Apparently, Death, Chaos, and Shadow’s trip toward the looming gates of Purgatory hadn’t been quite as discreet as they’d thought – not that they’d tried to hide it, of course.
Still, the young goddess hadn’t expected to see Time&Eternity and Fate as she prepared to drop by her own birth planet to meet with War – Light had promised the other god he’d escort him through the Purgatory to find back his powers after all. And since Light wasn’t available right now, Shadow intended to keep her partner’s promise.

“The Purgatory is a strange and dangerous place.” Time&Eternity expressed, his calm face not quite hiding the hint of worry, “Its state is ever-changing, and lost worlds, hazardous powers and damaged souls cohabit. It’s a place where you’ll find that even as a goddess, you won’t be as all-powerful as you could expect.” a smile, “Though I guess you’re rather well-used to have restrictions placed upon yourself.”
Shadow nodded – even in the last world she’d incarnated in, no matter how little restriction there had been on her godly powers compared to worlds she’d preciously experienced, she still had to pay the consequences of her power.
Time&Eternity had it right. She understood very well that no matter how powerful they were, even they, First and Second Circles gods, had some limitations. She was also, perhaps, the one who knew best how to work around those limitations and still obtain a favorable outcome.

One thing caught her attention in what he’d just said…
“Is this where the Earth I just left would have ended up in, if I hadn’t managed to save it?” she asked
“It is.” the older god agreed, “It isn’t something we ever take pleasure in doing, but sadly, it is sometimes unavoidable.”
“So… the Purgatory… is a part of the Abyss, then?”
“It is.” it was Chaos who answered – it did pertain to his powers after all, “Like you’ve learned yourself, some powers can be destroyed permanently, others simply temporarily restrained. It’s a bit similar, thought on a larger scale, for worlds.”

“When they become Lost, worlds are tied to the Purgatory, as a measure to protect other worlds from their influence.” Death took over, “The Third and Fourth Circle gods who live in those worlds go with them, and sometimes, though far too rarely… It does happen that those worlds are healed of what made them Lost.”
“Generally, working to save their world when it has already been given up upon by us is enough to make those gods gain enough of a power boost that they raise to Second Circle.” Fate nodded toward another goddess, with short black-hair and familiar blue eyes – Shadow recognized Peace, the twin sister of War, “Or even First Circle in some case.”
Seeing that she was surprised, the calm goddess nodded, “Our world spent thousands of years stuck in a never-ending war. When my brother and I finally managed peace, we’d ascended along the way, realized our old gods were dead, or as good as… And that only us could take our world out of the Purgatory.”

“But some worlds,” Chaos said more somberly, “never change. The longer a world spends in the Purgatory, the deeper in it goes. Until it reaches the Abyss. And then there’s nothing.”
“And how was Lily Potter being sent to Purgatory something that made it possible for me to live?” she couldn’t help but wonder
Back when she’d ascended, she hadn't known much about bargains – but by now, she’d been a goddess for several millennia, and she understood well that bargains were all about give and take. She really didn’t see the point of sending her mother to Purgatory rather than simply on Death’s islands.

“Because she replaced someone from there.”
Shadow’s eyes widened.

“Your soul was one of those wild ones born in Purgatory.” Fate nodded, “You held my touch, but your life would have been one of endless suffering as the destiny you were promised to was all but impossible in a world lost like yours was.” she gave a soft smile, “But when born in the right world, suddenly, you had a chance to live…”
“But I was already born when my mother made her bargain, wasn’t I?” she couldn’t help but protest
“You forget that time between the mortal and immortal realm isn’t linear.” Death explained, “When she made her bargain, Lily was given a rare choice: she chose the soul of her child. From a certain perspective, it was a choice she’d already made… she just didn’t know it yet.”

“I took her through the Purgatory.” Fate said with a wistful smile, “We traveled around for what seemed like months, and she met countless other souls. But it was you she chose, as soon as she saw you.”
“It’s also why only you can save her.” Death explained, “She made a bargain with us, and paid the price. If we were to free her…”
“You would undo the bargain.” the goddess understood, “Harriet Potter would die as a baby, I would never ascend…” the simple idea was dizzying as she thought about all the things she’d lived through and accomplished over the years, “It seems I owe her my life twice over, given what my original fate was.”
“And if you manage to rescue her from the Purgatory,” Fate answered with a smile, “you’ll have paid that debt a thousand times over.”

¤.¤.¤

Shadow had taken over the body of her avatar, who was lying in sleep, hidden deep under the Moon Clan House in Konoha.
She’d been gone less than twenty years, so many of the people she’d known and grow up with were still there, though most were quite old – hanyou and other daiyoukai excepted. From there, traveling to Tetsu no Kuni was as easy as stepping through the teleportation torii Naruto, Inari and herself had designed a few decades ago.
There, she met with the country’s leader – Taishou Mifune, head of the Kuromori House. A black wolf daiyoukai, and more relevantly: the First Circle god of War, who’d broken his soul apart a long time ago, and given up his powers, not able to cope with the way some people could despise him and his powers.

He’d learned better, over the millennia – but his powers, stuck in the Purgatory, had been impossible for him to get back, as powerless as he’d made himself. Which was why Light had promised to help, when they’d met him, the former hitman founding himself quite understanding the second thoughts one could have about their vocation.
After a quick explanation about why it was Shadow, rather than Light, who was picking him up, the god was stepping foot back in the immortal realm for the first time in several more times longer than the young goddess with him had even lived.

And soon, Shadow and War were in front of the gigantic doors, made from a material none could put a word on, richly decorated and ornate with volutes and frescoes and symbols from every language in existence, and some that probably didn't exist yet, so tall they couldn’t see the top of them, and as large as several buildings.
“I left your mother’s soul with Mana, a daughter of Magic and the goddess in charge of the Lost World you were born in…” Fate explained, “Or rather, the Lost Galaxy.” she corrected herself, making Shadow’s eyes widen, “You should probably start to look there.”

Magic approached next, handing her a pendant, “Here.” a smile, “This is an enchanted echo of your mother’s soul.” she explained, “Time&Eternity and Death helped me create it. The pendant will always come back to you, and it’ll guide you.” then she turned toward War, “I know better than to offer you something like this, you should know the feeling of your soul better than anyone after all.” the blue-eyed god nodded solemnly
Time&Eternity approached them next.

“I know better than granting you an affinity for my powers like you already have with Fate or Magic.” he told the young goddess, who entirely agreed – she had more than enough dangerous affinities with both Chaos and Death after all
Still, a wave of cold, white, yet not unpleasant power shimmered around her.
“With this,” he told her, “you’ll find yourself when you need to.” a smile, “Who knows, if you succeed, more than one innocent life may be saved.”
Death and Chaos had stepped forward next, hugging her tightly.

Next to them, Peace had started by hitting War – throwing her fist in a way that proved she wasn’t a stranger to fighting, rather amusingly. Once done, she hugged her brother just as tightly, all the while whispering about how bull-headed and stupid he’d been.
Finally, the two of them were alone, in front of the large gates.

Green-gold eyes shared a glance with blue ones.
They pushed the door.

¤.¤.¤

Somehow, the door wasn’t merely needing physical force – no, Shadow and War could both feel a strange, searching feeling – coming up empty for the god, but finding what it was looking for in Shadow.
Merely pushing the door slightly ajar to let them pass made the goddess feel as she did after expanding too much godly power in the mortal realm, spent and ready to sleep for days or months.
No sooner had they slipped through, that they felt the door shut behind them with an ominous echo – and Shadow could feel herself getting cut from the Immortal Realm in a way she never had before.
Here, she realized, they truly were beyond their fellow gods’ help.

Around them – emptiness.
They were in the dark, yet somehow there was light enough to see that there wasn’t anything.
Still, War could sense something, and Shadow’s powers over souls let her feel that it was the pull of the other half of his soul he was sensing. Around her neck, the swirling sphere of white, dark green and violet was pulsing ever so slowing, pushing her toward the same direction.
They started to walk.

It was impossible to say how long they walked.
Here and there, things started to appear.
Remnants of ancient worlds, nexus of strange powers, all lost in the middle of nothingness.
From time to time, they stopped, and rested.

It was after the third rest, that they encountered their first enemies. Shapeless creatures, made from leftover corrupted powers, with only destruction as their aim. They were easily dealt with at first – but the deeper they went, the worst they became. Shadow tried not to think about what could be found near the Abyss, remembering all too well the fell feelings of Tartarus, and knowing the Abyss wouldn’t be any better.
Quite the contrary.
After about a week — or what felt like it, they passed near their first Lost World.

It appeared like a marble of several meters' diameter, painted with dark colors, surrounded by a see-through, shimmering barrier, and both gods instinctively knew that if they touched it, they would be sucked toward that world. They watched from afar, neither feeling the urge to enter, which probably meant neither Lily Potter nor War’s power dwelt there. But both felt fascinated because this – this was what Fate had described to them, what War had lived through once, thought never seen from the outside.
“They nearly destroyed their planet.” Adra mused, watching the blackened marble, streaked with the orange and red of what appeared to be gigantic storms of fire, “But they’re getting better.”
War nodded, “They’re at peace right now.” he confirmed, “Not enough survivors for war at first, but now…” he eyed the ring of what seemed to be spatial stations around the nearly dead planet, “Now they are genuinely at peace.”

They stayed a few days – or rather what amounted to days for them, and seemed to be years and decades in the reality marble. It was as they watched in wonder, that they met their first lost souls.
They were herded by two men – two gods, rather, who were surrounded by a few dozens of see-through souls that were soon pushed, encouragingly, toward the healing world.
“Oh,” one of the two gods mused, “new faces!”
“So, what are you doing in here?” the other wondered
“Looking for my mother.” Shadow answered first
“And my soul.” War completed
“Not the best place to misplace things.” one of the twin gods mused idly

The two gods were lost souls who had ascended millennia ago, they learned – and instead of leaving the Purgatory, they stayed. They were also, quite obviously, First Circle gods, just like them.
Lost and Found helped the souls from worlds that kept on falling through the Purgatory, down toward the Abyss – they lead them through newer world, less lost, who still had a chance to make it out, and in doing so, had somewhat become the counterparts to Death and Life, though their powers were very different.
The two traveling gods followed them on their journey for a few weeks – or maybe months or years.

They met other gods. Some were nearly faded after their world had fallen to the Abyss, and didn’t seem to have much sense left to their lives anymore, making Shadow understand what Peace had meant when she said the gods of her home world were dead. Others, like Lost and Found, had stumbled on a new calling in the Purgatory, and had no intention of leaving.
“And then there’s those two.” Found sighed
Those two – were two Second Circle gods that seemed both very similar and antithetic, one tied to Life, the other to Death, and loudly arguing with each other.
“They’ve been at it for three thousand years.” Lost added, “And before that, they spent a whole millennium brawling!”
The two brothers didn’t even notice them as the group passed them by – then left them behind.

¤.¤.¤

They walked by another world that seemed nearly healed – this one holding a single continent, nearly ten-meters wide from their perspective, floating on an ocean inside the reality marble, having clearly gone through a great climate change, if the skeletons of palm trees half-buried under the snow were to be believed.
It was there that Lost and Found left them, wishing them well on their quest, and going back to their occupation – not without warning them to beware of the Abyss monsters, as they called the creatures who had been attacking more and more often, and growing more and more grotesque.

There was something similar, though far more terrifying, between those monsters and the corrupted beings from Shadow’s birth world before it went through its apocalypse and renewal.
Finally, the two gods arrived near another reality marble.
This one was holding a whole galaxy – it was just as beautiful as the two first Lost Worlds they’d found, thought clearly, not as successful in its healing. Both Shadow and War immediately knew – that this was the world they had been looking for…
That was when they met the Abyss creature.

It was so tall it made the reality marble holding the galaxy, the largest one they’d encountered yet, as it appeared to be as tall as a building – appear small and trifling.
There was a malevolent aura around the creature, and it had no definite shape, looking somewhat like a feline – in as much as a feline could be as tall as to make a skyscraper look small, have a writhing mass of tentacles on its back in lieu of fur, and far too many eyes for what appeared to be its face.
Worse, Shadow could feel through both her Abyss and SoulArt that the thing was nothing more than an amalgamation of corrupted power, deteriorated souls and sheer will to exist.

The thing elicited in her a sort of primal fear she hadn’t ever felt as a goddess, and couldn't quite recall ever feeling as a mortal, except perhaps the first time she’d encountered dementors and learned of their nature.
An entity like that – the goddess feared that simply by trying to fight against it, she would end up being consumed alive, or worse, loosing herself in its terrifying, corrupting nature and become the very same monster she’d tried to fight.

Shadow and War stood side by side, both similarly worried by the creature that for now didn’t seem to even acknowledge their existence, slowly stepping back toward the reality marble that was their destination. The reality marble – that apparently was the focus of the creature, who was hurling attacks at it, both from sheer evil, and in a more physical way from the mass of tentacles on its back, and the sharp claws on its legs.
The marble was holding for now – but the gods had a feeling that this was how some of the remnants from old, destroyed Lost Worlds had come to be.
Finally, they were near enough to touch the reality marble – and the world swirled in a myriad of colors around them, and suddenly, they weren’t in the Purgatory anymore.

Or technically – they still were, but inside the reality marble – thought not quite yet inside the galaxy itself.
Not they were in a spiritual realm, similar to the dream realms of her previous world, and there was a goddess waiting for them.
“Welcome back, child.”
She had light violet eyes, shinning with love and pride, long hair in a darker, near black, violet shade – pointed ears that belied her seemingly human appearance, as did the double heart-beat Shadow could hear in her chest. Most remarkably, her aura was making the younger goddess feel like a child meeting her mother for the first time again after a long while.

“You are Mana.” War was the one to say, seeing that Shadow could quite voice anything right now
“I am.” the goddess agreed, before adding, tone a bit chiding, “And you are the one whose soul is bouncing all around my galaxy.”
War winced.
“I’m sorry.”
“You look like you’ve learned your lesson.” Mana pointed out, before making a gesture encompassing the surrounding space, “Besides, I’m not one to talk, am I?” there was deep sadness in her eyes, “Your powers didn’t help, but it’s the people I was charged to look after, who ended lost.”
“Which cannot be put entirely on your shoulders either,” Shadow pointed out, finally finding her voice back, “Free-will can do wondrous, but terrible things too.”

¤.¤.¤

“Indeed, young goddess.” a smile, “To think, this young innocent soul ended up a goddess herself.” a smile, “And now, you’re back for your mother.” a smile, “Love is one of the strongest forces in existence, isn’t it?”
“It really is.” Shadow agreed, thinking back about Love’ cheers as the world she’d recently saved had started to become a transcendental world – all for love, according to the goddess
Shadow herself thought that stubbornness had played a part too, but hadn’t dared to contradict the goddess.
“She’s chosen to incarnate in the galaxy.” Mana announced, not really surprising Shadow nor War, “I told her that it was dangerous… That if she died there, she would lose her memories.” a sigh, “She didn’t think you’d come, and she was still missing her husband…”

Shadow nodded.

She had hoped against it – but knew it was possible that Lily Potter had forgotten all about her, or her life – it had been several millennia after all, and inside the Purgatory at that. It didn’t change her intent to bring her back to Death’s Islands, and the Mortal Realms.
“Still…” Mana mused, eyes studying intently the other goddess, “You’ve… been given a blessing, haven’t you?”
“I have.” Shadow agreed, suddenly remembering Time&Eternity’s gift, “So that more than one innocent soul may be saved…” she remembered what the eldest god had said
Mana was clearly thinking, and quite intently at that.

“So many things have been lost over time in the galaxy…” the goddess in charge whispered in reminiscence, “Balance was broken, and my children have both grown obsessed with restoring it, yet have completely disregarded what balance truly means.” she sighed heavily, “The latest child touched by Fate has a far better chance to succeed his destiny than you ever had back then… But not before nearly destroying both himself, all that he held dear, and even the galaxy itself.”
“What can I do?” Shadow asked – this was familiar ground, after all

A world – and a Chosen One – to help.

Even if it was a whole galaxy, rather than only one planet.
Even if it meant plunging head first in the unknown, without Luck’s briefing about the world she was heading into, or her brother’s influence on ChaosGame helping her along with quests, and his own hand in binding her soul to let her incarnate in the mortal realm.
“Reform the users of my powers enough before the Chosen One has to bring balance back.” Mana said, “Remind them that there is no light without shadows and no shadows without light.” a smile, her powers swirling gently around the other goddess, “And I’ll maybe even be able to send some help along the way, if you let me interfere a bit with your powers.” a wink, “After all, reasonable interference is a guideline few people really cares about in the Purgatory, and the only reason I haven’t interfered more myself is that I feared my powers wouldn’t have brought anything but more violence.” a self-deprecating smile, “I would only make those children’s gifts stronger…”

“Which would have only ended in more bloodshed.” War agreed, “Especially with my powers meddling around.”
The three deities had spent some time planning after that, Mana sharing a bit more about her galaxy, though there was much Shadow and War would understand only once they’d stepped into the mortal realm.
None of them really knew how Time&Eternity’s blessing would work, but according to Mana’s guess, it would either send the young goddess in an era where the unbalance wasn’t yet as bad, and when she would be provided the opportunity to learn about it all, or maybe someone would be brought back from the near future, in order to prevent the series of events that would lead to the near genocide of any power users in the galaxy.

Or maybe something entirely different…

¤.¤.¤

It was the first time Shadow was the one doing the binding on her soul, and it was, perhaps, even worse than when Chaos did it – maybe because it was her own soul, or maybe because she wasn’t as used to messing with immortal souls as her brother was, she couldn’t tell.
A familiar shade of emerald green appeared – and not quite familiar words.

Well, she mused…
Things weren’t as bad as they could have been, but they certainly weren’t as good either. She let her powers spread a bit, entwining with War’s soul by her side – this, she noted, was far easier, given that the other god didn’t need to have his soul bound like her own. There was a moment of surprise from him, as it was the first time he saw the Game System – no matter how different this iteration of it was from Chaos’ usual one.
Hearing a last call of Mana wishing her good luck, the world turned dark around her – she lost herself in a whirlwind of confusing emotion…

And Arya Lunika took her first breath.
