Chapter 1
Jamie has always taken pride working at the dragon reserve in Romania. Growing up with the Weasley’s, more specifically Charlie, paved her way for the love of dragons. She grew up hearing the stories Charlie would tell about working on the reserve. It all seemed like a fantasy. After her eighth year, she went straight to Romania to start her apprenticeship with Charlie. Four years after the fact, she’s one of the most notable dragon tamers in the wizarding world.
April 10th, 2003
“Have you heard from Mum about Easter yet?” Jamie asked while wrapping her paper work up for the day. “I swear to Merlin, if the Ridgeback eggs hatch while we are gone I'm going to be pissed.”
“She said to be at the Burrow at one and ‘Not a moment later.’” Charlie waved his finger around, mocking Molly. “She also told me a little secret.” He added while smirking over his coffee cup.
Jamie looked up from her paper and glared at Charlie with pure confusion. “Oh did she now?” She drawled out, lacing her fingers together and leaning back in her chair. “What is this brilliant secret mother told you?”
“Hmmm I don't know if I should tell you, Jame. You are the family blabbermouth.” Charlie teased which made Jamie roll her eyes and scoff. “Don't give me that. You know I'm right.” While Jamie was the Weasley’s adopted daughter, no one treated her as if she was anything different. She's just as much as a Weasley as she is a Potter. “Remember when you ruined your own surprise party?”
“Okay first off, it wasn't MY surprise birthday party, it was Harry and I’s birthday party. If anything Ron fucked it up because he told me and DID NOT MENTION that it was a surprise party. So, how the hell was I supposed to know?” Jamie dramatically crossed her arms and slumped down further into her chair. “Ron’s the family blabber mouth if you ask me..” She muttered while reaching for her cigarettes. “Come out with me?”
They walked out of the reserve office and the crisp, spring air gave Jamie goose bumps. She stuck a cigarette in her mouth and snapped her fingers to light it up. One long drag later she asks, “So are you going to tell me or am I going to have to beg?”
“Depends, are you going to go running your mouth if I tell you?” Charlie side eyed his sister as she rolled hers.
“Dear Godric,” She said as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Just tell me!” Jamie shouted as she threw her hands up in the air. As she did, she heard a very familiar dragon roar in the distance.
Charlie gave her a smug look and smirked. “Okay, okay spitfire. Calm down,” he patted her back as he took a deep breath. “Your brother is getting engaged.”
Jamie furrowed her brow and glared at Charlie. “You have to be more specific. I have seven brothers, two of which are already married and one that is engaged.” She paused as she ran through her head of who it could be. “Obviously not Ron. He couldn't plan anything even if it was laid right out in front of him.” She griped while taking another drag of her cigarette. “Obviously not you either. Unless, you're keeping MORE secrets from me.” She added while poking Charlie in the chest.
Charlie scoffed and shook his head. “Nope, you would know if it was me.”
A little shit eating grin spread across her face as she thought of Fred. “I'd be pretty damned shocked if Freddy found a wife on the other side.” Charlie shook his head again and grinned. Since the war, Jamie had a hard time adjusting and threw herself into school and her apprenticeship. She never really processed anything that had happened. While her jokes could get dark sometimes, Charlie knew that's how she coped with certain things.
Her eyes got wide at the realization. “HARRY IS PROPOSING TO GINNY?!” She yelled out. Her eyes brightened up and also looked like they were going to pop out of her head. “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?” Happy tears started to pool in her eyes as it was becoming harder and harder for her to hold her excitement in.
Charlie laughed and pulled Jamie into his arms as she fell apart from pure excitement. “Yes he is. He wants to do it at Easter.”
Jamie stopped laugh-crying for a moment and looked up at Charlie. “Wait a damn minute..” She pulled away from Charlie with a confused look on her face which quickly turned into anger. “You mean to tell me that my brother plans on proposing to Ginny and he didnt even bother to fucking tell me?!”
“Calm down. Mum said Harry just asked them today. So I'm sure an owl is waiting for you back at your flat.
“I'm going to kill him.” Jamie gritted through her teeth.
“No you're not.”
“My brother is getting married.”
“Yes he is.”
After a moment, a huge grin spread over Jamie’s face. “GINNY WILL OFFICIALLY BE MY SISTER!” The anger quickly dissipated after her realization. A realization that made Charlie chuckle.
“She HAS been your sister for the last twenty two years you've been in this family.”
“I have to get home. I have to call Harry.” she felt the excitement buzzing through her body as she rushed back inside to grab her paperwork. “Gods, I'm so excited!”
Charlie followed her back into the office. “I know you are but remember, don't, say, anything.” He reminded her as he ran his hands through his hair. “If Ginny finds out, I'm blaming you.”
Jamie silently mocked Charlie as she shoved the papers into her bag. “Oh calm down dragon boy, I'm not going to say anything.”
It didn't take Jamie long to get back to her flat. Considering that it was on the reserve, she could walk home. Well, this time she ran. She busted through her door and threw all of her things onto the couch. She tripped over her rug running to the floo. She looked like a mad woman trying to floo call Harry.
Not long after she called did she see Harry's face in the fireplace. “Hey! What's up?” Harry asked, almost worried. He hadn't seen his sister in months and calls were very few and far in-between since they were both always busy with work. “Um, are you okay..? You're out of breath..”
Jamie was still breathing hard from running home but she had a huge grin on her face. “Are you alone?”
“Yeaahhh… Why?” Harry could see the excitement brewing in her eyes as the blue, green and gold colors in them flickered about in the green flames.
Jamie took a deep breath before she spoke. “WHEN DID YOU PLAN ON TELLING ME THAT YOU ARE PROPOSING TO GINNY AT EASTER?!” She was shaking so much from excitement that she couldn't contain herself. Her brother was finally getting married to his love and that sent Jamie over the moon for him.
Harry's cheeks turned red as he tried to hide a small smirk. “Actually, I planned on calling you when I got home but, that twin telepathy of ours had you beat me to it.” Jamie couldn't contain her excitement. Tears started to spill out as she tried to fumble over her words.
“I just- I mean, YOU'RE GETTING MARRIED, HARRY!!!” She continued to shout as she threw her hands up and clapped them together.
“Speaking of, I'm going to need your help. Obviously Ginny has no idea. Or, I think she doesn't..” Jamie saw her brother get worried that Ginny might have known something. While Charlie assigned Jamie as the “family blabbermouth,” Ginny was notorious for ruining her own surprises for herself. There were multiple times where Molly would hide Christmas gifts when they were all children and Ginny would manage to find all of hers. It got to a point where Molly and Arthur had to charm her gifts as regular objects just so she couldn't find them. Still, with Ginny being Ginny, she always found a way.
“What do you mean? How would she just find out if you just told Mum and Dad about it?”
“Well, I went to Gringotts and got Mum’s ring out of the vault..”
“Oh Harry…” Her entire demeanor changed. Not that she was upset, but it was all becoming very real. More tears spilled from her eyes as she tried to keep up with them with her sleeves.
“It was last week before I said anything to anyone. But, I didn't think to shrink the box down when I put it in my pocket.. I- I think she saw it..”
“Harry…” Jamie groaned as she ran her hands over her face. “Has she said anything?”
“No, not to me anyways. Has she said anything to you?”
“Nope. I talked to her a few days ago and she was acting normal. I'm sure if she knew something she would either tell me or Hermione. And if she does know something, she's just as good of a liar as I thought.” They both laughed and Jamie could see the relief wash over Harry’s body as his shoulders relaxed. “I know it's easier said than done but, try not to stress about it. The more you stress the more likely she's going to think something is up.”
“I know, I know. I just want everything to be perfect.” This was a big step for Harry. Jamie giggled at the thought that Harry seemed more worried about the idea of proposing than having to defeat Voldemort.
“It will be, besides, you have me to help keep her distracted.” She bobbed her head and crossed her arms with a shit eating smirk on her face.
“If you say so Jame,”
“I do say so. Now, get going before Ginny shows up and we both ruin it.
Harry laughed and looked at his sister. While he didn't know her his entire life, he was happy to have someone so close to him. Even Ron couldn't come close to having the same friendship that these two had with each other. “Alright. I will see you on Sunday. DON'T say a thing.”
“Like I told Charlie, Ron is the most likely to fuck it up so, I’d be more worried about him.” She retorted. It was one fucking time and no one seems to be able to let it go, She thought to herself before saying goodbye. “It will be great. I promise.”
“Okay, I'll talk to you later. Love you.”
“Love you too. Tell Ginny I said hi!” Jamie proceeded to shout as they both ended the call. “Merlin, Ginny is going to lose her fucking mind.” She said to herself, smiling while imagining Ginny’s reaction.
Later that night while she was sleeping, she started to smell smoke which woke her up. Jamie rolled out of bed to try and find where the burning smell was coming from. When she walked into the kitchen, she saw nothing but smoke, flames and nothing but pure chaos outside her window. Her eyes grew wide as her adrenaline started to set in. “No no no no no..” She started to panic as she ran out of the kitchen, throwing on her dragon skin boots and snatching her wand. She ran outside to a sea of fire and smoke. She couldn't see anything, but she could hear loud dragon roars left and right. She ran to Charlie’s flat and ran in. Storming into his house, she started screaming for Charlie. “CHARLIE WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!” She screamed as she ran through the flat.
“What the fuck is going on?!” Charlie shouted as he ran out of his bedroom. He was rushing the same way Jamie did and they both ran outside. The moment they ran out, they saw a group of men coming out of the hatchery with three sacks that looked like they were filled with eggs.
“No!” Jamie yelled as she ran towards them. “REDUCTO!” She aimed at the men. It hit the ground in front of them which sent them flying back except one, who continued to run. Jamie ran after him. She was in nothing but a Metallica t-shirt and gym shorts. The fire stung her uncovered legs as she chased after him. Jamie heard Charlie screaming for her to come back but that didn't stop her. She kept running through the trees until she found more men trying to contain her dragon that she had only heard hours ago.
“Vidar! Go! Get out of here!” She commanded as she threw hexes at the others trying to kill her. If she knew any better, they all looked like death eaters.
“Crucio!” A voice yelled as the curse narrowly flew past her head. She was throwing anything she could at them. Through the heat, smoke and burns, Jamie kept fighting. Vidar was throwing flames left and right but after a bit, multiple incarcerous spells flew out of almost all of the men’s wands and wrapped around the dragon.
“SECTUMSEMPRA!” She was able to hit one of the men and ran towards the dragon she raised since starting at the reserve. Before Vidar was fully entrapped in the ropes, he swung his head around and pushed Jamie away. Which sent her flying back about twenty feet before her head smacked against a tree. The last thing she saw before she lost consciousness was Vidar guarding her before he fell to the ground. By the time she passed out, the Ridgeback eggs, Vidar and the men were gone.
Hours passed before Charlie and the others at the reserve were able to find Jamie. They were able to subdue the flames but everything was still a smoky mess. By the time Charlie and the others found Jamie, she was covered in ash, dirt and blood. If Charlie didn't hear her groan from the ground, they all would have walked past her. Healer Callaway joined the group in efforts to find Jamie. All she had to do was take one look at her, and she knew she was in trouble.
“Weasley, she needs to go to St. Mungos. Now.” she commanded. Charlie was in such a state of shock. In his eyes, she was in worse shape than she was after the war. “I've already sent word to their trauma unit that you will be arriving with her shortly via floo. But, you need to go..” Charlie was a tough man. Nothing really bothered him. Except when either one of his sisters were hurt. “Now, Weasley!” Healer Callaway shouted, which snapped Charlie out of his shock.
As soon as Charlie entered St. Mungo’s with Jamie in his arms, the entire trauma floor went into chaos. Jamie was promptly put on a gurney and rolled away. Charlie stood in the hallway, still in shock after everything that happened. Not too long after the fact, His parents, Ginny, Ron and Harry met Charlie at the hospital. Molly was crying into Arthur’s chest as Charlie recanted the events. Harry and Ron went into auror mode and started contacting everyone they knew to start an investigation on the attack. And Ginny, Ginny sat silently in a waiting room chair. Charlie could see that her eyes were glossing over, but her expression was emotionless. She just stared blankly at the floor.
To their surprise, Hermione was working that night and she was the head healer for Jamie’s care and recovery. She sat next to Ginny and grabbed her hand before everyone else gathered around her to hear any news about Jamie. “She has a lot of burns on her legs and she has a concussion. But unfortunately, that's the least of our worries.” While Hermione was the top healer in the country, it didn't make it easier for her to see her friend in such a state. Hermione tried to keep her composure while shoving the images of everyone she saw after the war had ended out of her mind. “She inhaled a lot of smoke and her lungs are working double just to get oxygen into her body. She's stable but is still in critical condition.”
Molly let out a sob and collapsed into a chair. Arthur’s face was full of rage. Ron and Charlie were trying their best to keep calm but, even Hermione could see the worry written all over her boyfriend and friend’s faces. Harry slumped down into the chair next to Ginny and pulled her into his chest. “We are going to keep her sedated for a few days so her lungs can heal. But, as of right now, it's going to be a waiting game for her and for us.
April 13th, 2003
Three days later, Jamie was still sedated. She was finally not in critical condition but they still wanted to monitor her. Harry was able to get some time off of work and never left St. Mungo’s. He stayed by his sister’s side, hoping she would wake up soon.
Harry lifted his tired eyes when he heard a knock on the door and saw Hermione peeking her head in. “Hey,”
“Hey..” Harry replied. Hermione could see how tired he was. She tried multiple times to get Harry to go home, even just for a couple of hours. He refused each time. Harry slowly sat up in his chair and just stared at Jamie. The last time he saw her like this was after the war. If anything, he actually felt that she looked worse than she did after the war, and that scared the living shit out of him. “When is she going to wake up?”
Hermione took a deep breath and also looked over to Jamie. She didn't have to speak her thoughts to know that she was feeling the same way as Harry did. “We gave her her last dose of sleeping draught last night. It should be worn off by now. So, it is up to her body to wake up on her own.”
Harry sighed and sunk back. His thoughts were running a mile a minute. They all felt stuck and were hating every minute of it. “Did anyone tell-?” He cut himself off and paused for a moment.
Hermione raised her brow, giving Harry a very confused look. “Who, Harry?”
Before he could answer, they both heard a woman’s voice shouting from out in the hallway. “Somebody tell me where Jamie Potter is or I swear to Salazar I will overturn this entire place!”
“Oh no.” Dread filled his voice as he heard the woman getting closer.
“What is it?”
“Pansy.”
From outside of the door they heard more yelling. '`Miss, you can't go in there!’ Pansy came bursting into Jamie’s hospital room along with Draco and Theo. Both Hermione and Harry could see the rage in her eyes. Hermione swallowed hard and moved herself in between Pansy and Harry.
Harry looked back and forth from all the eyes that were on him. Draco and Theo looked thoroughly upset and shocked at their friend’s condition. Pansy was nothing but anger. “So, would someone love to fucking explain that four of Jamie’s closest friends, had to find out from the FUCKING PROFIT that she was in the hospital AFTER and alleged attack that left her,” She finally looked over to her best friend. Pansy was not one to show any weakness but, seeing her best friend in the state that she was broke her. “Well, LIKE FUCKING THIS?!?!”
Draco and Theo stayed by the door and kept their mouths shut as Pansy ranted. Harry went to stand up but was promptly shoved back down into the chair by Pansy. “Good Godric Pansy, she's oka-”
“YOU CALL THIS OKAY?!?! Tell me, when was the last time she was awake, hmm?” Pansy was ready to beat the shit out of Harry right there in the middle of the hospital room. Theo pushed himself off of the wall and tried to pull Pansy back.
“Pans, you're going to get us kicked out..” He said quietly into her ear. She pulled herself away from Harry and turned back around to a still, unconscious Jamie. Pansy didn't say anything after that. She just stood at the foot of the bed and quietly sobbed.
“What is her current condition Granger? I know you are currently in charge of her care.” Everyone’s heads snapped over to Draco, who was still basically hiding in the corner. Like Pansy, Draco was not one to show very much emotion unless someone he cared for was hurt. Hermione could see right through him and could see him trying to not fall apart.
Hermione took a deep breath and her shoulders tensed up. “She was sedated with sleeping draught when she was brought in Sunday night. While she has some burns on her legs and a concussion, she inhaled a lot of smoke. We kept her sedated up until today to give her lungs a chance to recover somewhat.” She took in a shaky breath before she continued. “The potion should be out of her system by now so, it’s another waiting game to see when she wakes up.”
Draco clenched his jaw. He stayed put where he was and crossed his arms. “We should been told, fuck head.” If looks could kill, Harry would've been dead ten times over. “When did you actually plan on saying anything anyways? When she was awake and walking around like nothing ever happened?”
Harry sighed and lowered his head. He knew he fucked up by not saying anything to her friends but honestly, the last few days left him in a blur. “Look, I know I messed up-”
“That's a first.” Draco scoffed, glaring at Harry in the process.
“Anyways, we weren't sure what was going to happen…” Harry deadpanned. Everyone went silent after that. They all just stared at Jamie’s beaten, burned, lifeless body.
“Come on Harry, let's give them a minute..” Hermione suggested while lightly patting Harry’s back. “She's going to be okay..”
Harry reluctantly got up out of the chair and walked out. Pansy and Draco scowled at Harry as he left. Theo paid no mind and just let tears fall from his eyes. Hermione followed close behind Harry, but turned around before she walked out. “I know it's not going to help but, as of right now she looks worse than she actually is. She will wake up soon, just give her time.” Hermione gave them all an awkward, tight lipped smile as she also excused herself.
Pansy and Theo sat on both sides of the bed and just cried. Draco still stayed by the door and stayed quiet. The whole time though, he never took his eyes off of her. “I told her that job was going to get her in trouble one day..” Pansy said between sniffles. “Gods, I wish she would have just listened to me…”
“Pans this is not your fault… She was going to Romania even if it killed her.” Theo also hated the idea of Jamie working at the reserve, he also knew that it was her dream since she was eleven.. No one was going to be able to stop her.
“I- I need-” Theo could see that Pansy was falling apart more and more. It was almost scaring both Draco and Theo at the way she was acting. Pansy shot up out of the chair and stormed out of the room, aggressively wiping the tears off her face. Theo followed her out, leaving Draco by himself.
Draco took a deep breath as he slowly walked towards the side of her bed. He sat down and loudly sighed as he looked at the state of Jamie. He sat in silence as he fiddled around with his signet ring. He scanned every inch of her body and got angrier and angrier the more he stared at her. “You just can’t say out of danger, can you Potter?” Draco asked quietly.
He always knew that chaos seemed to follow her everywhere she went. The last few years, and the stories told by Pansy, Jamie seemed to be looking to throw herself into more and more unsafe situations. Draco isn't stupid. He’s seen first hand in the last four years that Jamie was pushing everyone she cared for away, and no one, not even Pansy or Ginny could figure out why. For all of her friends, this was the first time they had really seen her in almost two years.
The twenty minutes that Draco sat there felt like hours. He wasn't expecting Jamie to wake up that day, or at all. Frankly, he hated the thought and tried to shove it back behind walls and wards in his mind. Occulading was the only thing keeping him from going absolutely mental.
To his shock, Jamie started stirring in bed and groaning. Draco’s eyes looked like they were going to pop out of his head the more she started to wake up. Jamie slowly opened her eyes and looked around the unfamiliar room. The last she remembered was her dragon being captured and taken away. After a moment, a sudden wave of panic set in and she quickly sat up in bed, which promptly led to her letting out a yelp. “What the fuck.” Her voice was hoarse and everything was still blurry. As she looked around trying to figure out where she was, she saw a fuzzy outline of blonde hair and a white shirt.
“Good morning, sunshine.” Said Draco and his calm, cool demeanor quickly came back.
Jamie blinked a few times to try and clear her vision. “Draco?”
“The one and only.” Draco was very good at masking his feelings. So, the minute he saw Jamie waking up, his walls went up. “How are you feeling?”
“Everything fucking hurts-” She took a deep breath and winced. “I cant breath,” Another painful breath. “And I want my bed.”
Draco chuckled as he scooted his chair closer to the bed. “You almost die and your bed is your main concern?”
“Yeah,” She winced again trying to adjust herself. “These beds suck..”
Draco gave her a half smile and rolled his eyes. “I don't think that was their top priority when they brought you here, you know.” Jamie rolled her eyes back at him and slid back down into the bed.
“What are you doing here? Did Harry-”
Draco cut her off before she could finish. “No, unfortunately, your half wit brother didn't think to mention it to us. The four of us found out from the Profit today.”
“The raid made the Profit?”
Draco sighed and held up the back of his head with his hands and crossed his leg. “Well, you did. The raid was more or less glossed over.”
Jamie let out a weak giggle and leaned her head back. “Let me guess, Skeeter wrote, ‘Beloved war heroine, brutally attacked in Romania’.” Draco shook his head and scoffed.
“Well, I’m at least happy to see your humor and attitude were left intact. And, to answer your question, something like that.” Jamie’s faint smile quickly dissipated and she ran through the events from that night. She went to reach for her necklace that she always played with when she was anxious and was promptly set into a panic when it wasn't there. Draco looked at her confused as he watched her feel around the bed looking for it. “What's wrong?”
“My necklace is gone. I swear to Salazar if I lost i-” She sighed when she looked over at the side table and saw the silver ring and chain laying right there. “Oh thank the Gods..” Draco’s eyes got wide when he saw grab the same necklace that he gave her in eighth year.
“I can't believe you still have that bloody thing.” To Jamie, it sounded like he was joking but to him. It surprised him.
Jamie sat in bed, clenching on to the necklace like she was going to lose it again. “What? You gave it to me so I would quit picking at my fingers and now I'm convinced it's good luck.”
Draco snorted at her comment and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Oh yeah? What makes you say that miss dragon tamer?
“Well, I never took it off so I was wearing it that night. Now, through some miracle, I'm not dead. So, if you ask me, it's pretty damn lucky.”
