Hogwarts had been in need of a modernisation for a long time. The administrative side of things had been almost completely neglected over the years and it was a miracle that the school was still in operation, really. The school had been so behind in times, that the Ministry of Magic had to step in and take over the school’s accounting.
Hermione Granger, after many years of working for the ministry, had become head account manager and was doing an excellent job. She was very efficient at what she was doing and was trusted by the minister himself. It was a pity that she was so busy, because she’d always had her heart set on teaching.
Hermione had written her Hogwarts application essay and had it on her desk waiting for her owl to deliver it to McGonagall. Hermione had held off on mailing it in, because she was waiting for the right moment to approach McGonagall with it. After all, she was already in her forties and it was unlikely that she’d change her mind on the matter.
Hermione was just getting ready to leave her office when her owl flew in with a small package. She took it and thanked the bird, before returning to her desk. It was from Hogwarts.
Hermione opened the package and found a letter from McGonagall and a very familiar-looking application essay. Hermione’s eyes widened as she read the letter.
Dear Miss Granger,
I have been reviewing your application for the position of Muggle Studies teacher and I have decided to appoint you as the new Muggle Studies teacher.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Hermione was so excited that she wanted to do a little happy dance, but she knew that if she did, she’d probably fall over and knock her prized coffee mug to the floor. It was a gift from her friend Neville, who had opened a new franchise of Starbucks in Hogwarts.
Hermione stood and held the letter up in the air and cheered. “Yes!”
She was finally going to be able to teach at Hogwarts!
Hogwarts had been desperate for a Muggle Studies teacher for the past two years, ever since the last teacher had retired. The curriculum had not been updated in those two years, which meant that the students were no longer being prepared for life in the 21st century.

Hermione knew about the desperate need for a new Muggle Studies teacher, because she’d been asked to write an application essay on the topic. It was a sort of trial essay, to test whether she was suitable for the job, as well as an essay she could use for her final application. Hermione had written about the Muggle world and the importance of teaching Muggle Studies.
Hermione had been surprised when she’d gotten a letter from McGonagall, requesting a meeting to discuss her application essay. Hermione couldn’t imagine why McGonagall would want to meet her, as she was fairly certain that her essay was perfect.
Hermione had never been so nervous in her life, but she still managed to remain perfectly composed, even though she was shaking in her high heels.
McGonagall had read through Hermione’s essay and had been impressed. She had read ‘The Wizarding World and the Muggle World – A Comparison’ and had been pleased with how Hermione had written about the importance of teaching Muggle Studies. McGonagall had hoped that Hermione would be interested in the position, so she’d put in a good word for her with the Ministry of Magic.
After the meeting, McGonagall had been pleased to see Hermione’s application essay on her desk, as she’d forgotten to send it in. She’d pulled Hermione’s essay out and had been surprised to see that Hermione had changed her mind and had included a note saying that she’d like to take the position if it was still available.
McGonagall had been delighted, and had sent a letter to Hermione agreeing to her terms. McGonagall had been doubly happy that Hermione was taking the position and that she’d decided to use the essay that she’d read during their meeting.
