Professor Umbridge

It was the next day, afternoon. They were in the middle of the defense against the dark arts lesson. Umbridge had called Jason, Reyna and Frank to the front of the class. She told them to demonstrate their powers.

Jason levitated 10 inches away from the floor. Frank knew that in this country people who can turn into animals are called animagus and they need a license. Hecate had taught them all that.

“Well, you see,” said Frank. “My power only works in a life threatening situation.”

“As does mine,” said Reyna. This wasn’t a lie.

“What would be a life threatening situation?” asked Umbridge. “You are perfectly safe here. There is no way to show your powers then, is there?” There was a muscle working in her jaw as she tried to keep a forced smile.

“But what are your powers?” she asked.

“I can share my strength,” said Reyna, finding no point in lying.

“What does that imply?” Umbridge asked, sickeningly sweetly. “Can you give me a theoretical example?”

“Theoretically, I could enhance someone else’s powers. I would get backlash later though.” Reyna explained trying not to kill Umbridge for her questions.

“What about you, dear?” she asked Frank in the same sickening voice.

“Theoretically, I could make a battle plan in the middle of a fight,” he said. It wasn’t a lie, just not the whole truth. The Zhang family gift wasn’t something you wanted Umbridge to know about.

“Why would you be in a fight?” asked Umbridge. “Are you regularly fighting at your school? Who do you fight? Each other?”

“No one,” Jason interrupted. “That is why Frank said theoretically.”

“Well I should hope so,” said Umbridge.

“Excuse me,” said Hermione. “This is defense against the dark arts. We have this lesson to protect ourselves from evil wizards and witches. Why do you hope we don’t fight?”

“Miss Granger, you are not to speak out of turn.”

Hermione put her hand up but Umbridge ignored her and started writing on the black board. The demigods went back to their seats.

“Aren’t we going to use magic?” asked Hermione after seeing the things Umbridge wrote. They were all about the theoretical uses of magic.

“Why would you be using magic? Is it not enough to learn the theory?”

“This class is for using magic to defend ourselves from Voldemort and his followers!” exclaimed Harry.

“You-know-who is not back, darling,” said Umbridge, struggling to keep her fake smile.

“He is!” Harry argued.

“Detention! My office at 7 o’clock!” Umbridge yelled.

Harry was furious. He’d gotten detention for simply telling the truth. He was being called a liar for no reason.
