Blaise spends time with Fred during the year and even goes to the Yule Ball with him. He is excited to be going with a Quidditch player and hopes that Fred will be very popular in the ballroom. However, Blaise feels very uncomfortable when he sees that Fred is not as popular as he thought he would be. The girls at the ball are more interested in Ron Weasley and Harry Potter, who both aren't even attending the ball, than they are in Fred. Blaise is disappointed that his crush isn't very popular, but is still happy to be at the ball with him. During the ball, Fred asks Blaise to dance, but they don't really talk while they dance. They spend most of their time watching Ron and Ginny Weasley dance together. They are disappointed when Ron leaves the ball with Hermione Granger and Harry leaves with Ginny.
Later in the night, Fred asks Blaise if he wants to go back to Gryffindor Tower to hang out with his brother George for a bit. Although Blaise has been having a lot of fun at the ball, he accepts Fred's offer and leaves with him. They find George in their dormitory and sit down next to each other on George's bed to talk. During this conversation, Blaise learns a lot about George and realizes that it was George who was standing by the lake earlier that year when he first noticed Fred. Blaise realises that he had been attracted to George all along and has been falling for him all year long. He also begins to think that his feelings for Fred may have been a little one sided all this time. When it is time for everyone to go back to their dormitories, Blaise walks back with George instead of Fred. He is sad that he didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Fred before he left and decides not to tell him about how much he likes him.
After the Yule Ball and into the new year, Blaise finds himself spending more time with George than ever before. He tells George that he likes him, but doesn't tell him that he loves him yet because he is afraid of losing him as a friend if they become more serious than they are now. He also doesn't tell Fred about his feelings because he doesn't want to ruin their friendship or make things awkward between them. By February, Blaise realizes that he needs to tell George how he feels before it becomes too late for him to tell him how much he loves him. He knows that their relationship isn't going anywhere long term without an honest conversation between them about how they feel about each other.
Blaise tells George how much he likes him and admits that he loves him too. He explains that it's hard for him to admit his feelings because he has always been raised as an only child who doesn't need anyone else in his life because his parents are dead and there's no one else left in his family besides distant relatives who won't take care of him if something happens to them. Blaise tells George about his feelings for Fred and explains that although he does still have feelings for him, they are nothing compared to what he feels for George now because George means everything to him now.
George confesses that although it took him a long time to realize it, he has had feelings for Blaise since before Christmas break last year when they were in Hogsmeade together during their first weekend off from school during their first semester of 5th year. He tells Blaise how much he loves him too and even says it in Latin so they will always remember this moment together since they had just learned Latin together during their first semester of 5th year as part of their Ancient Runes class curriculum.
