Four small moments in time when Lena appreciates seeing Kara hold their daughter in her arms.
Note
This has been in my wip folder for sooo long. I decided to use some downtime I have while stitches on my back heal to finally finish it. Hope you enjoy!Title from the song Two by Sleeping At Last.

“Kara, we don’t need any more cookies. Put those back.”

Lena bites back a smile when she sees Kara’s pout from the other side of the grocery aisle. She reaches into their shopping cart to grab the aforementioned cookies and holds them up for her wife to put them back on the shelf. Kara grumbles as she does so.

“But those are my favorite kind.”

Lena snags a pack of multigrain crackers and adds them to the cart. “We have two packs at home already, love.”

Kara sighs dramatically and starts pushing their cart alongside Lena as she grabs a few more items from their list. As they turn the corner into the dairy section Kara is all smiles again. Lena peruses the yogurt section for her and Kara’s favorite flavors.

“You know, I love this baby carrier.” Kara says, rubbing her hand along the back of the baby bjorn where Edith is snug and secure against Kara’s chest.

Lena makes her selection and then turns her smile toward her wife and baby. Kara is smiling fondly at the head of dark brown hair peeking out from the carrier. Edith is sound asleep where she lays against Kara’s chest, mouth slightly agape and small fingers clenched into the collar of Kara’s button down shirt. Lena watches Kara lean down to press a kiss to Edith’s forehead. At two months old, Edith is still pretty much oblivious to the world and sleeps most of the day. A few gentle kisses to her forehead don’t phase her.

They continue shopping, heading toward the frozen section.

“I love seeing you wear it.” Lena admits.

One blonde eyebrow raises in question. “Really?”

“Mhm.” Lena hums in affirmation, raking her eyes up and down Kara’s body. Her wife looks damn good in her dark blue button down and burgundy chinos. Lena drops her voice to a whisper that only someone with super hearing can hear. “You’re a milf.”

Kara blushes hard at the comment, looking around the aisle to see if anyone else possibly heard her wife just call her a milf in public. “Lena!” she breathes.

Lena just shrugs and stops to look at the frozen fruit options. “What can I say, you make motherhood look sexy.”

Kara chuckles softly, blush still blazing on her cheeks. “Thank you, honey.”

She goes back to rubbing Edith’s back through the carrier while waiting for Lena to make her fruit decision. Edith rubs her cheek against her chest and makes the smallest noise as her eyes slowly blink open. Kara gazes into eyes that match hers exactly.

“Did you have a good nap, inah?” Kara smiles, running her finger softly over Edith’s brow.

Edith settles so she can look at Kara from the carrier, content in the warmth provided from her mother. Her little fist clenches and unclenches in the material of Kara’s shirt. Kara presses more soft kisses to her forehead as she follows Lena around the store. They’ve made their way to the bakery aisle now, and Lena is eyeing the way Kara is looking at the freshly baked donuts when they hear a soft gasp beside them.

“Oh my heavens, she is just beautiful.”

Lena and Kara both turn to find an older woman with a cart nearby, hand on her chest as she looks at Edith in her carrier. Lena can sense the woman has already fallen in love with Edith in one look. She can relate.

Kara beams like the proud mother she is, turning slightly to angle Edith toward the woman. “Thank you, ma’am.”

“How old?” the woman asks quietly.

“She turned two months old a few days ago.” Lena offers with a fond smile. Edith chooses that moment to let out the cutest baby yawn and the woman coos at the sight.

The woman looks thoughtful for a second. “She’s doing well being out and about so young.”

Lena steps closer to Kara and rubs a hand up and down Kara’s back. “It’s this one’s charm that keeps her so calm. Edith loves being pressed to Kara’s chest.” Lena smiles when she sees Kara preen a little at the comment.

“Well, you three make a beautiful family. Best of luck to you in the future.” the woman offers with a wave as she starts toward the checkout.

Lena chuckles when the woman is out of earshot. “Do you think she’s gonna realize she just met Supergirl and Lena Luthor’s baby in the grocery store?”

“Maybe, but I think she enjoyed seeing this little bundle of joy regardless of who her mothers are.”

Lena presses a quick kiss to Kara’s cheek. “Me too. Now, we need to go to the produce section before we leave. I’m almost out of kale.”

She giggles at Kara’s playful groan. When they finally make it to the checkout lane, Lena isn’t even mad when she sees the cookies Kara snuck in their cart again.

“Hello my darlings, I’m home.” Lena announces as she steps through the door. She’s quick to discard her coat and heels, impatient to see her family after so many hours away from them.

“In here, sweetie.” she hears Kara say softly as she rounds the corner into the living room. Just like the Grinch, her heart grows three sizes when she sees her wife and baby.

Kara’s long frame is sprawled over their couch, the spitting image of relaxation. Her bottom half is wrapped snug in a thick blanket, one hand propped behind her head on a pillow. Lena admires the way her bicep strains against her long sleeve shirt a moment, because well, she’s only human. Kara’s other hand is resting gently against the blanket covering half of her chest, right over Edith’s back as the baby lays awake on top of her. Edith’s eyes are focused on the figures on the TV, which Lena thinks is a documentary about the deep ocean, her favorite pacifier in her mouth.

“Are you two comfy?” Lena giggles, making her way toward the couch.

Kara’s face scrunches up cutely. “Very comfy. Come join us.”

Lena sits down on the carpet by Kara’s head, leaning to rest her temple against Kara’s warm shoulder. Edith immediately focuses on her as she sits. She watches as Edith reaches a small hand out toward her face and offers her daughter a finger to grasp onto. She runs her thumb along the soft skin on the back of her hand as Edith turns her attention to the TV again.

“Adorable.” Kara sighs dreamily.

Lena hums, gazing at Kara from her position on the floor. “How was your day, darling?”

“Oh, it was great. After you left for work we went for a little walk in the park, saw the ducks. Then we came home for a much needed nap, for both of us. We’ve just been chilling out at home since then. This one did not enjoy doing tummy time on her play mat, but she did so well Lena. Set a new tummy time record.”

Lena gasps happily at the news, softly shaking Edith’s fist with her finger. “You did?” she says to Edith, who focuses on her mother again. “Good job baby girl!”

Edith hums softly behind her pacifier at the praise, and Lena can tell she’s smiling behind the soft blue material. Kara chuckles at the sight.

“I think we got really lucky with this one, babe. She’s such a chill, happy baby.”

Lena gives her wife some side eye. “Not so much when she’s hungry though. Wonder where she gets that from?”

Kara holds up a hand in surrender. “I plead the fifth.”

“Smart decision.” Lena chuckles, getting up after placing a soft kiss to both of her girls’ foreheads. “I’m gonna get changed into something comfy and then we can start on dinner.”

Lena changes quickly into a pair of soft leggings and one of Kara’s (a.k.a. now Lena’s) well worn National City University sweatshirts. She forgoes a bra for extra comfort and throws her hair into a messy bun before making her way back to the living room. As soon as she makes eye contact with Kara, her wife raises a finger to her lips in a shushing motion. In the short time Lena was in their bedroom Edith had fallen asleep on Kara’s chest.

“Let me get her rocker swing.” Lena mutters under her breath softly.

Kara uses her floating ability to put Edith in her swing with only minimal disgruntled movements from the baby. They settle her favorite blanket over her before leaving her to nap while they make dinner.

Once in the kitchen, Lena feels Kara’s arms snake around her waist. She lets herself be pulled back into Kara’s chest eagerly, relishing the attention her wife is giving her.

“Don’t worry babe, I didn’t forget about your cuddle time.” Kara whispers, placing a few kisses to the nape on Lena’s neck.

They stand in content silence for a few minutes, simply enjoying each other’s embrace. Lena feels a smile form on Kara’s lips against the back of her neck.

“Edith loves being against my chest. Wonder where she gets that from?” Kara says, echoing Lena’s words from earlier.

With a roll of her eyes and a smile, Lena turns in Kara’s arms to burrow her face into her wife’s chest.

“I plead the fifth.”

Lena's eyes flutter open to the view of her and Kara's darkened bedroom. At first she thinks she woke up randomly of her own accord, which is not unusual. Even before adding a baby to the mix Lena would frequently wake up in the middle of the night. Her therapist believes it's a remnant of her life before Kara, when the fear of Lex's goons coming for her during the night with no reassurance of Supergirl being nearby was overwhelming. But she can feel Kara's body heat warming up their blankets behind her and hear her wife’s soft snores in her ear. She's safe now, she knows that as an indisputable fact.

Lena's eyes focus on her alarm clock, glowing back at her in red numbers 3:47am. Movement catches her eye on the state of the art baby monitor Lena created, and suddenly Lena realizes she was woken by Edith. Two soft cries break over the speaker.

Before Lena can move to get out of bed she hears Kara's snoring stop suddenly and knows her wife is awake.

“I got her.” Kara murmurs, softly yawning as she throws the blankets back. “It's my turn for a feeding. Go back to sleep, love.”

Lena rolls over just as Kara leans to kiss her forehead softly. She grabs Kara's hand over the blankets as she prepares to make the short trip down the hall to Edith’s nursery.

“Let me know if you need me.” Lena whispers. She pulls the blankets closer to keep Kara's body heat from escaping them.

“Of course.” Kara smiles before softly padding out of the bedroom.

Lena rolls back over to look at the baby monitor feed. She watches as Kara comes into view, hovering over Edith and reaching a hand into the crib to stroke their daughter's cheek.

Inah, mama's here.”

Lena smiles softly into the blankets. She loves hearing Kara speak to Edith. Loves hearing her speak Kryptonian and sing Kryptonian lullabies so Edith can grow up hearing the tongue of her heritage.

Lena's eyes slip closed before she knows it, the sound of Kara singing softly coming through the baby monitor. She falls asleep again easily.

When she wakes up the next time, she sees from her alarm clock that it's about an hour after she fell asleep. Both the bed beside her and Edith’s crib are empty. With a frown Lena gets up to investigate why.

She pads quietly down the hallway toward the nursery. The door is left ajar and the soft light of the lamp is creeping out of the room. When Lena enters the nursery she instantly finds an adorable sight.

Kara is passed out on the recliner, mouth hanging open slightly as she snores away. The recliner is pushed all the way back to a practically flat position. Kara’s sleep shirt is in a pile on the floor, leaving her in a sports bra with a blanket covering her from the lap down. Edith is wrapped snuggly in Kara's arms fast asleep.

Lena leans against the doorframe and just takes in the image of her little family for a few minutes. Edith is already three months old. It seems like yesterday she was just giving birth to her. Time is moving so quickly that Lena has to make herself slow down and enjoy these little moments while she still has them.

She makes her way over to the recliner. Edith looks content with her face in Kara's neck and her little fist secure around Kara's bra strap. Lena doesn't have the heart to try and pry Edith out of her hold or wake up her wife. Instead, she pulls the edge of the blanket up until both of her girls are covered.

“How did I get so lucky?” she whispers to herself before heading back to her bedroom for a few more hours of sleep.

A month later is when Kara declares that game night needs to return to the Luthor-Danvers household. They were the usual host of the weekly tradition, but had passed the torch to Alex and Kelly once Edith was born. They’ve only gone to a few game nights in recent weeks, slowly easing back in, and they felt like now was a good time to try getting back to weekly hang outs with their friends. At four months old Edith was starting to really come into her personality, giggling and smiling when she sees her mommies and getting better at being held by other people. They're hopeful that she'll be okay with everyone around.

Kara goes all out for the return to tradition, buying way too many snacks and not one, but three new games for their collection. Lena orders from everyone's favorite pizza joint and spontaneously whips up a batch of cupcakes while Edith is down for a full-belly induced nap.

Everyone starts trickling in, exchanging hugs and cooing over Edith who loves the attention. Esme immediately wants to hold her baby cousin, which Kara helps her do while the food is delivered and the first game of the night is decided.

Lena didn't realize how much she missed having her chosen family around. Being new parents definitely sucked her and Kara in, and it took some major adjustments to their everyday lives. With Edith growing and advancing well they were able to settle into their routines a little easier over the past month.

She enjoys playing a few games (she still wipes the floor with trivia), chatting with Nia about her new foray into fashion journalism, and even indulges in a glass of scotch with Alex. By the time the pizzas are gone and they're pulling out the Monopoly board for the final game of the night, Lena spies Edith rubbing her eyes from her seat in Alex's lap. That adorable pout that rivals Kara's is forming on her face as well.

Lena makes her way over to Alex with a smile, eager to have Edith in her arms again. “It's bedtime for this one.” she says, gently scooping Edith up when chubby arms reach for her. Alex frowns but makes no objection to her niece being taken from her.

Kara pauses in her setup of the board. “You want me to help put her down?”

Lena walks behind her wife and squeezes her shoulder affectionately. “No darling, that's okay. I'm gonna feed her and then I'll be back out once she's down. Make sure we're the ship piece please.”

“Always.”

Lena settles in the recliner with Edith in the nursery, who is valiantly fighting sleep so she can eat. They both enjoy the quiet time after so much family interaction tonight.

Lena glances up quickly when the nursery door opens. Kara walks in with a sheepish look on her face when Lena lifts a questioning brow.

“I kept looking down the hallway and Alex finally had enough. She ordered me to just go join you already.”

Lena smiles as Edith finishes feeding. “You're just in time to change her before she goes to sleep.”

Kara's bright smile makes Lena's heart flutter in her chest. “Come here my sleepy girl.” she whispers, tucking Edith to her chest and moving to the changing table.

Lena relaxes in the recliner, enjoying hearing Kara's baby talk as she expertly changes Edith’s diaper and then tucks their tired daughter to her chest again. Edith quickly loses the fight against sleep once she's settled in Kara's warm embrace.

“Love you, sweetheart.” Kara whispers before laying Edith in her crib.

They make sure she's content before walking back toward the living room hand in hand. Kara tugs Lena to a stop before they join their friends.

“Thank you for agreeing to bring game night back here tonight.” Kara says softly with a smile on her lips. “It feels good to get back to some of our usual family activities. And having Edith involved now just makes it better.”

“I'm happy we did this tonight. It's been fun.” Lena stretches up onto tiptoes to kiss Kara deeply. She feels a great amount of satisfaction when they separate and Kara looks sufficiently dazed. Even after years of being together, Lena still knows how to knock her wife off her feet.

Lena wipes her thumb along Kara's bottom lip. “Now, let's go remind everyone why we're the reigning Monopoly champs.”

Later, when everyone else has gone bankrupt after landing on Lena and Kara's Boardwalk property, Lena officially calls the return of game night at the Luthor-Danvers household a phenomenal success.
