Prologue

His eyes were piercing silver. His lips were a muted pink. His hair was a charming, striking blond.

His eyes were silver. Lips muted pink. Hair striking blond.

Harry repeated every detail in his mind as he watched the fire behind the eyes of Draco Malfoy dim. He inscribed every detail into his mind. Every sharp curve. Every loving glance. Every crooked smirk, every warm smile that contrasted his once cold, bitter disposition.

He couldn’t forget. He couldn’t ever forget what Malfoy, whom his passion burned for like the fires of which a phoenix is reborn from, looked like, acted like. But, unlike the phoenix, Malfoy couldn’t, wouldn’t come back. No matter how hard he wished for it. Because losing him, even for the few minutes that it has been, was a pain worse than any Unforgivable Curse.

Malfoy, as far as Harry knew, never loved him back. But the unimaginable, excruciating pain tore through him as if he had lost a lifelong partner. Looking into his eyes, which used to be so full of strong emotion, now dim, crushed him. His dulling pink lips destroyed him. And the stop of his gentle heartbeat broke him.

Nothing else existed within this moment. The only sounds were his uncontrollable sobs that echoed throughout the ruins of the battle.

There was no Harry Potter now. Not without Draco Malfoy.
