Americana Breakfast

‘How did I get here?’ Hermione thought as she stared at Draco’s ceiling. It was hard to believe a few short weeks ago she had the same thought but for different reasons.

Spending the night with Draco had been incredible. Not since staying up late with Ginny at the Burrow had she shared so many of her deepest thoughts and desires with someone. And Draco to his credit held nothing back and seemed to be completely open with her admitting some of his fears and mishaps.

She rolled over to see him sitting up wearing a pair of dark framed glasses reading over a positions journal. “Morning sleepy.” He said smirking at her. Her heart did a little back flip seeing him sit there with just a pair of navy joggers looking so relaxed.

“Hi” she said smiling up at him. “Breakfast?” She asked starting to stretch and sit up.

“Sure.” He folding the journal taking off his glasses. “Here or out?”

“Hmmm…how about here? I didn’t know you wore glasses.” She said teasingly.

“All a part of the mystery of me.” He said standing up and heading towards the door holding out his hand.

They headed downstairs to the kitchen. Hermione was surprised by its homey feel she expect something sleek and modern. Instead the cabinets were a shade of light blue and counters were butcher block. French doors were on the side of the room leading out to a small charming garden currently covered in frost. Draco quickly got to work warming the kettle for tea and making a batter.

“Ok what can I do?” She said standing next to him.

“How about you wash some berries for these waffles?” He said motioning with his head towards the icebox. With a wave of his hand a radio started to life and Americana music came tumbling out of the small box.

“My roommate in Chicago was from Minnesota.” He said with a smile and a shrug.

“I can’t picture you with roommates.” She said giggling.

“What about Hogwarts!?” He protested with a laugh.

“Well yeah but like grown-up Draco with roommates seems weird.” She said.

“Alright.” He laughed. “I started on my own but a guy from my program had his apartment building sold and they were going to raise the rent so he needed and place and I had a spare bedroom. Will was your good old American boy next door. Obsessed with American football and shitty beer but he was a good guy. Taught me a lot.”

“Interesting. Do you keep in touch?”

“Oh yeah I visit him and his wife Anisha every year around their thanksgiving holiday. I can’t turn down their turkey dinner. They’d love you. Well, they already know a bit about you from what I’ve told them, but they would love to meet you. Will has been hounding me for years about when I’d finally make a move.” He shook his head laughing.

“Well I would love to meet them too.” She said matter of factly handing the berries over and watching him take the last waffle out of the iron and set it on a plate. She couldn’t help but do an internal happy dance to hear he had told his other friends about her. In the background a woman sang about a slow burn and Hermione couldn’t help but laugh to herself about the relevance.

“This is one of my favorites” he said as she started to hum along.

He sat their plates at the large island in the center of the room and Hermione began pouring the tea.

They sat and ate and laughed as Draco told her about the trouble he got into with Will in America. Hermione concluded it was probably a good thing that he found Anisha and Draco agreed.

Shortly after Hermione made her way home to shower and take care of her house. She had a letter from Ginny demanding a lunch date that week to go over her blooming relationship and she laughed at her friend’s inability handle staying out of the loop. She sent her reply and began organizing some of the law books from her office taking the afternoon to decompress.
