Second year, chapter 7

Just like the white winged dove,
Sings a song, sounds like she’s singing.

Sam searched through the train as it began to leave from the station. She could see her dad through the window, waving at her. She gave him a small smile and wave before continuing her search for Draco. She wanted to find him and ask why he hadn’t sent one single letter. She was both worried and angry at him. They had been so close at Hogwarts and she wondered why they shouldn’t be close during the summer as well.
Sam soon found Draco in a compartment, alone and staring out the window, his arms crossed over his chest. She opened the door, startling him and making him look her way. He smiled brightly at her, his shoulders falling like a great weight had been lifted from them. He immediately stood and embraced her. Sam blinked, confused, but hugged him back.
Sam wanted to ask about the letters, but before she could Draco pulled away. “I’m sorry I didn’t write back,” He said to her, going and sitting back down, Sam following. “I was super busy.”
Sam nodded, still feeling a bit uneasy. “Thats alright,” She mumbled, putting her trunk above her seat. As she sat down next to Draco, she spotted the edge of a bruise sticking out from under the collar of his shirt. She frowned. “What happed there?” She asked him. Draco looked and saw what she was looking at. He shook his head.
“Nothing.” He mumbled. Sam couldn’t help but feel strange about everything that had just happened in the past five minutes. Draco was playing with his hands, something he had never done before. He was looking around nervously, and he had a new haunted look in his eyes. It made Sam’s skin crawl. Something had happened to Draco, and she wanted to know what, she wanted to help him.
The door to the compartment opened, and Sam looked to see Hermione come in, looking around. She huffed and turned her eyes to Draco and Sam.
“Have either of you seen Harry or Ron? I can’t find those two anywhere!” She said, looking rather stressed. Draco shook his head, and Sam let out a scoff that sounded like a laugh. Hermione gave her a hard look.
“I know you and the boys don’t get along, but I’m still allowed to be worried about them, you prick!” And with that she left, slamming the compartment door. Sam looked to Draco and both of them started laughing.

POV: Draco
Draco was so relived to be back at Hogwarts. Being there meant he was safe and away from Mulciber. He truly felt free there. He sat with Sam at the Slytherin table as they waited for the first years to be sorted so they could finally eat dinner. Sam was leaning on his arm, looking exhausted and board. They would clap whenever a Slytherin was placed, but they still just wanted dinner. Finally, the last kid was placed, and the food appeared before them. Sam sat up and began filling her plate, Draco doing the same. He was starving, not having a proper meal since first year. Over the summer, Mulciber had paid more for his father to limit his meals. Mulciber had told him he liked him better when he was skinny.
The food was heavenly like normal, and Draco found himself already excited for the new school year.
“So, I was thinking about going out for the Quidditch team this year.” He told Sam as they ate. Sam raised her eyebrows looking at him brightly.
“Thats great! What position would you want?” She asked. Draco had thought about it all summer. He would often think about Quidditch when Mulciber was around, using it as a distraction for himself.
“Seeker, I want to beat Potter.” He said with a smirk. Sam laughed.
“You better be good then, because as much as I hate to admit it, Potters bloody good.” She told him. Draco nodded, and shrugged.
“I know I’m better then him.”

After dinner, Draco sat in his dorm, Sam with him. Sam had brought one of her muggle record players and was playing a song for him, while smiling, waiting to see how he liked it. It was a record by a band called ‘Heart’ the album was ‘Little Queen’ and she had insisted on showing him all the songs on it. Apparently she had discovered the band over the summer, and could only think about showing Draco. Draco wasn’t a fan of muggle music out of fear of his father, but for Sam, he was willing to listen to anything. His favorite song so far was ‘Say Hello’ he really enjoyed that one.
When the record stopped playing, Sam looked up at him and waited. Draco smiled. “I really like it,” He told her. Sam looked ecstatic.
“Isn’t it just wonderful?!” She said, getting off his bed so she could pace around while she ranted. “The way they play is just so amazing, and I love how the voices sound!”
Draco smiled as he watched her ramble. He knew she could go on for hours about her favorite bands, especially if it was T.Rex. She loved them. After a little longer, Sam finished her rant and sat by Draco after she put another record on, this one the David Bowie one. The song ‘Heroes’ played while they laid side by side. It was peaceful, and Draco felt himself forgetting about all the shameful things he had done that summer. It was just him and Sam, and thats all he ever wanted.
