Lily Evans couldn't believe her eyes when she woke up that morning. A letter was resting on her pillow, tied to a familiar looking owl. It was the same owl that she had seen at school, the one that belonged to James Potter. It was obvious that he had written to her, but why? It was only the beginning of the summer holidays and he didn't have any Quidditch matches coming up.
She had expected him to be a bit more despicable by this point, but the letter was actually quite civil. Lily supposed that politeness was all she could expect from him, seeing as they were in her family home.
"Lily,
I know that we're not exactly friends and you don't really like me, but I'm writing to you because I need your help. You're the only one I can turn to.
Sincerely,
Pr-- James."
Well, he had asked nicely enough. And he was right, she didn't really dislike him. Lily took a moment to consider her options. She could just burn the letter and forget about it, or she could reply and maybe have a bit of fun with it. She had always found James Potter to be a bit of a laugh, and he was certainly good at coming up with insults.
Lily picked up a quill and some parchment and started to write.
Dear Prat,
Since you asked so nicely, I'll help you. But only because I feel sorry for you.
Sincerely,
Lily
She tied the letter to the owl and sent him on his way. She didn't think she would hear anything back, but to her surprise, another letter was delivered the next morning.
Dear Princess,
I'm so glad you agreed to help me. I know we've had our differences in the past, but I think that we could become good friends. I'd like to start over and get to know you better.
Sincerely,
Prat
Lily couldn't help but smirk. This was going to be fun.
Dear Prick,
Sounds like a plan. I'd like to get to know you better too. I'll meet you at the Quidditch pitch at 2 o'clock on Saturday. Don't be late.
Sincerely,
Princess
She waited for a reply, but this time he didn't write back. A week went by without any letters and Lily almost wondered if he was giving up. She had almost forgotten about him when another letter arrived the next morning.
Princess,
I'll be there, but I expect you to be on time.
Pr-- James
Lily couldn't help but snort. She could already tell that this was going to be a fun summer.
