Chapter 9
Everyone jumped from their seats attention turned to the person who walked inside directly towards the shrines statue and offered a prayer. Calmed down a tad Asier voice bellows “Irina Sirius, what have I told you about slamming the door!” The loud voice spooking everyone including the offender, Irina, further the witch shaking slightly as she tried to calm herself away from a panic attack.
“Ah Father! I do apologise! I am just excited I’ve got a small batch of deputy troops which means I’ve been promoted to a group head, there were reports made in the city that Rayne works in and because I had been the top in the scout team there who rescued the now retired group head that use to work in the city from the witch half breeds that escaped last month!” Irina spoke with glee, her eyes glancing across the table and laying eyes on the witch who had finally calmed down sipping some water. Eyes widening in realisation they apologised profusely “Oh! Todays the day the madam Rayne was talking about comes over, I am so sorry madam!”
Asier steps up and moves to go hug their child, proud of their accomplishments towards the deputies, brushing their shoulders before they both moved to their respective seats, everyone else quietly clapping at the achievements of someone so young.
“Zain, if Rayne agrees I could use some help tomorrow, I’ve got a large collection of old books that I need to take to my friend Bruno. He works with his wife in an antique shop just by the city, he makes copies of old books to be able to reprint their stories and rewrite old languages, he is a scholar of sorts but mostly a collector of sorts his family has been doing it for generations, so they’ve got a fair bit of history themselves. He can translate due to the fact that his family would do so when needed it’s rare that their knowledge of language isn’t taught and past on through generation.” Estelle offered, her voice a tad shaky after everything that had happened in the past few minutes.
“Wait really?!” Raynes eyes basically glowed with hope, sure the café work was good for experience and all but the opportunity to be in the presence of so many old books was just way too enticing, moving towards her parents she begged “Can I please? I’m not rostered on for a few days while Ms Visha gets some plumbing and lighting issues fixed!”
The three parents share a glance as Nova sighs, “Well it does sound like she’ll be doing good and it’s better experience then helping clean the shrine or joining myself farming, so why not, if its fine with Madam Estelle.” The woman in question nodded “Yes it would be perfect, Rayne I can take you from the Café to my place at about five am if you’re with me you might as well also help me do some watering while I grab the needed books else, I might not be able to get both done.” With the discussion finished everyone began to eat till Asier mentioned,
“Irina, you never did mention what was reported?” and everyone looked up true to his words they hadn’t mentioned. The person just smirked as she began “There's a witch been spotted not far out of town we believe she could be hiding the half breeds, so I’ve gone and sent out a bunch of scouts to map out the forest just out from the city! If we’re lucky they will be an immortal and I can go report it to my own general and get some more notice so I can continue to move up ranks! Imagine me a general or even a commander!” huffing in pride at her own achievements she glanced around stopping when she met a frown from the madam. At the notice she was being stared at the madam spoke up her voice holding no traces of anxiety “No you wouldn’t move up if it were an immortal. For starters they are dangerous individuals with knowledge that makes your own look like a needle in a haystack, next what would you do if it was a god just wanting piece or a witch? And it goes against any laws you deputies follow, you have never been allowed to interfere with the life of an immortal without proof else you’d be convicted of harassment towards an immortal.” The words left a harsh calling out towards Irina who was left struck from her own ignorance, she stood up and desperately called out “What should I do then?! Gosh I am so done for how could I forget?!”
The madam sighed at this childish behavior. “For starters you need to calm down and think this through, have any sightings of these so called ‘Half breeds’ actually been seen? And is the story of these people actually true, a lot of times it can just be someone acting out and calling another a witch because they feel wronged take the event the other day the woman had called myself a witch because I told her she was being entitled. And if you do find someone living all out in the forest don’t just barge in to their house, I happen to live in the forest that you speak of, and I know that there is a hand full of farmers who rely of the land.”
Thoroughly scolded, Irina excuses herself to head to her room and replan her actions. Seeing the time Estelle agrees and says her goodbyes collecting her basket, while reminding Rayne that if she isn’t there by five fifteen in the morning, she’ll head of back with Nova agreeing mentioning that she can drop her off before work as she has some produce to deliver to the markets before dawn.
