Chapter 16 - My friend
He hesitates for a moment then presses his lips against mine, the kiss is not passionate by any stretch of the imagination but it still catches my breath until he pulls away.
‘I don’t want to complicate things Milli, you know I would love to, but what if it..”, I lift one of my hands and put my finger against his lip to shush him.
“You’re complicating things now”, I say quietly as he hovers above me in the same position he fell.
“It’s just I’ve never had any kind of relationship, never mind a girlfriend, I’m just always so scared of doing something wrong and messing everything up, I don’t want to loose you as a friend”.
Friend, the word cuts through me like a knife through hot butter.
“We are friends Ominis, nothing will change that, I’m sorry if I’ve pushed you too far, I didn’t say I wanted a relationship other than what we have, it was just a laps of judgment on my part, I’m sorry.”
“You act like I said I didn’t want it, I said I was scared..”, he rolls from on top of me to his side of the bed and rubs his milky white eyes with the back of his hand.
“My parents were evil, you know that, but my mother wasn’t always so bad, being with my father made her the way she is, I just always think about how that could be me and you, I know I’m not my father, but I’m not perfect”, his voice catches on that last word.
“Ominis, you’re one of the most caring and gentle people I have ever met, there is no way that you would ever turn out like them, separate the flower from the thorns and realise that you’re more than your family name, you’re you and you get to build your own legacy, you’re worthy of a good life and worthy of love”, I say quietly.
I see a solemn tear escape from his eye.
“I think I love you Millicent”, Ominis sobs though his now steady tears.
“I have loved you for years”, I say before embracing him.
