Chapter 5
“Hey”, Denise said into the video chat. “How’s everything going?”
“Alright”, Katie said. “Slowly but surely, we’re putting this together.”
Denise nodded and then said, “How’s your new partner? Agent Foord, right?”
“She’s fine.”
“I know you don’t like working with someone, but-”
“She’s fine, Denise.”
“Okay”, Denise said. “I was expecting more push back from you.”
“She’s been…she’s been really helpful, actually.”
“That’s good to know”, Denise said. She paused and then said, “Easy on the eyes, too.”
“Denise-”
“I’m just saying. Don’t be afraid to get to know her a bit.”
“We went out to dinner.”
“Ooooohhh….somewhere nice?”
“It wasn't a date”, Katie said a bit defensively. “But yeah, she took me to a nice little bistro near the hotel.”
“Kinda sounds like a date.”
“It was business. We talked about the case.”
“And…?”
“Alright, we talked about some personal stuff too, got to know each other a bit.”
“Well that sounds promising”, Denise said and smiled.
“God, you’re annoying”, Katie said.
“Don’t take that tone of voice with me”, Denise chided lightly. “I’m still your boss. But I’m your friend, too.”
“We should keep things professional. That’s what you always say, right?”
“I know, but in your case, it may not be a bad idea to, you know, open up a bit.”
“Goodbye, Denise”, Katie said.
“Keep me posted-” Denise was saying, when Katie closed her laptop. She shook her head at Denise being nosey but smiled a bit to herself as she thought about Caitlin.

“What do we have?” Kim asked. She, Caitlin and Hayley were in Kim’s office.
“Not much besides the stolen passport, bank account and minivan”, Caitlin said.
“Any idea on where Macca and her top brass disappeared to?” Kim asked Hayley.
“No, but we’ll find them”, Hayley said.
“Any more on what Leah might be looking to transport? Explosives? Gun?”
“Tough to say”, Caitlin said. “I started looking on the darkweb, but could be anywhere.”
“Keep looking”, Kim said. She paused for a moment and then said, “How’s your new partner?”
“She’s…fine.”
“Definitely fine, if you ask me”, Hayley said. “Got that whole ‘bad girl’ thing going for her, in her leather jacket and all.”
“Hayles-”
“Glad she’s working out”, Kim said. “Deputy Director O’Sullivan says she’s a bit of a maverick. Doesn't like working with others. Got an icy exterior. Good to hear she thawed out a bit for you.”
“Yeah”, Caitlin smiled a bit. At that, Hayley raised her eyebrows suggestively, and Caitlin shot her a look.
“Keep digging”, Kim said. “We need to find out what Leah is up to, and fast. I like living”, she said with a small smile.
“Yes, Ma’am”, Caitlin said.
“We’ll find her, and Macca”, Hayley said, then she and Caitlin left Kim’s office.
“Bad girl thing?” Caitlin said.
“Well, she does”, Hayley said.
“Hayles-”
“I’m just saying, Foordy. Hey - you were the one complaining about not being able to keep a lover.”
“Jesus Christ”, Caitlin said, rolling her eyes, and walked ahead of Hayley.
“I’m just looking out for you”, Hayley laughed, then walked after Caitlin.
