Chapter 24
Epilogue
September 25th 1981
James still remembers it like it was yesterday. He had been sitting at home, with Sirius and Remus having just had breakfast.
None of them were aware of how their lives were about to be crushed.
Remus had turned up the radio, as he was about to do the dishes.
“Earlier this morning we were informed that another associate of the dark lord has been confirmed dead. His name was Regulus Arcturus Black. The family has informed that there will be a memorial on October 20th-”
Remus had turned it off, seeing as both James and Sirius had completely frozen. Sirius had dropped his cup of tea, but hadn't even moved.
James felt as though his heart had been ripped from his chest.
No.
He was supposed to come back. They were supposed to find each other when this was all over. He wouldn't be gone. He wasn't to james. He went through many months of denial, before visiting his grave for the first time. And even then it had felt unreal.
His Regulus. The younger brother of his best friend, who he had fallen hopelessly in love with. He had never stopped, not even for a second.
A part of him hoped that Regulus had known that, in his last moments.
He was currently crouched down beside his grave, having just laid down a bouquet of white roses.
“Why wouldn't you just let me help you…?” James sniffled, then shook his head trying his best to keep it together, as if Regulus was somehow watching him.
“I know it's been a while since i've visited, i'm sorry about that. But the reason I wanted to come today, is to tell you about Harry. You remember how hopelessly in love Lily was with Mary? They got engaged a couple of months ago, Sirius cried” he smiled to himself, thinking back to it. But before that, the two of them sat me down and asked me to help them have a child, and of course I agreed. Like I said his name is Harry, and he is the most amazing little boy. It feels weird to be a father. I guess in the back of my mind I always imagined you in that scenario as well. I tell him about you of course. He's not great with words yet, but when he gets older I'm making sure he knows who you were…” James stood up, wiping the tears off his cheeks.
“Just so you know…I would have kept my promise”

October 31st 1981
James was running down the stairs “Merlin please dont fall and break your leg” Lily said standing at the end.
“It is our son's second halloween, excuse me for caring about his costume looking absolutely flawless” he said, offended and walked past her.
“Aha!” He finally found that hat, that was missing from Harry's pirate costume.
“Quickly Lil, get the camera” he said, placing the hat on his head, just as there was a harsh knock on the front door.
“Ill get that, just take the picture” James rushed to the door. And was met with a cloaked man.
He couldn't see his face, but he felt his blood run cold. Before James could even get a word out, a flash of green hit the man in the back.
He fell to the floor with a loud thud, and James looked up.
“Regulus”
“I said I would keep my promise didn't i?”
