Chapter 5. First Year.

“Oi!”

“What’re you doing here?”

“Merlin’s pants, Sienna!”

Came the shrieks of the boys in Remus’ dorm as soon as Sienna opened the door.

“Calm down, I’m just grabbing Remus’ books.” Sienna laughed at them.

She had walked in on them just waking up, and all the boys screamed at her.

“I didn’t see anything, I swear.” Sienna shook her head. “Not like there’s anything to see anyway.” She mumbled.

“How is Remus?” Sirius asked.

“He’s fine, he’s asleep right now. His fever is almost gone. Pomfrey reckons he’ll be out this evening or so.” Sienna responded, walking over to the only vacant bed, assuming it’s Remus’ and sorting through the drawers.

“He put his books in the third drawer.” James helped Sienna.

“Thanks, James.” Sienna smiled. She took out three books that looked thick enough to keep Remus company for the day.

“What time is it?” Peter asked, looking a bit lost.

“Almost seven.” Sienna answered. “Come down for breakfast, I’m not going alone.”

“Alright, thanks.” Peter responded. Sienna smiled.

“Right,” Sienna made her way to the door. “I’ll be waiting downstairs. How much time do you need to get ready, girls?”

Peter was making his way to the bathroom, James was still in bed, and Sirius was standing at the mirror patting down his hair.

“At least 15 minutes,” Sirius said. “My hair’s not cooperating.” He whined.

“Okay ladies. 20 minutes and I’m going without you, alright?” Sienna chuckled.

“Yeah, cheers.” James grinned.

Sienna nodded and went out the door. She made her way over to her own dorm, and walked inside.

Lily was already awake, brushing her hair, Marlene wasn’t in the room, and Mary was still drooling on her pillow.

“Sienna! Where have you been?” Lily greeted Sienna.

“I was down at the hospital wing visiting Remus. And just now in the boy’s dorm, grabbing his books.” She replied.

“Is Remus alright?” Lily wondered.

“Yeah, he’s okay. Asleep. His fever’s almost gone, I reckon he’ll be fine by this afternoon.”

“Morning, Sie! You coming down for breakfast?” Marlene chirped, coming out of the bathroom.

“Yeah. Told the boys to meet us downstairs in 20 minutes.” Sienna smiled.

“Alright perfect!” Lily said, going back to making her hair.

Marlene strode over to Mary’s bed, grabbed a pillow and smacked her face. As soon as Mary opened her eyes she looked pissed.

“MARLENE MCKINNON, I WAS SLEEPING!” Mary shrieked.

“I KNOW, THAT’S WHY I WOKE YOU UP!” Marlene yelled back.

“DON’T DO THAT AGAIN!”

“DON’T OVERSLEEP AGAIN!”

“IT WAS FIVE EXTRA MINUTES, GIVE ME A BREAK!”

“Girls, come on.” Lily tutted. “Stop that.”

Both M’s fell silent. Sienna snorted at how afraid of Lily they were. Unfortunately for Sienna, Lily heard the snort and gave her a death stare. Sienna didn’t dare to speak until they were all ready and heading down to breakfast with the boys.

“So no Quidditch practice this morning, Marlene and James?” Sienna asked the two Quidditch-obsessed maniacs.

“Not today, no.” James responded, shaking his head sadly.

“Longbottom says we’re in over our heads.” Marlene rolled her eyes.

“Really, he ought to be training us instead of putting us down.” James started his rant. “If he wants a good team, he ought to teach us how to be one!”

“That’s what I’ve been thinking!” Marlene joined in.

Sienna quickly tuned them out, as she realised her mistake in asking the question, and while James and Marlene were busy talking to each other about Frank, Sienna slipped into the conversation between Lily and Peter.

“Anyway, I know we haven’t had Herbology yet, but I just know the professor’s great. I saw her tending to the Mandrakes last night, and she really seems like she knows what she’s doing.” Peter was saying.

“That’s great! I’m really excited for Herbology. Oh, by the way, my parents got me a new chess set, and I saw you playing by yourself the other night. We can play together tonight if you want?” Lily responded.

“Merlin, yes of course.” Peter was grinning ear to ear.

As the conversation slowly morphed into chess techniques Sienna tuned them out too. Her last chance were Sirius and Mary. She speed-walked up a few feet to where Sirius and Mary were walking, and quickly realised they weren’t talking at all. They were walking in extreme awkward silence, and Sienna didn’t want to be sucked into awkwardness either.

She settled on just slipping in between them and chatting non-stop about her favourite books she had read until they got to the Great Hall.

The seven of them sat down, and Sienna started piling food onto a plate for her brother. Eggs; scrambled and boiled, two sausages, beans, three pieces of toast; butter, jam, and hazelnut spread, and then Sienna set the plate aside.

“Oh, did anyone do the History of Magic homework?” Peter asked.

“Yeah.” Sienna mumbled, her mouth full.

“Yup!” Lily chirped, taking a sip of pumpkin juice.

“Shit, I forgot.” Mary smacked her forehead.

“I think I did it.” Sirius looked thoughtfully into the distance.

“Can I copy off someone? Just this once?” Peter pleaded.

“Yeah, me too, please?” Mary nodded. “Sienna?” She turned to the other girl and was met with a lovely sight of sausages being stuffed into a mouth.

“Sure.” Sienna responded once she’d finished chewing. “And Pete, you can copy too.”

“Thank you, Sie!” Mary grinned and winked at Sienna.

“Cheers, girl Lupin.” Peter smiled.

James and Sirius were busy talking about something or other, and Sienna noticed Peter kept on glancing at them as if hoping they would include him in their conversation.

Sienna made a mental note to remember to ask about that, and finished up her food. She carefully took the plate of food for Remus, and bid everyone goodbye. Walking along the Gryffindor table she noticed a basket of chocolate bars and grabbed three for Remus.

Remus loves chocolate. It’s a fact. But the truth behind it is actually quite sad. Remus started eating bucket fulls of chocolate a few months after he was bitten, because he read that chocolate was poisonous for dogs. He told Sienna that he hoped that the chocolate would get rid of his lycanthropy, one way of another. At the time, Sienna didn’t think much of it, thinking they were just kids living out fantasies, but six years later and he was still chowing down chocolate bars any chance he got, she knew it was deeper.

In a few minutes she was already at the hospital wing, and walking towards Remus’ bed.

“Hey, Remmy. Here’s your food.” She said, placing the plate on the table beside his hospital bed. “And chocolate.”

“Cheers, Sie.” Remus smiled. “And my books?”

“Oh yeah.” Sienna reached into her bag. “Here.” She said, pulling out three books and stacking them on the end of Remus’ bed.

“Thanks.”

“How’ve you been feeling?” Sienna asked, sitting on the side of his bed.

“Fine.”

Remus.”

“Exhausted.”

“Yeah.” Sienna nodded.

“Sienna, dear!” Madam Pomfrey came bobbing out of her office. “Would you mind leaving Remus to relax? You have classes soon, anyhow.”

“Oh, yeah, of course.” Sienna smiled politely, and waved goodbye to Remus. “Love you.”

“Love you too, Sie.”

Classes that day were pretty much uneventful. Although, Sienna fell asleep in Potions because she was up most of the night. Luckily, Marlene let Sienna sleep and hid it pretty well from Slughorn by covering her with a book.

At lunch, Sienna brought another plate up to Remus, and this time Sirius, James and Peter came with her as they wanted to visit Remus.

“How are you?” James asked.

“Great.” Remus responded, and when Sienna shot him a look, he added, “Honestly. I’m feeling much better, thanks.”

They spent the rest of lunch sitting with Remus and talking, and explaining the homework to him and all that boring school stuff.

And after, they had their first Herbology lesson where Peter was top student. He answered every question, did everything correct, and it was obvious he really enjoyed the subject. Sienna was honestly entranced, watching Peter being so comfortable in that greenhouse.

Then, History of Magic where Professor Binns seemed very interested in how Sienna’s, Mary’s and Peter’s homework was pretty much the same, but he didn’t say anything, and the three of them were so glad they got away with it.

Then Transfiguration with Professor McGonnagall, who Sienna loved. She was strict, but at the same time very laid-back. And she knew how to teach without it seeming boring but also actually educational. And Sienna almost fell asleep again near the end, and McGonnagall just looked at her and smiled, knowing why. Sienna liked that.

At dinner Mary, Lily and Marlene were in a very heated debate over which Ravenclaw boy was most attractive, and Sienna was not participating. Sirius and James were whispering again, glancing around every once in a while to make sure no one was listening. Peter was looking incredibly gloom again, and Sienna felt sorry for him.

Her and Peter talked a bit about books and plants, and then Sienna brought up dinner for Remus again. She sat with him all afternoon, and Pomfrey was finally happy to let Remus out. He was delighted, and showed his gratitude and happiness by locking himself in the boy’s dorm room and reading until he went to sleep.

Sienna spent the afternoon doing homework while Remus was upstairs reading. She finished her essay for Transfiguration and started on her Charms work. Mary went straight up to their dorm after they got back from dinner, and Lily and Marlene sat at the fireplace sofa and chatted. Sienna preferred to work by herself and in silence, so she really didn’t care where any of her friends were.

Although, Sirius, James and Peter were not seen since dinner, and Sienna had a vague feeling it had something to do with the whispering at mealtimes.

As Sienna was finishing up her Charms work, another first year girl called Emily Peterson came up to her.

“Hi, Sienna right?” She smiled.

“Yeah, hey.” Sienna nodded. “What’s your name, sorry?”

“Emily Peterson, I sit behind you in Charms, and I just noticed you’re really good at it and I was wondering if you could help me with my homework?” Emily said the whole sentence in one breath, and exhaled heavily after she was done.

Sienna was a tiny bit taken aback, but also kind of glad she was able to help. She didn’t expect to be good at any subjects, (academic stuff was usually up to Remus) so she was extremely proud of herself to learn that others saw her as a person who could help.

Emily sat down beside Sienna and the two started working on their work, Sienna helping Emily here and there. Once they were done, Emily grinned and thanked Sienna many many times, and left. It all happened quite quickly, Sienna didn’t know what to think of it. All she knew was that she was happy, and was still happy going to bed.

She showered, put her hair in a loose plait, said goodnight to anyone who could hear her, and was asleep in 5 minutes.
