I Didn't Mean To Hurt Anyone

Katherine woke up bright and early to get ready for the day. Her morning routine consisted of taking a shower, getting dressed in her new green robes, and then quickly running to go cry to Anne. Look, she doesn’t do this every morning just every once in a while … okay every other day, but, not the point.

On the train ride over here, Anne had told Katherine that she was a very likeable person and that everyone would like her. Katherine was surprised when one girl not only didn't like her but was also very rude to her.

Katherine went to talk to Anne, who was still in bed. "Annie!"

Anne replied, "w-hwta?" from under the covers.

Katherine ripped off the sheets to reveal a half-asleep Anne. "Anne, what are you still doing in bed? Breakfast is in like six minutes!" Katherine said, disappointed but not surprised.

Anne slurred, "Yeah, six minutes is plenty of time."

"Whatever, I need help figuring out something."

"Wow, shocker," Anne said unenthusiastically

Katherine, annoyed, slipped the pillow from under Anne's head and slapped her in the back.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Anne sat up and looked Katherine in the eye. "What do you need help with?

"On the train ride here, you said I was a very likeable person, did you not?"

Anne, unsure where this was going, replied, "Yes, I did. Why did you have trouble making friends last night?" Because I swear-”

“No, no, nothing like that I made plenty of friends-”

“So what is it? … You didn’t get drunk or anything right.”

"Oh god no, It's just that someone at my table was ignoring me the entire night, so naturally, I was a bit confused. I figured maybe she was just shy or something, but when I finally confronted her, she went off on me, saying I was self-centred and whatnot."

"Do you want me to shank her or something?" Anne asked.

"What? No! I'm starting to think you got wasted last night."

"You're changing the topic," Anne said defensively. "Who cares what some girl thinks? Everyone else liked you fine, right? Maybe she was just jealous because you're, well, you."

Katherine supposed that Anne was probably right and that the girl was probably just jealous, so she decided to drop it.

"Now, are you going to be ready in time for breakfast, which is starting as we speak?"

"Eh, just go without me. I get more time in bed this way, but do save me a muffin or something."

"I figured. I'll see you after class, okay? Don't be late," Katherine said a bit sternly as she walked out.

Anne muttered, "I’m too hungover for this."

“I heard that!” Katherine added as she trotted down the corridor.

This girl is going to be the death of me

-

Katherine walked with her dormmates and some other Slytherin girls as they made their way to the Great Hall. They talked about their classes, their professors, and some gossip about their fellow classmates. Katherine was in high spirits, enjoying the company of her friends. That's when she noticed the girl, the same one she had been thinking about for the last couple of hours, creeping behind the group of girls. As soon as Katherine looked at her, the girl quickly turned her head and retorted into a grimace.

Curiosity got the better of Katherine. Maybe the girl wanted to walk with them? Maybe she was just in a bad mood yesterday? Katherine turned her head back forward and rolled her eyes. If the girl wanted to walk with them, she could just ask. She didn’t have to creep behind them while staring at Katherine. But Katherine knew better than to approach her because of what had happened last time.

“Ew look, that weird girl is following us,” one of the girls she was walking with commented.

“Oh, eww, what does she want?” another one said, almost disgusted.

Margaret chimed in, “Looks like she wants Katherine. She's only been staring daggers at you since the sorting ceremony yesterday.”

The girls giggled and made some disgusted-sounding comments and noises.

Katherine was taken aback. Had she really? Katherine hadn’t noticed! Now she was starting to think that maybe she was jealous of her.

“What a loser,” another girl added.

The girl definitely heard the last comment, as she stormed off with an almost flustered, embarrassed, yet still somehow mad look on her face.

Maybe she really is a weirdo.

-

After finishing breakfast and grabbing a muffin for Anne, she headed off to her first class: Potions. They didn't do much, just talked about rules and expectations, which made it easy to hear the ruckus occurring behind her. It was the same girl again! Katherine had totally forgotten that she would share all of her classes with this girl.

However, this time the girl wasn't looking at Katherine. Instead, she was looking at a fellow Slytherin boy who seemed to have knocked down some of her belongings onto the floor. As always, the girl looked annoyed, but much more so than normal. "Shit! Look what you've done now! I told you to piss off!" the girl exclaimed angrily.

"Why can't you just answer me? I said I was sorry!" the boy pleaded.

"That's enough from both of you!" the professor chimed in.

"But-" the girl tried to defend herself but was cut off.

"I don't want to hear it. Ten points from Slytherin!"

The Slytherins in the class sighed and darted angry looks at the two in trouble. Just then, the girl got up and walked right out of the class. The potions professor just sighed and got back to the lesson.

Was he not going to prosecute her for that? She just walked out in the middle of class! The pure audacity of this girl--Katherine couldn't believe it! First, she insulted her, stalked her, and now she's disrespecting the professors and getting away with it!

When class ended, Katherine walked to her next class, History of Magic. It was fine and all, but she couldn't help but notice that the same girl with the attitude didn't show up to class. She should really learn her name and stop calling her "the girl." It’s fine, she could just ask Annie at lunch--she would probably know. But for now, Katherine should probably just pay attention to the lesson.
