In the beginning, there was nothing.
Just, Silence.
Darkness
And then
Light
Dazzling and blinding light.
and the sound of a crying baby.
It would be many years before Noa would truly understand who and what she was. There was one thing she definitely knew, however. She would take him in the end. Normally, he couldn't see her. But when night fell, she crept into his dreams and kept him company. She could not take physical form, could not save him when his uncle locked him in that closet, could not do anything but cry and flinch, knowing that vile excuse of a man wouldn't kill Harry, but would still scar him. It went on and on, until one day, as she was talking to herself, something peculiar happened. Something that hadn't happened before. She was being…called.
She felt as if her soul was being ripped apart, but she managed to answer that call. Noa nodded once to the swirling portal in front of her, and entered.
At once she was suspend. There was nothing around her, just dark. A voice spoke.
“Little Reaper,” It said. “Might I interest you in a bargain?”
Noa was unsure.
“Listen little one. I know of the fates of everything that has and will exist. Even your charge. I have a deal for you.”
Her eyes were challenging.
“I have nothing to benefit from this, and you have everything to gain. He's in grave danger. And you know what happens to those who fail their duties, don't you?” It asked.
Noa shook her head.
“It's said that those who fail to protect their charge are, for lack of better terms, brutally ripped apart, their souls left to suffer for all eternity. That's why you need me.”
Silence
“Ah yes, I forgot. As a show of my good intentions, I shall gift you speech.”
“I thank you for your generous gift, but I do not understand. If you have nothing to gain, why help me?” Noa asked.
It ignored her question. “Dear Reaper, I shall assist you and help thrust your soul into a human shell on one condition.”
Noa scoffed,” What makes you think I would ever agree to that?”
She felt It smile in response.
Noa sighed. “Alright, state your condition.”
She felt Its grin grow wider. “When you have successfully prevented his death, you return to me. I get your soul.”
She weighed her options. Let him (maybe) die, and exist for all eternity in a painful state, or save him and turn her soul in to this thing. And suddenly, she knew exactly what to do.
