Slytherin Creatures

BASILISK

A wizard-bred Dark creature of enormous power, this extremely poisonous giant serpent (up to 50 feet in length) is brilliant green in color with long thin saber-like fangs and bulbous yellow eyes. The first basilisk was created by Herpo the Foul thousands of years ago (FW).

A basilisk can live for at least 900 years given an adequate food supply, and as it can eat most vertebrates (including humans), this is not difficult to achieve. The male can be distinguished from the female by the scarlet plume on its head, but basilisks are usually magically rather than normally bred.

Basilisk-breeding has been outlawed since medieval times and in the present day falls under the Ban on Experimental Breeding, but this law has rarely been broken even by Dark wizards, since only a Parselmouth can control a basilisk.

When unleashed by the Heir of Slytherin using Parseltongue, the basilisk that lived in the Chamber of Secrets searched the castle for its prey, Muggle-born students, which it apparently could identify by smelling their blood (“I smell blood…” the creature cried as it wandered the pipes). When its eyes were pecked out by Fawkes, it attacked Harry using its keen sense of smell. Harry killed the basilisk by thrusting a sword through the roof of its mouth. Harry’s arm was pierced by one of the basilisk’s fangs, the poison of which nearly killed him.

Apart from its specific magical powers and long lifespan, many of the characteristics of the basilisk follow naturally from it’s being a serpent (see). Like more mundane serpents, the basilisk sheds its skin at intervals, and its varied diet is typical of the larger snakes, which tend to pursue larger and larger prey according to their own size and capabilities. It’s quite possible that had Harry both retained his wand and been more experienced in Defence Against the Dark Arts, he might have lost his battle against the basilisk in attempting to use Stunning Spells; although not explicitly stated, the basilisk’s skin probably has the same armor characteristics as dragon skin, leaving its eyes and the inside of its mouth as its only vulnerable points.

SNAKES

Snakes are reptilian creatures. Below is a list of snake and snake-like creatures found in the magical world:

  • ashwinder
  • basilisk
  • boa constrictor – Harry accidentally released from the zoo, frightening Dudley half to death and resulting in a severe punishment from Uncle Vernon (PS2)
  • Dragon
  • Nagini
  • Occamy
  • runespoor
  • sea serpent
  • c.f. Serpensortia

Slytherin members, part 1

SALAZAR SLYTHERIN

Salazar Slytherin was the founder of Slytherin house and one of the co-founders of Hogwarts, described as one of “the four greatest witches and wizards of the age” (along with the other three founders) .

He believed that only pure-blood witches and wizards should be allowed to attend Hogwarts. He got into a disagreement with the other founders, especially Gryffindor, about this and eventually left the school. As well as blood purity, he also valued cunning and ambition in the students he selected for his house

There was a legend that Slytherin built a secret chamber somewhere in Hogwarts that only his true heir would be able to open. This chamber, called the Chamber of Secrets, contained a monster that would finish his “noble purpose” of eradicating all the Muggle-born students at Hogwarts . According to legend, Slytherin reconciled with the other founders later in life and came back to Hogwarts Castle to die .

MERLIN

Merlin, a Charms specialist sometimes known as “The Prince of Enchanters,” is unquestionably the most famous wizard of all time .

He was part of the Court of King Arthur (King Arthur once ruled the land that is now part of England). He believed that wizards should help Muggles and therefore created the Order of Merlin to support laws protecting and benefiting Muggles

THE BLOODY BARON

The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin House ghost, a grim, silent, and terrifying specter with a gaunt face and blank eyes. His robes are covered with silver bloodstains. He is never heard to speak, although Harry does impersonate him once, using a hoarse whisper. A favorite pastime of his is “groaning nd clanking up on the Astronomy Tower”.

When alive a millennium ago, the Baron was in love with Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. When Rowena lay dying, she sent the Baron to find Helena and beg her to come back. Helena refused and the Baron lost his temper and killed her. In his remorse, he committed suicide with the same knife, and now carries the bloody evidence of his crime on his ghostly clothing. He also carries chains as a sign of penitence.

Peeves, who respects the Baron for some unknown reason, calls him “Your Bloodiness” and “Mr. Baron.”.

The Baron takes pride in Slytherin and its students. Nearly Headless Nick tells Harry that he hopes Gryffindor wins the House Cup because Slytherin had won it for the last six years and the Baron has become “almost unbearable”.

Harry notices that the other ghosts at Nick’s 500th Deathday Party give the Baron “a wide berth” suggesting that other ghosts, as well as Peeves, fear the Baron.

During a ghost council meeting, the Bloody Baron refuses to let Peeves attend the start of term feast despite the Fat Friar’s willingness to give him a chance.

Slytherin members, part 2

PHINEAS NIGELLUS BLACK

Phineas Nigellus Black was the great-great-grandfather of Sirius Black, who has been known to refer to him as the least-popular Headmaster Hogwarts has ever had.

Phineas' portrait hangs in the Headmaster's office along with those of other previous Headmasters, and he rather grudgingly helps Dumbledore when pressed. His portrait also hangs in number twelve Grimmauld Place; he and Sirius did not get along well.

Phineas is a snide, sarcastic fellow. He has little patience for the feelings and the problems of others, particularly young people, whom he finds tedious and self-absorbed.

Phineas helped Hogwarts Headmaster Snape keep a track of the movements of Harry, Ron, and Hemione when they were on the run from the Death Eaters because Hermione had placed his portrait from Grimmauld Place into her beaded bag.

HORACE SLUGHORN

Horace Slughorn is a teacher at Hogwarts. He served as Potions Master until 1981, then again from 1996. He was also Head of Slytherin house for the school year 1997-1998.

At the beginning of Harry’s 6th year at Hogwarts, Dumbledore and Harry convince a genial wizard named Horace Slughorn to come out of retirement to teach Potions. Ever since Voldemort regained his powers, Slughorn had lived in fear that he will be confronted by Death Eaters and pressured to join them. For over a year he constantly moved from place to place, inhabiting the homes of muggles who leave their houses unattended.

Slughorn is charming and jovial, and genuinely admired Harry’s mother, Lily Evans. However, Harry is wary of such fawning attention, and throughout the school year maintained a distance that must have frustrated the Potions Master. Who can blame Harry, after meeting so many people who would use him and his fame for their own ends?

An “old friend and colleague” of Dumbledore’s, Slughorn is one of the first Slytherins that Harry has met who has no prejudices against muggle-born or half-blood wizards. Indeed, Lily Evans was one of his favorite students.

Slughorn has partaken of the Felix Felicis potion twice (2 Tbsp. with breakfast) in his life: when he was 24, and when he was 57. He clearly has very fond memories of those two days.

Slughorn’s secret

But Slughorn has a shameful secret — it was he who told Tom Riddle about some of the darkest magic of all: Horcruxes. Tom had already opened the Chamber of Secrets and been responsible for at least four deaths. Perhaps this is why Slughorn is so very shaken when Dumbledore is killed.

Slughorn attended the funeral for Hagrid’s friend, the giant Acromantula known as Aragog, and even spoke the eulogy. But he also didn’t mind “collecting” some of the valuable venom beforehand. He also showed an interest in a unicorn tail hair hanging in Hagrid’s Hut, since it was worth many galleons and could have bought quite a lot of wine and crystallized pineapple. After Harry refilled their glasses several times, Hagrid gave Slughorn the entire unicorn tail and they drank a toast to it: “To friendship! To generosity! To ten Galleons a hair!”.

Slughorn fought in the Battle of Hogwarts whilst wearing emerald-green silk pajamas, where he dueled with Voldemort.

AVERY

Avery was a Death Eater who attended Hogwarts with Severus Snape and served the Dark Lord during the first war with Voldemort. He avoided Azkaban by claiming to be under the Imperius Curse, and thus was punished by Voldemort with the Cruciatus Curse once the Dark Lord rose again in the Little Hangleton graveyard.

Avery made another mistake when he led Voldemort to believe that Broderick Bode would be able to remove a prophecy ball from the Department of Mysteries. Not only did Bode fight Lucius Malfoy’s Imperius Curse, but the task was impossible since only those mentioned in a prophecy can remove the containers.

Probably related (father/son?) to the Avery that attended Hogwarts with Tom Riddle, metioned by Horace Slughorn in a memory from the Pensieve.

Your weekly dose of Magizoology: Hippogriff’s

Written by: Lexis Malfoy (

01/23/2023

I’m super excited to enlighten your world on the wonders of Magizoology! First, what is Magizoology? Magizoology is the study of Magical Creatures. The most famous Magizoologist whom I will be referring to the most is Newt Scamander, who is a wizard who helped defeat former headmaster Dumbledore's lover, Gellert Grindelwald.

The first magical creature I will introduce you to is the Hippogriff. You may have learned them in your Care for Magical Creatures class, and if so then you're familiar with their proud nature. Hippogriffs are half horse-half eagle. With feathers and long wings, a strong horse build, they are strong and magnificent creatures. In late 1993 and early 1994 when the famous Harry Potter was in his 3rd year, Rubeus Hagrid was appointed Care of Magical Creatures, or CMC, professor. His first lesson was about the Hippogriff. In the journal kept by Hermione Granger, she suggests that Professor Hagrid considered the Hippogriff “Proud. Easily offended.”

As said, they are very proud creatures. You have to make sure you're being polite with them. To approach one, you have to walk towards him/her and take a bow. Then you wait. If he/she bows back, that means they have given you permission to touch them. If they don’t, they get away from them slowly or else they will attack. When and if they do bow, you have to make sure you make slow movements. Never make the first move. The Hippogriff is always the one who should come to you. Try your hardest not to blink while making eye contact, if you do, they won't trust you if you blink too much. Also, never insult one. If you do, it might be the last thing you ever do.

Big question. Can you ride one? Of course. Only if they give you permission. Rember, consent is key! So how do you ride them? Well first, get consent. You don't want to be ripped to pieces by their beak do you? To get on, climb up just behind the wing joint. NEVER pull their feathers. Swing one leg up at a time, like riding a muggle horse, and wrap your arms around his/her neck, not too tight. She/He will take off and there you go! You're riding a Hippogriff!

What do they eat? According to Newt Scamander, “Hippogriffs burrow for insects, and they will also eat birds and small mammals. Buckbeak seems to have a particular relish for foods so rare they ooze blood, which is lovely.”

Where do they live? Hippogriffs are native to Europe, and the Hogwarts herd live in the Forbidden Forest. When they are breeding, a Hippogriff will build a nest on the ground and lay a single large egg, which hatches within 24 hours. Hippogriffs can usually fly within a week of birth, but it takes many months before they are able to travel great distances.

The word ‘Hippogriff’ was adopted into English in the 1600s. Often shown on heraldic coats of arms, in the 19th century Hippogriffs became a regular subject of visual art, appearing in works by the prolific French artist Gustave Doré. They were supposedly a symbol of the Greek god Apollo, and the word Hippogriff comes from the Ancient Greek word for horse, ‘hippos’, and the Italian ‘grifo’, which means griffin, that other mythical half-eagle creature. According to legend, Hippogriffs are created when a griffin mates with a horse, hence the name. The Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto wrote about a Hippogriff in his 1516 epic Orlando Furioso. His Hippogriff flies around the world and helps one of the poem’s heroes, Ruggiero, rescue the pagan princess Angelica.
