Harry Potter-Lovegood and Luna Lovegood and the Sorcerer's stone
Harry and Luna got off the Hogwarts Express holding hands to not get lost in the crowd and made their way to Hagrid as he called other first-years over to the rowboats.
“Hello, Hagrid,” they said in perfect unison as they got closer. At 11 years old, they managed to be exactly the same height and build. Each was exactly 4’11” and lanky, but Luna’s calm, ghostly aura contrasted with Harry’s chaotic and excited one. A set of mirror twins, same in the exact opposite ways.
“Lovegoods!” Hagrid bellowed happily and gave them each a pat on the head before corralling them to the boats. “The thestrals are doing better now, great suggestion on the fish blood, make sure to thank your father for me.” He helped other children settle into the boats as he spoke. “Alright now, in you go. Don’t want to be late, now do we?” His eyes glimmered, remembering his first boat ride when he was 11.
They pushed off into the water, gliding across the smooth water. Around the siblings, the other children chattered and whispered about what they had to expect when they got inside the school. One boy told another that his brothers said they would each have to fight a troll. Other students were trying to figure out what houses they would be in. One boy was asking if anyone had seen his toad. Luna and Harry sat silently, watching the water's landscape surrounding the lake before the castle finally came into view. Luna gasped softly and Harry’s hand tightened around hers.
The little boats docked and Hagrid led the children up the stairs to McGonagal before leaving to the great hall. She instructed us to straighten up and stand tall as she organized them alphabetically by last name, forcing Harry and Luna to separate. As one orderly line, they followed Professor McGonagall into the hall and stood in front of the four long tables. The hat sang a very cute (in its odd grumpy way) and they began the slow process of each child sitting, waiting, and seating. Luna’s turn wasn’t a surprise, she was her mother’s daughter and always valued a strong intellect, she was a Ravenclaw. The names went on until it was Harry’s turn.
“Potter-Lovegood, Harry.” Luna clapped from the Ravenclaw table, though the hat wasn’t on his head yet. They both knew his name was only written as Potter on that list, McGonagal added the Lovegood part for him. Whispers erupted down the tables, a mixture of excitement and confusion. Was this the same Harry Potter, or a kid named after him? Was the boy-who-lived really hare? What house would he go into? Who was the Lovegood family? Did Harry know who he was? As they whispered, McGonagal gently placed the hat on Harry’s head. It was there, twitching and mumbling for a long while. What house does the boy-who-lived go into? Slytherin like Voldemort? Ravenclaw like the other Lovegood girl? Hufflepuff for the peace killing Voldemort brought? Griffindor for killing Voldemort in the first place?
“There’s talent here and plenty of it. A good mind will do well in Ravenclaw perhaps. But a good head overall and priorities, are perfectly suited for Slytherin. Fair, honest, and a little blunt, Hufflepuff would be comfortable support and still give many chances to explore. Plenty of daring spirit, though you have to first be afraid in order to be brave in Gryffindor. Where to put you?”
“Not Revenclaw please, Sir Hat,” Harry whispered quietly. As similar as they were, Harry knew in his bones he wasn’t a true Ravenclaw. “That’s my sister, not me.”
“Alright,” The hat replied softly, still searching. “Slytherin will have your strongest allies and future but I can already see you don’t want them. I still say Hufflepuff would fit well but, you already know so many of their lessons.”
“Gryffindor!” The hat roared out and the Gryffindor table answered by cheering banging on the table. Harry grinned and made his way to an open seat at his table for the next seven years. He nodded to Luna, who nodded back and they turned to watch the rest of the students be sorted. The rest of the night flew quickly through Dumbledore’s speech, dinner, dessert, a half tour on their way to the tower, and a tour of the commons areas. The two siblings had stayed split since being organized for the sorting.
