Chapter 14 - Morning Break
I wake to the feeling of Ominis’s light breathing against my back, somehow during our sleep we had moved to be spooning and his arms were wrapped around my waist loosely, I lie silent and still, as to not disturb him from slumber.
I watch the sky out of the window beside me change from dark to shining golden yellow behind the light net curtains, I can hear the neighbours rooster crowing loudly in the yard until Mr Bunting shouts.
“Stupid bird, you’ll be in next weeks pie, I’m telling you!”.
I laugh to myself silently, the vibrations must have woken Ominis as he starts to stir against me.
“sweetheart, are you awake?”, he whispers quietly against my neck.
Hopefully he can’t feel the goosebumps erupting up and down my skin.
“Yes Ominis, I’m watching the sunrise, sorry did I wake you?”.
“No, no it’s fine, I can see the light coming through anyway, I’d have been awake soon anyway”.
He rolls to the side and props himself up with his arm, cloudy eyes adjusting to the light as he squints, i never realised he could see light, I just assumed it was always dark, there’s more to him than I know and all I want to do is know more.
“I don’t think I can go back to sleeping alone, I’ve not slept so well in a long time”, Ominis jokes.
I wonder if there is a hint of truth in what he says, I pause before reaching for his hand.
“I’d like that”.
“Pardon?”, he looks in my direction.
“I’d like it if you slept with me, platonically of-course, but I feel so much calmer with someone around, even if you were only in the next room, it’s different being able to feel your presence next to me”, I explain sheepishly.
“I was hoping you would say that”, he pushes off the bed to stand, wrapped in a dark green dressing gown he feels towards the chest of draws and retrieves his wand, exiting the room with a swift movement.
