An Explainer
An Explainer
As this will be a longer fic, I think it will be helpful to have a "chapter" devoted to explaining what exactly is happening here and how the world works.
Firstly, let’s begin with government. The government of Magical Britain exists as a subset of Her Majesty’s Government, even as it acts as a semi-autonomous body. The Wizengamot is made up of 45 Houses and 8 Ministry seats, in addition to the Chief Warlock, who may only vote in the event of a tie. Even as there are 45 Houses, these Houses combine with the 8 Ministry seats for a total of 80 votes in the Wizengamot. This is due to the inclusion of additional votes for Houses holding rank or members holding an Order of Merlin, First Class (OMFC). The breakdown of Wizengamot votes and Factions at the beginning of this fic is as follows:
The Light: 11 Houses, 26 votes

- Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
- Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation
- Head of the Department of Magical Transportation
- Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports
- Head of the Department of Mysteries
For the Ministry, each Department Head is permitted to vote on the Wizengamot, in addition to their House Votes. There are five divisions of House type: Ancient and Most Noble, Ancient and Noble, Ancient, Noble, and House.
Ancient and Most Noble Houses are allocated five votes, and typically have been around since the founding of the Wizengamot. They have also contributed significantly to the advancement and protection of the Wizarding World. Ancient and Noble Houses similarly have been long-established, and have contributed to the advancement of the Wizarding World. These Houses are granted three votes. Ancient Houses are also older Houses, usually more than 500 years old. Noble Houses are younger Houses that have contributed significantly to society. Both Ancient Houses and Noble Houses are allocated two votes. The remaining Houses have not yet necessarily proven themselves to the Wizengamot or have done something to offend the Wizengamot in the past, even if it did not bar expulsion (for example, the Weasleys were dropped from Ancient and Noble to a simple House).
This "chapter" may be periodically edited as more information becomes necessary. Any updates will be noted in Author's Notes at the end of a respective chapter.
