Don’t Forget Me
As I watched the rain drizzle down the car’s window, I could only imagine what was going to happen once I got to the station. I had hoped this day would never come, but when my mom accepted the job offer with the Ministry, I knew I was never going to be able to experience what she had, back in Norway. While my dad didn’t want me to go to Durmstrang, I had wanted to follow in her footsteps, even though I knew he would have hated it if I tried. He may have been my father, but he hated me for everything he had to offer.
So here I was, being driven to King’s Cross Station, on September first. Maybe it was the fact that my mom had me tutored from a young age, or maybe it was the fact that my father was an asshole, but I hadn’t had a childhood, I was 11 and had already been doing several classes that were only offered to third years and above because my mom could afford it.
“Meg bjørn, vi er her.” I hear my mom call from the front seat of the car. I look on the other side of the muggle taxi and see the train station, knowing I wouldn’t be seeing my mom until the end of the year, since she hated the idea of me wasting my studying time by coming home for holidays. Maybe I would miss her, maybe I wouldn’t.
“Mor, vær så snill snakker engelsk.” I look at her as I step out of the car, begging for her to not speak Norwegian right now. While not a part of the Soviet Union, people still believed Norwegians were communists, and I didn’t need that target on my back as a first year.
“Of course, meg bjørn, I know you’re stressed, but please remember, I just want you to feel safe.” My mother’s sing-song voice rang out.
“I know.” I hugged her as she tried to open the car trunk to grab my items.
As I let go of her waist, I reached down and grabbed my rats. While Durmstrang may not have allowed certain pets, Hogwarts allowed rats as a pet to bring to school, which made it a little better, because I knew I wouldn’t have to leave them at home and possibly be forgotten about. They scurried up my arm, Maggot first, then Atomic, with Ink pulling up the rear. My boys made me feel safe, as though I couldn’t lose my home.
“Don’t let anyone mess with your boys, many people still hate rodents, even though it is an option for a pet,” Mom sighed, “I don’t want you to lose them, I know your father got them for you.”
I nodded, feed Maggot a pumpkin seed, “We gotta hurry, I may not wanna be here, but I still will not tolerate being late.”
We both grabbed bags and started to walk towards the wall, mom grabbing my hand, and looking down at me with a small smile. We walked through the invisible doorway.
As we walked through the doorway, I was bombarded with so much noise and life that King’s Cross hadn’t had that I felt lightheaded. As I step away from the doorway, I try to notice as many families as possible. While it mainly seemed like the older students, very few looking my age, I noticed one family off by themselves, all with platinum blonde and pointed features that screamed wealth. I wanted to walk toward them, but when my mom noticed me walking toward them, she steered me in the opposite direction.
“Meg bjørn, promise me you will not talk to that boy.” Her voice sneered.
I felt a break in my voice as I spoke, “But Mom, why?”
She sighed, “Because his parents are death eaters, you may not understand that yet, as I’ve tried my hardest to keep you safe, but meg bjørn, you will find out that those people are not kind.” I saw a tear fall from her left eye as she whispered this last bit to me, “I hope that you are not put into the same dormitory as he is, I want you to be kept as far from them as you can.”
At that moment, the clock behind us chimed 10:45, fifteen minutes till we left. I see a bunch of people poor out of the train to say goodbye to their parents, and I start to see children my age. “Meg bjørn, please be safe, go and get a good spot in the train, and I’ll hold your boys until you are settled,” Mom instructed, and I followed, giving her my rats and grabbing my bags to put in the compartment above a seat. I head back out to my mom, and before I leave the train steps, I see my mom talking to the light-haired people, and she seems to be in a heated argument with the man. I walk over to her, and as I do so, I hear a bit of the argument.
“Just because his father made a deal with you when he was just a child before he was even born before we even knew that he was a boy." My mom stage whispered.
He talked in a normal tone of voice, “I do not care that he chose to make a deal with me before your child was born, but I am sticking with it.” The man stops speaking as he sees me come up behind my mom. She looks down and sees me, and I notice the fact that my mom is slightly taller than the light-haired man.
“Nico, meg bjørn, don’t sneak up on me next time.” She sighed, “These are the Malfoys. Take your rats and go get into the compartment that you found, I have to discuss more information with Mr. Malfoy.”
I take my rats and go back to the train, only to see the light-haired boy in the compartment I had put my stuff in. I go into the compartment and sit across from him, taking down a bed to put my rats into, as they are starting to fall asleep in my muggle’s clothing hood. I put them into bed and prepare myself for a long ride.
