Chapter 19
Everynone was cautious. Since the last attack before the little prince’s birth, the light side had stayed oddly quiet. Not a single attack has been made against them and even in the ministry things have been quiet. And while Regulus and Marvolo were enjoying the momentary peace to spend time with their newborn son they too had a feeling that something was going to happen. Though they were hoping that it was because of the upcoming school year they knew that was likely not the case.
But for today they decided to put all the war planning on the backburner and focus on celebrating Hadrian’s first month with them. They had decided to hold a small gathering with their friends and family (inner circle, would insist Marvolo) in the Slytherin manor garden as the weather was still warm it being late august. Everyone who mattered were there, Pandora being the baby’s godmother was obviously there, Barty Jr and Evan were there because they were apparently the honorary uncles, the Malfoy’s were there because they were relatives and wanted to introduce the almost 3 month old Draco to Hadrian, even Antares was there with his husband. Besides them the LeStranges were there and also other members of the inner circle.
And they ALL brought gifts to the parents and the baby, much to Regulus’ and Marvolo’s dismay as both of them had said multiple times that bringing gifts was not necessary. When everyone had arrived there was a huge pile of presents from everyone that they would have to open later on, thought Regulus and Marvolo imagining all the thanking they would have to do later on. For now however they decided to focus on the true star of the day.
Hadrian had been quietly laying in his playmat looking at the stuffed animals that were made to float around him by his parents, when suddenly Narcissa came near him and talked with his parents a little before going away again. When she came back next time she was holding Draco and came a lot closer to Hadrian than before, before suddenly bending down and putting Draco next to Hadrian.
Now, however Hadrian had no idea what to do he had never seen something like this, having spent his time with his parents, Nagini and his aunts/uncles. And now there was this thing next to him and it was waving a toy around and babbling. So yeah Hadrian was amazed and confused when faced with something like this.
A snort was heard among the adults, everyone turned to the person who had made the noise and were surprised to find that it was Lucius, who was quickly turning red when he realised all eyes were on him. “I apologise for my lack of manners” He said quickly trying to recover his dignity “It’s just that Little Prince is looking at Draco with the exact same look as Marvolo did in the picture that father showed me, he said it was taken when Marvolo had just seen a houself for the first time” Explained Lucius, that got a lot of coughs and snickers from people but especially from Regulus who was watching his husband turn red.
Suddenly, he spotted Narcissa looking at him with mischief in her eyes and he knew she was about to say something he didn’t want to be known. “As I have not seen the picture I can’t agree with you dear husband. But from where I sit little Hadrian looks like little Regulus did when he got a kitten for his birthday, all confused and lost” Smiled Narcissa sneakily. Now it was Regulus’ turn to be embarrassed. He remembered that kitten really well, he had gotten it for his sixth birthday from his uncle Alphard. He had been so confused because he hadn’t even seen a cat before and didn’t know what to do with it. Sadly he didn’t have time to figure it out because as soon as everyone left Walburga killed it and told everyone that the cat had run away. He never got a pet after that.
As if reading his thoughts Marvolo pulled Regulus closer to himself and distracted everyone with talking to everyone about his first experience with houselves.
A sudden gasp came from Regulus, who had turned to look at the babies who had been left without active supervision for a few minutes. Everyone was shocked speechless when they saw what was happening on the playmat.
Draco, who had previously been playing with his dragon stuffie, was floating a few feet in the air and giggling while trying to catch his dragon which was…flying, like really moving its wings and moving around flying. And Hadrian, who before had just been laying there and observing his floating toys, was now babbling and waving his hands around.
“It’s Hadrian” said Regulus, who was the first to come out of his shock and was now smiling smugly “His eyes are glowing” He specified when everyone turned to him looking a little lost, clearly not having had as much time to analyse the situation as him. But looking closer they couldn’t do anything but come to the same conclusion, the little prince’s eyes were indeed had a beautiful emerald green hue around the edges.
Coming out of her frozen state Narcissa quickly moved over before something happened, the risk of Draco falling and getting hurt too great for her heart. However when she tried to take the stuffie to give it to Draco, who was now pouting (as much as a baby can), the stuffed creature bit her. That elicited more giggles and babbles from the babies who seemed to be having the time of their life, now observing the chaos they had caused.
Marvolo, who started moving just after Narcissa kneeled down and took the cooing, energetic baby into his arms. “You are going to be powerful just like your Papa and Daddy aren’t you little one?” Said Marvolo while snuggling his baby who in response just babbled and patted his nose.
For the rest of the day they let the babies play, this time with more supervision, and the adults discussed what this meant for Hadrian. Everyone knew he was going to be powerful just by looking at his parents but a 1 month old doing accidental magic is unheard of. Even Dumbledore has said that he did his first magical feat at 1 years old, at least according to his own stories. Regulus did his at 18 months and that was still considered early. Most children didn’t do magic until they were at least 3 years old. To do magic at only 1 month, Hadrian must have enormous amounts of potential and magic inside him.
While early magic was a sign of great power, it also worried Regulus and Marvolo a lot. Accidental magic isn’t controlled and it could turn very dangerous very quickly if something were to go wrong. Regulus and Marvolo still remembered some of their magical accidents, Regulus summoning all sorts of animals and books into his crib and bedroom, Marvolo pushing people down the stairs without even being near them. With that in mind and experience to back up their fears, Regulus and Marvolo decided to put alerts around Hadrian for when he does accidental magic so that he doesn’t hurt himself or anybody around him accidentaly.
They would have to teach their baby early on that being powerful isn’t always safe and that he would have to be careful while choosing who to show this true power to, while also teaching him how to use that power, luckily he had the best parents and aunts and uncles to do just that. But besides that they have to make sure he knows how proud of him they parents are.
