An Introduction
My life has been… interesting, to say the least. My name is Cassandra Lupin, and I am the sister of Remus Lupin. We have a pretty big age gap, 18 years to be exact. My parents died when I was 3. When they were alive, they didn’t do much in terms of raising me. That was the responsibility of my brother. Why they had me in the first place, I’ll never understand. My mother nearly went mad over Remus’ condition, making her unable to raise me on her own. My mother’s madness drove my father away.
Remus did the best he could with raising me, and I have to say, I could not have been luckier to have him as an older brother. For the first few years, it wasn’t just Remus raising me, it was Lily, James, and Sirius too. On nights when Remus transformed, Sirius would be in charge of keeping Remus safe and the Potters would take me in. Since I was young, my memories are faded, but I remember their kindness. Sometimes, I would be stuck with them for days as Remus recovered, and they treated me as a daughter.
Life was fun when Harry was born. I remember the day they brought him home, Remus rushed us to Godric’s Hollow to see him. They let me hold him by propping pillows around my tiny 3-year-old self. Even as a baby, he looked exactly like his father, with his mother’s eyes of course. The picture of myself and baby Harry is still one of my favorite memories. Our time was short together, but the first year of Harry’s life were some of my happiest memories. We were like one happy family: the Potters, me, Remus, and Sirius.
I was four years old when it happened. The memory is faded, but I will never forget the look on my brother’s face. As a four-year-old, all I could understand was that the Potters and my Uncle Sirius were gone, and my brother was sad. Our life and routine changed rather quickly. We began visiting another wizarding family called the Weasleys. Remus needed a place for me to go when he transformed, and Molly and Arthur were more than happy to take me in. What was the harm in one more, they thought? Coming from our small family, it was initially being a part of their family of nine. I quickly was taken under the wings of Fred and George Weasley, since we were the same age. From then on, the three of us were inseparable.
The three of us were sneaky as kids. I was shy and fragile, as they put it, so the plan was always to cry and make a scene about how I didn’t want them to get in trouble after their pranks so that they wouldn’t get punished so badly. Molly and Arthur caught on fast, but they went along, and we continued.
Aside from being a trio with Fred and George, I was quite close with the rest of the family. When the older brothers, Bill and Charlie, were there they saw me as another younger sister and were quite protective of me. Percy, on the other hand, saw me as an extension of Fred and George, and we didn’t necessarily get on well, but he was kind enough. Ron was the most fun to pull pranks on, but was just a sweetheart. He taught me how to play wizards chess, and Fred and George taught me how to beat him. Ginny was the sister I always wanted. When she was old enough, I hung out with Fred and George less to do all the girly little girl things with Ginny. We would have fashion shows, play with dolls, and do each other’s hair. Fred and George did manage to sneak me away almost daily to pull some kind of prank, but I made them promise Ginny was off-limits.
My staying with the Weasleys for Remus’ transformations turned into holidays with them, weekends with them, and eventually whole summer’s with them. Remus often came to visit and have dinners with us, but as a young wizard trying to make his way and manage his condition, he didn’t mind my extended time with them, and Molly and Arthur loved having me.
