The Worst of the Best

You opened your curtains to an empty room and a window letting in the morning light. On another day, you would have basked in the warmth, but not today. You barely even wanted to get up. You got your robes on, got your school bag and all of your things for today, and headed off down towards the Great Hall. You had just put jelly on your toast, when a red envelope had landed in front of you. With gasps from other tables, and tears forming in your eyes, you opened the letter. "Celeste Malfoy! We raised you better than this!" Lucius's voice had yelled out. "This is absurd! No child of mine should EVER be ignorant enough to be placed in G- I don't even want to say it! Over five hundred years our family has been in Slytherin, encasing our purity, and you go and mess it up! You are an absolute disgrace to our family! Just be glad I don't come down there myself and take you out for this foolish behavior!" he sighed. "You're just like your blood traitor of an uncle. I am beyond outraged that you would ruin my family with this!" the letter finished, then tore itself into many little pieces. "Celeste? Are you alright?" George said in a worried tone just before you got up and practically sprinted out of the hall. “You forgot your toast,” George said when it was apparent you wouldn't be coming back.

You went straight to the owlery knowing that you still didn't have the password to Gryffindor tower, and needed a break from the houses. You cried and Midnight had flown over for cuddles. You tried to keep yourself from crying, but that didn't work out. What if someone comes in? What am I going to do now? Your thoughts were interrupted by another Gryffindor girl walking in. “Hello? Um- Celeste?” the girl said. You got up from the ground and looked at the girl. She had mid-length brown hair and hazel eyes. “Um- so, my name is Violet. VIolet Quinn? I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” the kind girl asked. “Oh, um-sure, yeah I'm fine.” you replied. “Okay. I just wanted to make sure. We’re roommates, by the way. Oh! I almost forgot, I brought your toast if you’re hungry.” she said, handing you the plate. You both had just stayed there in silence- not an uncomfortable one. All of the sudden Violet said “George was about to come himself, but Ava, one of our roommates, had suggested that I go instead. He was really worried, and he totally likes you!” to which you replied “Really? ‘Cmon, we’re just friends.”. “We’ll see about that,” she said with a smirk.

You both went back to the Great Hall afterwards to collect your class schedules. You had flying lessons with Ravenclaws, Transfiguration with Hufflepuffs, followed by double potions with Slytherins today. Professor McGonnagal had stopped you on your way out, asking you “Please see me after my class today, Celeste.” then allowing you to get on with your day. You and George made your way to Madam Hooch for your first class of the day- flying. “Each of you please get to your left side of the broom, then say ‘up’, just as so. Keep going until it comes up to your hand like my example did.” she instructed all of you. As she starts going around and giving some pointers on how to do it, you say “Up.” and it makes it halfway, then drops down to the ground. “Up.” you say again, only for it to rise a few inches less than your last attempt. Your patience is growing thin, and as you say “Up!” for the third time it barely moves. Trying to keep calm, you say “Up.” for the fourth time, and it makes it a few feet off of the ground. “Keep going, you’ve almost got it!” Madam Hooch said before critiquing the twins. You closed your eyes, and felt the throbbing magic around you, then said “Up,” and before you knew it, the broom had come up and levitated until you grabbed it. “Well done, Ms.Malfoy! We are going to start practicing mounting in a few minutes." she alerted the class.

Soon enough your first class went well, and you were off to charms with George and Fred. The howler from earlier and the question of what McGonagal would want to talk to you privately about was stirring in your mind, causing clouds. After your fascinating lesson of turning small rats into water goblets, you headed up to the front of the class as everyone filed out and headed towards the Great Hall for lunch. "Ahh, Celeste. Thank you for coming. Do you know why I asked to see you?" Professor McGonnagal asked. "Because of my lycanthropy?" you said, questionable. "No, but rather I'd like to talk to you about being sorted into Gryffindor. I've seen this happen to students before and I'd like you to know that my door is always open for you, whenever you need it." the kind Professor told you.You had been stunned that she was being so nice, it just couldn't be the same witch from before and in class. "Thank you!" you said almost on the verge of tears.

"Where have you been!" George and Fred asked when you finally walked into lunch. "I just had a question. That's all." you said. "Hey," said a girl with short, straight and dark hair, blue eyes, and many freckles. "You're the Malfoy everyone's talking about, aren't you?" she asked. "Yeah, I'm her sadly. May I ask why?" you replied. "My name is Scarlette, and I just want you to know that I might not be in your position, but if you need someone to talk to, just know that I’m the bed to your left in the dorm.” she said with a hopeful smile, and you smiled back. Still upset from the recent events, but you have a newfound hope- Maybe this won't be as bad as I thought after all…
