It was pointless, really, to fight over a broken teacup, although it wasn't really about the teacup. Sirius dropped his cup, and then they just started arguing, all the recent events just made both of them snap. It had been a rough year, and they had been fighting a lot, so this was nothing new. Usually, it started with something silly and stupid like a tea cup falling on the floor or something left untied, something that didn't really matter.
Especially the events of the past few months had taken a toll on them, they were trying to learn to live again basically. Their life has changed a lot. They now had Harry to take care of, and Sirius' trials were still going on, they were trying to prove that Sirius wasn't the one who betrayed James and Lily. They were mostly over by now, though, thankfully.
Sirius had been locked up in Azkaban for a few months right after that Halloween, and Harry had been taken to the Dursleys. When they had gotten the trials going on at the ministry to prove that Sirius wasn't guilty, they also started to fight to get Harry to live with them and not with the Dursleys, who Remus now knew were horrible. It had taken about a year when they finally got harry to live with them, that had been two months ago now.
“Sirius just listen to me this once.”
“I'm fucking listening!” He said, sitting down on a chair, running a hand through his hair, looking at Remus.
“Don't raise your voice at me.” He said, making Sirius roll his eyes at him, Remus raised his eyebrows. “Sirius -”
“I'm tired of this.” He said, getting up from the chair. “So fucking tired.” He whispered, going to grab his leather jacket that was hanging by the door.
“Sirius you can't just leave, we have to talk-” He sighed, but Sirius didn't even glance at him before he closed the door. He leaned back in his chair, cursing under his breath, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was just about to get up and go clean the shattered pieces when he heard a small voice coming from the stairs.
“Moony?”
He sighed, turning around in his chair. “Hey cub.” He said gently, feeling bad for waking Harry up. He glanced at the clock on the wall, seeing it was almost midnight.
Harry didn't say anything; he just stood at the foot of the stairs, clearly upset. He got up from the chair, walking over to Harry and crouching down in front of him.
“A-are you m-mad at me.” Harry whispered shyly, not looking at Remus, who shook his head, a little taken aback.
“No, no, no, I'm not mad at you, little one.” Remus said, brushing hair out of his eyes. “No one's mad at you.” Remus scooped Harry up in his arms, walking to the living room and sitting down on the couch with Harry on his lap.
“But you and padfoot were yelling.” He whispered, rubbing his eyes, before looking at Remus.
“Did that wake you up?” He asked and Harry nodded. “I'm sorry, baby, wasn't your fault, it's okay and nothing bad happened, okay?”
“Where's-?” Harry started with tears collecting in his eyes as he looked around, seeing a shattered teacup and that Sirius wasn't anywhere. “Where's padfoot?” He asked quietly, looking up at Remus.
“Don't worry, cub, he just went out for a little while.”
“Left us?” Harry whispered, a tear falling down as he thought about it. Remus was quick to wipe his tears away and shush him.
“No no baby, he didn't leave us, he could never ever do that, okay? He would never do that to you.” Or me, I hope, he thought, wiping more of the tears away from Harry's face. “I promise, baby, pads would never ever leave you, us. He'll come back, I promise.” He just hoped he wouldn't have to break that promise.
Harry nodded, sniffling sadly, leaning his head against Remus' chest. He kissed Harry's head, rubbing his side. “wanna go back to bed?” He whispered after a while, noticing Harry started dozing off.
“But padfoot?” He asked, lifting his head to look at Remus, who was trying so hard not to cry. He didn't know what to answer to him now, he didn't know where Sirius had gone off to, he didn't know what he went to do and when he was coming back, if he was. “An' you.”
“What about me, baby?” He asked, gently brushing the hair away from his face, seeing the scar on his forehead.
“Need you, an' pads.” He looked up, blinking away tears, before answering the boy.
“I'm here, Haz.” He whispered. “And Sirius is coming home, we won't leave you, ever, I promise. Pads will come back, don't worry your little head with it.” He said, and Harry nodded. “Let's head up to bed, okay? It's really late, isn't it?”
Harry nodded slightly, and Remus stood up, going to grab his wand from the kitchen, quickly cleaning up the tea cup, before walking up the stairs to Harry's bedroom. He tucked Harry back into bed, making sure his teddy was cuddled up to him. Remus sat down on the floor, not wanting to leave Harry alone now.
“Don't wanna be alone.” Harry whispered, looking at Remus, who smiled, brushing his hair away.
“Don't have to.” He said, and Harry nodded. “I'll be here, the whole night if you want me to, won't go anywhere, I promise.”
“Stay here?” He asked, blinking up at him.
“I will.” He smiled and Harry nodded, closing his eyes. “Goodnight, cub.” He whispered softly, kissing his forehead. “I love you so much.” He said, and Harry mumbled something in response, cracking his eyes open for a moment, before closing them again, making Remus smile. He started whispering a story to him, hoping he'd fall asleep quickly, which he did. “I'll be right back, baby.” He whispered, even though Harry was sleeping. He got up from the floor, going to the hallway right outside of Harry's bedroom.
He slid down the wall to sit on the floor, running his hands down his face, trying to prevent the tears. He hadn't even thought about that much of Sirius leaving until Harry asked if he left them. Even though he knew Sirius would never do that, maybe to him, but not to Harry. Never.
Now that he thought about it, he couldn't help but cry, the tears just fell down without permission and wouldn't stop. He hit his head to his knees, he tried to be quiet in hopes of not waking Harry up again. He bit his lip to quiet down the sobs leaving from him.
He didn't know how long he sat there in the hallway until he heard their front door open, and someone soon walking up the stairs. He lifted his head, looking up at Sirius, who Sat down cross legged across from him on the floor.
Sirius looked like he had been crying, his eyes were bloodshot and the tear tracks were clear on his face. But now that Remus thought about it, he probably didn't look any better. “Remus.” Sirius whispered, breaking the silence. “I'm sorry, for shouting at you, and for interrupting you and for leaving and breaking the cup, Remus, I'm just sorry.”
Remus nodded. “I'm sorry too.” He whispered, looking at him. “We really gotta start talking to sort out our problems. And not just wait for it to blow up like this.” He said, wiping his eyes.
“Yeah.” Sirius breathed out, nodding. “why're you sitting out here?” He asked, nodding towards the door that led to Harry's bedroom, seeing that it was slightly ajar.
“Had to put Harry back to sleep.” He said. “He woke up to us fighting and just got scared.” He said, the tears starting to fill his eyes again. “He thought that- that you had left, like for good, and wouldn't come back.” He said, reaching his shaky hand to wipe away the tears.
“And I tried to tell him that you'd never do that and that you'd come back. That he doesn't have to worry about either of us leaving.” He said, his breathing starting to catch up in his throat. “But then I started thinking t-that-"
“No, no Rem, no.” Sirius whispered, crawling over to the other side of the hall to wrap his arms around Remus, who started to sob into his chest.
“I-i know you w-wouldn't leave harry, but I just g-got scared that maybe you finally just had enough of m-me.” He stuttered out, breaking Sirius' heart at the same time.
“No Remus, love, I could never ever leave you.” He whispered, kissing Remus' head. “I'm so sorry, so sorry for making you feel like that.” He said, and Remus nodded just a little. “Look at me, Remus, please.” He said, when both of them had calmed down a little. Remus did, letting Sirius wipe away his tears.
“I am never going to leave you.” He said, and Remus nodded. “Never, okay? No matter how much we fight or what happens, I could never leave you or Harry, and I need you to really believe me.”
“I believe you.” He whispered, and Remus smiled just slightly, although there were tears in his eyes.
“I hope you won't leave your stupid husband either.”
“I won't.” Remus whispered, smiling slightly. "Even if he's a bit stupid." Sirius chuckled, kissing his head. Remus leaned his head against Sirius' shoulder, who rested his head on top of Remus'.
“I love you, moons.”
“I love you too.” He whispered, feeling Sirius kiss his head. “Let's talk about this later because we really have to.”
Sirius nodded. “Tomorrow, yeah? When it's not the middle of the night.” It was Remus' turn to nod. “Should we head to bed?” He asked, but Remus shook his head.
“I promised Harry that he won't be alone.” He said, and Sirius hummed. “That I'd stay with him for the night.”
“Then we'll stay.”
They both got up from the floor, going to Harry's bedroom who, opened his eyes just slightly. “Padfoot.” He mumbled, as both of them came into the room, and walked over to his bed. “Stay.” He whispered, before closing his eyes.
“We'll stay with you, don't worry, pup.” He whispered. “Just go back to sleep.” He said, leaning down to kiss his forehead.
After making sure harry had fallen asleep again, neither of them had the heart to leave, so after a while, they both fell asleep, Sirius sitting on the floor with his back to the wall that was opposite of Harry's bed while Remus had his head on his lap. A bit weird, yes, but a promise was a promise, so they stayed there.
