It definitely wasn’t the first time that Lily Evans heard or caught sight of Mary Macdonald.
Mary Macdonald had built quite the fame with their Gossip Girl obsessed high school. Mary has been mentioned countless of times on the famous blog; most of the mentions being about any person she got in her bed every weekend.
Lily had been in the same class as Mary since the beginning of term, when she transferred schools. She switched her public school in favor of the fancy Upper East Side school, since her mother was pretty obsessed with the status their family held.
It was, however, the first time that Lily actually spoke a word to her since meeting each other 3 months ago.
It was also definitely the first time that Mary noticed Lily, if her asking Lily’s name was anything to go by.
“My name is Lily,” was her bitter answer to the question. Even tho Lily definitely upgraded to a different society, it didn’t make a single difference how the high school queens acted.
Flashing a dangerous smile, Mary invited Lily to dance. In the middle of the room. To some David Guetta remix of all music to exist.
Lily shook her head. “No way am I going to move any limb in my body over this music.” She shouted over the music that seemed to come from every corner of the room.
When it became clear that Mary couldn’t understand a word of what she said, she beckoned her over and repeated it in her ear.
It was then that she noticed how close they were. And that her lips were basically touching Mary’s ear. And how hot it was in the busy crowd.
Mary moved her head so that her lips were almost touching Lily’s ear. “Follow me.”
Lily was thankful to escape all the high schoolers, but it didn’t escape her notice that the air around them didn’t seem to cool down at all.
Mary was leading the way with her eyes focused on the hallway in front of them. That gave Lily the change to notice the way that the crimson red dress that Mary was wearing, hugged her curves perfectly. And travel her eyes all the way down her body to look at the shoes that must have been around a couple of 1000 dollars.
The 20-dollar dress that Lily was wearing definitely didn’t compare to that.
It took her bumping into Mary to realize she had stopped walking and turned around. Which resulted to Lily’s face fitting perfectly between Mary’s boobs with the height difference caused by Mary’s high heels.
Lily felt her cheeks burn up and stumbled back to only bump into more people. Where were all these people constantly coming from?
When she took in the rest of her surroundings, it became clear that they were queuing for something. Trying to look for the cause of the queue resulted in her gaze catching Mary’s eyes. Who looked very amused. Who was she to make fun of the fact that she didn’t even try to warn Lily that she would stop walking?
“If you wanted to have a look at them, you could’ve just asked you know?” Was apparently the thought which made her smile.
Lily rolled her eyes and didn’t bother to comment. Ah. She shouldn’t have forgotten who she was talking to. The queen of Constance Billard. Typical.
“So what kind of music do you want to hear?”
Apparently, Mary couldn’t take a hint. It was also only than that Lily figured out they were queuing in front of some DJ stand.
Leave it to Marlene to take Lily to some high school party fancy enough to have a literal DJ.
The line was moving fast and Lily knew what she wanted to hear.
“Taylor Swift. And I swear if you hate on her, I will not speak to you ever again.”
Mary merely chuckled lightly.
Lily already felt annoyance settle in. “Ah, so you are the type that thinks Taylor is way too overrated.”
“No definitely not, I just thought it is such a coincidence that I seem to have met another huge swiftie. I was just about to suggest You Belong With Me. Just the vibe this party needs right?”
Lily just stared at her in shock. Maybe Mary wasn’t so bad after all. Like anyone that listens to Taylor should at least have some kind of a personality. “Yeah, you are absolutely right.”
It was just then that the couple of kids before them walked away and Lily and Mary followed in the same direction after requesting You Belong With Me and having a long argument with the DJ why it should be Taylor’s version specifically.
“What do you want to drink?”
One of the best parts of these fancy school parties, was that Lily could get drunk for free. She definitely wasn’t going to miss out on that opportunity.
“Anything that’s gonna make this crowd and music bearable. Fast.”
Wearing a beautiful smile, Mary turned to the bar to get their drinks, leaving Lily awkwardly standing alone.
Coincidentally, the whole reason she even was at the party just passed her and she grabbed Marlene’s arm to make her stop. Lily felt required to show up here for the birthday girl, but Marlene already ditched her after 5 minutes in favor of getting the attention of some girl she had liked for quite a while.
When Marlene turned she hugged Lily and introduced her to Dorcas Meadowes. Ah, so she did manage to get her attention. And looking at their disheveled state, it was assumable that things went a little further than only a dance.
She felt someone tap her shoulder and turning around she found Mary’s gaze. She handed her a drink and when Lily went to take a sip of it, she started coughing and heard Mary’s laugh in her ear.
“You wanted something strong, so I got you something strong.”
“You didn’t even bother mixing this with anything, did you?”
Mary mischievous smile told her more than enough. Lily felt a mirroring smile starting to grow on her face. The drink didn’t taste that bad. And Mary did listen to her. And the evening was definitely starting to become more bearable.
Lily found herself standing next to Marlene, while Mary and Dorcas were enthusiastically talking to one another; they have known each other for years apparently.
“So, I thought you were way above all the rich kids in our school.” Marlene glanced sideways at her before continuing staring at Dorcas. Lily couldn’t blame her, noticing that her own gaze wandered towards Mary way too many times.
“Well you are also one of the rich kids and you turned out to be just fine. Plus, she listens to Taylor Swift.”
Marlene shook her head with a small smile playing on her lips. “Ah well, did you kiss her yet?”
“MARLS. Stop. Not everyone just walks up to someone at a party and manages to fuck them and return to the party in the span of 30 minutes. Or am I mistaken and did nothing happen between you two?”.
“Well, you’re not mistaken. But it didn’t take 30 minutes, more like 25 minutes if you forget the time that I needed to actually find her. Always running away.”
“She better doesn’t let you think that she actually got me that easy. She did have to work for it, believe me or not. Now, let me get the birthday girl another drink.” Came Dorcas’s voice, while she practically dragged Marlene away. Mary looked after them with a unrecognizable emotion on her face. She covered it easily and turned to Lily again.
“So how long have you known Dorcas? She never mentioned you or I definitely would’ve remembered it.” Lily had the idea that her voice had a dangerous flirty tone in it and was just about to explain how she actually never met her before, when a new song started to play.
Mary had a delightful look in her eyes and started pulling Lily towards the dancefloor, with the intro of You Belong With Me playing.
Lily knocked the rest of her drink down her throat and placed her glass on the closest table with a sour look on her face. The sweet liquor did cause her to loosen up a bit. Lily had never had a great tolerance to alcohol. Following up the few glasses she had at the start of the evening, this glass was definitely the tipping point.
She followed Mary with a smile and shouldn’t have been surprised by the careless way Mary danced and commanded the attention of the entire room. She could play it off as an effect of the alcohol, but Lily felt her cheeks burn up an unusual amount. It got even worse when Mary pulled her close and started to dance with her.
Lily didn’t know if it was just her imagination, but she noticed Mary’s gaze dropping quite a few times to her mouth. And other parts of her body.
She was easily distracted from that thought when Mary started belting out the lyrics and just looked so alive. That’s when she was the one to drop her gaze for Mary’s eyes quite a few times.
Lily was having enough fun that she didn’t really mind a lot anymore. All the people bumping into her were just a small annoyance compared to the bright sight of Mary. Her mood started to dim a little when she noticed that Taylor started singing the last chorus of the song. Lily didn’t want the moment to end yet.
It surprised her when Mary placed her arms around her shoulders and sang to her while holding her gaze.
“You belong with me.” The last lyric felt so intimate. Just for them. Mary singing it to Lily. Lily singing it to Mary. Mary dropped her head, so their foreheads were touching and they were all but keeping each other from falling to the ground.
Lily felt the sudden need to kiss her. She hasn’t kissed anyone in the 17 years she has walked this earth and doesn’t understand why she feels the sudden need to.
Mary chooses that exact moment in the middle of her crisis to straighten her body and calls out to get another drink. And Lily very predictably follows her once again.
After both getting drinks which contain way more alcohol than normal liquid, Lily notices how hot it’s inside. “I really need to get some air. Are you coming with me?”
She knows she should probably keep her distance from Mary if she wants to have any control over her actions, even tho the control is already slipping away with every sip she takes of her drink. That doesn’t stop her from wanting to stay close to Mary for some reason. She thankfully nods her head.
“I know a place, please follow me.”
That’s how Lily finds herself in front of a door leading to a beautiful balcony, overlooking the city. A half of the balcony is covered by the roof and consists of a lounge that looks like you wouldn’t want to leave it once you sat down.
Mary leads her to the glass railing, taking her hand and continuing until Lily stumbles over her feet. “Oops.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s just. We are a big high up in the building, aren’t we?”
Mary is apparently a mind reader all of a sudden and probably noticed the way Lily’s face started to pale a bit. “Ah. You’re scared of heights, aren’t you?”
“Nooo, why would you think so?”
Mary merely smiled softly and put her arm around Lily’s waist like it wasn’t making all the butterflies in her stomach come to life. “Do you trust me?”
Lily nodded. Because she did trust Mary. Sure, everyone fell at her feet and she definitely wasn’t embarrassed by it, but she has never been cruel to anyone. And the past hour has been so great that she doesn’t want anything to stop it really.
They walk towards the railing with slow steps and Lily would tell her that they can walk a bit faster, if her heart wasn’t beating so loud in her chest that it could burst out. Maybe it was a smart idea to do this slow.
It took ages to get to the gorgeous end of the balcony, but when they finally got there, she could at least hold onto something. One of her hands remained firmly intertwined with Mary’s still. You could never be secure enough.
“Are you okay? We can go back if it is really that bad?” Concern was heard in Mary’s voice.
Lily quickly averted her eyes from the street which was about 10 floors down and decided to focus on Mary’s face instead. Maybe not the smartest idea, but it did make her feel safer.
“It’s fine. Please just talk to me, so I can be distracted from the thought of falling all the way down. Okay now I’m thinking about it again. How do you even know this place exists?”
They turned a dozen of corridors and crossed small stairs on their way up here. She definitely couldn’t have found it if she hadn’t been here before. Multiple times.
“Well the house belongs to Sirius, who’s basically my brother. I’ve grown up with him and he goes to St. Jude’s. You’ve maybe seen him around there before.”
“Wait. So you do know I go to Constance?”
“Of course I do,” Mary looked downright appalled. “You’re literally in all my classes. How did you think I didn’t know you?”
“You literally just asked for my name. It’s the first time you ever talked to me.”
“See, I asked your name because it was the polite thing to do, since I haven’t had a conversation with you before. Just because you never talk to anyone and always immediately disappears after classes, doesn’t mean I don’t notice you. Because I do. I’m always aware of you.”
In the middle of arguing, they didn’t notice soft spatters of rain quietly falling down from the air. Lily still didn’t really register the rain, even when it slowly started to pour down. Because the only thing her mind was paying attention to, were the words that just came out of Mary’s mouth. A mouth she can’t seem to stop staring at.
Mary stepped back all of a sudden, her face unreadable. That caused her to loosen the strong grip she had on Lily’s waist and hand.
Lily’s eyes went wide when she noticed the loss of touch grounding her. When she stumbled into the railing. When she somehow ended up turning a bit and looking down at the cars all driving around. When she started panicking and flashbacks clouded her head and all she knew was that Mary wasn’t holding her anymore.
It took Mary realizing her fault and trying to fix it by gripping Lily’s shoulders, to get Lily to come back to her reality. Mary slowly led her down to sit on the ground while she just started crying. All of it was just getting too much. The flashbacks, Mary’s words and the alcohol that was still flooding her systems.
“You’re okay. It’s gonna be okay. We’re on the balcony. I won’t let anything happen to you,” murmured Mary while holding her and stroking her hair. Lily felt surprisingly… okay. Mary was just comforting her. After they spent an hour together at some high school party.
“You know, I haven’t always been scared of heights,” she faced Mary, only to see she was already looking back at her. “It was because of an accident with my sister.”
“You don’t have to tell me this, Lily.”
“No, it’s alright. I want to tell you.”
Mary gave her a nod as to say ‘continue’.
“It was a couple of years back. Me and Petunia, my sister, were visiting our grandfather. She was 10 years old and I just turned 12. He remarried rich and has a beautiful house. We were on the second floor, where the guestroom had a balcony as well.
“Pet just noticed a rabbit running through the garden and called for me while she leaned over the railing to have a better look at him. I was looking through the beautiful dresses my grandfather still kept there from my grandmother. I was annoyed and threw a pillow at her without looking.”
Tears started to well up in Lily’s eyes. Mary cupped her cheek and looked at her with dread in her eyes. But did whisper: “Go on.”
“I think she was caught off guard and lost her balance. I only looked up when I was alarmed by her scream. I ran towards the railing and tried to grab her ankle. I was there just in time to prevent her from falling 3 floors down to a fatal death. But she hit her head to the brick wall and that caused severe brain damage. She is half brain dead now.” The last part was just a whisper, that she would be surprised if Mary even managed to hear it.
“Hey. Lily. Look at me. Please, look at me,” came the urgent voice of Mary. She didn’t notice that her eyes started to close. She had to blink several times to get the tears out of her eyes.
It was then that Lily started laughing uncontrollably. “Look at me, dumping all of this on you when we just met each other.”
“Stop Lily,” it was the softness in her voice that got Lily to meet her gaze. The almost whisper. “It was not your fault. Yes, it was you that threw the pillow, but you couldn’t have known. Like you said, you saved her from literal death. It was stupid of your grandfather to leave such young girls alone on a balcony with a dangerous low railing. Petunia wasn’t your responsibility. The adults should have told her to stay away from the railing. It was not your fault. You are as much of a victim as your sister. It was a strong of consequences that led to the unfortunate. You may have been a small part of that, but it just wasn’t your responsibility. Not your fault. You were a kid too, Lily. You saved her from death. How can you still blame yourself after that?”
Lily just stared at her. It was overwhelming, how fierce and soft she was at the same time. How much she genuinely seemed to care. The only thought that existed in her head was just Mary. Mary. Mary. Mary Mary Mary Mary Mary Mary Mary.
Safe. She felt safe.
Mary’s concerned gaze burned her. How a girl like her could actually be like this was beyond her. The queen apparently wasn’t as cold hearted as everyone thought.
See, now Lily calmed down she had to option to pull away. To thank Mary for listening and do the sane thing by just leaving this party. But since Lily didn’t want to do that, there was logically only one other option.
The opposite of leaving. Getting closer.
But since they were already all tangled together, there was only one way to get closer.
It felt mutual, when Lily slightly leaned forward and Mary did the same. It felt mutual, when Lily’s face started to glow and even Mary’s rich brown skin managed to get a red flush.
It also felt mutual when their lips crushed together. When their hungry lips and tongue met and didn’t feel like leaving the other alone.
It was fireworks.
It was everything.
It was- Mary Macdonald. Who was known for sleeping with the whole school and probably didn’t think the kiss was even significant. Just some fun.
Lily broke free of the kiss with trouble, while every part in her body was screaming to just give herself to Mary. But Lily would like to believe she had a little more self-respect.
Great. She was entirely soaked now. It had started pouring and she and Mary- oh Mary. She still looked devastatingly beautiful, with her black curls sticking to her skin.
“I just- I can’t do this. I don’t really feel like being another one of your hookups.” Was Lily’s hurried explanation as she walked towards the door. Only when she tried to open the door, the door handle just didn’t move. No matter how hard she tried to push it down, it wouldn’t budge. “Oh, great.” She muttered under her breath.
“For fucks sake, I told Sirius to fix that door months ago. Sorry, seems like you’re stuck here with me.”
There was entirely no conviction behind her voice. “You probably planned for this, didn’t you? Do you do this at every party or was it just a little convenience that Sirius hadn’t bothered to fix the door.” Lily snapped. She really wasn’t looking forward to spending any longer here with Mary.
“Why does everyone think so little of me?” Oh. Mary was apparently angry. And it was hot. “Believe me or not but I just really brought you out here because it’s beautiful. I wanted you to have a good time, which you certainly didn’t seem to be having. Sue me for just wanting to talk to you.”
Lily just stared. Mary wanted to talk to her?
“Fine. If you want to get out of here, I’ll call Sirius. He better hasn’t left his own party yet to fuck Remus like he always does.”
Mary walked towards her purse that she put down on the table and took her cell out of it. “Great, it’s dead. Does yours work?”
“I put my phone and wallet in Marlene’s purse, so I didn’t have to carry my own.” Lily groaned in defeat. “Any other ideas?”
“Well, if you really want to get away from me that bad you could always jump down those 10 floors.” Mary snarled. Right. Still annoyed at Lily. Look, it wasn’t her fault that she didn’t just kiss and fuck anyone in sight.
“Just leave it. I’ll sit here and you sit over there. Someone is bound to come eventually.” Lily offered.
“No, I won’t just leave it. No one is coming here for ages since it’s such a secluded part of the house. Tell me what about me bothers you so much.” She demands.
Lily really wasn’t looking forward to talking about this. She just wants to go home. And kiss Mary again. She does look hot when she’s angry.
“Look. I don’t care about your lifestyle or your sex life or whatever. That doesn’t mean that I want to be the umpteenth person you hook up with for the fun of it. It actually does have some meaning for me and I rather won’t be some insignificant part of your party life you won’t even remember.”
“You think I won’t remember this? How many people do you even think I hook up with for the fun of it, in your words? If these assumptions are based on gossip girl posts, I will go feral.”
“Well if you don’t talk to me, how am I supposed to know whether the assumptions are true? And you and I both know that no matter the false rumors that are posted, a lot of it is true. So if you tell me not to make assumptions based on gossip girl tell me the fucking truth.”
“Actually I won’t tell you. I shouldn’t have to explain myself for having fun and you have no right to call me a slut over it. I do have feelings for some people I hook up with and don’t for others, but what about it? And why do you even care?”
She took one look at Lily’s face and is now a good time to remember that anyone can read her like a book when she consumes alcohol? Yeah I didn’t think so either.
“Oh,” She started laughing somewhat manically. “This is significant for you, isn’t it? And that’s why you want me to feel bad. Now that’s just amazing.”
In the whole process of arguing, it seemed that they found themselves once again in such close quarters of one another. Lily was currently leaning against the door and Mary’s face was only a couple of inches removed from hers. Lily’s eyes drop to Mary’s mouth and isn’t that just fantastic? Her lips are bruised from the short, but frantic kiss they shared. When her eyes meet Mary’s again, they are set even more furious than before, if possible.
“Lily. Just tell me what you want. If you don’t want me, fine, but if you do, please don’t hold yourself back because of my reputation. I give you my word that I care and don’t just forget this.”
“Just stop talking.” Was all that Lily could manage before her lust took over and her lips met Mary’s once again. And it felt too good. She doesn’t realize how she could’ve pulled away before.
Mary’s mouth tastes like cherry, just like she had imagined. Not that she would ever imagine kissing Mary Macdonald. What didn’t even match her imagination was the way in which they just fit together. Open up for each other. How their tongues explore the other’s mouth and pull small moans out of both of them.
Lily just couldn’t have imagined how right it felt. It doesn’t even matter whether it means anything to Mary, this is an unforgettable first kiss.
It isn’t until much later that she comes back to her senses. It has started getting colder out, so thank god for the thick blankets that Sirius keeps stored under the table.
Lily lays on top of Mary and they’re just lazily cuddling and coming back to their reality after a string of mind-blowing orgasms.
“I was intrigued by you from the moment you stepped foot inside our class, you know?”
Lily was surprised by her confession. Of all she expected Mary to say, it definitely wasn’t this.
“Why did you never talk to me?” Lily murmured back.
Mary looked up at the ceiling. “Precisely because of our argument earlier. I was scared that something like that would happen.”
“I’m so sorry Mary. I didn’t mean to call you a slag or anything. I just honestly wanted my first time to be special and not forgettable. Thanks for not making it that.”
“What?” She reeled back in surprise. “That was your first time?”
“Yeah? Why else did you think I would be so defensive over it?”
“Oh I don’t know. I just didn’t expect it. From you. You’re so beautiful, you know? I wanted to tell you that for a while actually.”
“Oh stop it Mary.” Lily giggled.
It was not long before Mary started laughing as well, but not without reminding her that she shouldn’t put herself down, and she is beautiful.
“Hey Mary,” Lily started after calming down a bit. “I think you are so drop-dead gorgeous. Always thought so to be honest. I- “
Lily was interrupted by the door to the balcony opening.
“Well well well, see what we have here.” Came a recognizable voice from the door opening.
“James?” Lily shot up clutching a blanket to her chest, while her clothes were (very visibly might I add) discarded around the balcony. “What are you doing here?”
“Marlene called me to look for you, since she really wanted to go back to Dorcas’s place. I can give you a ride home, I was just leaving as well.”
Lily turned to Mary with a questioning look in her eyes. Mary nudged her with her elbow. “Go with him, I was gonna crash in Sirius’s guestroom anyway.”
“Okay, fine. James close your eyes.” She and Mary both dressed quickly and went inside the house, with James keeping the door open for them.
Lily turned to leave and Mary saw her hesitating. “I’ll call you, Lily.” She said, rolling her eyes.
“Tomorrow?” Lily cocked her head.
Mary just nodded her head and gave Lily a quick kiss on her hand. “Get home safe.”
James made fun of her for smiling the whole car ride to her house.
