A Mother’s Story

Mara gently held the small infant in her arms. Her infant. Her partly human infant. The child she just broke the second rule of her species for. Her having her in the first place broke the first one. They had let her slide before but Mara knows she’s not going to be able to get herself out of this. She hopes that she will someday understand why she has to do this.

There’s no doubt that she doesn’t have much time. She didn’t have time to search for Fumio. Coward ran after Tsukiko’s abilities from her side manifested. Granted this was after he got some of his skin rotted off his arms by holding her. Still she told him that this could happen if they had a child. Humans have always confused her. All the more reason her daughter needs to be among humans. Mara will never be able to fully understand her human half. That’s what Fumio was supposed to be for. She gently rocked Tsukiko as she was still fussy after the procedure that Mara had just performed. Mara put on a small bracelet that she had gotten premade. It had Tsukiko’s full name and birthdate on it.

Mara walked into a shadow, infant in her arms. As she walked through it she found herself at her destination. The police station. She kept her face hidden under her hood as she walked into view of any cameras. She placed the baby near the back door of the station before finding another shadow to disappear into as she watched and waited.

After a few moments she felt she was no longer alone. “Hello Michael. Guess I’m in real trouble if it’s you coming for me.” The other figure stood behind her out of view. “That’s correct. Your trial is soon.” Mara sighed. She had predicted this. She just hoped that Michael being an archangel would have enough mercy to allow her to stick around. “Can I at least have enough time to make sure she’ll be taken inside.” There is silence from behind her for a few moments. “Fine. This means you may miss the chance to defend yourself in the trial.” Mara sighs. It’s not like there’s much to defend. She was guilty of both and she didn’t regret any of it. “I know.”

Tsukiko being safe was more important than a pointless attempt at self defense. That was left unsaid between the two. “She looks just like you, you know.” Mara shook her head. “She may look like me but the eyes are the windows to the soul. She has her father’s eyes.” What was meant went unsaid. She had a human soul. Something Mara would never be able to understand. Tsukiko needed to grow up with people able to understand her human half especially now that Mara has removed her reaper half.

An officer rushes out the back door. It seems someone decided to look at the cameras and noticed her finally. Mara hears her baby cry as she’s picked up by the officer. Part of her wants to run out and take Tsukiko back but she knows she can’t. Not until her punishment is over. “I’m ready to go.” Mara says, turning back to look at Michael. “Understood.” Mara followed him with no fight knowing that she deserved whatever punishment they gave her.
