the upper area.
The wizards and witches were all trying to get light into the room, but even a lumos maxima was only shedding light a matter of inches. After a few minutes, the dense darkness gathered below the floor of the upper balcony, still blocking their view of the platform, but allowing them to see one another. The ministry officials were all talking over the process, taking notes and shaking hands. The Gryffindors and Slytherins were all excited about the magic they just witnessed. It was beyond what they had seen at the school thus far.
Dumbledore walked over to the group and clapped his hands once. "It is almost time to head back to the school. We will first gather your memories for the pensieve they have created for this event. Unfortunately, we must keep this a secret and will be offering you two choices, you may keep your memories of this week and ceremony and be bound by an unbreakable vow to not reveal anything you have learned to anyone who doesn't know already, or you may choose to forget the week entirely. We are offering the same to all who came to know Miss Granger and the future Mister Malfoy." This was obviously met with a great deal of anger in the teens.
The general consensus among them seemed to be "you can't do that!" A conclusion that was ultimately wrong... The ministry had, in fact, ordered Dumbledore to submit all the students close to the two to be obliviated. He had bargained with them to allow a vow so the students may have a choice. They were too busy shouting to notice that the darkness below had faded until a squeal came from the main floor. A very high pitched scream that seemed to be of joy but was rather painful to the ear.
"Granger, what the fuck was that sound you just made?"
At that, everyone turned to look at the platform. Where there were two teens before, now stood four. Draco was holding a glass ball that had formed during the final reading of the incantation. He gently laid it down in the bowl and looked at the other three teens now standing with him, then he spoke again "And what the fuck are you two doing here?"
The new witch spoke first "Cronus sent me with a message. You are to remember the tale of feathers in the wind. You have been plucked from your time and sent into the wind. Too much has changed for you to be gathered and returned. This is your time now. This is our time. For only here are will able to exist."
"So we... we can't ever go back can we?" Hermione asked quietly.
The other young wizard spoke at this "Well- mate, Granger... no. you can't. None of us can. Something you two did destroy the plans the fates had laid out and forced into reality. We were destroyed. Cronus didn't tell us much. Just that we were meant to be but had no other place. Oh, and that you two seriously pissed off the fates and to expect to be used to fix it. You'll have fun with those three if you mess up, well, mess up again and they need to actually talk with you. Right harpies the lot of them are."
Chapter 13: Mind magic, the traitor and a dog pile
Hermione was standing still, realizing that there was no "home" to return to anymore. Everything had changed. Everything had changed. There they stood- the top three in their class and the top of the year below them... and we're all fucked, utterly fucked. The God of fucking time himself told them so. And there was nothing they could do to change it. Well, change it more than they already had... Not only was there no "home", they made it so bad two people were gone. Well, I guess here is not gone, though it may as well be since they had no home either.
Draco was trying in vain to smooth down his hair after the excess of magic left it in a rather unfortunate state. He finally looked up at the gallery and realized their little discussion had a very silent audience. Yup, definitely still in the 70s. Pity, that. He cleared his throat and pointed up...
Dumbledore was the first to speak. "I take it you know our two new visitors?"
"Yes, we do."
"Well, it seems we will not be needing those memory charms after all. Minister Jenkins, I believe it is time for us to return to Hogwarts."
"Headmaster, you can't. We need to ensure the safety of the timeline. The future. You know what is coming... You've seen the monster."
"Yes, I know him well. But there is nothing to change what has occurred, we can only hope to improve that which we fear will come."
"And you think you can do it this way?"
"I do. No need to mess with young minds."
With that, Dumbledore led the teens down to the platform to join the others, and they all walked to the floo together. Dumbledore once again held out the bag of floo powder and instructed them all to travel through to Hogwarts, Headmaster's Office. They all piled in, waiting for him to come through, yawning. It was almost two in the morning by the time the darkness had receded, luckily it was Saturday so they could all sleep in the next day. When Dumbledore came back in he dismissed all but the four from the future then summoned Nod and Cocoa. "We need to expand the dorms you've made for Mister Malfoy and Miss Granger. They will each need a new bed and new clothes. Thank you" After they headed off, the four teens sat down.
"So, have I heard the whole message from Cronus and the fates?"
"No, but the message was not for you to hear anyways, not all of it, and definitely not now. Some things are only revealed at the time when they are needed. All things must happen when they are meant to."
"And you son, anything you wish to add?"
"No, sir. There was only the first message we passed along that was given to me. They talked with her more, she was there longer."
Hermione turned to her, asking "Really? How much longer were you there?"
She smiled and said nothing.
"She disappeared the day before me." Draco raised his eyebrow at him knowing she had disappeared. "We were on high alert because you two were missing, so they noticed right away you prat, put the look away."
"What did they think happened to us?"
"Well, the witnesses weren't the best so, they had no idea. I mean come on mate. Crabbe and Goyle? You really think they had any useful details?"
"But Ron and Harry were there too!"
"Weasel blamed it on Draco. He said something like It was obviously Malfoy. He is evil! I tuned him out after that, but they didn't seem to gather anything from it. And Potter didn't want you in trouble for punching so he decided to say he didn't see anything."
"Wonderful. So you just let everyone worry Headmaster?"
"Miss Granger, if we had been able to send you back, the minister would have proceeded to also adjust my memory on your presence, to avoid altering the future."
"What do you mean also? Who else would have been altered?"
"Everyone, by order of the minister. Only the unspeakables would have remembered your trip. But since you are staying here, no one will need to be forgotten."
"Okay, back to the other topic. You were gone for a day and they gave you more information that you're going to randomly give us when you feel like it?"
"I wouldn't say it was a day, Cronus is the God of time after all. I'm not sure exactly how long we talked. The standard time markers were missing in his realm... We didn't even eat much, but there were so many lessons. Time is an intricately balanced scale with so many arms. One small tap and the entire structure falls. It's rather like a child's building block creation. It looks stronger than it is. "
Draco just glared at her and took a deep breath "Whatever. so we have to wait until you feel like telling us everything?"
"No, like I said before, all things will be revealed when they need to. Things will happen when they must happen. I can perhaps explain another way if that helps? Time can be a rather difficult thing to comprehend if you can't see the connections forming."
"No, no... We get it, that was most helpful... I think it's time we get to sleep. Draco, I'm with you right?"
"Yup, we're all in one of the old head dorms."
"You say that like I actually know where it is."
All four headed to the room Draco and Hermione had been sharing, ready to sleep until lunch.
"Um, Draco... what exactly is up with the decoration here?"
"Don't. Just trust me on this one. You can't fix it and if you ask the elves to- they either sob or turn everything you own hideous colors and make it so you can't change it. Though I'm fairly sure Granger put them up to that."
"I may have suggested that you would appreciate a wardrobe that matches everything because you were just upset that the room was prettier than your clothes."
"Granger, I think we're going to get along just fine! that was brilliant."
Draco called him a traitor and walked into his room. The other three followed as soon they finished the tea that the elves had left out after adding the beds.
When the girls had returned to Gryffindor tower, they found a couch overflowing with three sleeping boys, cuddled together. James was on the right and had his arms wrapped around Sirius and Peter, and one leg draped over Sirius' hip. Peter was facing away from Sirius on the left of the small couch, and Sirius had turned so he was spooning Peter. They woke to the sound of laughter and immediately tried to move apart but failed miserably and ended up on the floor in a dog pile.
"So they're gone huh?"
"No, and there's actually two more that they seemed to be friends with. The way it sounded the God of Time prevented their return and now they are here for good."
Chapter 14: Death by Chocolate
End Notes:
"Death by Chocolate" is what we call chocolate lava cake
The next morning, well, afternoon or night would be better descriptors, the group started to wake up and walk about the castle.
Hermione was slow to get moving because she had sat in her room the night before talking and learning a little more about her new roommate. Cronus and the Fates had apparently taught her more than just what she needed to be their guide. She was going to be starting her fourth year along with the other time travelers.
After a quick shower, the two girls made her way to the kitchen then to the Marauders in the hospital wing where Remus was recovering. When they walked in, holding the surprises from the kitchen for all of them. They had asked Nod to get together special desserts for each of the boys and themselves. She already knew that Remus was a fan of anything chocolate, so she requested a double chocolate cake with fudge frosting topped with dark chocolate chips, with a core of melted chocolate. It was an old family recipe that her Nan had taught her, she had it memorized- Death by Chocolate. For Peter, she asked for carrot cake, something she noticed he always took a second slice of. James was made treacle tart, Sirius got fresh fruit and clotted cream on pastries. Hermione got herself a bit of the cake she had them make for Remus, and her friend wanted Lemon tarts. She had tried to pay Nod, but Nod informed her that house elves have no use for gold, the best payment is joy, thanks, and a nice master. So Hermione just thanked her and invited her to watch the look on everyone's face when they dug in.
Nod served everyone their treats, a bright smile on her face grew bigger as each of the boys thanked her for their favorite dessert. Remus was just starting to stir as she was getting around to serving him, and he was shocked to see the new girl sitting on the end of his bed as if she wasn't in his personal space.
She tilted her head and spoke "Hullo Professor. Though I guess in this time you're just Remus. It is a shame, we learned rather a lot from you I'm not sure what the professor will be like this year... Though, you didn't know what a nargle was or why they kept stealing my shoes. It's okay- I can teach you that, and the other creatures you didn't know. They didn't tell me I would come at the end of a full moon, I'm sure you'd rather meet me the first time under different circumstances. I first met you on the platform, exiting the train before we headed "
Remus just looked at her as she patted his leg and went back to talking with Hermione about rack-spurts, whatever that was... He couldn't exactly figure out who the tiny blond girl was... or why she seemed to know he was a werewolf... or, probably most importantly, why she was still on his bed basically petting his leg. Hermione had finally given up and agreed with her that she was- wait, why was Hermione still here?
"Yes, fine. My brain is fuzzy from the wrackspurts."
"Hermione, I thought you were leaving last night! What are you doing here and, well, who is this?"
"Oh, this is Luna Lovegood. She's from my time. Well, my original time. I'm told I can't go back now so you lot have to keep me... so I guess this is my time now."
"Why do you three not seem surprised by any of that?"
Sirius was the one to respond "Well, last night the girls got in late and told us all about it. We didn't know her name... but we knew there was a new girl and a new boy. You see, our little Hermione here and her friends pissed off the fates." At this, he tossed an arm around her shoulders and she flinched.
Luna noticed the movement and tilted her head and started talking before Sirius could continue "Hermione, you shouldn't fear the stories you were told. The secret was broken by another, but it won't be anymore. The fates have changed. He won't be an orphan this time."
Hermione launched herself at Luna before any of the boys could react, and she was crying repeating thank you thank you thank you. No one quite understood what Luna had said, but they'd soon get used to that. Remus just stared at the two girls now embracing on the foot of his bed, wondering how they could possibly not care they were so close to him, or if they even realized they were in his personal space... They both knew he was a werewolf and instead of running, they bring chocolate cake and sit on his hospital bed. After Hermione calmed down, Remus asked what the entire spell was like.
"It was so beautiful. At first, we felt nothing, but as we repeated the spell, power built in the room. Everything started to float in the air around us. We kept on repeating and everything swirled together and made a dome around us, slowly closing. The magic became more and more dense as the dome got closer, I could have reached out and touched the dome when the sphere was finally solid between our hands. And the light from the sphere, I've never seen anything so pure, so beautiful. And watching everything swirl around us was incredible. I could feel the fire calling out to me- touching my magic and pulsing in my veins. I've never felt anything as powerful as that. Then we finished and the light faded- Luna was next to me smiling."
"It makes sense that of all the parts of the ritual the fire was what called you, you always were a fire soul. You are a creative girl and when you care, you let your full passion unleash, you are a natural leader and you tend to act more than react. The fire will always call to you, it will always empower your magic. You will be drawn to it, in the same way, I am empowered by water. It lets me see what others don't. It only makes sense that you would have felt such a strong bond with your element. We all have them, though not everyone takes the time to discover what fuels them."
Luna, Remus decided, was one to really listen to...
Chapter 15: Dabberblimps, Sarcasm and a yellow room
It was dinnertime when Draco woke to someone kicking him. "Granger, I am not in the mood for this. Let me sleep."
A snort. "Not Granger mate. Not even close."
"Ah, so I didn't imagine all that. We really are fucked."
Another snort. "Yup"
"You could sound less cheerful about that you know."
"I could, but you see, it's much more fun to annoy you."
"Still just as sweet as ever I see."
"Mate, if you wanted sweet or kind you should have messed up someone else's life."
"I didn't do it on purpose!"
"I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse Draco."
"I was aiming for better. So, what exactly do you know? Please tell me you just didn't feel like sharing everything with Dumbledore because what you did share was almost no information."
"You know me so well. Okay, so you, me, Loony and Granger are all stuck here. They chose the spell as a breaking point- since you already fucked over Loony and me -"
"I already said it was an accident."
"I've decided. That makes it worse. Now shut up and let me finish. So, since you fucked us over, we were saved from the old timeline. Everyone else they decided to leave be, basically the fates have to fix everything anyway so they decided to burn the old future and start over from yesterday. We were given some idea of the direction they want the future to go, but I wasn't lying when I said Loony knew more. She is apparently better suited for the job of ringleader for us. She said something about gillywobbles or stropplefairies and water..."
"We're supposed to let Loony guide us? Please tell me you are joking."
"Nope."
"Fuck."
"Yup. Now get your ass out of this hideous excuse for a bed and let's get down to dinner. Dumbledore has sent notice that we should come see him after dinner."
"Yay."
"Sarcasm won't help. Get up. I'm hungry."
They got dressed and headed down to the great hall, Draco sat next to Lucius and began to fill his plate. "So, Father has decided that he wishes to meet you and determine if you will be allowed to use the Malfoy name or not since you are staying."
"Pleasant. Hello to you too Father. When exactly have I been summoned?"
"He will be in Hogsmeade to meet you the next time we visit."
"Fine. I'm borrowing one of your suits. I will not meet Grandfather in the clothes the elves threw together for me."
"I'm surprised you are wearing it now. I'll make sure you have something appropriate from one of us. And you? Are your parents going to be arranging things for you?"
"My father is currently in France. My mother, I believe, is ten. I very highly doubt it. I'll contact him after our meeting tonight. I really thought I was done dealing with him when he died. Thanks for that one by the way."
"How many times do I have to say I'm sorry it was a bloody accident."
"Technically, you have yet to apologize. But, you know, keep saying it's an accident, that's helping."
"Sarcasm won't help Theo."
"I have to write to my Father, only firewhiskey can help that conversation. But I only have sarcasm here, so I am going to keep using it."
Narcissa Black walked up and sat across from the three boys "We didn't have a chance to talk last night, are you going to introduce me to your friend Draco?"
"Mother, this is Theodore Thoros Nott. Theo, you remember my mother of course."
"You do realize now that you are staying you will have to stop calling me Mother, right? I'm, what, two years older than you?"
"The thought had occurred to me. It's weird to think of calling my Mother Narcissa."
Theo snorted "At least your mum is older than you. I could play nanny for mine."
Hermione, Luna, Sirius, Peter, and James all walked in the great hall together and sat at the Gryffindor table. Madam Pomfrey had insisted Remus stay overnight because he had scratched himself rather badly this transformation. Luna and Hermione had received a note while in the infirmary to meet with the Headmaster after dinner to plan their stay in the seventies since it was apparent that there was no other choice. You don't argue with Cronus and the fates.
Hermione was still thinking about the fact that Sirius, according to Luna, wasn't guilty. He hadn't betrayed his best friend and made Harry an orphan. She had spent a full week being cold and rude to him... how was he in Azkaban without being guilty? The whole thing was making her head hurt, to her last week Sirius Black was a 30-something prison escapee who murdered a dozen muggles in an explosion aimed at one of his best friends after his other best friend was killed by Voldemort because he broke the fidelius charm on their house. But that wasn't true. None of it.
"-our classes, right Hermione?"
"Umm, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention."
"I told you the wrackspurts are floating all around you."
"Yeah, Luna. I know. I need to make a dandelion headband tomorrow to help."
"Why would you do that? Are you trying to attract a Dabberblimp? They were near the boathouse in our time, maybe try there."
"No, I... Nevermind. Thanks, Luna. What were you asking Sirius?"
"Oh, I was asking if you think we'll be in the same classes."
"I think so. I was almost done with my third year, so it would make sense I would be fourth now. Luna was only in her second though."
"Oh, I was, but I'll be fourth as well."
They all waited for her to explain why but she just smiled.
After dinner, the Theo, Draco, Luna, and Hermione headed to the headmaster's office. Theo was hoping for a better alternative to contacting the man of his nightmares, one Thalen Cantankerus Nott. Hermione had no idea where she would end up- her parents hadn't met yet and her Grandparents had never known she was a witch, they had all passed away before she got her Hogwarts letter. Draco had his meeting set up, so he would be set - Grandfather Abraxas always had a soft spot for his Dragon. Luna, well... she hadn't exactly thought about it- she knew things would work out, so why bother with the details before it was necessary to?
"Welcome, welcome. Now. We have a few more questions today. First: It would seem the best to keep you in your current room if that is okay with all of you?"
All four nodded.
"Good, good. Next: from where you were sitting you gentlemen were Slytherin and you ladies were Gryffindor?"
Luna spoke up "No, I am a Ravenclaw sir."
"Okay, now, we will need you to meet with the professors over this week to be sure you are placed in the proper grade in this time. I am unsure what in your curriculum has changed, so we will test every subject and you can pick electives after. Now onto a more difficult question: Do I need to make arrangements for any of you while staying here or can we contact any of your family to explain the situation?"
Draco was the first to speak up "My Grandfather on my Father's side has already requested to meet me the next Hogsmeade weekend. If he doesn't wish to take me in I will contact my Mother's side. Between the Blacks and the Malfoys, I am sure I will be taken care of"
Theo spoke next "Well, I can talk to my Father but he isn't exactly the warm, fuzzy, take in orphans kind of man. I really didn't know much about my mother or her family. I was young when she died and after that, they weren't around much."
Hermione had her head down still "I will need help sir, most of my family didn't know I was a witch."
Luna spoke before Dumbledore could "Oh Hermione, don't worry, you're to be taken in by my Grandmother. She has already made you a room up."
"When did you ask her?"
"Why would I have needed to ask her? Mother knew we were coming all along. Grandmother made our rooms this summer. It's yellow. It will help with the wrackspurts, positive thoughts and all"
Chapter 16: A plan and a meltdown
"Okay, so it seems to me that we will revisit that question after you all have been given time to discuss. On to the next order of business. There is no precedence for this occurrence. The ministry was not sure how to handle it when they thought there were two who would be leaving. I can't say what they will or will not do. But know that there is a home for you here, and we will do our best to protect you, but we are at war. There are whispers that soon Minister Jenkins will be replaced. We can only hope it will be someone who seeks to protect the innocent and fight for justice."
There was a heavy pause after he made that statement. They were all aware of the war that would be going on for the next six years. Hermione thought of all the pain everyone she knew. She thought of the struggles of the past three years and the hatred she faced.
"Headmaster, what happens now, while we're waiting on that information?"
"We will set up your testing, the professors have agreed to each give up a free period to test you. They have requested that we test all of you at the same time. Tomorrow you will have Potions testing after breakfast and Divination after lunch. Each morning you'll be told where to report and when until everyone has been tested in every subject."
"Professor, what if we know we won't be taking a subject? Will we still have to test in that?" Hermione asked, thinking of Divination in particular.
"Yes, I spoke with Minister Jenkins this afternoon, she will be taking the results as well as the outcome of the family inquiries and making proper documents for you in this time, including the start of your school records. It will also allow you to get to know the Professors. If there are no more questions I believe it is nearing curfew."
As they walked back to their room, Theo and Draco were talking about their plans for meeting their families the next weekend. Draco had convinced Theo to let Abraxas invite Thalen to make the meeting easier. Thalen was very big on appearances and would never allow anything to sully his reputation in public. When they got back to the common room, Hermione silently headed up to her room. Theo watched her walk away and went to ask Luna, she saw his questioning look, smiled and said "The wrackspurts are just clearing up" and then she followed up the few stairs that lead to their room.
"Do you have any idea what she means"
Theo snorted "No, and I'm not sure I ever will. So did you already talk to Lucius about having everything set up?"
"Yeah, while you were talking to my mother. Abraxas is expecting me at the three broomsticks at noon. He will get back to us on if Thalen will expect you at the same time."
"You know she's right, you will have to stop calling her mother. Will I be able to borrow acceptable clothes from Lucius too?"
"Maybe. But you're closer to Rab's build though, maybe he'll let you borrow something. I have to borrow from Regulus anyways... Lucius is too tall."
Luna had been watching Hermione pace for a few minutes already. Luna finally placed a hand on her arm to still her pacing and led her to sit next to her. "What are you thinking?"
"Well, I know you seem to think your family will take me in but"
"She will."
"okay, but if she doesn't or can't... I have no one. My parents haven't even met yet. They had a hard enough time accepting I was a witch when they spent eleven years watching my accidental magic to understand that it wasn't a prank. I can't imagine how they'll react without any basis. What is Dumbledore going to say? Oh hello there, you two may have never met before but you are going to get married in 1978, and have a daughter in 1979. She'll randomly shatter glass and cause explosions and make things float in the air. Then she'll get invited to a school for magic when she is 11. in her third year we will give her a portable time machine- yes, they're real. This one is called a time turner. But then she'll punch her school bully in the face and they'll go from 6th June 1993 back to 13 Sep 1975. We tried to get them back to their time but it failed miserably so she's stuck here. Fancy getting together a year earlier than you were supposed to and taking in your now 14-year-old daughter from the future? No. He can't tell them anything. I can't tell them anything. I can't ever talk to my parents again." She stood up and started pacing after that statement, her face was covered in tears now. "I won't be heading home on the train with Ron and Harry ever again."
At this, she ended up crumpled on the floor sobbing, remembering everyone who she wouldn't be talking to again. All because I couldn't control my temper. Luna just helped her lay down on the bed and settled Hermione's head in her lap. She ran her fingers over Hermione's hair and started to hum a strange melody. "I'm alone Luna. My family is gone. My friends aren't born. The only people I have are the boy who hates me, his quiet friend and you, who I barely know. Remus is a teenager, not the best professor I had. You tell me the killer we were hiding from all year is innocent, we thought he was the reason Harry was an orphan. You know he was Harry's Godfather." She had been growing quieter and quieter and Luna's song and motions lulled her and she ended up falling asleep after a few minutes.
Chapter 17: A very nice arse indeed
End Notes:
FYI: these two chapters were inspired by a picture of my Theo fancast. it's on the pintrest board. and I'm not even a little bit sorry for the entire thing.
The next morning, Hermione woke up with her head on Luna's thigh. Luna had shifted and laid across the top of the bed when she was ready to fall asleep. Hermione was exhausted from crying and didn't even stir when Luna had moved. It was still barely past sunrise so she opted to take a long bath while everyone else slept. What she didn't expect was for Theo to have the same idea, only a few minutes earlier. He was just climbing down into the tub when she had opened the door and noticed him and his very nice arse. She let out a squeak and slammed the door and screamed "I'm sorry" as she ran back to her room fully intending to avoid Theo as long as possible.
She had gotten dressed as quickly as possible and hid out in the Gryffindor common room. She grabbed one of the books that was left sitting out by someone. About ten minutes after she got there, Remus came down and sat next to her, not wanting to disturb her reading. Soon the rest of the Marauder's had woken up and come down. They didn't seem to mind bothering her and immediately took the book away.
When they went down to breakfast, Hermione sat with her back to the Slytherins, which threw Sirius off a bit. Typically she kept an eye on Draco, almost like she was worried he would take off without her. Maybe now that she knows she's here for good, that fear is gone. He ended up sitting next to her and missed how, for the first time, she didn't flinch away- Remus and James, however, did notice. When Theo and Draco walked in, Remus also noticed Hermione blush and try to hide it behind her hair.
"So Little Bear, what are you lot up to today?" James said from his place across from her.
"We're going to do some tests to see where we're placed. First is potions after we eat. Then Divination after lunch."
"Did you have Slughorn in your time love?" Sirius asked her
"No, we had a rather grumpy professor in our time. He really didn't like me." Lily, Marls, and Mary had just sat down and were serving up breakfast now.
"I'm sure Slughorn will end up liking you, he likes smart students. Divination on the other hand- Professor Darsana is a unique individual. He, well... he is very... he's..."
"What Remus is too nice to say is that he's crazy Little Bear."
"James!"
"I bet he'll be better than the woman I had to study under."
"I wouldn't hold your breath love. Every year he reads my tea, he declares he sees a Grimm in my tea, yet, I'm still alive."
Marlene added in "He is insistent that we learn tarot on the cards he designed. I'm still convinced that we can't get a good reading because his designs do not reflect the actual card. I mean, who makes a King of swords without using a king or a sword? I really don't get it how a bird sitting in a tree signifies anything about judgement, command or ruler ship"
"Well, my teacher had a habit of declaring one of her students would die a horrible ghastly death every year. Strangely enough, it never happened... What do you think Professor Slughorn will do as a test?"
Remus responded "He will probably ask you if you're related to the Dagworth-Grangers, he's all about making connections. And he'll probably have you brew some potion a few levels below your ability and ask strange questions then say you're fourth-year material"
"Yeah, he tends to not pay much mind to muggleborns unless they show exceptional skill like Lily does."
"Please, I just do well because I listen when Sev makes a comment."
"I do too. But what he says makes no sense unless you are good at potions. I mean really who thought up the difference between dice and mince? both are tiny little pieces, what's the actual difference?" The conversation continued on with all the little differences in potions that could make your potion turn from "helpful elixir" to "death trap in a tiny vial" very easily. They also talked about the various quirks in the divination class. Apparently, nothing was done the usual way. The star charts were cross referenced with ones from the same day in previous years to merge and make a prediction. He had also made his own palm chart and forms of interpretation for that too. By the time everyone was done eating, Hermione had forgotten her morning mistake, until she saw Theo and did an amazingly accurate impression of a tomato.
When they gathered in the potions classroom they had been directed to, Professor Slughorn had done exactly what they had predicted: tried to find the connections to use them for... which was an epic fail considering none of them were actually connected to anyone in this time. He moved on to a simple test that had all four of them looking at each other (except Hermione, she only looked at Luna and Draco) trying to figure out if he thought they were incoming first or second years. After all- they learned that monkshood is just another name for wolfsbane their first ever lesson in potions. There was also a section on the dangers of a dull cutting knife, what were they, toddlers?
After that he had them brew burn paste and the antidote for common poisons. Hermione almost jumped out of her skin when Theo reached for the jar full of bezoar stones at the same time as her. She quickly gathered the rest of what she needed and set up in the farthest cauldron from Theo. He had quickly realized two things: Hermione was doing everything possible to avoid looking at him or being near him, and that meant she was obviously the one who opened the bathroom on him today. And Theo, being the fine upstanding gentleman he is, decided that meant he should definitely do everything possible to make Hermione look at him or be near him. It turns out, he was very good at grabbing her attention.
First, Theo had decided to accidentally drop his stirring rod and walk past Hermione to get a new one. Then he turned to Draco and almost yelled out a question on if his paste was the proper shade of orange- of course, it was. He then ran out of the ground unicorn horn and had to ask her for a pinch of hers. As Professor Slughorn was grading the potions, Theo made sure to be right next to Hermione and tried to talk her into a bet on who got the top marks. Hermione was bright red the entire test.
Chapter 18: Divining awkwardness
When they left the dungeons, Draco grabbed Theo and pulled him into one of the alcoves.
"Spill. Why in the world did you spend the entire test getting Granger's attention?"
"It amused me."
"Do you... do you like her? You realize any mention of liking a mudblood around Thalen will get you disowned immediately, right?"
"Being amused by and liking are not even in the same spell book Draco"
He rolled his eyes "Fine, so why was it so amusing to you?"
"Just watch at lunch, then I'll explain"
When lunch started, Hermione had again set her back to the Slytherin table. Well, that simply won't do. Theo grabbed Draco and dragged him directly in front of Hermione and put on his best charming smile. "Hello, Hermione."
She squeaked out a hello and blushed, again.
Draco looked at Theo, then back at Hermione who was trying very, very hard to look anywhere except Theo. Which of course lead Theo to lean over the table and into her personal space. He pulled out a ripped parchment and pointed at it. "see, my schedule got messed up. I need to know where the divination testing will be."
"s-sure. I can write it d-down." He handed her a quill, being sure to touch her hand, which somehow made her blush all the way to her fingertips. Once they walked away, Theo smirked at Draco.
"So, she has a crush on you?"
"Uh, no... not exactly. Well, I don't think so at least. She might... anyways, you know how I'm an early riser?"
"yes, it's one of your more obnoxious traits, right up there with inability to be quiet when others are asleep"
"If you wanted a quiet roommate, you should have ruined Blaise's life instead of mine."
"It. was. an. accident."
"Still doesn't make it better. Back to the actual topic. So I was up early, getting ready to take a bath when I hear the door open. Then, whoever opened it squeaked and ran away screaming she was sorry. I had no clue if it was Loony or Granger until we were in Potions today. She couldn't even look at me without blushing, much less talk to me."
"Oh, Merlin. Granger saw your arse?"
"Yup."
"And now, you're taking every opportunity to embarrass her?"
"Yup."
"hm. I'm in."
"Good. Divination will be so much fun."
As Draco and Theo proved, there was a great deal of divination that could bring up a bath or an arse. It really helped to play games with someone intelligent enough to catch their comments. Half the time they'd try to embarrass Goyle... he just simply didn't understand the joke was being made at his expense, and everyone knows a joke you have to explain isn't a funny joke.
But Hermione, oh Hermione, she caught every. single. reference. Apparently, despite her hatred for the subject- Hermione still took pride in knowing the mechanics of predictions. She just didn't have the sight as Trelawny put it. She could tell you what the symbols meant but couldn't figure out what they meant when all put together. It was an art, not a science... and Hermione was, without a doubt, a scientist without a talent for art.
When Draco asked about the pansy in the cup, Hermione choked on her tea. Later when Theo loudly announced the seven of swords in the "past" spot in his three card spread, Hermione turned a very fun shade of red. As they were looking into their crystal balls, Draco decided to ask Theo if he was able to see the person in water in his ball- saying it was probably a warning about drowning so they should be careful around water. Hermione squeaked. Theo smirked. It continued on like this through every single method they were testing on. Finally, it came time for palm reading. Draco rushed to Luna so fast that he knocked over a chair. Luna smiled at Draco, and Hermione glared.
She shuffled over to Theo and reluctantly held out her hand. He did her reading first because, as she discovered, it's hard to read someone's palm when you can't come close to looking at their hand without turning bright red. Though, she was also discovering that it was impossible to not blush as he gently ran his finger along the lines as he spoke about them.
"Well, the shape of your hand indicates a practical nature, and this shouldn't be a surprise, but your life line is in two sections. See, it is intersected and divided by your fate line. Though your fate line is... unorthodox. I've never seen this many branches. Though the main line indicates you will have success in your endeavors. This line here is your heart line- it's showing a long, consistent line. That bodes well for your future. My turn now" He smiled and held his hand out.
When she didn't take it, trying to figure read his palm without touching him, he finally decided to give her a break. "Listen, Hermione, it's okay. I forgot to lock the door so it's my fault. I'm used to being in the boy's dorms and we got over shyness our first year. I've just been giving you a hard time today because you are so awkward about it. Relax."
"So you're not mad?"
"No. Definitely just amused. Now read my palm so we can get out of here."
"Right. Okay. You have the same break in your life line, your heart line is strong, but it seems as if there are two of them. It's not your head line, that is here. It's saying that you shouldn't suffer any injuries or madness, congrats on that. It looks like you have an artistic hand."
"Good. We can finally eat now."
"Okay, you were right, those were the most ridiculous instructions I have ever received," Hermione said as soon as Remus sat across from her.
"Yup. How about Slughorn? You didn't tell us much about that test?"
"He asked us the difference between wolfsbane and monkshood."
Sirius started laughing "Oh Kitten, that's great."
"And we made burn paste. Like any incoming first year couldn't have made that."
"Little Bear I think you're the only one who wants tests to be harder." James piped in
"No, I think Remus gets upset too. Something about wasted studying" Peter added and was immediately swatted by Remus.
"Well, more testing tomorrow so, yay?"
"Yeah. Hopefully, they aren't all this awful"
Lily reached for a roll and said: "No, I think transfiguration and charms will actually be a challenge."
"And Arithimancy should be at just the right level. I wouldn't be surprised if you were just given the end of 3rd-year test that we were given"
"History of Magic... I'm not sure you'll actually get a test. Or if he'll even notice you're there. You'll probably get a lecture like it's a standard class period."
"Ancient Runes should be something that is a little above the standard 4th year's grasp to see how well you cope."
"Muggle Studies will be easy, you know about the muggle world like I do."
"Yes, but I know about the nineties, not the seventies."
"Right, that might cause a problem."
"You told her?"
"Yup. It stopped amusing me."
"It was the only fun I had."
"Well make your own fun." They got to the Slytherin table and sat down by Regulus. The rest of their group wasn't there yet.
"So how was your first day of testing?"
"Easy."
"Good."
Chapter 19: A dress and two trouble makers
Regulus had been thinking about what Draco had said when he got here and how he had reacted when he heard the name Regulus. He was definitely good at hiding things, but something about the name Regulus had shaken him up. It wasn't just that little bit that bugged him-Draco didn't know him. He had tried throughout the week to get any information he could out of Draco, but it was a losing battle. The obnoxious little shit was good at deflection. Now with the new arrival, he decided to switch tracks and work at getting information from Theo.
They were all sitting in the dungeons after dinner and Lucius was currently doing his best to prepare Draco for meeting with Abraxas. It became very clear to Regulus exactly how Draco got so good at masking things- it was never a good idea to roll your eyes or snap at your father.
"So, Theo, how are you adjusting to 1975?"
"Just fine. The room took a bit to get used to though"
"How so? I thought you were in Draco's year."
"Yes."
"So why would rooming together be weird."
"It's not Draco- it's the room. Too bright in the mornings, too many colors."
"Ah. So, this weekend you're meeting Mister Malfoy?"
"Yeah, and my own father. So excited about it."
Draco had apparently found a workable set of robes in Rodolphus' wardrobe because he landed in the seat next to Theo. "Theo, sarcasm won't help."
"You know the rule; sarcasm or firewhiskey." He held up his empty hand and waved a pretend cup around little "And, unfortunately, imaginary firewhiskey just doesn't work."
"Prat. Get your arse upstairs and see if Rab has a set you can borrow."
Luna had set up a meeting this weekend just like the boys had. She had insisted Hermione find blue to wear, so Hermione was currently trying to find anything in blue because arguing with Luna was pointless.
"Nod"
"Yes Missy Mini, you needs me?"
"Yes, my friend Luna says I should wear blue but nothing in here is blue. Can you help me out please?"
Nod took one of the very old dresses and made it float in the air in front of Hermione. As she clicked her fingers, layers started to come off and the length was getting shorter. She tried a powder blue first and shook her head. It took about ten different shades before Nod smiled.
"Mistress Mini put this on now."
She slipped it on, and it was the perfect length. it was a little baggy and the arms were a bit too short. When she turned around, Nod clicked her fingers and started to fix the dress. Soon it was perfect. An ocean blue dress with long bell sleeves with sections of lace in them. the dress fell right to her fingertips and had splashes of lace throughout.
"Thank you Nod, it's perfect!"
"Does Missy Luna need anything?"
"I'm not sure, but I'm sure she would love if you offered."
The next morning at breakfast, Hermione was reading the note from Dumbledore when two boys sat rather loudly across from her. She assumed it was James and Sirius, Peter and Remus were generally more coordinated. She started talking without actually looking up. "Hey boys, today I have History of Magic after breakfast. If you don't see me at lunch, come rescue me from the lecture hall"
"We'd be truly honored"
"to rescue a damsel in distress."
Hermione looked up at the sound of two voices that were definitely NOT James and Sirius. Instead of her friends, she was sitting across from two redheads with far too many freckles to count. They had identical grins on their faces and Hermione groaned.
"Gid, I believe the young miss sounds distressed now."
"Indeed she does Fab. Shall we rescue?"
"Yes. I believe she needs"
"A distraction while she eats!"
"Can you two stop that? It's creepy" Marls piped in as she sat down next to Hermione.
"Oh Marlene, We were just"
"Saying hello to the new girl!"
"She says hello back, leave."
"You are no fun"
"No fun at all" Gideon finished, but he listened to the witch currently holding her wand and ready to hex. They both walked off to join the other seventh years as Marlene turned to talk to Hermione.
"So how did that happen?"
"I have no clue. I was reading and they made the table shake when they sat down, I thought it was the boys so I told them to rescue me from Professor Binns if I didn't show up for lunch."
"Avoid them. They are worse than the Marauders."
"Oi. We're perfectly lovely aren't we kitten?" Sirius said as he walked up.
"Lovely is not the word I would use," Lily said under her breath.
"HEY! I heard that Evans!"
"You were supposed to Potter!"
Hermione rolled her eyes, they both picked at each other all the time and it was only a matter of time until they ended up together. Well, maybe not now. She'd have to talk to Luna and see if that's part of the grand plan. She hadn't spent enough time talking to Luna the past few days.
Luna had found her mother that morning at breakfast. Pandora had introduced her to all the Ravenclaws in 4th year as her daughter drifted to sit with the seventh years.
"So, you're her daughter?"
"In a way yes. I was her daughter."
The wizard across from her just gave her a look and went back to his book. The witch continued to talk to Luna.
"How can you be someone's daughter in a way? either you are or you aren't."
"I was her daughter in my life, but that has changed."
"How is that possible though?"
"The sisters of fate made a choice. Now, I am a daughter of fate in a way. Though I still am Mum's daughter."
"I can't decide if this is chaos theory or Schrödinger's cat."
"Oh, it is."
Chapter 20: Purebloods of all kinds
End Notes:
No, this does *not* make Hermione a pureblood.
The entire week progressed the same way, new testing every day. Dumbledore had informed them that they would know by Sunday and be joining classes on Monday. By the time Saturday rolled in, Hermione and Theo were nervous wrecks. Neither knew exactly how the day would go, despite their friends reassuring them that everything would work out. After their first talk during divination, Theo and Hermione had started talking more regularly. It wasn't exactly a friendship, but they used each other to vent. This is why, at three in the morning, they were sitting in their common room drinking cocoa.
"I know why I'm dreading today, but Looney's family is known to take in strays, so I'm wondering why you are."
"It's Luna. And... if they say no, I'm in an orphanage. You have other options."
"I have a man whose death was celebrated or a toddler mother who I didn't really know as an adult"
"Oh."
"Yeah. She'll take you in though."
"How do you know?"
"They chase after things no one else believes in because the world is full of things that need to be cared for." He responded doing a fairly accurate Luna impression.
"So I'm a nargle now? wonderful"
"A what?"
Hermione tried hard to remember exactly how Luna had described them, but she was better with written words than she was with listening. "I think they're the ones she says were hiding her clothes."
Theo just looked at her and shook his head. "You're not a nargle. You're a lost witch."
"You're not the first person to tell me that. So, why are you up at this hour?"
"Like I said. Today I meet a man whose death was widely celebrated. Even our family didn't mourn him. In all honesty, I know, and like, Grandpa Brax better than Thalen even though he lived almost a decade longer."
"Brax is Malfoy's grandfather?"
"Yeah. Draco was lucky."
"You are too."
"How do you figure that?"
"We're here. Second chance and all. We're supposed to change everything."
"I guess we are."
After breakfast, the four teens hopped into a carriage together. The boys were both in all black dress robes, Theo was tugging at his collar and looking infinitely less comfortable than Draco who had his signature king of the world attitude. Luna had found a very ruffly purple dress turquoise tights.
Both pairs were set to meet up with the adults at half past eleven, so they had some time to walk around. The girls ran into the Marauders and James insisted Hermione get some quidditch gear for tryouts the next week. She tried to insist she didn't have money so it was pointless, but Sirius and James laughed and split the bill for everything they said she would need. James said it was for the good of Gryffindor and Sirius laughed out Regulus will have a fit.
At 11:25, the girls headed back towards 3 Broomsticks where Pandora was waiting outside for them. She greeted both with a hug and started to lead them in. "Hermione, right? I helped to decorate your room. I hope you like it. I just picked up this to match your bed!"
Hermione took the bag and opened it up to find a pillow with a lemon tree branch print on the fabric. This is going to be an interesting room. "Thanks, Pandora."
She quickly discovered that the dreaminess was a family trait that got a little stronger each generation. Pandora was big on talking in riddles just like Luna, but she was less flowy in her movements. Gemma, Pandora's mother, was essentially Luna with etiquette lessons ingrained in the behaviors. Luna wasn't rude by any stretch of the imagination, but she could throw off anyone trying to maintain order.
"Hello, you are definitely the girl we have been expecting. You will be coming home with Pandora and Luna for the Holiday breaks and summer."
"Um, yes, sure."
"And here is some spending money for you two until we get you access to the vaults."
"Oh, you don't need to-"
"Of course I do. We would have set up both your access but we didn't know your names or wands"
"Thank you. You don't know what this means to me, I can't even begin to think how to thank you"
"Well, why don't we start with your name. Beyond that, keep your grades up and we'll call it even dear."
Theo had a slightly different experience. Where Hermione and Luna had a very brief mention of the plans, Theo and Draco were experiencing a full interrogation, though Draco seemed to be having an easier time. Abraxas was having a hard time keeping Thalen in line with little remarks reminding him of their location. After a few minutes, Thalen decided to be blunt.
"Theodore, why should I allow you to have the family name when Thoros is only ten? I know he has been raised as a proper Nott."
"Well sir, I'm a Nott whether you accept or deny it."
"That doesn't mean you will have access to the Nott vaults or properties."
"Thalen, he's your son."
"And you're just going to let your grandson take money that belongs to your rightful heir?"
"Yes. And if you have any family values, you would do the same."
Theo, Draco, and Lucius were all sitting completely still and somehow avoiding outward reactions. Draco could see the pain in Theo's eyes though. As they were growing up, he watched for years as Thalen cut down Theo every chance he got. This wasn't the first time Theo was told he would be as close to disowned as he could get without being blasted off the family tree. It also wasn't the worst thing he'd been told.
"He could be a disgrace to the family."
"Then I will take him into my own family. Then we'll see who raises the disgraceful Nott."
All three teens looked up shocked at that declaration, waiting to see how Thalen would react.
Chapter 21: Decisions and Discoveries
Hermione ended up spending her first bit of money getting a new quill and a new potions kit. Luna insisted that she buy the hippogriff feather quill. In the end, she had four new quills, some ink, and extra parchment.
When they got to the potions store, Pandora insisted she get a full leather case to keep all the tools in. It was gorgeous, but something she normally wouldn't buy, it was frivolous in her opinion. Pandora ended up winning the argument and Hermione was the new owner of one of the most expensive kits in the store. It contained stirring rods made of different materials, two different knife sets, and a leather strop to keep everything sharp. That part made her think of her father first teaching her how to properly use a knife. She had asked why to keep a knife sharp if it will cut her skin easier. He had smiled at her and said a sharp knife cuts where you want, a dull knife cuts where it wants.
When they met back up with the boys, she tried to pay Sirius and James back, neither would accept.
"No really you two, I can't just accept this! I have money and I said I would pay you back!"
"Love, watching you fly against my brother is going to be the best payment ever."
"Exactly little bear. Don't think anything of it. You'll be on the team with us and you'll need it."
"What makes you think I'll be on the team? We still haven't had try outs! What if I don't make it?"
"You will. We need a new seeker this year and not even our reserve seeker wasn't able to beat Regulus like you did."
"You do remember he also beat me to the snitch"
James reached into his pocket and pulled out a box "And that is why I got you this after we left."
Hermione opened the box. It was the training snitch she saw in the store. It was designed to grow with the player's skills. It had been charmed to accept commands depending on the conditions of play. "This is too much! It cost almost 300 galleons! A regular practice snitch would have worked just fine!"
"Well love, you probably won't like my gift either. But you don't actually get a choice in either."
Sirius handed her a new broom, just like the one James had been using when they taught her to fly. She didn't remember seeing the price, but she knew it was not cheap.
"I can't! really you guys!"
Peter smiled "You just have to smile and accept it. This one is from Remus and me"
She opened up the box and it was a jumper with a giant 7 and GRANGER on the back.
"It's to practice in so you don't get cold flying."
She gave all the boys a hug and they headed off to the carriages. The boys insisted she try out all the new gear.
Thalen had taken all of two minutes to decide.
He walked away.
Abraxas looked at Lucius and shrugged. "Looks like you now have two brothers instead of the one you were expecting." Then he looked at Theo. "I would apologize, but he's a miserable sod and I'm not sure you got the raw end of the deal"
"Trust me, sir, I'm aware. He didn't mellow with age. I think he actually got worse."
"Yeah, that was probably one of the nicest conversations we've ever had with him"
"He once told me that he was young enough to make a new heir with my betrothed because the kid would come from better stock. Said he'd enjoy watching me raise my brother as my own kid."
"Well, that's pleasant."
"Welcome to the Malfoy family Theodore Nott!"
"So you're having me keep Nott?"
"I think it will piss him off the most. Don't you agree?"
"Yes. yes, I do."
"Then you will stay a Nott for as long as you want."
They finished up lunch and Abraxas had the paperwork filled out and ready for Gringotts by the time they left, giving Lucius instructions to pay for everything until their keys came. The first stop they made was to get clothes. As they were getting measured, they all started to talk.
"Theo, I guess we were right growing up."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, we always said given half a chance Grandpa Brax would have taken you in!"
"Yeah, we did, didn't we."
"Was it really that bad?"
"I would run away to your house all the time when we were little. Father always insisted on being in charge of my life. He acted as if I was a stain on the family name from the time I was born because my Mother died in childbirth. Nevermind the fact that she was warned about getting pregnant at her indecently young age. He didn't even let her finish school before she was married and forced into giving birth, as she was to be a proper society wife she wouldn't need her diploma. Father wanted the heir so badly that he pushed them to have a child before she was ready. So when things got bad, I'd call Draco's elf, you all ordered the elf to listen to me if I was at my home. Then Grandpa Brax would read me stories and make the toys fly. He always talked about how children should be seen as a blessing, not a burden."
"Yeah, he wanted a big family."
"Now he has one."
"I guess he does."
When all the girls and the Marauders got back to the castle, Hermione called Nod to have her take all the new purchases back to the room so she could try out her new broom. Once everyone who was planning on flying was in the air, James released the training snitch.
Luna had talked Remus in to going off to the boathouse to search for a new creature that she said was there in the nineties, but might not be here now. He rolled his eyes and followed her, mumbling about someone making sure she didn't get lost.
Chapter 22: Plotting, Scheming and Selections
"I'm telling you, they were putting Hermione up there to train for Seeker. I'll rattle her the most, it will be an easy victory."
"Yeah, but if I go head to head with her, it will distract my brother and his friends more. So we'd throw off more of the team that way"
"So either we go for the snitch or we go for points."
"Either way her being in the air against us will be to our advantage... Hey, Wilkes!"
"Yeah?"
"Come here we have a plan."
"Sure give me a few to finish this essay." He wrote a few more things and then sat across from Draco and Regulus.
"So, what's this plan?"
"Tomorrow, we're both trying out for two positions. We want you to put us as the starter and reserve opposite each other."
"Explain. I don't just give out spots."
"Well, we think Gryffindor will have a new seeker - Hermione Granger. I get under her skin fairly easily."
"And my brother and his friends get protective of her around me"
"So, either of us as Seeker against her will throw off the team."
"Okay, and what good does it do me to make one of you seeker and the other a... what exactly?"
"We're getting there. See- if one of us is seeker and one of us is a chaser, but the lions don't know who will play which position until we take the field..."
"They will be unable to make a solid plan to defeat us. Because if he flies against her, she'll be distracted because they are always at each other's throats"
"And if he flies against her, his brother will be distracted trying to keep her safe."
"Fine. You both fly good enough to make the team tomorrow and you've got it."
The next day when they showed up for the tryouts, Wilkes had Rodolphus observe both boys closely. He might not be on the team but he was excellent at strategy and spotting skills others overlook.
"So, do you think it will work?"
"It could. They're both good enough to switch positions if you drill them enough."
"Yeah. Little Malfoy is a bit too cocky. He'll need to be taken down a few pegs to be a team player."
"That should be easy. First off, don't tell them they're on right away. Then let him overhear you a couple times saying you were expecting more from his talking. He'll be out here practicing every spare minute he has. Ego might be his downfall but it's also how you can train a Malfoy."
"How about Regulus?"
"You know that one. Use his brother. He hates him, but he still seeks his approval. Talk about Sirius' skills for the Chaser training. Suggest he ask his big brother for some tips on catching the ball without faltering on the broom. For seeker, I think praise will work better. He doesn't get much at home."
"And the other new guy, Theo?"
"He'll see through any mind games you try to play. Be straightforward with him. Tell him he needs to work on being able to hit the bludger backhand as well as he can forehand. Have him do target practice alternating days. He might have a talent switching arms too, have him work on that."
At dinner that night, all four teens were called to Dumbledore's office to be given their test results. As predicted, everyone was all set to start attending classes with the other fourth years.
"You are all set to start with potions, charms, transfiguration, defense again the dark arts, history of magic, herbology, and astronomy. I will need your elective courses selected soon. We suggest two or three electives for fourth years."
Hermione picked Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, deciding that her third year was too much stress to want to repeat the workload on top of Quidditch. She reasoned she could add CoMC if she didn't make the team. Luna picked care of Magical Creatures and Divination. Draco and Theo chose to join Hermione in both her choice. Draco had no desire to be near hippogriffs again.
"Okay, well I wasn't expecting answers right away but that makes this easier. Now, on to the next matter... your papers. May I know what plans you have for living arrangements?"
"I'll be staying with Pandora, Luna, and Gemma. Gemma is setting me up with a key to access their vaults so I won't need help"
"Same here"
"Yes, Gemma did indicate she would like copies of all your paperwork and any relevant school news for you both."
"I will be staying with Grandpa Brax and he'll be taking care of me."
"Very well, and you Theodore?"
"I am also staying with Abraxas. He offered to take me in when Thalen... Well, was Thalen."
"Ah," Dumbledore said as he wrote a few things down and tapped the stack of papers with his wand. They glowed red for a few seconds and then slowly faded to a silver before the light surrounding them disappeared. "Good, good. Everything is now in order. It seems your guardians already did their share of the paperwork, here are your copies. Welcome, officially, to 1975. You will find your birthdays have adjusted in year but not in date. We felt that would be the easiest for you all to adjust to."
"Thank you, headmaster."
"Now we come to another issue. The war that is at hand. I briefly spoke to you before about it. I have received information that you are currently a target for Voldemort. The instructions his followers were given were to bring you to him without harming any of you. He wants you to get information about where he goes wrong as he has been told he was dead."
Draco, though he would deny it, blushed when Dumbledore said this. Theo and Hermione both noticed and narrowed their eyes at him.
Luna just nodded and said "Oh yes, that was one of the things that caused the timeline to change so drastically. Originally he had no idea his bloodlust and obsession would lead to his part-death."
At this Hermione and Theo turned their narrowed eyes into a full glare.
Chapter 23: A fight and a first kiss
That Monday, Gryffindor had its team tryouts. Hermione was one of two trying out for Seeker. As it turns out, Sirius wasn't lying. She really didn't need to worry about the poor guy. He would have been better as a Keeper, or maybe a spectator... He really was a disaster on a broom. She would have thought he had a jinxed broom like Harry first year... but no one seemed phased by his terrible control.
She was given the position after one catch. The other seeker didn't seem too terribly upset. Sirius and James had both earned their old positions back by half an hour into the tryout. Peter had been talked in to trying for Keeper. He was surprisingly good at it considering the fight he put up when they suggested it.
Remus and Luna were in the stands cheering on their friends. At first, Gideon tried to object to the spy being allowed to stay until the spy stood on her tip toes and started to swat her hands around his head talking about wrackspurts making his brain fuzzy. It took fifteen minutes for Fabian to stop laughing long enough to get in the air.
By an hour in, the positions were all filled and Gideon had filled out the roster and submitted it:
Keeper: Peter Pettigrew
Seeker: Hermione Granger
Beaters: Sirius Black and Fabian Prewett
Chasers: James Potter, Gideon Prewett and Marlene McKinnon.
At lunch, it was painfully obvious that Theo had not forgiven Draco yet. He had decided to sit by Hermione and talk about classes. She hadn't told the Marauders about what she learned in the meeting, so they were puzzled. Regulus spotted Theo headed towards Gryffindor table as well.
"So, it looks like Slytherin and Gryffindor are paired up in the schedule a lot, but I was thinking maybe we could still work together on the others?"
"Really?"
"Well, yeah. Who wouldn't want to study with the girl who got the top marks?"
Hermione snorted, "Harry, Ron, this lot. Well except Remus, wherever he is"
Sirius popped out of his seat "Oh no, oh no we were supposed to go get him after tryouts. um. save me food."
Sirius almost knocked his brother over trying to get out the door.
"Hey, Nott. Granger. Why are you here?"
"He's mad at Malfoy. er, Draco, not his father."
"Do I even want to know why?"
Theo was silent for a bit then looked up at Hermione. "I'm not sure it's even my place to tell. And for the last time call me THEO. Both of you"
Both Hermione and Regulus jumped at the anger in his voice.
"Theo, you can tell as much as I can."
"Okay. Draco is the one who destroyed the timeline and kept us here."
Regulus reach out and patted Theo's shoulder, they might be eating at the Gryffindor table for a while.
"Wait, what are they doing here?" Came from behind them, Sirius had run into Remus on the way out and come back in.
"They are here to talk to me"
"But why? You already have the better Black here!"
"Sirius!"
"Don't worry Granger, I'm used to it."
"Sirius Black, you take that back NOW"
He, of course, did not take it back.
"Granger, really, it's fine."
"See? Even he knows it's true."
Regulus stood up and before anyone could react, both boys needed a trip to the hospital wing.
Lily and Severus came into the room both looking very put out. Lily headed to Sirius' bed and Severus stood by Regulus'. Theo and Hermione were already sitting between the two beds, arms crossed giving each of their blacks a disappointed look.
"Of all the immature I have seen this takes the cake, Sirius!"
"You are supposed to be the sensible one Regulus."
Then they both said, "What am I going to do with you Black?"
Theo snorted. "I don't know, maybe turn them white?"
Hermione grabbed her wand and did just that. The wonderful Black family locks were no longer a beautiful midnight black- the brothers now had stark white hair.
Severus' mouth twitched at the sight, Lily actually doubled over in laughter, Theo looked at Hermione with a cocked eyebrow and Hermione just shrugged and put her wand away.
"Oh come on! Please don't leave me like this Hermione!"
"You know the rules."
Sirius mumbled.
"You'll have to speak up. You know the rules but your brother doesn't."
"Fine. Our hair will stay like this until Hermione decides we're no longer being prats. Any attempt to get rid of it ourselves will end very, very badly."
Theo was giving Hermione a look of approval at her mischief.
Regulus looked at her in horror. "I can't stay like this!"
"You can and you will. You are family. I was an only child, I would have done anything to have another kid close in age to talk to and rely on! And here you two are- jinxing each other's teeth, making each other bleed! You will be lucky if you see your precious black hair before the end of the school year."
Both Blacks looked down and decided not speaking again was the best option.
Severus and Lily had left after Hermione's statement and were sitting at the bottom of the stairs to the infirmary.
"I just don't know anymore Sev. They're getting worse!" and she laid her head down on his shoulder.
"I know Lils."
"It would make life so much easier if they would just get along!"
He looped his arm around her waist and settled his chin on the top of her head. "I know Lils. One day they'll grow up"
She laughed and looked up at him. "Especially with Hermione there hexing them into shape."
He watched her smile after that remark and put his free hand on her cheek. "Then we shall supply her with any hexes she could possibly want."
They just paused for a moment and Lily took the opportunity to look at the boy she grew up with. Even a few weeks into school, he hadn't put back on the weight he lost every summer. She'd have to work on getting him over for more meals. His eyes were still a little sunken, but never lost the sparkle when he looked at her. And his lips were... She closed her eyes and forced herself out of that train of thought, Sev wouldn't think of her that way. She was just Lily, the little witch next door...
Severus, on the other hand, was noticing her staring at his lips and thinking that maybe, just maybe he had a chance. So he took it as soon as she closed her eyes. It was just a small kiss, and it ended with a squeak from Lily. He was suddenly worried he read the moment wrong, but Lily wrapped her arms around him and started to laugh.
"Laughter really isn't a good sign after a first kiss"
"Oh, Sev. It's a good laughter."
"Okay. So, um, Hogsmeade? I mean with me, like will you go with me?"
"As a date date?"
"If... If you want..."
"Yes, of course, I want that Sev!"
Chapter 24: Observations
Regulus and Sirius had given a half hearted apology to each other, Hermione did not buy it. That is why the entire great hall was currently staring at the brothers. Regulus had tried to get rid of the color and so he now sported a very, very pretty tiara. Unfortunately for his (normally) impeccable fashion sense, it clashed horribly with the Slytherin colors.
Hermione was the only one who kept a straight face around either brother all day. Theo had spent the entire day making cracks about family, the color white and of course the tiara on top of Reg's head. Hermione discovered that when his humor was pointed at someone else it was quite charming.
"So Granger, how long are you going to let them suffer?"
"I don't know Nott-"
"Theo, Theodore, Dory, Asshat. Just... Anything but Nott"
"Asshat? Really? Anyways. I really don't have a set limit. Until they stop acting like prats to each other. Or until you run out of jokes."
"If you go by that, they'll be changing the family name to White because you'll have to charm their grandkids with white hair"
"Well, they might have to anyway. They're not slowing down on treating each other like crap."
"I know. I always wanted a sibling but if that's how it is..."
It ended up taking another three days for Regulus to lose the white lock and tiara. Sirius... well... it was a week and counting.
He was really bad at learning lessons.
"Come on Hermione!"
"Are you going to stop being a jerk to your brother?"
"I'm trying to but"
"No. He's family. You're supposed to be his big brother. Do you know what that means?"
"Of course I do! And I still love him even if I give him crap!"
Sirius stormed away before realizing she had turned his hair back to black.
"Theo, you need to forgive me eventually"
"I will."
"When?"
"Eventually. Right now it's just... I lost everything."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"That's the first time you've ever said that to me"
"Is it?"
"Even when we were toddlers you never apologized."
"Oh."
"I will, you know."
"Thanks."
The next day, they were all sitting in Transfiguration, working on changing a dove into a guinea pig.
"You need to picture the end result. When it is clear in your mind, tap the dove three times. You will use the standard transfiguration spell Vera Verto."
She began to walk around, correcting students here and there. Hermione had noticed she was softening to her lately, but it still wasn't the same as it used to be. There was still an apparent mistrust that Hermione couldn't understand. She hadn't acted any differently in this time. When McGonagall got to their table, she cleared her throat to pull Hermione out of her daze.
"Oh, right... Vera Verto" Hermione's dove turned into a pudgy little guinea pig with a twitchy nose.
"Very good Miss Granger. Ten points to Gryffindor. And if you would, please stay after class."
She walked away from the table and Hermione spent the rest of the period worrying over getting in trouble for not paying attention.
"Miss Granger, I wanted to speak with you about your situation here."
"Oh, I'm not in trouble?"
"No dear. I've heard you are being taken in by Luna's Grandmother, is that correct?"
"Yes, they were very nice about it."
"Very good. I will be your Head of House for your remaining schooling. Dumbledore just informed a few of us of the full story of your arrival."
"I thought he would have done that before."
"No dear, he simply told me that two students had meddled where they shouldn't have and would be staying for a week. He couldn't very well keep that up after the other two arrived now could he?"
"No, I suppose not."
"I am quite certain Professors Flitwick and Slughorn will be keeping the other travelers back to have similar talks. I will assume not much has changed in the rules at Hogwarts, am I correct?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Very well. Are you adjusting well? Making friends?"
"Oh, yes. Actually, I'm making them easier than I did before."
"Do you have any questions for me? I assume you know where my office is."
"No questions and yes I do, you were my head of house in the future too."
"Very well, run off to your next class."
At lunch, Theo and Regulus sat at the Gryffindor table again. Theo and Sirius sat next to her and Regulus sat across from her, in between Peter and James. Remus was off at the Ravenclaw table with Luna.
"So what did McGonagall want?"
"Professor McGonagall wanted to introduce herself as my head of house and see how I was settling in."
"Yeah, Slughorn pulled us aside this morning before class. Apparently, now that I'm connected to the Malfoys I earn an invitation to something called the Slug Club."
Regulus laughed "Oh, enjoy that! I'm sure she'll get an invite now too. He favors pureblood families."
Hermione rolled her eyes and started to eat her sandwich. "I'm not a pureblood Reg."
"No, but you're living like one and connected like one. That's all he cares about."
Theo leaned over to her and asked about Sirius' hair. "I take it he hasn't noticed yet?" He still had it pulled back out of his face. Normally he wore it down, but since she had turned it white he hated seeing it, so he tied it back.
She reached over and untied the little black ribbon holding his hair back and Sirius let out a very dignified squawk and tried to hide his hair. Hermione had jumped back into Theo and started laughing at the sound when Sirius noticed his hair was black again.
"IT'S BACK! When did you change it back!"
He hugged Hermione, and since she was still leaning on Theo, he was dragged into the hug as well. Regulus was sitting across from them laughing at just how uncomfortable Theo looked with the entire situation.
"Black. Let go of me."
Sirius ignored Theo and kept thanking Hermione.
"Sirius, you're welcome. You can probably let us go now."
"Us?"
"Yes Black, us."
Sirius back up quickly and ended up sprawled out on the floor with his feet still on the bench. Hermione offered him a hand up and they went on eating lunch. When they settled back in, she didn't back away from Theo, and as Regulus noticed, Theo didn't seem to mind too terribly much. He thought maybe there was something between them. After lunch, the Marauders went to grab Remus and head off to "work on something" which Hermione figured was the map.
Once they were gone, Theo and Hermione decided to head towards their common room for their free period. Regulus was packing up his stuff and heading down to the Slytherin common room.
"Off to potions Reg?" Theo asked.
"No, just heading to the common room."
"Well, that's silly, come with us. We have a free period."
"Really?"
Hermione hooked her arm in Regulus' and started to head towards their room. "Yes really. I don't often say things I don't mean."
When they got to the room, Regulus started to laugh. "Okay Theo, you were right. This is an interesting layout."
Hermione rolled her eyes and spread out her books on the coffee table, working on the transfiguration homework they had. Regulus and Theo sat on the loveseat behind her and took out books. After half an hour, Hermione stretched and then leaned back into the space between the two boys. Regulus noticed that she didn't seem to mind being close to either one of them. Maybe he was wrong at lunch... this would require more observation.
Chapter 25: Learning to get along
Notes:
This chapter has a few time jumps, hopefully, it's not *too* confusing. We don't want to stay in their 4th year forever...
Ever since they had shared that small kiss, Sev and Lily had taken every chance they could to sneak off without being seen.
That's how they ended up in a broom closet, making out when the door opened to reveal a very shocked Remus and a very... Luna-y Luna. Nothing seemed to phase that girl.
"Oh sorry. We didn't know you'd be in here. We should find somewhere else" She led a stuttering Remus away and into a nearby alcove.
"oh my Merlin. that was so mortifying"
Severus tensed next to her "why?"
"I want to be a prefect next year and here I am getting caught in the broom closet with my boyfriend!"
"B-boyfriend?"
"Well, I mean. We're going to Hogsmeade next weekend so, I thought..."
Severus answered her with a kiss.
"I thought you were worried about being caught with me not just being caught"
"Oh Sev."
Theo had stopped ignoring Draco after a few days of cooling down, but in those few days, Theo and Hermione had gotten closer. With Theo getting along with Hermione and Severus dating Lily, the Slytherin common room was avoiding the word "mudblood." Draco, unfortunately for him, hadn't gotten over some of the prejudices he was raised with.
"Theo, you have no time for me anymore! You're always with the mudblood."
Severus flicked his wand and sent a stinging hex at Draco.
"OW! Fuck! What was that for?"
"In case you forgot, I'm dating a muggleborn"
"It's kind of hard to forget. You're basically attached at the lips."
"Then it should be easy to remember not to use that word."
"Fine, whatever"
It went on like this all month. Between Hermione, Lily, the Marauders, Theo and Severus hexing him, and Luna spouting weird nonsense about how they can't fix the future unless they work together, Draco had gotten better about it. He was still a prat though.
"So Granger. How are you doing on the Runes work?"
"If I have to call you Theo, call me Hermione."
"But Granger is easier."
"So is Nott."
"She has a point."
"Shut it Reg."
"Come on. She calls us Reg and Theo."
"Fine."
Draco walked in and flopped down next to Hermione. "Hi Granger, Theo, Reggie."
"Malfoy."
"How come he gets to call you Granger?"
"Because it took me over a year and a half and a punch to sort of get him to stop calling me mudblood. It's not worth the battle."
"And you went through time and got a ton of backup"
"Exactly. So, with him, I gave up. You on the other hand..."
Theo threw one of the Hufflepuff pillows at her.
Regulus and Hermione were sitting in the corner of the library reading when Sirius walked up. "Where do you always disappear to Reggie?"
"Oh, Hermione and Theo drag me to their common room during our free periods"
"WHAT? You don't invite me too?"
Hermione looked up from her book. "Didn't think you'd want to come up. You're always muttering about some map."
"Yeah, well... It might be nice to be invited even if I can't come."
"You're like a giant toddler Sirius Black."
He flopped across their laps and gave his best innocent face.
"Get off me!" Regulus said before pushing Sirius off their laps.
"oof. Real nice little brother."
"If we invite you will you act at least a little grown up."
"I might."
"Fine."
About ten minutes later, Hermione finished her book and got up. Regulus followed right behind and grabbed her book bag. She just smiled at him and they kept walking. Sirius watched the interaction with interest. Reggie never offered to carry his friend's books, even Posy who loudly complained about how heavy her bag was. And it seemed from her reaction that this was a common occurrence.
"Well, are you going to come with or not?" Hermione called over her shoulder.
Sirius jogged to catch up.
"It looks like a storage closet threw up all over in here"
"You get used to it Sirius"
Hermione sat on the couch and leaned against Theo, reading the book he was holding. Regulus put their bags on the ground and sat on the floor between them. Hermione started to run her fingers through Regulus' hair as he read his own book. Sirius narrowed his eyes at the display. It was obvious his brother liked her, but she seemed to be with Theo.
"So this is where you spend your time?"
"Yeah. It's quieter than Slytherin and the lighting is way better."
"Okay."
Draco walked down from the boy's room and noticed Sirius. "Really, you dragged another Black in here?"
"Yup" Hermione responded without even looking up. "I'm actually thinking of dragging the entire 4th year Gryffindors in here too."
"Do that and I'm dragging the Slytherins."
"I was the first one to drag a spare snake in here, you do realize that right?"
"Shut up Granger."
She looked up and stuck her tongue out at him.
Sirius and Regulus were leaving the common room together when Sirius spoke: "Reggie, you know she's with Theo, right?"
Regulus snorted "No, she isn't."
"I watched them today. She is."
"No, she really isn't. I hang out with them all the time and I've asked."
"Well, I don't want you hurt."
Regulus looked at the floor "I don't know what you mean."
"Sure. Just... be careful... I know what I saw today."
"Okay Sirius, whatever you say."
They parted ways when they hit the stairwell, Sirius headed up to the tower and Regulus went down to the dungeons. He was thinking about all his observations since the first time Hermione dragged him to their common room. He did notice that she treated Theo differently from Draco or the Marauders. But she also treated him the same way she treated Theo.
And Theo... Theo also treated everyone but the two of them differently. He really didn't let anyone into his space normally, unless it was Regulus or Hermione. The two of them- Theo seemed to invite into his space. He wasn't exactly sure what it all meant, but he knew he liked how relaxed they were together.
Chapter 26: A kiss and an Emergency
Sirius was convinced that in order to be a better brother, he needed to make sure Reg's heart didn't get broken. They needed to finish the map so he could keep an eye on her- but Remus was too busy with Luna to research. That left Lily, Hermione, and Theo as the other bookworms who might take on a research project.
Theo, he reasoned, would immediately figure out his reason and demand a copy of the map. That wasn't a risk he was willing to take.
Lily... well she was a bit of a goody two shoes and wouldn't approve of the idea. She was definitely out of the running.
That left Hermione... the one he was planning to spy on. Awkward yes, but probably his safest bet to get the research without too many questions or stipulations. She wasn't going to be easy to convince though. He just needed a good lie, the right lie, to use to get her help with how to make the ink appear without needing to spill ink on the paper every time. That was a little too messy for trouble making.
He headed to the library. They were always there or their common room during the free period. It didn't take long to find the three of them in their little section. Hermione was at a table with books spread out around her. Across the table, Regulus and Theo were talking about the upcoming Slytherin/Ravenclaw Quidditch game.
"Hey Hermione, can I talk to you?"
"Um, sure Sirius. Reg, Theo can you watch my stuff?"
"We probably won't be back soon. I'll help you put it away"
Theo waved him off. "We got it. You don't know which books are hers. I'll bring your bag back to the common room."
Hermione smiled and thanked them, then turned and walked off with Sirius.
Remus and Luna were sitting next to the Black Lake. Luna was placing strange flowers she conjured in his hair and explaining to him how they will help him do something or other. Half the time he spent just looking at her smile and wondering how he ended up here.
"We're really lucky that the weather is still so nice."
"Why's that?"
"Well, footprints are easier to see in the snow."
"Oh, okay." He just agreed, she always said the strangest things.
"So, what do you need?"
"Oh, I uh can't figure out a spell for these parchments. I, um, I mean we want to be able to send each other notes. But when the message transfers, if there isn't enough ink on the page... it can't be read."
"Okay..."
"And we don't want to carry around parchments with ink smeared all over."
"And you want me to help you send notes to each other in class?" She asked, raising her eyebrow and putting her hands on her hips.
Sirius looked down. Obviously not the best lie to pick. "Um. yes? I mean, we can make your lot a set too!"
She huffed out a breath and pinched the bridge of her nose "fine, but if you get caught I did not have any part in this."
She wasn't about to let on that she figured this was really about the map. Plus she really was curious to know who her lot was exactly. She already had a good idea on what charm would work... but with the other layers of charms on the map, it might interfere. She had started to think over everything Harry had shown her about the map when she got hit with a body bind.
She saw Sirius being thrown away from her right before her head hit the floor and everything went black.
"Theo, do you think he likes her?"
"I don't think so Reg. Even if he did, she's not into him."
"How do you know that?"
"She has a type. He is definitely not it."
"Oh."
"We are."
Regulus looked him over. Overall Theo looked more similar to him than Sirius did. If he grew out his hair... Not to mention their personalities. Sirius was headstrong and foolish at the best of times... But Theo was an observer like he was.
"Oh. So you like her." It wasn't a question. He already knew the answer from watching their interactions.
"You do too."
"I-"
"No."
"No?" This might require more observation, he was sure Theo liked her and was going for her.
"No. Don't try to explain it or back down. It makes things easier."
"Easier how?"
Theo leaned over and kissed Regulus. He had his hand on Regulus' cheek as he gently pressed their lips together. He didn't make any move to take the kiss further, just a simple little kiss. Regulus was frozen for the first few seconds but then realized it didn't feel horrible and added a little pressure himself.
"Figure it out," Theo said when they broke apart, before hopping off the bench, grabbing his and Hermione's bags and walking out of the library.
Yup, this was going to require a lot more observation.
When Hermione came to, she was in a large room on the softest chair she had ever sat it and a massive headache.
"I did tell them you weren't to be harmed, Miss Granger, I apologize for that. They have... learned their lesson."
"Where am I?"
"That doesn't matter. Can I have a mediwitch look you over now that you are awake? She's just down the hall."
She narrowed her eyes at the strange man. He looked familiar, but she couldn't place him. "Why do you care?"
"As I said, Miss Granger, I had told everyone none of you are to be harmed, but my followers had a bit of trouble understanding that bit."
Suddenly she remembered how she ended up blacked out "Oh Merlin, Sirius. Is he okay?"
"I was told the Black Heir was taken to the infirmary immediately and should be fine."
"Why am I here?"
"I was told you were intelligent Miss Granger. You're here to help me."
She paused for a minute trying to sort through what happened "Voldemort."
"Ah, there you are. I was beginning to worry Rosier had messed with your mind."
"I will never help you."
"It seems, Miss Granger, that you have no other choice."
Chapter 27: Unconsciousness and Anger
Sirius was in the infirmary the next morning, he still hadn't regained consciousness. No one knew Hermione was missing yet. Theo had brought her bag back up to the common room and then headed to dinner. He didn't see Sirius or Hermione so he didn't think anything of them still being missing. Regulus was too busy analyzing the kiss and what that all had to do with Hermione to notice anyone around him.
By the end of breakfast, James and Remus were worried. It wasn't unusual for Sirius to be out all night doing random things, but he never missed food. Especially not two meals in a row. The last thing they remembered was Sirius heading off to talk to Hermione. Maybe she'll know.
They tried to find her at the table then headed over to the Slytherin table.
"Oi, Nott, Mini Malfoy. You seen Hermione this morning?"
"No, can't say I've seen Granger but I'm not her keeper."
"Not since Sirius grabbed her from the library yesterday. If I see her, I'll let her know you're looking for her. Why exactly are you looking for her?"
"We haven't seen Sirius since he took off to find her, we were hoping she had an idea where he was."
"So he didn't come back to your room last night?"
"No."
"And that wasn't suspicious?"
Regulus snorted "You have met my brother, right?"
"Still, maybe Luna saw her this morning."
The five boys headed over to the Ravenclaw table, Luna was sitting with a book upside down in front of her, writing notes on a parchment next to her.
"Looney-" Draco started but was cut off by an elbow to the side from James and Theo.
"Hi Luna, have you seen Hermione or Sirius lately?"
"Sirius is likely still with Madame Pomphrey. He was being levitated there yesterday before dinner."
"And Hermione?"
"No."
"No?"
"No, I have not seen her lately." She said slowly.
They took off to the infirmary with Luna following behind.
"Miss Granger, it does you no good to starve yourself."
"I'm not eating anything you give me."
"Well, that is unfortunate. Perhaps another person here would be preferred?"
"Not bloody likely."
"You are only making this more difficult on yourself Miss Granger."
She just glared at the wall to the left of him. There was something incredibly unsettling about the man. He was supposed to be older than her father, but he looked twenty-five. She knew wizards aged slower than muggles, but this was a bit extreme.
He sighed "Miss Granger. I went through much trouble getting you here. I will not let you do anything to harm yourself while in my care."
She snorted but didn't say anything.
"I should have had them take the Ravenclaw. Gryffindors are too stubborn for their own good."
At this, she snapped her glare to him. "You will leave her alone."
"I will... if you help me."
He was amused by the conflicting emotions he saw on her face. She would be fun to break.
"He's fucking knocked out. Great."
"Theo, you need to relax," Regulus said and placed a hand on Theo's shoulder. Draco looked at them and narrowed his eyes.
Madame Pomphrey walked up "I see someone finally notified you. Those boys said they'd get you right away."
"What boys?"
"The ones who dropped him off. First year Ravenclaws. The poor dears looked scared to death."
"When was he dropped off?" James asked.
"A little before dinner."
Theo growled and turned to Regulus "She's been gone for over twelve hours, do I still need to relax?"
Regulus looked between Theo and Sirius "It would be helpful if you did, but until he wakes up I think anger is all we have."
Draco walked over and poked Sirius, then shook him a little. James was on the other side of the bed trying to talk Sirius awake. "Mate, she's gone and you're the clue to why and where."
Luna placed a hand on his leg "He'll wake when he wakes. I think we should find the boys who dropped him off."
They went to Dumbledore and explained the situation to him. He looked alarmed but quickly summoned Flitwick to his office. It wasn't long before the first years were standing in the headmaster's office, looking like they were about to cry.
"Hello, do you know why you're here?"
"N-n-n-no sir." The one in the middle responded after his two friends pushed him forward.
"Yesterday you brought a young Gryffindor to the infirmary."
"We didn't do anything! We found him like that!"
Regulus let out a whine at that. Someone left his brother in the hallway unconscious...
"We didn't think you had. We're just hoping you can give some more information."
"His head... There was blood. and, and the wall too."
James and Remus looked at each other.
"Can you show us?"
The group headed down to the corridor and found the blood still on the wall. His book bag had been tossed into a nearby alcove, when they picked it up a wand fell out.
"This is not Sirius' wand. His wand is not made of vine."
"No, that looks like Hermione's wand."
"Are you sure Draco?"
He looked at Theo. "No, I've only had it pointed at me more than a dozen times."
"Sarcasm is not helping."
"Yes, I'm sure."
"Fuck," Theo said, running his hand through his hair. She would never willingly leave her wand.
"Miss Granger, my Lord has asked me to check on you."
She looked up at the woman, she was the same mediwitch that had looked her over the day before.
"I really need you to eat or take this," she said, holding up a vial with a beautiful blue potion with a syrup-like consistency that Hermione determined to be Vitamix Potion.
She tilted her head and looked the woman over again. She was shorter than Professor McGonagall but a bit wider. There was no chance Hermione could overpower this woman. But that didn't mean she had to make the process easy.
"No."
Chapter 28: Anger, Admissions and The Young Order
Voldemort was waiting in her room when she stepped out of the bathroom.
When she spotted him, she jumped back and screeched "What are you doing in here?"
"I'm checking on my guest. It seems she wasn't very nice to the Mediwitch this afternoon and still refused to eat."
She sat on the bed and hugged one of the pillows.
"Ignoring me won't help Miss Granger."
She muttered out "It makes me feel better."
"You know I have no desire to harm you. I just want your help."
"You know I have no desire to help you. I just want to go" she said, mimicking his tone.
"Watch it little one. I might not want to hurt you but that doesn't mean I won't if you make me."
"I will never help you no matter how much pain I am in."
He stood up and walked to the side of the bed and reached out his hand, brushing her cheek with his knuckles.
"Oh, Pet, there are so many ways to make someone bend to your will."
Theo was pacing in the empty classroom Regulus and Draco had dragged him in to.
"Theo, mate."
"No Draco. Don't."
"Don't what?"
"I finally don't have to worry about Thalen and his influence. Don't you start."
"You do then."
"Of fucking course I do Draco."
"Well, that'll be a fun talk with Grandpa Brax."
"You literally only know half of it Draco."
Draco looked at Theo, who had stopped pacing and was staring right at Regulus.
"Oh, you have got to be fucking kidding me."
The Marauders had settled in a different room with Luna. They were all silent for a while until Sirius got frustrated trying to open his bag and threw it against a wall.
"And you wonder why your things don't last long," Peter said, not even looking up from his homework
Sirius looked at the bag on the floor and shrugged "No, I really don't"
"We're all worried too," Remus said.
"You weren't there though. No one can blame you."
"Sirius, no one blames you," James added.
"YOU DON'T KNOW THAT!" Sirius yelled before punching the wall
Luna walked over and waved her wand over the cuts on his knuckles "This would have happened no matter who was with her."
"What?"
"They told me."
"Who?"
"The Fates."
"And you didn't think we might need to know that?"
"No. Some things need to happen."
Hermione had been sitting on the bed, holding the pillow for hours, too numb to move. She just kept replaying the last few moments before she was brought here in her head. Sirius had been unconscious before she was. If people already knew, she would be lucky, but with her not even knowing where she was, it might not help anyway.
She heard a knock on the door then it opened. This time a boy stepped through. He seemed to be a little older than her but would still be in Hogwarts or recently graduated.
"Hello."
"Who are you?"
"Right to the point I see. My name is Evan Rosier."
"So you're the idiot who gave me this headache."
"No, that would be my brother Marius. He's not going to be here at all, don't worry."
"So why are you here? I'm not going to eat for you either."
"My Lord thought you might appreciate someone closer to your own age to talk to."
"Well, I don't. I want to go."
"He's not going to let that happen." he said as he sat at the foot of the bed.
"I can hope."
"It really won't do you much good."
"So I've been told."
They sat in silence for a bit.
"So tell me what to expect."
He chuckled, "My Lord was right, you are a Gryffindor to the bones."
She rolled her eyes.
"I don't think you want to know what will happen if you don't start to cooperate, at least a little."
"No, I really do want to know."
"Fine. He'll find your weaknesses and talk to you about it. A lot. If that fails he will slowly drag out every second of ripping you to pieces. He doesn't seem to care how he does it... Emotionally, Mentally, Physically... Torture is something he just enjoys."
"And you still follow him?"
"I find it's best to not annoy him... So yes, I still follow."
She looked at the pillow in her lap.
"And what does he do when you annoy him?"
"My brother. He may be an idiot, but he's still my brother, you know?"
"Only child."
"Then he'll find a different one for you," he said, looking at the wall, not wanting to say it was fairly obvious what exactly the Dark Lord was planning when it came to this girl. With no way to get her friends, the desire to keep her mind in tact, and her earlier proclamation about pain...
"Did the fates tell you where she is?"
"No, that's not how they work."
"Then how do they work, you obnoxious twit?"
"Sirius, back off."
"No. She knows something and isn't telling anyone."
"I can't tell you."
"See James?"
"Not yet at least. Soon, when we have her back."
"Is that when a hopeful or one of those things you just bloody know?"
"I know."
Sirius stormed off. He knew that his brother would never forgive him if anything happened to Hermione because of him. It didn't matter what anyone else said, he didn't hear the people approaching and he didn't even get a good look before they knocked him into the wall. The next thing he knew it was almost a full day later and there were no answers. Just a missing girl and his memories that offered no clues.
Dumbledore was meeting with a few of the newer Order members, ones he pulled in for their access to the school.
"Now, you know what you have to do?"
"Yes sir, we"
"definitely understand."
"I don't want anyone coming close to the other three. They need to be safe."
"What about Hermione?"
"Well, when we find her, you will all be part of the rescue team"
The three boys and two girls smiled.
Chapter 29
End Notes:
No, Hermione wasn't making some big plot. She was a scared 15 year old who could only think that anything but the tap water was dosed with Veritaserum. She literally just wanted to survive.
"Miss Granger."
"Voldemort."
"Tell me how I died in the future."
"No."
He sat next to her on the bed. She scooted away.
"All you need to do is help me live and you'll be rewarded" He reached out and stroked her cheek.
She backed away again "I want you to die."
"Oh little one, you're going to be so much fun to break"
"I won't break."
He leaned in, following her until she was backed against the head board. With his lips almost touching hers, he whispered: "You may have strength, but I know your weakness." Then he kissed her cheek and left her crying in the room.
"Gideon, Fabian, why have you been following my girlfriend the past couple days?"
"It's a-"
"-secret, Remmie"
"That is the worst nickname I have ever heard."
"Relax, they are just here to protect me."
"Why do you need protecting though?"
"Remus, Hermione was taken from the school."
"And I suppose the boys are being protected too?"
"We are not-"
"-allowed to say."
"Fantastic. Fine then, follow on."
Sirius walked up with his hands in his pockets looking at the ground. "Hey Reggie, can I, uh, talk with you?"
Regulus looked at him and nodded.
Sirius looked over at Theo "um, can we talk alone? brother to brother?"
Regulus nodded to Theo and he got up and left.
"What do you want Siri?"
"I'm sorry Reggie, I should have protected her."
"Yeah, you should have."
Sirius' shoulders dropped at that, he just knew his brother blamed him. He turned and started to walk away and Regulus stopped him.
"I- I'm sorry, I am just worried. None of us could have seen that coming."
Theo burst back into the room "They found her. They found her! We need to get to Dumbledore's office!"
The three boys ran as fast as they could to his office. Gideon and Fabian had already brought Luna and Remus there. It was only a few more minutes before the office was full.
Dumbledore cleared his throat and they all stopped talking. "Okay, we have found Miss Granger."
"I need to go with!" Sirius shouted. The rest of the group agreed.
"I can not allow that."
"I'll go whether you let me or not."
"I thought you might say that. Minerva, if you will."
McGonagall escorted out the majority of the students and brought them to a classroom that she then warded shut.
James was the first to react "You locked us in!"
Sirius was next "I thought you were bringing us to help!"
McGonagall responded "No, you are far too young to go against full grown Dark Wizards. We could not allow fourth years to join the fighting."
Regulus started to swear in French. McGonagall raised her eyebrows but allowed him to continue.
Remus looked around. "I'm guessing the seventh years were taken on the rescue mission?"
Her lips drew tight and she didn't answer, though Luna seemed to take that task herself. "Everyone who is meant to go has already left"
Theo walked over to Regulus and hugged him, leaning against a desk and letting Regulus swear into his shoulder. He placed a gentle kiss on Regulus' temple and listened to the younger boy vent all his frustration at the situation.
Hermione was sitting on the bed. She had counted twelve attempts to make her eat since she had gotten there. Four days. She had denied everything but water from the sink so far, figuring that was the hardest to mess with. As the time went on, Voldemort had gotten more and more affectionate. It was disgusting and creepy. Though, thinking back to what Rosier had said... She figured that was the point.
The door opened and he walked in carrying her lunch.
"Hello, little one."
She didn't respond except to glare.
"Now, now. the niceties must be observed."
"You kidnapped me, how exactly is that a nicety?"
Voldemort chuckled. It was a disturbing sound, unnatural and unnerving. "Oh, little one. You are a treat. But beware, my patience does have its limits. You will tell me what I want to know soon enough"
She snorted "I really doubt that."
Voldemort had her pinned against the wall before she could blink. "I think we're finding the edges of my patience little one."
He turned his head to the side and grinned. "It looks like some of your little friends have come to try and rescue you. Shall we see who makes it through the wards, little one?"
Her heart started to pound against her chest, they found her. She couldn't hear anything yet, but the hope was there. She wondered who Dumbledore had brought with to help him. Voldemort didn't back off, even with the intruders. He was still holding her against the wall, far too close for her comfort. She could hear shouts in the distance, he was just laughing as the sounds got closer. She could hear them running down the hall closer to her door, shouting for her.
"I'm here," she screamed out, then he spun her around and pinned her face down on the bed. He grabbed her hair and pulled her head up, faced towards the door, still pinned against him. Just as the door was flying open, he laughed and licked her cheek then dropped her and apparated away.
"See? We told you-"
"-We're honored-"
"-to rescue-"
"-a damsel-"
"-in distress."
She let out a choked sob and collapsed onto the floor. Gideon and Fabian rushed around the bed and picked her up off the floor.
Sirius was pacing, Regulus and Theo were still hugging, Draco was arguing with Luna about how he didn't need to clear the wrackspurts, thank you very much. James, Peter, and Remus had taken to tossing a crumpled up parchment between them. Minerva was watching the teens and randomly transfiguring the cup in front of her into different objects to pass the time after grading all her papers.
Suddenly she felt her wards crumbling down, she looked at each of the students. None of them had their wands out, so it must be coming from outside. She rushed to the door and drew her wand. It was probably Dumbledore, but with this timing, it was wiser to be cautious.
When the door opened, everyone turned to see Hermione standing between the Prewett twins. They each had an arm around her, holding her up.
Chapter 30: Sirius and Peter
Theo was too shocked to move. Regulus rushed forward and hugged Hermione, knocking her over in the process. Her groan snapped Theo out of his shock and he raced to them and dropped to his knees, helping Hermione to sit up. He held her face in his hands, looking her over for injury.
"Theo, I'm fine."
He kept looking her over despite her reassurance, Regulus wasn't much better.
"Theo, Reg!" she said, a little louder this time.
"We were worried."
"Me too."
As they sat on the floor hugging, the rest of the group was standing around waiting to say hi.
McGonagall cleared her throat to bring her attention to everyone else.
Peter stepped forward to help her up.
"Thanks, Pete. I'm still a little weak."
"We'll fix you right up, don't worry."
"LITTLE BEAR!" James shouted as he took her into his arms and spun around.
"Dizzy, James. I'm getting dizzy."
"Oh right. Don't you ever do that to us again."
"I'll try not to." She said laughing.
One by one everyone came and gave her hugs, and was subsequently dismissed by the Professors. Theo and Regulus put up a fight but McGonagall and Slughorn had both reminded them that she would be going to the infirmary wing anyways. She hadn't let Peter go the whole time as he helped her go from person to person without getting too dizzy and falling over. Finally, only Sirius was left in the room, looking down at his feet.
"Okay, one more to go, then you can help me to the infirmary."
He walked her over by Sirius and he flinched.
"Sirius, I am so happy you're okay!" She said before hugging him.
She noticed he was shaking. "Sirius, you are okay, right?"
He nodded.
"Sirius look at me."
When he looked up, there were tears in his eyes.
"What's wrong?"
"I don't want you to hate me too."
"Who hates you?"
"They all do but no one will admit it. Especially Reggie."
"You couldn't have stopped it, Sirius."
"I was too busy worrying about stupid pranks. I wasn't paying attention."
"Neither was I. How is your head?"
"I was knocked out for a while. It's fine now."
She hugged him tighter and this time he returned the hug, crying into her shoulder.
Peter was helping her up the first set of stairs to the infirmary when she yawned. He stopped and turned his back to her on the landing. "Hop on!"
"What?"
"We'll never make it at this rate, so I'm going to give you a dragon-back ride."
She blinked a few times trying to sort what he just said, failing completely, "A what?"
"A dragon-back ride. Where you carry your friend on your back."
"Oh, oh! you don't have to do that!"
"It's easier than holding you another way and you're exhausted. Just hop on."
She hopped on his back and rested her head on his shoulder as he climbed the staircase to the infirmary. She was almost asleep by the time they got there.
"Mister Pettigrew what are you doing here?"
"I was told to bring Hermione for a checkup."
Hermione lifted her head and with a big yawn said "Hello."
"Oh Miss Granger, we've been so worried about you! Lay her down over there Mister Pettigrew." She motioned to one of the beds.
He put her down and went to walk away when he hand shot out and grabbed him. "Please, don't go."
"Okay, I can stay until she kicks me out."
"No, don't let her."
"What's wrong?" Peter asked with a frown.
"I... I don't want to be alone, I was so alone there except when he visited or sent someone in. I can't be alone."
"Okay, are you hungry or anything?"
"Yeah."
"Then I'll go get us food from the kitchens while she checks you over."
"Promise you'll come back?"
"Of course." Peter almost ran all the way to the kitchens
"Miss Granger can you describe what happened the past few days?"
Hermione went over the kidnapping, how a mediwitch had seen her and how she had refused food, by the end, she was crying.
"Okay, can you lay down and I'll do a scan."
She laid back and waited for the mediwitch to finish working on her. Peter came running back in, out of breath with Nod behind him. He sat in the chair so she could see he was back, just in case the racket he caused hadn't been enough to alert her. She smiled at him and he offered a goofy smile back.
"Okay, we'll need to get you some good meals and you'll be just fine."
"Thank you."
"Mister Pettigrew you may stay for another few minutes then she'll need to sleep."
"Please don't make him leave."
"Miss Granger-"
"Please, I can't be alone. You can knock me out, just don't make me be alone."
The wand hovering above Hermione started to vibrate, and her eyes went wide. "Miss Granger, please calm down. This stress is not good for you."
Nod tugged on Peter's pant leg until he looked down.
"I needs to be up there, but I needs helps."
He blinked a few times then went to grab her under the arms like a toddler, then hesitated and went to grab her hands and hesitated again. After a few different attempts at picking a spot to hold the elf she sighed and pulled his hands down and sat on them then lifted her chin as a final command. He carefully placed her on the bed next to Hermione. Nod laid her hand on Hermione's forehead and sang a song, it helped to calm her almost immediately.
"How did you do that?" Peter asked.
"I's was a nanny elf before. My young Master loved that song, he did."
Peter gave her a small smile and helped her back down, allowing her to sit on his forearm this time, offering his other arm for her to hold to stay steady.
"Thanks you. Ifs you need anything else, you call Nod. No needs to be running to the kitchen."
Peter and Hermione ate the food she had brought them and before long Hermione fell asleep. Peter climbed onto the next bed over and made himself comfortable. He promised to stay and he would keep his word.
Chapter 31: Sirius has an idea...
Peter woke up halfway through the night to Hermione crying. He sat on the bed next to her and shook until she woke up.
"Hey, Hermione, wake up, what's wrong?"
She sat up and grabbed her pillow before looking around and spotting Peter and throwing her arms around him saying, "I thought I was there. I thought he was waking me up."
"No, just me." he said, awkwardly patting her back.
They stayed up for an hour talking before both started to yawn. They both fell asleep facing each other, Hermione had been mid sentence when she noticed Peter fell asleep, and after a couple of minutes she joined him.
The next few weeks were mostly the same- Peter, Theo, and Regulus made sure Hermione was never alone. During those weeks, they had all gotten close. Theo and Regulus knew that nothing was going on between her and Peter, even if he had taken to crashing in her room fairly often while Luna hunted Wrangle-flibits or whatever she had invented that week.
Sirius, on the other hand... thought his friend was messing with his brother's crush. And that, he had decided, was unacceptable and would end now. He had it all set up by the time the rest of their group got to potions. it was simple enough to talk Slughorn into letting him in early, saying he needed to get some extra work in on their current potion, and since the spare lab hours were about to start, Slughorn let him right in the lab.
Not many people knew that Sirius was good at potions, mostly because he was a slacker, but they were about to find out. He had set up a little explosion that would scare their resident damsel in distress right into the arms of his little brother once he shot a gentle heating charm to the cauldron. He knew that Theo had been coming in to help Reg catch up on potions and that Hermione usually joined to help Peter out.
He took his seat and watched as the four of them walked in- his brother carrying her bag while she laughed from her spot between Theo and Peter. The first part of his plan was to get Peter and Hermione across the table from him, with Theo and Regulus at the table right behind them. Peter would be too busy checking himself to help Hermione, leaving Regulus to scoop her up and win her over.
All in all, Sirius thought, this is a perfect plan.
"Hey, Hermione, I have a question."
Hermione went from talking with Regulus and Theo to leaning over the table to talk to Sirius as he pointed to an instruction in his book. She gently explained the difference between slicing and chopping the roots. As soon as she turned back to her cauldron, he sent the heating charm at his and ducked. The explosion was a great deal larger than he expected.
She was just supposed to be scared, not bleeding.
Oh, Merlin, she was bleeding.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this to-"
"Sirius Black... What exactly did you just say?" Hermione asked while helping Peter off the ground.
"I, um, might have meant for a little something to happen."
Still holding Peter's hand, she levelled her wand at Sirius. "What in Godric's name would have possessed you to do something this stupid?"
"I wanted to help Reg."
She looked back at the younger Black, he seemed just as confused how the extra practice time being disrupted would help.
"Help how exactly?"
"Well, I thought if you were scared, he could comfort you. It worked for Peter."
She looked at Peter who had an equal look of objection on his face. That comment made her realize she never let go of his hand and dropped it.
"So, let me get this straight... You thought that Peter and I were together?"
"Yes," Sirius said, still fully convinced it was the truth.
She snorted, "No, and no offence but ew. He's like my brother."
"None taken, I agree. Definitely a sister."
"Oh."
"Yeah, oh. Now on top of that... thinking we were dating- you decided to get it in your head to break us up?"
"Well when you put it that way-"
"Oh, no Mr Black, I am not done. And it sounded exactly as bad as it was."
Sirius put his head down.
"Now, you thought the best way to break us up was to injure us both and then what?"
"One- you weren't supposed to be injured, just scared."
She held out her arms, which currently looked like she got into a fight with a stack of parchment, little drops of blood from tiny little cuts all over "Great execution there."
"And two, you were supposed to jump back into Reggie and he would calm you."
"Can you tell me, looking back, exactly how utterly ridiculous that entire plan was?"
Sirius looked down as Hermione dragged Peter out the door to get the small cuts healed. There were too many to deal with in her current state of anger.
"Why the fuck would you think that was a good idea?"
"Reggie- I just want you happy."
"And I was. This-" he motioned to the space where the four were previously standing, "is perfect. This makes me happy."
"I just thought he was stealing her."
"You thought the same about Theo!"
"Well, he was at least on the right track with that one," Theo said before tossing an arm around Regulus' shoulder.
"Theo, I really don't need your input right now."
"Whatever you say Reg," he muttered into his ear.
"But really Sirius, you need to run your thoughts by me if it involves any of us. Please don't piss her off anymore."
Sirius nodded and started to clean up the mess as Theo guided Regulus out of the room.
"Of all the bull headed things I have ever seen-"
"Hermione, calm down."
"He actually thought you and I-"
He sighed, "I know."
"And he thought he would just, what? Break up a relationship he imagined?"
"Hermione, let's keep going to the infirmary."
"No, I need to-"
"No, you don't. Not yet at least. Revenge can wait."
"Fine. Be the calm one"
He laughed and they walked off to the infirmary.
Chapter 32: Recovery
It had taken a week for Hermione and Peter to come up with a prank they felt would truly convey their displeasure with Sirius. On the plus side, they had created a rather long list of pranks that would be shared with the Marauders after the revenge on Sirius. But for now, they were just trying to avoid his persistent apologies.
"Can I carry your books to class?"
"No."
"Please, just... I'm trying to be a good brother."
"And carrying my books wouldn't send the wrong message?"
"Oh, it would... unless you're injured," Theo piped in.
"I don't need your input, Nott."
"I think you do. All you've managed to do is upset her more."
"That's because none of her watchdogs will give me a chance to make it right."
"That's because I told them not to. And they actually listened."
"I listen!"
Hermione turned around and cocked her eyebrow, "then why are you still hovering?"
Sirius deflated and walked away.
"You know, he's not going to stop."
"It's almost ready. Once we're done, he can try to apologize again."
"You really think he will?"
"If he's smart he will."
Theo doubted that he was that smart, considering he had already been through three pranks from Hermione since Theo had been around. He was told that there was another one before he arrived that involved a decorative snake. He would have paid good money to see that one.
"Remus, she won't talk to me."
"Can you blame her?"
"Well, I just-"
"No, I'm sorry Sirius, but you have to think things through."
"I know."
"And when she does get you back for this, don't retaliate."
"You think she will?"
"I don't think, I know."
It took a great deal of work, but Hermione had finally set up the incantation for the map. Theo had humoured her when she gave the worst possible excuse for why she needed a parchment that could pull ink from the air.
"I think if we modify the aguamenti spell it will work best."
"How so?"
"Well... That spell pulls moisture from the air and perhaps if we can change it to grab some dust too it might just work. I mean, most places in this castle have some form of dust around."
"We'd have to be careful what word we used. Dust might be too broad."
"Yeah, but Earth would be too specific and might call on too much magic."
"Maybe impurity?"
"Too subjective. Think about what Draco called you the past couple years."
"Right. We should test a few words with a jar. That way the mistakes stay small."
"That could work. Lacarnum Inflamari is contained when you cast it at a jar. Otherwise, it spreads."
"I know," she said laughing, remembering her first year.
"What?"
"I used that on Professor Snape's cloak first year."
"You... you set Profesor's robes on fire?"
"Yeah, it was when Harry's broom was acting up."
"And he didn't kill you?"
"I'm fairly sure he didn't know it was me."
They spent the next few hours filling jars with varying degrees of success.
Dust had caused a storm within the room that left them both coughing.
Powder has caused the nearby quill to disintegrate and float into a jar.
A reversed scorgify was too gross to even describe. As Hermione was recovering from the stomach turning jar that Theo was disposing of, Regulus had joined them in the common room, wedging himself behind Hermione on the couch and wrapping his arm around her waist.
"So what are we doing?"
"Hermione says we're trying to create a spell for neatly passing notes without moving papers from one side of the room to the other, or even from different classrooms."
"So, enchanted parchment for two way notes?"
"Or more than two way... so she says."
"Oi, do you not trust me, Theo?"
"No, because you suck at lying."
"Then why are you helping?"
"One, I'm fucking bored. Two, this was an interesting question. Three, I've seen the prank list you and Peter compiled and I would very much like to not sing every time I talked, have every quill turn back into the bird it came from or have everything I bring near my mouth turn into a random flavour mush."
She smirked.
"You are scary sometimes, you know that?" Regulus asked while kissing her cheek.
"I'm aware. But as long as you don't piss me off, I won't have a reason to prank you."
"Hence the helping," Theo said tipping the now clean jar. "Now, let's find a way to fill this with something without causing a storm."
"Have you tried lutum?"
Hermione narrowed her eyes and tipped her head to the side, "clay... I think... that might work."
She pointed her wand at the jar and murmured "lutum aguamenti"
Unfortunately for Theo, she missed the jar when the stream powered out of her wand. He was covered in a red slick clay from his head to the puddle by his feet. The jar was completely empty and remarkably clean.
Regulus leaned closer to her ear as she was trying to not laugh and said loudly enough for Theo to hear "Perhaps if we put the water spell first it won't cause such a mess."
She lost it and dissolved into a fit of giggles as the red-clay mud dripped off Theo. Before she could react, Theo had flung clay at her and Regulus. That only served to make her laugh louder so Theo walked over and leaned over the couple on the couch.
"What's so funny Miss Granger?"
She squeaked a little before trying to answer "nothing."
"Because, if I'm not mistaken, I think you're laughing at me, Miss Granger."
She was holding her breath as his face got closer.
"I'm not a huge fan of people laughing at me."
He was barely an inch away and she could feel his breath on her cheek as Regulus slowly rubbed his hand on her side, keeping her pulled firmly against him, preventing her from moving. He had placed his hand on the side of her neck, covering it in the mud.
"I think I will have to change that, don't you agree?"
Theo's eyes flicked to Regulus who was watching them closely. As soon as she nodded he leaned in and kissed her, only taking his eyes off Regulus at the last moment when his lips met hers and his eyes fell shut.
It was a gentle but very messy kiss. After he pulled back, she looked up at the ceiling and rested her head on Regulus' shoulder. Even knowing they were planning this didn't make the reality of it any easier to comprehend. They had made it clear that they were only waiting for her to recover.
Apparently, she was recovered.
She was definitely recovered.
