Chapter 1
I know this dream of life is never-ending...
"Who do I vote for? The girl who can't remember any of it..., her." Jane could only tilt her head in a non-verbal expression of surprise and even if it may not seemed like it, in that moment her body felt a new emotion she had never felt since she got here.
Shock.
Jane was shocked at Ocean's words, the girl's brown eyes filled with so many feelings, thoughts, and emotions, and yet she seemed satisfied with her conclusion.
Uranium!
The choir- No..., her friends step forward for a final time in this abandoned warehouse, each one by one joining Ocean as they all accept this decision. As Jane watches, tinglings of fear shoot up her spine as she watches every single one of them step up, some part of her wishing they would come back and tell her that wasn't the end and that she didn't have to leave them.
What the world needs, is people like me!
Isn't it funny how even a 'doll' like her can feel such emotions, even if she couldn't pinpoint what those emotions were...
That's the funny thing about emotions, they are not thought-driven but instead come from the heart, your place of yearning. The heart, a vital organ, makes you feel so much, heartbreak, happiness, fear, anger, and so much more. Even with her doll head, she still feels such a deep, horrendous pain inside her heart... She knows that all of these people, Ocean, Noel, Mischa, Ricky, and Constance, won't get to live the life they deserve, that it was her who they all made the sacrifice for to bring back to life despite how badly she knew they all wanted it.
A whirl of boozy-floozy flashing light.
Ocean O'Connell Rosenberg, the most successful girl in town and will no doubt be a renowned person worldwide in the future. Ocean, to Jane, was by far the most attention-grabbing of anyone in this group, her fiery red hair matching with her harsh personality makes it hard to ignore her. Jane found Ocean so utterly fascinating, how even in death, where rules and morals have no value, she still sticks to her principles, how she went from being self-righteous to the most caring individual in this abandoned warehouse, how she was given the most obvious choice to pick herself but went with Jane anyway...
Jane doesn't think she will ever feel the way her chest is filled with such bittersweet emotion again when she can no longer look at Ocean. She was going to miss the girl unbelievably so.
A nugget of wisdom, solid gold!
Noel Gruber, the most romantic boy in town, a title which Jane thinks suits him well. Noel may not see it himself, but he was an artist. With so few words and actions, he was able to make the clique seem otherworldly and unique, he was able to turn tragedy into something one longs for, an emotion that can never be replicated by ordinary life. Monique Gibeau was woven into his heart that bleeds out onto the cold floor of this abandoned warehouse during his song, truly showcasing the beauty in the hideous. On some level, Jane thinks they understand each other in that aspect, the aspect of tragedy that Noel romanticizes and Jane lives.
Noel would've grown to be something great, whether it be a poet, an actor, or even just working at Taco Bell all his life, he would've been amazing at whatever he decided to do.
My life is awesome!
Mischa Bachinski, the angriest boy in town, a title Jane would argue to be inaccurate. In her eyes, it would be much more accurate to call him the most passionate boy in town. It was the best way to describe him, Mischa was so passionate about everything, from his home country to Talia, even if others failed to see it, he cared so much. Looking at him now, standing up with the others..., she wonders if she'll be able to see Talia when she gets back. Jane feels like she owes it to him, to talk to her and tell her how much he loves her..., they were meant for each other even if their fates didn't align. He loved her and he loved Ukraine.
She would have to make sure she visits sometimes.
Talia!
Ricky Potts, the most imaginative boy in town.
...
Savannah..., she liked that name a lot.
There was just something that felt so right about the name, how much weight and value it held made it irreplaceable to Jane. Even when leading a normal life, she was sure this name wouldn't be precious to her, it would always remind her of Ricky after all. The smart, creative, and ever-so-loving Richard Potts. Having the world of Zolar come right to life in front of her, watching his wildest fantasies come true was so interesting to her, he was interesting. To be able to come up with that intricate of a world wasn't easy for a lot of people, but Ricky could do it, Ricky could do it because it was his life. Jane hopes even in death, that creative spark only keeps growing.
I'm just a swingin' space-age bachelor man.
Constance Blackwood, the nicest girl in town. She does live up to, the title, Constance had to be the kindest most impassioned person Jane has ever had the pleasure of knowing. Constance was so strong in ways Jane could only wish to be, being able to admit her faults and stand against popular opinion isn't an easy thing to do, especially when bearing all the pain other individuals cause you every day. Constancedeservess so much. She deserves to look her family in the eyes again, to hug them, and to cherish them. Even if Constance will never get to, Jane makes a silent promise to herself to look out for them. Whatever Constance wants her to do, she will.
Forever eternally Jane Doe...
Pain..., it was the only thing Jane knew since the moment she was brought here. Whether it be from the cruel words of others, their uncomfortable glances, or the cold, empty feeling that held tightly onto her very soul (or, lack thereof,) Jane was in pain. Truth be told, it was hard to watch all the other choir members sing the songs of their lives, hopes, and dreams..., it reminded Jane of what she never had. Even when she did get to go back, would she have a family to go back to? A loving partner? Opportunities? Fantasies? What was there for her in the life she had lost?
Jane never thought she would be able to feel like this, but she was scared of what lay ahead.
This is the new song we sing for birthdays!
And how could she ever forget about her birthday party, her first and forever most memorable one.?Of course, it's not like Jane remembers, but she hopes her birthday parties in life were always this great. Filled with friends, family, decorations, warm food, and a cake with the brightest candles. Although, she doubts any of the others she has will be able to top this one, after all, her friends even made a whole new song just for her. A spur-of-the-moment decision turned into a moment Jane is eternally grateful for.
There's nothing wrong with the nicest girl in town.
...
Jane feels stuck in her spot like time has paused while the flashing lights, music, and her friends all continue at normal speed. ...Something was happening, her eyes looked all around the warehouse, trying to find the cause for her stuck position and the anxiousness rising in her chest, Karnak's voice muffled in her ears.
What is happening?
Her mouth opens to speak, and she vocalizes the very question on her mind before she sees it...
She sees a blinding light illuminate the space around her, her body turning to see the light, the living world just a few steps away from her. It was right there, the thing she had yearned for this whole time, an identity to call her own, a place to call her home.
...
So why as she was moving did her steps feel so awfully heavy? Why did this feel so wrong, like, this isn't how the story should end. Her heart hurting more than it ever has as she takes one last look at her friends.
The looks of contentment, of hope, of emotions she couldn't even describe...
No.
No, no, no! This... This can't be it, can it?! She can't just lose it all, to gain it right back, only for it to get lost again. She doesn't want to leave, she doesn't want to leave them all behind.
And yet, her feet don't stop, they don't even hesitate walking into the light that blinds her vision, causing her eyes to close in pain, and her head to ache.
She didn't even get to say goodbye...
It's just a ride!
The curtains drop behind her, their heavy fabric making an audible noise in her ears as she keeps walking against her own will, she should've known Karnak wouldn't let her just stay here.
His robotic voice could still be heard loud and clear to her even if she swears she's walked a good enough distance to where that shouldn't be possible. Karnak starts to speak, voice unemotional and unwavering as ever.
"Her name is-"
....
...
..
.
..
...
....
Electricity waves suddenly start to spew, Karnak's voice going up and down in pitch before his animatronic body flops against it's glass, Virgil's hair sticking up as the rat perishes along with him.
Light's flickered, music going awry, the light Jane had walked into turning a dark blue a she feels herself once again being moved despite herself. She opens her eyes, questions in her head coming up a million miles a second as her head whips around to the curtain, or, where the curtain was previously...
In the place of the thick black curtain that she had walked through previously was glass and a view of a dark, ominous forest. For not the first time coming into the light, Jane open's her mouth to ask what was going on, where was the light, why was she here now, all the questions that sprawled through her mind in those few seconds.
A few seconds before she blacks out, no longer seeing much of anything anymore.
But Jane knew something was wrong.
The light had gone dark.
It goes around and round and round again...

RATTLE!
RATTLE RATTLE!!
...
"I better hurry up and find that uniform before someone spots me..." A small voice says from outside of... wherever Jane currently was.
Looking around the confines of her place of capture, JJane'seyes blink a few times in a multitude of different emotions at the sight before her, her eyes quickly adjusting themselves to the darkness of the room(?).
Where was she? Was this Uranium??
Did Karnak manage to send her back? But who was she now??? She felt the same as before..., porcelain skin and all.
The box starts shaking again, the voice she had heard before speaking once more in a frustrated and hurried tone. "Urgggh... This lid weighs a ton!" The voice, presumably a male, pants from the excursion. Now, who exactly is that? A little brother maybe? Even in life, she has so many questions about herself, like nothing changed at all from the afterlife. ...Did anything change?
Her hand reaches up to her face, its cold surface felt underneath her fingertips as the girl's hold on the doll she just realized she still has tightened.
She isn't different.
She is still a Jane Doe.
How cruel is that? Even when promised to live like a normal individual, promised that you can know who you are and what was your life, that was once again robbed from her. Should she even be feeling surprised? Who was to say that Karnak could've ever been trusted in the first place, maybe this was all some ploy to torment her and the choir for even daring to hope.
If Jane could cry right now, she's sure she would be... This pain hurts so badly, the pain of never knowing who she was. It's like god personally descended from the heavens and ripped out her soul from her body, leaving a sham of a person, a poor imitation of life.
Yes..., that was all she was wasn't she, an imitation of a person, a monstrous figure who dares act like they have emotions and feelings.
...
A voice startles Jane out of her spiraling, the voice she had heard from earlier now back in full swing with a confident spunk in it's voice as she heard it's footsteps stand farther away from her.
"Try this on for size! Mya-ha!" She could hear it take a deep breath, preparing to do whatever it was it had planned on doing... What was it doing? Maybe she should actually see the voice, maybe it has some kind of answer as to what was going on.
Jane reaches out, only now noticing how confined the space is, and starts to push against the wall(?), her force gradually increasing as she realizes it won't budge. How odd... She tries a little harder..., a little more, the voice outside letting out a maniacal laugh before she manages to push the door open, the force she used making her stumble into what she can now see was a coffin of sorts and sending her doll falling to the ground with a thud.
The girl grips tightly onto the sides of the black coffin, steadying herself as her soulless eyes take in her new environment.
She was in a room with a bunch of other coffins, all floating like hers was, windows covered by grey curtains, and archways with green light fixtures bolted onto them, it looked far more regal than anything she could have imagined... Uranium looks a lot more regal than she thought, especially from how her friends had described it. Surely, they must have just been so used to it that they couldn't see its beauty, that was the only answer Jane could have come up with before spotting something, or more so, someone.
A small grey... cat? Raccoon? Tanuki? Her animal knowledge seemed to fail her here as she couldn't decipher the small grey creature in front of her. That wasn't its most striking feature though, far from it, that title had to have gone its flaming blue ears. It was truly a unique sight to behold, something Jane had never seen before... Was this normal for Uranium? Was it the Uranium poisoning that had gotten to this fluffy guy that made them like that?
Well, whatever it was, the creature still jumps back in shock as its mouth is agape, wide eyes going back and forth from the doll on the ground to her.
Its shrieks fill her ears, "What the- You ain't supposed to be awake?! W-What even ARE you?!" It was almost comical how as she jumps down from her coffin, getting closer to the creature to pick up her poor doll that laid face first into the ground, said creature quickly starts to back away from her as some sort of defense. In fact, she felt kind of bad for it, but she also couldn't deny her curiosity of it...
"Are you a cat? Or a raccoon of some sort?" Her words came out in the haunting echo as they always do..., even outside of the warehouse it manages to create its own echo. The weasel was quick to take great offense to the girl's words however, its initial fear subsided for a moment as it exclaimed, "How... How DARE YOU! I am no RACCOON! I'm Grim, sorcerer extraordinaire! And how dare you not answer my question you... you... puny doll human!!" Jane blinks back a few times in response, her head tilting as she questions its words... After all, it's not like he exactly answered her question either, though she supposes a great sorcerer extraordinaire such as himself has no need to answer her questions, why would he when he was obviously busy?
Jane opens her mouth to speak, head tilting back to be leveled as she prepares to introduce herself to Grim right before he starts to talk again. "Tch. Whatever. You... doll human! Just gimme your uniform, and be quick about it!" Once again, she opens her mouth to respond to his words only to be cut off again by Grim. "'Cause if you don't... you're gonna regret it!"
Grim's words cued blue flames to circle them both, only a flash and not leaving so much as a scratch on the elegant tile beneath them, but an incredible feat to Jane, only driving her curiosity about Grim. It certainly isn't every day you meet a creature who can perform such a trick..., nor does she guess it's common to meet a creature who is also a sorcerer. She's quick to get closer to Grim, her figure towering over him as she leaned down to speak with him more clearly, tone unwavering but there was clear interest behind it.
"Can you do that again? Can you teach me how to do that? Are all creatures in Uranium like you, or are you just special? Do you-" A barrage of questions flew out of her mouth, none waiting for an answer as she moved on to the next one. If Jane knew one thing about herself, other than the fact she goes to St. Cassian High School, it would be that animals were a key interest of hers, and Grim just made the number one spot in that list.
Her brain momentarily pushed out her sad thoughts and her questions about where she was to focus on Grim in front of her, who seemed to inch nearer and nearer to the door with each step Jane took. "Geez! Will you stop it with the questions doll human?! You- You're annoying the great Grim!!" His feet patter faster and faster on the floor as they reach a double door, leading out into a world Jane has yet to explore...
But Jane wasn't done yet, her mouth might have been shut but her eyes and body were still following him as she awaited answers. Jane may find her appearance only saddening, a tragic fact that she isn't who she should be and that everything about herself has been robbed from her, but what she so often forgets is that her appearance is also quite terrifying... Her lifeless blacked-out eyes leave others to feel watched..., her ghostly skin makes her look sickly or unhuman..., and the headless doll she carries whose body looks strangely like her head...
The point is, Grim, although he would never say it, was terrified of the girl and wanted away from her quickly. ...Sure, he could probably just melt her face off or something along those lines, but do you expect the great Grim to be thinking clearly in a situation just as this?! No! He's gonna run for his freaking life before the doll lady snatches his precious soul away from him!!
Grim's small, swift body darts out of the room within a flash, causing a rather confused Jane to stand still for a moment... her thoughts trying to process what had just occurred, before running after him. She wasn't even quite sure why she was following him other than she wanted answers, not only for him but as to where she was and he was her only option at this point in time.
The two ran around the grounds of what looked to Jane to be a school, going through dark hallways, classrooms, the courtyard, and pretty much everywhere Grim fled, she was right on his trail. He was so close to just screaming at her to leave him alone already... All he wanted was to just rob another student of their uniform and call it a day, but Jane was persistent. She had to be if she wanted to have any hope of knowing where she was, she was starting to doubt this was Uranium...
This couldn't be Uranium... The architecture, the feel, and even Grim felt so out of place to her. She doesn't know much of Uranium other than the bits and pieces of information she got from her friends, but the regal, dark academy with gothic architecture and raccoons who can spit fire didn't match up with dead-end town... It wasn't matching up with pretty much anything she knows of the US, Canada, the UK, etc. It was so otherworldly in the academy's looks and vibes, like it was in another plane of existence itself, just like the warehouse.
Well..., except for the warehouse was significantly less clean than here.
All the chasing, and all the random shouts from Grim, ended up bringing them both to a library.
Grim runs into the room, panting as his heart practically threatens to break out of his cheat... His mind running with so many thoughts and scenarios, none of which wanted Jane to find him in there. He would much prefer to never see her again..., ever.
But of course, as luck would have it, she is quick to burst into the room not even two minutes later.
Grim groans exasperatedly, "Aghh.... Can you just leave me alone!! Keep your dumb uniform, it's probably got your weird doll germs everywhere on it anyway!" His words came out harsh, contrary to how he was feeling at the moment as Jane once again started to get closer to him. He really didn't know what the human thing's deal was, but it was seriously starting to piss him off, he was Grim, sorcerer extraordinaire for crying out loud! Who did they think they were following him around like this?! They start to circle the room, Grim's back turns towards the door of the library as he keeps a firm defensive stance, Jane on the other hand, finally stops trying to approach him as she sees how upset the fluffy creature across the room from her has become. The only comfort she could think to give him was to hold out her dolly and ask, "Would you like to brush my dolly's hair? You might feel better if you do." To which Grim just groaned again... "What part of leaving me alone do you not understand human-"
WHIP!
A sharp crack is heard in the air as Grim yelps, jumping from the sudden whip. "Me-YEOW! That hurt! What gives?" Grim turns around in search of his sudden pain, no longer interested in Jane as he is met with the view of a tall man towering over him with a look of disapproval and slight anger.
"Consider it tough love." Jane's eyes were met with the sight of a new individual, one who actually looked human this time. The male in question was tall and pale, his face covered with a crow mask but his yellow eyes glowed from beneath it, his clothing was sophisticated and formal, leaving Jane to feel a little underdressed all of a sudden... Karnak wasn't exactly here to give her a magical girl transformation anymore. Anyway, the man's aura clearly demanded respect, like an authority figure of sorts, but she could also sense there was something more to it than that..., though she couldn't name it.
The crow man, seemingly done with his 'tough love,' looks to Jane, hesitating for just a split second before starting to once again speak, "Ah, I've found you at last. Splendid. I trust you're one of this year's new students? My, were you ever eager to make your debut." His head shakes as his arms cross, not hiding any sense of frustration with the actions he was having as he addressed her. The real question to Jane though was... everything, actually. Was... she supposed to be a new student? That couldn't be possible though if this really isn't her world as she suspects, it also doesn't make any sense considering she should still be a student of St. Cassian...
And of course, he just continues on while her head swims with unanswered questions and thoughts. "And bringing a poorly trained familiar with you? That is a clear violation of the school's rules." ...Even if she didn't go to this aforementioned school, she still wasn't a fan of getting chewed out by an authority figure. The male was also quick to grab Grim by the scruff of his neck, prompting the smaller creature to struggle in his grasp as it desperately wanted freedom.
Grim pipes up with, "As if I'd serve some lowly human! Now lemme go!" To which the man is quick to shut the cat up with, "Yes, yes. Rebellious familiars always say that. Do be quiet for a bit, won't you?" ...It must be clear to everyone but Grim himself that he probably shouldn't be struggling in the crow man's grasp anymore, as there is clearly no way he can get himself out of it and the male wasn't planning on letting Grim go anytime soon. Despite that, Jane does feel a little bad for the little guy, she's sure he has his reasons for being here and it doesn't seem all that fair to treat him like this when he is as cognizant as any other human being she's met, he can quite literally talk and everything. However, it might be better if he's kept away from her since she is definitely not through with her fixation on him, her icy hands ready to poke and prob at any chance she gets.
Yeah, definitely for the best.
"Dear me. of all the students I've dealt with, you're the first with the temerity enough to open their own gate and step out of it. Does the very notion of patience elude you? No matter. Your orientation has already begun. Let us return to the Mirror Chamber." Seemingly already over the day's events and the disruption Grim and Jane had caused, the man readjusts Grim in his grip and prepares to turn his heel only to be stopped by Jane's voice asking, "What is a gate?" Her footsteps alluding to her following him as sighs, stopping by the library doors.
With a wave of his hand, he replies, "You awakened in a room full of gates, did you not? All of the students here at the campus arrived by passing through such gates. Although typically the students have restraint enough to wait until I open them before waking up." He spared her no retort before continuing on, not even giving Jane enough time to maybe feel offended about his sharp tongue. "The design is intended to symbolize a parting with your former world, and a rebirth into a new one."
Jane thought that was quite fitting..., especially considering her walk through death into a new life. However, that didn't really answer her question... Were these gates specifically the coffin? Or was it something else that made it to where you can travel from place to place? It was a very confusing predicament and with no one answering her questions as they probably just interrupted her for the millionth time, Jane decided to just stay back and observe for the time being.
A good choice as the crow man ushers her out of the library, "But now is not the time for such prattle. You've got a student orientation to attend! Go on, now. Make haste." Pushing her into the wide open courtyard, stars smiling at her from above while the air remains chilly and uninviting. Being able to look around more so than before, Jane again makes note of the unique feel of this institution, more specifically its darker color pallet and supernatural aura. It was very different from the schools she could picture in her head, those being lighter, and more child-friendly.
As you all walked to what you can only assume to be the orientation the man mentioned earlier, said male seemed to notice the curiosity and confusion in your otherwise cold gaze as you looked around the courtyard. The sight made his eyebrow raise as he too grew a little confused, what could have you be looking so bemused? Maybe it was being in a new school..., a magic academy was different from just your regular secondary school after all, but he also had a feeling that was not the case...
You were asking a lot of questions earlier, which despite him constantly dismissing you, he still noticed. Has the teleportation really frazzled your memory this much? Well, as the generous headmage he is, he supposes he should refresh your sorry soul.
The silence you two shared was soon interrupted as the masked man cleared his throat, soon speaking up, "Have you not fully regained consciousness? I can only assume the timespace teleportation must have addled your memories..." He sighs, "Well, these things happen, I suppose. I shall explain it to you while we walk. Truly, my magnanimity is boundless." You were almost surprised at how quickly he picked up on your confusion due to the dismissive and self-righteous image he always seems to exude..., nonetheless, her interest had certainly peaked. Who wouldn't want to learn about the exciting new world that they are trapped in with no possible way home?
"Ahem..., this is Night Raven College. It is an institution for students the world over who demonstrate a rare aptitude for magic. It is the most prestigious academy of its sort in all of Twisted Wonderland. And I am Dire Crowley. Having been entrusted with its care by the chairman, I serve as headmage." The man, who Jane now knows as Crowley, began to rattle on as he gave Jane a basic run-through of the academy and who he was. While this was certainly a fun history lesson, none of that is what interested her, no. What had gotten her attention by a long shot was the fact that he just admitted he and the students here could use magic.
Leaning forward slightly, her curls swaying from the change in posture, Jane asks, "Magic exists here? There's even academies for such a thing?" Despite her forever deadpanned tone, she was truly excited to hear this new bit of information! It also kind of reminded her of some book revolving around the same concept that she can't quite remember the name of...
Crowley's suspicious and mildly concerned voice drags you out of your thoughts, "Yes, magic does in fact exist as I'm sure you are already aware of... However, only those who the Dark Mirror perceives as having a talent for magic are admitted to the college."
As Crowley once again was about to explain more mechanics of this world, some of which you are sure you'll need to know in the future. You both had utterly failed to notice Grim, who was growing more irritated by the minute, wiggling in Crowley's tight grip, opening his mouth full of pointy, sharp teeth, and getting ready to chomp down on the headage's arm...
...
CHOMP
...
Suddenly the walk to the orientation turned out to be a lot more chaotic than either Jane or Crowley expected it to be...
Grim's bite was a fierce one as Crowley instinctively dropped the cat, clutching his arm to his chest in pure shock. Grim all the meanwhile was cackling like a maniac as he swiftly ran to safety, determined to get away from Jane and Crowley so he could finally achieve his lifelong purpose of becoming the world's greatest mage. He was destined to do this!! And he was not gonna let some arrogant human get in the way, for he was the great mage Grim!
"YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE HUMANS!" Grim shouts back, his tiny body like a rat with how quickly he managed to escape the eyes of both of you.
Completely frazzled by the admittedly smart move from Grim, Crowley stood still for a few moments before hurriedly going after Grim, enraged at his escape and the damage to his ego. "COME BACK YOU VILE VERMIN!" Meanwhile, Jane watches the two leave the premises, quite shocked at what had just occurred.
As much as a spectacle it is to see a grown man run after a raccoon all the while they both flung insults at each other, there was now a big problem Jane had to face as Crowley was gone...
She had zero clue on how to get to the orientation she was for some reason meant to go to.
Now, realistically, she could just call it quits and find a way out of this place, neglecting the orientation altogether. But on the other hand, Crowley never really gave her much of a choice in skipping it or not... And it's not like Karnak's plans of forcing her to do things against her will ever turned out badly so, why shouldn't she go along with this? Granted, Crowley isn't Karnak, but they were both mysterious men who possessed magic beyond her comprehension in a place she just arrived at...
So you can see her reasoning as she shrugged and kept walking in the direction her and Crowley were headed in, surely she'll find it eventually, right?
In all honesty, it was nice to have a small break from the commotion of... well, everything. From Crowley, Grim, this new world, magic, Ocean, Mischa, Noel, Ricky, Constance, Karnak, fall- A lot has happened recently.
Though, another thing this silence brings is unwanted thoughts.
...
She really hopes they are all okay, wherever the afterlife may be. Despite only knowing them in their brief amount of time in that warehouse, Jane truly feels that she got to really know all of them so personally in that limbo. She doesn't think anything else could have pushed them so close together other than Karnak. Other than the accident. Life will really be so much duller without Ocean's determination, Noel's eloquence, Mischa's passion, Ricky's creativity, and Constance's liveliness.
In thinking of their lives, she also is brought back to her lack thereof. Every time she tries to reach back into the very depths of her memory, a dull ache fills her being as nothing comes to mind. Really, all she wishes to have is a name, a birthday, family, friends, something to identify her, something to make her anything other than a Jane Doe.
Why is it so much to ask for?
Why is it so awful that she wants to be somebody?
Why won't the pain in her heart go away?
There were so many questions but so few answers... She can really only wonder if this world will be any different, if this world that possess such a wonderful that is magic will be able to answer her one question. Who am I?
Jane kept walking on and on despite the thoughts that swim in her head, heading for god knows what as the she walks under the awnings meant to keep students nice and dry while heading to their classes. Like she is so very often, Jane was lost in her thoughts, her mind trying to organize the very few memories she has as each one held no less significance to the last.
It wasn't until she saw something, or rather, someone, quite peculiar in the distance that she finally was able to focus on the surroundings in front of her.
In the distance, observing a rather odd-looking statue was a tall, black-haired male. His skin was pale and from where you were, which was quite a bit farther away from him, she could see he had a pair of vibrant green eyes. All that being said, he was visually far more interesting than the people you'd expect to see in places like Uranium. Though Jane also supposes that's to be expected considering this world has talking cats and magic..., of course, the people here look like storybook protagonists.
And if that wasn't enough, the man had a pair of black horns resting on his head to complete the dark and mysterious look he may have unintentionally set out to exude.
How could she not want to go up and talk to this guy? Just letting him walk off would be such a wasted opportunity....
And she still needed to know where the orientation was. If she wasn't late before, she definitely are now.
He must have already sensed her presence or heard her walking behind him as the male turned to face her the moment she got closer, his head tilting. A silence fills the air for just a moment as they both silently study each other, it wasn't broken too long after though when the male in front of Jane finally spoke up, "...Can I help you, child of man?" To which she responded with, "Yes, do you happen to know where the orientation is being held?" Now, normally she would have been very keen at this moment to try and learn more about the man in front of her as the horns on his head made her quite curious, but Crowley was initially leading her to her orientation and it was probably best to respect his wishes.
The ravenette in front of Jane blinked a couple of times, his eyebrows raising as his face morphed into one of subtle surprise. "Orientation?" He sighs before continuing, "Yes, that was today wasn't it..." To which, she only nodded. It seems he wasn't aware an orientation was taking place, though he does seem to be a bit too old to be needing one. By the way, he was walking around the courtyard, one can only assume he's well acquainted with this place. As Jane adjusted the doll in her arms, eyes roaming to the gargoyle statue beside her, she heard the male's voice once again ring out. "Conveniently, I also should be at the orientation. Follow me, child of man and I shall lead the way." He awaited no response as he turned his back towards her and started walking, his long strides taking Jane off guard as she had to suddenly stop ogling and move with purpose to match his pace.
No words were spoken between Jane and the male during this brief period, only the sounds of their footsteps and the sounds of nature could be heard. That wasn't all too awful though as surprisingly, the orientation room seemed to not be too far from where the male had once stood. Jane probably would have found it if she kept going in the direction she was once headed..., but at least she seemed to have helped someone else on the way so, a wins a win.
As the ravenette takes a breath, slowing his pace as he reaches the door of the presumed orientation room, Jane's figure is close behind, a pair of rushing footsteps, as well as a distinct voice, can be heard to the left of the pair...
"Hold it!" Whipping her head to where the voice came from, Jane can see Crowley dashing over to her form with an exhausted Grim in hand. He looked quite frazzled and slightly agitated as he finally caught up to her. "Why on Earth would you think it would be a good idea to leave the spot I left you in, hm?! My, are you truly as dense as they come?" While Crowley shuts his eyes, catching his breath, Jane's dark, soulless eyes blink a few times in surprise. She does suppose she could have stayed where he left her, but she did get to the orientation room in the end, did she not? In fact, she ended up being exactly where he wanted her to be faster than him. She didn't quite understand the issue here...
Leaning forward slightly, Jane voice out your concerns, "I do apologize but..., I am where you wanted me to be, no?" Crowley shakes his head, "That's not the issue, the issue is that you could have run into some dangerous individuals-" Crowley's words were cut off by himself as he opens his eyes and spots the taller male beside her, his eyes immediately growing wide and quickly straightens himself up. "A-Ah, Mr. Draconia! Apologies if this student here was bothering you, I was just escorting her to orientation as I am so kind." ...As usual, Crowley is swift to inflate his ego, though it's clear to both Jane and the male she now knows as, "Mr. Draconia," that his apologies and mannerisms have grown quite stiff. She can't quite wrap her head around it..., She can only presume they are well acquainted with how Crowley is speaking to him, so what's with the sudden anxiousness? Though, admittedly, Crowley does do a lot of things she had yet to understand...
Draconia shakes his head, remaining as graceful as ever as his hand moves from the door to rest at his side. "They weren't bothering me at all, I had offered to lead the way to the orientation room as I too was absent for it. It appears I must have missed the invite..., my apologies headmage." His words seemed to cause Crowley to relax a little as he grew less stiff, the headmage's free hand landing on his hip. "That is quite the tragedy, though you are thankfully here now and can direct your underclassmen to their dorm after the ceremony concludes." Draconia nods and Crowley continues on, "I imagine the ceremony should end shortly as this the only student that should be left to sort."
The word sort had garnered some of Jane's interest as she could only wonder what the headmage had meant by that. Swaying a little as she spoke, she asked, "What do you mean by sorting?" Despite her questioning gaze, Crowley once again for what felt like the millionth time that night, managed to brush it off. "You'll see what I'm referring to as we go in, I wouldn't have thought the time-space teleportation would addle your memories quite this roughly..."
The older male sighs, fed up with the days events and he steps forward towards the doors, his confidence slowly coming back bit by bit.
Moving past Crowley skipping over most of her questions this evening, Jane steps forward as well behind Crowley and Draconia, subconsciously biting her lip as she anticipated Crowley to be opening the doors to the great beyond at any moment now... Although she can't really feel much, she does feel a slight churn in her stomach as a small bout of anxiousness reaches her, the feeling unpleasant but better than nothing at all...
Jane breathes in, filling her lungs with the oxygen that surrounds her, and Crowley's hand finally pushes the wooden surface beneath it, revealing a world unseen.
A world she was sure wasn't her own.
