the old codger
It's been eight years since my papa was arrested for a murder he never committed. Eight whole years since I last saw my cousin, eight years since Harry lost his parents.....
After that fateful night it was just me and my dad, Remus. My dad once told me when I was 7, we were moving house again for the 3rd time that year and I found an old photo album. We have had to move a lot over the years, you see my dad was bitten when he was five and that causes him to turn into a wolf every full moon. The condition is called lycanthropy I know all about it and am a unregistered animagus meaning I can change at will to turn in to an animal, my form is a black wolf dog, the first time my dad saw me in this form he cried because I looked like my papa's animagus form with the only difference being that I would be bigger than him as I grow up and a white-grey star on the side of my muzzle. His condition makes it's hard for him to get and hold down a job for long, so we move around. Anyway, the album had photos of my fathers and Harry's parents from when they were in school along with pictures of when we were born up until the night of Halloween 1981. He told me that Harry was meant to have come and lived with us as my fathers are his godparents. Alas, that didn't happen because that stupid old codger named Albus Dumbledore got involved and sent him to live with his mum's Muggle sister.
I can't say I remember anything other than very vague bits of information and their faces as I was only a year old when I last saw the Potter family but I do feel like I miss them and have a weird connection with Harry. I can't explain it but it's definitely there. I told my dad once he said that he understands and that Harry and I were inseparable from the moment I was born.
Oh, before I get carried away my name is Blaze, Blaze Phoenix Lupin-Black and yes, I am the daughter of two of the four most renowned Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry's pranksters. My fathers are Remus John Lupin and Sirius Orion Black or you may know them as messrs moony and padfoot. The other marauders as you know we're prongs aka James Fleamont Potter, my uncle and Wormtail who is Peter Pettigrew the man who took away my chance of knowing my dad and the reason my cousin has had to grow up without his parents. Anyway, let's get back on track and back to the present. I'm sure what the old codger is saying is VERY interesting and important. Note my sarcasm.
My father and myself are currently sitting in overly stuffed and eye bleed worthy floral print armchairs that Mr dumb-as-a-door insists people sit in when they are in his office at Hogwarts, waiting for said old codger to arrive. Why are we here you ask? Well apparently he had to speak with us about something of the utmost importance, not that I believe he has anything to say that important and by the unamused and disgruntled look on my fathers face he seems to be thinking the same as I.
When the old twit finally does arrive he takes forever to settle down and wastes time offering us sweets which I know from what I have been told on countless occasions by both Minnie, Also known as Minerva McGonagall who has been looking after me since I was very little and works as the transfiguration professor, and my dad are laced with mind and or emotion altering potions. I can also feel it in the air surrounding them. It's nauseating to think someone who is meant to be all things good can control people like this without a heavy conscience. "Ah, it's so good to see you again my boy and you to miss Blaze, my haven't you grown" dumbledore addressed us, I just rolled my eyes, leaned back and folded my arms. "You too, headmaster but can we hurry this along? The full moon is in two days and I'm sure you are well aware of how tired I got the week before" my father said. "Yes, yes that is actually part of the reasoning behind this meeting" Albus said before making tea for himself causing both my dad and myself to be getting frustrated with him.
Once he had finished making his overly sweet tea he finally continued "you see my boy I need you to carry out some very important work-" I had had enough of his Rambling on and interrupted him. " For Merlin's sake, get on with it, why have you called us here" by the small snort that dad covered by coughing it made him laugh but by the unamused look Dumbledore is giving me he obviously didn't think so. "Right, as I was saying I need you Remus to infiltrate a werewolf pack in Yorkshire, they have so far been seen as neutral in this coming war but we need them to stay so or join us." Dumbledore finally says. "Fine, when do I leave and what time is Minerva expecting Blaze to arrive? '' Dad sighed. "Oh no my dear boy Minerva will not be having Blaze. I have made other arrangements for her, you leave the morning of the full moon" Dumbledore announced with that annoying twinkle in his blue eyes. "What are these other arrangements you have for me" I huffed not trusting this old bat one bit. "You will be going and living in the Muggle world with the Dursley family for the next 6 months" Dumbledore informed me. "YOU WHAT!" both dad and I exclaimed. " lNo, no absolutely not. You know of Blaze's condition! There is no way I'm leaving her with people I do not know" dad said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Ah but these people are not unknowledgeable about magic after all Mrs Dursley is Lily's sister and they do have Harry in their care" Dumbledore said in a matter of fact tone. Dad looked at me asking through our bond asking would you be ok with that ? Will it affect your condition? I smiled at him and replied if what you have said about my and Harry's bond I think I should be ok he slightly nodded and turned back to a confused looking Albus "fine, but I will be picking her up as soon as my mission is done. "Dad glared at Albus "I wouldn't have it any other way, that's why I said that length of time" Albus said, shocking both of us into silence for a few minutes.
Once we recovered all hell broke loose and my father and I shouted at the headmaster for his selfishness and idiocy. I may have gotten a bit carried away and used some profanity to get my point across. By the time we finally relented to the old, manipulative cots plan. I was beyond annoyed and sent to calm down and go see Aunt Minnie while my father went over the last details of his mission and my care arrangements.
That night when we finally got home we were exhausted and I willingly accepted the idea of cuddling in bed with dad watching a film as who knows when we may get to do it again.
