Seeds of Something More
They stayed in the greenhouse longer than they probably should have, talking about everything and nothing. Luz told Willow about the new glyph combinations she was experimenting with, while Willow showed Luz how to coax a plant to bloom with the right words and a bit of patience.
It was easy. Natural.
But eventually, Luz stretched her arms and let out a dramatic sigh. “Well, I should probably head back before Eda thinks I got eaten by a carnivorous fern.”
Willow chuckled. “She wouldn’t be wrong. I do have one of those.”
Luz gasped, eyes wide with excitement. “Can I see it?!”
Willow shook her head fondly. “Not tonight. I like you too much to let you get chomped.”
Luz grinned. “I appreciate that.”
They made their way out of the greenhouse, stepping into the cool night air. Fireflies flitted between the trees, casting tiny golden specks of light across the garden.
As they walked, Luz slowed her steps. “Hey, um… Can I tell you something?”
Willow glanced at her. “Of course.”
Luz hesitated, stuffing her hands into her pockets. “I’ve been thinking a lot lately. About… stuff.”
“Stuff?” Willow prompted gently.
Luz took a deep breath. “About you.”
Willow’s heart stopped.
“I mean, not in a weird way!” Luz added quickly. “Just… I don’t know. You make me feel really safe. Like I don’t have to pretend to be anything other than myself when I’m with you.”
Willow felt something soft and fragile bloom in her chest, like the first sprout of spring pushing through frozen ground. “I feel the same way,” she admitted.
Luz looked up, hope flickering in her eyes. “You do?”
Willow nodded. “You’re… special to me, Luz.”
The words hung between them, heavy with meaning.
Luz swallowed. “And maybe… I don’t know. Maybe I want to be more than just friends?”
Willow stared at her, unable to speak.
For so long, she had buried this feeling, convincing herself that Luz was meant for someone else, that she was just imagining things. But now—here, under the stars, with Luz looking at her like this—it didn’t feel impossible anymore.
She reached out, fingers brushing against Luz’s. A soft green light pulsed between them, the magic in Willow’s veins reacting instinctively. Around them, the fireflies seemed to glow just a little brighter.
Luz inhaled sharply, her fingers tightening around Willow’s. “Is this… okay?”
Willow’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Yeah. It’s okay.”
Luz exhaled, a smile spreading across her face. “Cool. Because I kind of really, really want to kiss you right now.”
Willow let out a soft laugh. “Then what’s stopping you?”
Luz’s eyes searched hers for a moment longer—then, carefully, she leaned in.
The kiss was soft, uncertain, like a flower blooming for the first time. Willow felt her magic surge, vines curling gently around their feet, petals unfurling in response to the warmth in her chest.
When they finally pulled away, Luz let out a breathless laugh. “Whoa.”
Willow smiled, resting her forehead against Luz’s. “Yeah. Whoa.”
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in quiet warmth, the world around them humming with life.
And just like that, something new had taken root.
Something wild.
Something beautiful.
Something worth growing.
The End.
