Chapter 12
September 8th 1978
Regulus
"Narcissa, may I speak with you for a moment?" I whisper to my cousin—in my opinion, my most tolerable cousin. "Why of course." She says putting down her reading material and i gesture for her to follow me as I lead her to my room.
Once we're up the stairs and in my room I close the door and put up a silencing charm. I open my mouth to speak but am interrupted. "Oh shit Sev, you think this is the Black family inbreeding everyone always talks about." I turn my head and scowl at Barty who is apparently sitting cross legged on his bed, with Sev on his across the room. I rub my temple. "Get out."
He raises his hands in surrender. "Hey you do you Reggie, I'm just saying if you wanna do one of your cousins at least pick the one that isn't engaged—ow ok, ok I'm going!" He exclaims rubbing his head from the shoe I just threw at him. Sev gets up to leave as well but I put my hand up to him. "Stay."
He does choosing to take a seat on the bed once again. "What's this about Regulus?" Cissa asks narrowing her eyes. I run a hand through my hair. "I'm not really sure, there's just—" I stop. What do I even say? I have a weird feeling so can you help me stock a girl. "We don't have all day Black." Severous drawls.
"When Nott was—Nott said that Granger girl was an elemental." I explain and Narcissa raises her eyebrows as if to say, 'so?' "It's not adding up Narcissa, something isn't right. She's hiding something." I say and she scoffs shaking her head. "So what she's an elemental, I mean yes it's rare but possible, I don't think that means she's hiding something Regulus." She says with a laugh. "You're thinking too much into it Cousin."
Sev shakes his head. "I don't believe You’re thinking in to it enough." He says gruffly him to noticing what I had. "And why is that dear Severous." Narcissa asks crossing her arms. "Because Elemental Magic goes back centuries, all the way back to Morgana and Merlin, the first two elementals in history. And only decedents of Morgana and Merlin can have the ability." He says.
"Elementals usually show up in the purest of houses as you've seen with both your sister and cousin, but that is because most of the sacred twenty eight have at least some connection to Merlin or Morgana, however how little. Elementals string from Purebloods, and occasionally on a very rare occurrence they may show up weakly in halfbloods that connect to the sacred twenty eight. But a muggle born has less then zero chance of being an elemental and yet,"
"We have an elemental girl claiming to be a muggle born." He concludes and I see the wheels turning in Cissa's mind. "That makes no sense, Theodore must be mistaken, no pure blood would willingly go through the torture of being a muggle born if they could avoid it." She reasoned but it didn't change a thing in my mind. "The girl could just be unaware of the fact the she's a pure blood." Sev offers. I shake my head
"No it doesn't make sense, she has to know, Nott said she's the best student in their year and that she's excellent at DADA, and Elemental magic is covered in there." I tell them once again running a hand through my hair as I begin to paise. "No, she has to know, which means she's lying for a reason, which means she's hiding something."
I look between then to see then exchanging a look. "What?" I ask throwing my hands up. Cissa gives me an odd look before turning to Severous. "Severous would you mind giving me a moment with my cousin?" She asks and he immediately uncrosses his legs and jumps from the bed.
"It would be my pleasure."
Narcissa
Severous leaves the room after his gruff reply and I'm left alone with Darling Regulus. I take a moment to study my younger cousin and I can practically hear the boys mind moving. "Why are you so worried about this girl, cousin?" I ask as he resumes his pacing.
He shakes his head. "I don't know, I just have this feeling." I chuckle. "And here I thought you believed Divination was rubbish, never thought you's be the one to make desisions about a feeling." I teased him, but in reality, I felt it too.
I noticed the girl, everyone noticed her, she was everywhere. She was odd. Not in the behavioral sense, she acted perfectly normal, but as My little cousin had just put it, the girl gives me an off feeling. When I look at her I see a puzzle, A mystery. It's a good thing im good at solving both.
"You know It's not like that Cissa, god knows divination will always be a pile of bullshit to me—"
"Language!" I scold but he ignores it. "But something about her doesn't sit right with me. She's hiding something, and I don't know why it bothers me but it does." He sighs finally ceasing his pacing to take a seat on a bed I believe to belong to Severous's.
His eyes are trained to the ground when I kneel in front of him taking his face in my hands, making his grey eyes connect with my blue ones. "Do you trust me cousin?" I ask and he nods. "Of course." He doesn't hesitate.
"Then leave it to me."
Hermione
We're sitting in the class Remus once taught with pride. The Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is quite proficient from what I can tell. It seems the DADA Professor curse doesn't go back this far.
The professor is a young man who seems to be around mid thirties, is quite tall, and has chocolate brown hair and a name I can't quite remember. The professor seems quite competent in his teaching methods, he too—like Remus—makes it so there's never a dull moment in his class, I find the class quite enjoyable so far.
"Our main focus this year, will be a magic you've never studied before, it's the type of magic that very few can master but everyone should know how to defend themselves against it should you ever be against someone who knows how to use it." I find myself very intrigued, as I've never heard of such magic—it sounds like a challenge, one I'm willing to take.
"This magic, is a very old one—in fact it is dated back to the time of the druids—and for those who aren't familiar with the term, druids we're the first magic users in existence, the first witch's and wizards in history. The druids trace back to first century B.C, as that is when they first historically showed up." I had read quite a bit about the Druids as they were always a subject of interest to me, it makes me even more curious of what so called 'powerful magic' from the time of the Druids we will be learning of.
I watch the professor with hooded eyes, eager to learn of the strange magic. "There are only two powerful figures in wizarding history who were known to have mastered the magic, and it's only because they created it." My anticipation grows with every second as I wait for the man to just spit it out. He chuckles. "Alright, I'm just going to spit it out now because miss Granger looks like she's about to strangle me—" I blush as many eyes move from the professor to me. "Alright, the main focus you will be studying in Defense Against the Dark Arts, it Elemental Magic."
Fuck.
Regulus
I watch the girl as she instantly pales. I don't see what the worry is for it's not like we're back in the salem witch trials where they'd burn you at the stake. Being an elemental is a gift from the gods. "The first Elementals in history were Merlin Wyllt and Morgana Pendragon, the two most powerful people the Wizarding world has yet to harvest. Merlin was a boy of druid descent—his father was also one of the last dragon masters, but that is a subject of later date—It was expected for Merlin to have magic as it ran in his blood, but what wasn't expected was that the boy be born with an entirely new type of magic." Our professor explains, though I—as an elemental—already researched the topic and heard the story.
"As you are accustomed to, the druids—the original witches and wizards—had to use a certain incantation or wand movement to use magic, Merlin and Morgana didn't. With their birth, a new type of magic was born. Both had magic just at the tip of their finger tips, they didn't need an incantation, a wand movement, or even a wand!" The professor exclaims excitedly—clearly this is an interesting topic for the bloke.
There were gasps around the room and I roll my eyes. Dramatics. "Morgana was completely druid born—unlike merlin who was a half blood—but was taken at birth by the Muggle king—Uther Pengragon—at the slaying of her parents. It was unbenouced to the king that the infant he'd taken to be his ward would have magic running through her veins. Morgana was the more powerful of the two, they say she could make lightning storms start in her sleep and could make entire mountains crumble with a glare." If only this part were just dramatics.
A Gryffindor girl I don't know and don't care to know raises her hand. "Are elementals considered a creature? I mean their magic is completely different, would they really Even be a witch or wizard?" I roll my eyes at the ditz. What a dumb question. The professor opens his mouth to answer but I decide I owe it to myself to set the twit right. "Elementals are not creatures, they are witch's and wizards." I spit and all attention turns to me.
"Witches and wizards are supposedly those made by the gods, they were created as a second—more favored species, which is why they got the gift of magic. Elementals are the witch's and wizards closest to the gods, they were favored more and because of it they were blessed with stronger magic than the average witch or wizard." I state crossing my arms.
The professor nods. "Ah, yes, Mr Black is quite correct, they are witches and wizards, just more powerful ones. You would not considered them creatures as you would a veela or werewolf, instead you would consider them the same you would a metemorphugus, a witch or wizard with a different set of powers." I steal a glance at Lupin to see him frowning as Sirius pats him on the shoulder.
Ah yes, I am aware of his dirty little secret. Due to some unfortunate events last year caused by a horribly executed prank, Severous came spewing about Lupins little furry problem. I can see how being called nothing but a creature could be depremental to one's mental health, I just personally do not care.
"Now as I was saying, Merlin Wyllt and Morgana Pendragon were the first elementals in history—and thus far, the most powerful. Elemental powers are pasted down only to those were are some type of descendent of either Merlin or Morgana, and the gift is the ability to control the elements—can someone tell me what the four elements are?"
He asks gesturing to us. Evans raises her hand. "Earth, fire, water, and air." She answers and the professor claps. "Very good Miss Evans, five points to gryffindor." Sirius gives her a high five and i roll my eyes. Anyone could have known that. "Now Elementals can control the Elements, but it takes a very powerful one to be able to control all of them. Truth be told, no elemental has been able to do so other than Morgana and Merlin themselves. Usually an elemental starts with one most prominent Element that comes to them naturally, and then over time they may gain the strength to take on another—and then on very, very, rare cases, another."
Unfortunately. This fact is sadly accurate, as both Bella and myself have been unable to master all four elements, much to our dismay. I myself have been able to master both Fire and Water, where as Bella has both Fire and Air under her belt. Neither of us can even attempt at earth. Lupin raises his hand. "Yes, Mr Lupin?"
He clears his throat. "I'm just wondering Professor, well, how do they do it?" Never thought I'd hear Lupin ask a dumb question—but then again he is friends with my brother. "Do what Mr Lupin?" The professor asks making Lupin rub the back of his neck nervously. "Well, I meant, I mean, like you said we have to use incantations and spells and wands for our magic to work, but they can just do it, but there must be some process, something they have to do right?"
"Well, were you aware Mr Lupin, that Accidental magic stems from Elemental magic?" At the shake of Lupins head our professor continues. "Well, for Elementals it's as simple as accidental magic but more powerful and extreme, they simply envision doing it and it happens—but to be clear they can only do so when it comes to the elements, any other magic they would have to use a spell."
The professor continues to drown on and on about facts I already know and Theories that have already been proven.
Very informative.
Harry
"And that will be all, class dismissed." The professor finally says and I pack my things as quickly as possible to run after Hermione who is already halfway out the door. Bloody hell she moves fast. I get the last of my things in my bag and dash out behind her.
She's speed walking and I have to half run to catch up with her. "Mione!" I shout from a few feet away and she whips around almost giving me whiplash. She looks frazzled, her fingers clutch the strap of her beaded bag in a tight grip, and her eyes are wide and they're flicking around nervously. "Are you ok?" I ask softly knowing to read carefully when her powers are involved.
Mione never really did like using that type of magic, even though she's always been capable of it, she always tried to limit using it. I've only ever seen the magic come out in extreme situations, and she always hated talking about it so we never did. Anything relating to Elemental magic always got her in an odd mood.
Suddenly she smiles. "Of course, everything's fine." Her expression doesn't give anything off, anyone watching the conversation play out would believe her, and normally so would I, if it wasn't for the glazed look in her eye that shows she's occluding it into the deepest depths of her mind. I'm worried for her.
"Well, if that's all I really do have to—" I cut her off mid sentence and grab her arm. I lower my voice as not to be heard by passbyers. "You really need to stop doing that Hermione, it's not healthy. You've been occluding everything away since we got the news about Fred, if you keep this up it's just going to make it worse when your walls break, and they will break." I tell her, desperation for my friend leaking into my voice.
Her expression changes, as she seems to comprehend that I won't believe her happy act. She's still occluded, but now it's so all that shows is a mask of cold indifference, completely impossible to read. "I'm perfectly fine thank you. I can take care of my own wellbeing, I don't need you telling me how to handle things." She says shrugging off my hand with a glare before walking off.
I huff out a breath, running a hand frustratedly through my hair. I know this isn't her, that she's just grieving, but it doesn't make trying to help her any less frustrating.
I think back to the first time Hermione had occluded so much, and then to the day her walls came crashing down and grimace. Fourth year, right after Cedric died. I'd never seen my best friend like that until that day.
Then I think about the last time she'd occluded like that and the hell that broke loose when it all fell. Hermione had pretty much occluded her way through the whole war, while we were horcrux hunting, while we were on the run, at shell cottage, even during the final battle. That is, until the wrong person died, that's when all hell broke loose.
I still remember the look on her face when she found Snape's dead body, the look of pure animalistic rage—I'd never seen anything like it. Hermione'd told us to go on without her, that she had a score to settle. She'd still had that look in her eyes when she dragged his body to the battle field, tears welling in her eyes and summoned a lightning storm so big, it wiped out fifty death eaters.
I'd never seen her use lightning power before that—due to reasons I'd rather not think about. But the point is, if that is what happened because of her grief for snape, I worry the hell that will fall upon us for Fred. "Ready mate?" I jump as my godfather slings his arm over my shoulder. He looks at me with a grin and a lightbulb lights in my head as I recall my thoughts from our first night here.
She needs Someone....
