Marlene

Shit, shit, shit, shit shit

Marlene heard James fucking Potter honk outside her house for the hundredth time because she, like usual, was late. She had slept through her alarm, which was not out of character, and now she was already thirty minutes behind. Usually it wasn't a big deal for her, but James honking outside of her house like it was the fucking fifties and he was taking her on a date stressed her the fuck out. Plus, it was her first day of senior year.

She was running around with a toothbrush hanging out of her mouth, and pulling out every drawer of clothes onto her floor looking for a clean pair of socks. She starts letting various strings of curse words fall out of her mouth when she can’t find a single pair, when she distantly remembers accidentally kicking a pair under her bed last night . She starts running over to the bed and bends to and look underneath it.

She hears a snort and crooks her head sideways to see her little sister, Annie, watching her from her doorframe that she leaning on with her arms crossed.

“Having trouble, Marls?” She asks with a sweet voice and the smile of an angel.

Fucking bitch

“Nope, just running late, Annie Bannanie,” Marlene says while standing up straight after finding the socks and running over the the bathroom to throw her toothbrush on the counter and quickly spit the toothpaste out into the sink. She leaves the bathroom and smiles to find a falter in her sister’s grin at using her childhood nickname; at the same time, she sees her shoes and starts hopping around, trying to put them on. Her happiness quickly disappears when she falls over after tripping on something on the dirty floor.

The brat at the door starts laughing like a witch.

“I thought being late was normal for you?” Says her devil of a sibling sarcastically.

“Yea, it usually is, but my soccer meeting starts in…” Marlene trails off to look behind her at her alarm clock. She feels her face turn slack when she sees how much time she has left.

Fifteen minutes.

“SHIT!”

Her sister snorts one last time and turns around the leave the room.

HONK!

“FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!”

She chanted while pulling on a clean shirt and a random pair of jeans. She checked her hair in the mirror and thought good enough before running out of her room, down the stairs, and was almost to the front door when she heard a

“Marleeeene!”

Holy shit. I can not catch a fucking break.

“Yes, ma?!”

She screamed back while screwing her face up and trying not to cry out of pure frustration.

“Have fun, love you!”

“Love you t-” HONK!

“Ok, James is very mad at me. I've gotta go. Love you!” She screams behind her should while opening the front door and running her way through the front yard.

She looks into James’s car on the way and sees Sirius grinning from the passenger seat and James smiling and waving from the driver’s as if their stupid honking hadn't ruined her morning.

She flipped them off right before making it to James’s, or Monty’s; she should say, beat-up early 2000s SUV, and climbing into the backseat.

“Always so ladylike, our Marls.” Said Sirius, while looking over to his best friend like they were lovers and she was their child.

“Our sweet baby is making us so proud, I might cry. Oh no! Get the tissues!” Replied James, with an awful impression of a southern accent.

“I hate you two.” She said, crossing her arms and slouching very far down into the car seat.

“Oh, you love us.” replied James, looking over his shoulder and giving a wink before turning back around to twist the keys and start the car.

Marlene responded by sticking out her tongue at him like she was five.

“Buckle up, my sweetie pie,” said Sirius, turning around, scrunching up his face, and pinching at her cheeks like she was a baby.

Marlene swats his hand away and pulls down her seat belt, while he turns around cackling.

I'm an alligator

I'm a mama-papa coming for you.

“Turn this up!!” She screamed right when Sirius disconnected the radio and connected his phone instead.

“Sorry, my sugar plum,” He said, voice dripping with fake sweetness.

“Yeah, fuck you, you punk fairy.”

“I hope you know that I take that as a compliment.”

“Of course you would.” She replies, rolling her eyes.

And it's true, he would.

Marlene has known Sirius since they were eleven and started middle school together. She didn't know much about him at the time, other than the fact his family was wack as shit and that he had some of the most beautiful hair she had ever seen. That is until James had one conversation with him and immediately adopted them into the friend group, consisting of himself, Marlene, Peter, Lily, and now a brand new Sirius Black.

They immediately fell in love with the little heir, and with that came dealing with his dramatic flair. He really was a drama queen, always fake fainting into everyone’s arms and putting on theatrical performances of every emotion he experienced.

Marlene knows he left his family at fifteen to live with James, but other than that, she doesn't know much about the whole situation. James and Sirius keep those details to themselves, and Marlene doesn't see why they shouldn't.

James always had a knack for helping anyone he could—his “savior complex,” as Lily would call it.

“C’mon, it's like the Pheobe song!” Marlene remembers the redhead saying.

“Who?” asked Peter.

“You have gotta be fucking kidding me,” Sighed Lily, giving up on explaining her diagnosis to James.

The memory makes Marlene smile to herself.

She hears Sirius turn on a Taylor Swift song and smiles even wider when she sees Sirius and James reciting it to one another and screaming at their favorite parts.

Marlene loves James like she loves no other. He was kind and warm and never made her too mad (unlike Mr. Black), but she loved his parents more. Fleamont and Euphemia Potter were Marlene’s one true love.

Everything about the Potter family made Marlene happier than anything in the world.

Especially Effie’s cooking. And her pies. Oh, and her little sweaters she sews-

“MARLS!”

Shit. She feels caught.

“What Black?” She replies with a red face full of shame, worrying that Sirius could somehow read her mind and discover her love for his own mother, as if he didn't already know it. She was very obvious with her crush on the lovely woman.
“We're here,” he says with a very sweet smile, then quickly opens the door and jumps out like a maniac.

Marlene hears James chuckle while opening his door and quickly runs around the whole car to open her’s for her like he usually does.

When Marlene steps out of the car, while James goes in behind her to grab her bag, she sees Sirius spinning and stopping to send her finger guns.

James laughs while handing her her backpack and slamming the door shut.

Im never happier than when I'm with my boys. She thinks.

But then she sees a flash of red hair and a laugh that makes her feel warm inside, and she thinks, scratch that.

“Lily! My love! It's been so long!” she screeches while skipping to her best friend and throwing her arms around her neck.

“Oh, my lover, our distance has wounded me, but your presence has healed me and much more.” Replies the beautiful girl; she makes a loud smooch noise and fake kisses Marlene.

“You two saw each other last week,” said Peter, with a smile on his face.

“A week too long!” Exclaimed Marlene.

Marlene is suddenly hit with a wave of happiness and thinks

What was I even worried about? I've got my family! All is great.

“MCKINNON!”

Oh yea. That.
