The Wizengamot (Revival)
Summary
(This is only for Revival, and does not follow the canon) This is written alongside Revival, my other story. If you haven't read that, then this has no purpose, though I suggest you check out the story. This details the current seating on the Wizengamot and how it was created in my story, and is mostly a supporting document.

Date written: May 12th, 2023

A/n: So FFnet nor Ao3 allows colors or highlighted text, so despite what it says below, colors are not displayed. This was originally made for myself to keep track of names and members, along with the Wizengamot, however, I thought it would be beneficial to allow you to see how the Wizengamot is layed out.

This will be updated via the log at the bottom, but the upper portion will remain the same.

Hope this helps those who are reading my fic, and feel free to post questions in the comments. For those with questions, I may post a following page responding to those the best I can.

A/n 2: Some of the families are not canon, but I have made it so for a reason. Along with this, I have made the time of Merlin and King Arthur back further. The school of Hogwarts is also older, approximately two hundred years older than the Wizard’s council.

Out of (117) Votes, only (103) are currently active.

  • Members like Amelia Bones, Sirius Black, and Albus Dumbledore, hold more votes for various positions, or due to being a proxy or regent for a family.
  • Active Votes are those that currently have a seat and are usable. Votes that are inactive are automatically assumed to be abstained, leaving the votes uncasted.
  • Active votes are not required to be used, and may be abstained if the Lord, Lady, or Regent/Proxy feels like it is the better choice. For example, the Chief Warlock abstains from voting in criminal matters in most circumstances.
  • House Weasley does not sit in their seat after a bad business deal with House Malfoy.
  • House Prewitt is still active, but as the Heir has not accepted his position, he does not sit in the Wizengamot, nor is there a Proxy assigned.
  • House Selwyn and House LeStrange have living lords. However, all members have been convicted of High Crimes against the magical population, and are currently in Azkaban. By the Ancient Laws, neither house is allowed to sit in their seat on the Wizengamot. With no heirs, the families may die out.
  • House Travers has no free Heir, the only member living being incarcerated in Azkaban for high crimes. The Lord has passed from old age, and like House Selwyn and LeStrange, may die out due to no known blood descendants.

Titles:

  • The Sacred 28 contains the families with the title Ancient. To earn this title, the family must be able to trace their lineage back further than (500) years in the British Isles. Each of the levels may not have more than (7) families, and may not exceed (21) in total. The original Sacred 28 has changed, as families have died out over the years. Above is only the current layout of the Wizengamot.
  • To have a title labeled Most Ancient, the family must be able to trace their line back more than a (1000) years. Again, only (7) families may have this title, and they must be of Most Noble Standing. Families may ascend if another is labeled as Extinct.
  • For families with the title of Ancient or greater, they must have no magical descendants for (500) years in order to lose their standing and be labeled Extinct. When this occurs, the next family in line ascends to the position opened, their position is filled by the next in line for it.
  • In the history of the Wizengamot, this has only occurred twice. The first was when House Alexander died out, losing its title of Ancient and Noble. House MacMillan replaced them, allowing House Flint to become an Ancient House. The second occurrence was when House Hatt died out, losing its status as an Ancient House. They were replaced by House Ogden, who was at the time, the oldest house in line to earn the title of Ancient.
  • To earn the titles Noble or Most Noble, Your family must have contributed to the Wizarding world in a major way. For example, House Dumbledore was elevated to the standing Noble for the defeat of the Dark Lord Grindelwald. To earn Most Noble, you must have the title Noble, and do something of similar status. The Most Ancient and Most Noble families all assisted in the creation of the International Statute of Secrecy and were immediately granted this title.
  • Noble families, with no other titles, are not part of the Sacred 28. However, they have done something notable, and have an elevated status in the Wizengamot. Noble families may lose their title if the Wizengamot votes on it, or after (50) years with no living members in the family.
  • Some families used to have standing, like House Le Fay and House Pendragon, but have been extinct, or have no members for (500) years.
  • The founders of Hogwarts existed before the Wizengamot, but were considered to all be Noble families, as such, they are all labeled Extinct houses, and no longer have an official standing within the Wizengamot.
  • (Applies to Harry only) No one family line may hold the Lordship to (2) Most Ancient and Most Noble families for more than a single generation. For each Lordship, there must be an individual wife, as the family magics are not to mix for a long period of time. This is one of the Ancient Laws written by Merlin.
  • The Peverell family has been extinct, however, as the last Lord Peverell, Ignotus Peverell, requested from the Wizengamot, the Potters were granted indefinite proxy. Until the Potter family dies out, the Peverell Family lives on.

The Wizard’s Council and the creation of the Wizengamot:

The Wizard’s Council was created by Merlin  before the founding of the Statute of Secrecy. Headed by Arthur Pendragon and Merlin, the main responsibility was to prevent the magical communities from mass muggle killings, and to stop rising Dark Lords. At the time, they had the seven most prominent families, all of whom were known for their family’s age and power, to work together to protect the nation from invading magical people, or other magical beings, namely the goblins. This council was also responsible for gathering other nations when they finalized the Statute of Secrecy in 614 A.D.

The seven families who assisted in this great task were granted the title Most Ancient and Most Noble by Arthur Pendragon, and given a set of laws that were meant to allow the magical community to run without the muggle community knowing. This allowed minimal contact with the muggles, protecting both sides. Arthur Pendragon died in 624 A.D, and the last order was to end the Wizard’s council, and create something more, something that could be allowed to expand.

Merlin decided he would be hands off in this, and refused to be a part of guiding the future governing body. He did, however, agree to write a list of ancient laws, laws that the new governing body could not violate. It was 637 A.D when the seven families agreed on the new laws, and a new name for the body. Merlin performed the rites, and oversaw the seven families swearing the new oath of leadership, thus creating the Wizengamot.

This was Merlin’s last act, before vanishing. According to history, it is unknown if he has died, or hidden himself from the magical world, but it is known that this was the last time he was seen.

In 1154 A.D. The magical population had grown to a point where the now expanded twenty one families were no longer capable of managing life. They had spent years in discussion, and finally agreed on creating what would become the Ministry of magic. The Ministry would become an executive body, enforcing both the Statute of Secrecy, and enforcing the laws that had been passed, while the Wizengamot would alter itself into a judicial body, creating laws and sentencing criminals. The Ministry would also be granted seats on the Wizengamot, allowing them a voice in the laws passed.

Later, other seats would be added for those who were elected into the body, allowing the people to vote in their government.

Notes:

  • Peter Pettigrew’s Order of Merlin has already been removed from the count
