Jung Hoseok and Forest Funtimes
Finally, January was coming to a close. Hoseok had a hard time believing it was still January, it seemed like a lifetime had passed since he and Jin first met everyone. He was so different, and his entire life just felt flipped.
Jungkook had reached out to him with a letter, saying that now one month was up, so they could go further with their animagus plans. Hoseok was going to be honest with Jungkook, tell him he hadn’t thought about it once, and that there were more important things on his mind at the moment than turning into an animal. Jungkook would understand.
Hoseok walked into the forbidden forest, hands in his coat pockets. When he breathed, small puffs of white air floated around him, before being whisked away in the light winter breeze. He wasn’t entirely sure why Jungkook wanted to meet in the forest of all places, but he supposed it was probably the most private. Even if Hoseok didn’t think they’d go through with the plans, it was safer to be secretive.
He took his time, enjoying the trees and sparkling snow underfoot. It had been a while since Hoseok walked outside of the castle. The last was with Jimin, but really, he had been more focused on talking about his feelings than about nature around him. That was a few days ago, and honestly, Hoseok felt better. He was talking more, smiling, even having meals with the other boys still in the castle.
Which wasn’t a lot seeing that Taehyung and Jin went home.
Hoseok even started going to classes again!
Jungkook, Jimin, and Namjoon all agreed Hoseok had significantly improved. So much so that Hoseok even offered to stay in his own common room last night. Namjoon, of course, immediately shot him down for safety concerns, but Hoseok likes to think it's the thought that counts.
Speaking of which, he really should send Jin a card when he gets back to the castle. Jin went home with Seok Jung for a few days, and he said he’d be returning soon, but still, a card would be a thoughtful gesture. Yes, Jin was fine, but Seok Jung wasn’t in the best mental state at the moment and the family needed all the support they could get.
Maybe he should send one to Taehyung too? Tae went home to get real sleep. The Headmistress decided after the screaming incident the night of the near-stabbing, that Taehyung needed a break. He was failing all of his classes, had no sleep, and was constantly paranoid. Honestly, Hoseok had no idea. Taehyung kept a pretty level face about everything around him, but he must’ve cracked that night because the aurors sent him home at once. They said he could come back when the dreams stopped and his parents deemed him healthy.
Hoseok was so lost in thought about Taehyung, that he almost didn’t notice Jungkook waiting for him behind a tree. The younger boy leapt out and grabbed his Hyung’s arm, tugging him onto a different path.
“Woah, Kook-” Hoseok grunted, being dragged along. “Slow down-”
“Come on! I’ve been preparing this all night Hyung, I wanna show you-”
Hoseok couldn’t help but frown at that statement. Jungkook was preparing something? But Hoseok was ready to give it all up, not work harder on this-
“Tada!” Jungkook said, diving to the ground and doing jazz hands near a tree root.
“. . . uh, what?”
“Dew! Never been touched by the sun or humans!”
“Jungkook, it’s winter, and that’s a tree root. Also, what do we need dew for?”
“To become animagi, duh,” Jungkook said snidely, turning his back to Hoseok. He pulled a small vial out from his coat, enchanting it to float, and then lowering it into the dark and twisted roots below the tree. He scooped up some snow, and removed the vial, making sure not to touch it, and to keep it in his shadow.
“Can you get one of my hairs please?” Jungkook asked, focusing on the vial.
“Like, a loose one?” Hoseok questioned, moving closer.
“No, pick one, just to make sure.”
*tch*
“OW!”
“You said to pick one!”
“Not a whole fucking lock of hair!”
“My fingers are cold, I just grabbed!”
“You’re not making a wig Hyung! Just one!”
Hoseok grumbled and shoved one of Jungkook’s hairs into the vial. The younger immediately closed it, rubbed his head, and then proceeded to repeat his process. This time, Hoseok plucked his own single strand of hair, much to Jungkook’s annoyance.
“Now for the last part-” Jungkook stood up. “Get the leaf out please.”
“Hold on now, Kook-” Hoseok stopped Jungkook who was waiting with his mouth open. “Are we. . . sure we want to do this?”
“You’re the one who came up with it. We were bullied for like, days for being caught in that closet together. Everyone thought we fucked. And now you just want to make it all for nothing?”
“It’s just kinda useless, no?” Hoseok cringed at his own logic. “I wanted to do this to help save Yoongi but. . . he doesn’t need that kind of saving.”
Jungkook rolled his eyes.
“Hey!” Hoseok swatted at him. “I’m still you’re Hyung, even if you think I’m being stupid.”
“I don’t think you’re being stupid, just cowardly.”
“Excuse you. I am not a coward.”
“No, but you backed out! We said we were going to do this, and we put up a whole month of bad tasting leaf-mouth! I hyped myself up to be an animagus, and I’m going to.”
“There’s just so many ways it could go wrong, is it even worth it?”
Jungkook stared at Hoseok like he was crazy.
“What?” Hoseok asked.
“You’re literally the one with a dead housemate. Obviously Hufflepuff was and maybe still is being targeted. Taehyung thought so. You can’t possibly feel safe. If you had an animagus form, you could at least protect yourself or run away better.”
“I don’t feel in danger-”
“Because Joon Hyung is babying you. He feels bad for you and your little broken heart so he lets you hide out in smart haven.” Jungkook paused, and realized his words were a little harsh. “. . . sorry. That came out ruder than I meant. I-”
“No. I. . . I needed to hear it. I figured Namjoon pitied me, but I never thought about changing that. I should. . . I should get him to stop that. It isn’t doing me any good.”
“Well. . .“ Jungkook held up the vials, keeping them in the shade. “I’ve got an easy out!”
“I can’t believe I’m doing this-” Hoseok murmured, pulling out his wand and unbinding the leaf from Jungkook’s mouth. He made it float into the vial, where Jungkook sealed it, and placed it back under the tree roots. They repeated the process with Hoseok’s vial, and when it was under the tree, Jungkook shook a branch above them, making the snow fall on top and hiding any evidence that something was there.
“Come on, I want to grab a quick breakfast and then get to class,” Jungkook said, walking away without looking back. Hoseok wished he was as confident about this as the Gryffindor was. He just couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad might happen, even if this was a good security idea.
“Is there other stuff we have to do?” Hoseok mumbled as they left the forest together.
“We make sure the vials are left alone until the next lightning storm.”
“Lightning?! Kook, it’s January. There won’t be a storm like that for months. The chances of something going wrong is-”
“Pretty high, I know. But we’ll know if it fails. Every sunrise and sunset until the storm, we have to place our wand tips on our hearts and say “Amato, Animo, Animato, Animagus.” After a while, we’ll supposedly feel a second heartbeat, and as long as that happens, we know the spell is working.”
“A second heartbeat?”
“Yep, the animal lives in us now. Cool, huh?” Jungkook smiled, stuck his hands in his pockets and kept walking like he didn’t just lay out their lives for the next four months. Hoseok wished he felt carefree like that, but he just couldn’t. A running list of everything that could possibly go wrong was in his head, and shit, if his mother knew what he was doing, he’d never hear the end. Of course, his muggle mother wouldn’t know what an animagus is, but if she knew it was dangerous? She’d have him grounded till he retired.
“What animal do you think you’ll get?” Jungkook asked in the silence, pulling Hoseok from his thoughts of being hit with a shoe for trying to become an animal.
“Uh, I dunno. I never really thought about it.”
“I hope I’m something super dangerous, like a poisonous snake, or a lion. A tiger would be cool too. As long as I’m not something lame like a parrot, or a rabbit.”
“Mmm, I think you’d be a pretty cute bunny-” Hoseok teased, reaching over and tugging on Jungkook’s ear. “Our little maknae, a cute rabbit. With his big teeth and ears, I could totally see it.”
“Quit it-” Jungkook whined, shoving Hoseok away. “I wanna be a scary, tough animal!”
“Pfff-” Hoseok scoffed. “You just pouted. You’re totally going to be a bunny.”
“Now you sound like Jimin, always teasing me and making fun of my teeth. I’ll have you know I get love confessions everyday. Not a single soul in this school doesn’t think I’m the shit, except you guys.”
“Oh yeah, because getting love potion drugged is a thing to brag about.”
“At least I don’t have a house elf stalking me-well, well, well-” Jungkook paused as they walked through the castle doors. “Look what we have here-”
Namjoon was sitting in an open windowsill, reading from a small book. He was bundled up in a warm coat, paying no attention to the world around him. He looked rather handsome, Hoseok had to think. His shoulders were massive, and his thick glasses that once made him look like an owl, now brought out the color of his eyes and skin.
He wasn’t the only one who saw Namjoon’s handsomeness, because behind the nearest pillar, Teeth stood, silently watching Namjoon do literally nothing. Jungkook gave Hoseok a shit eating grin, and slid forward. He snuck up behind her, ever so slowly. . .
“BOO!”
“AH!” Teeth gasped, accidentally sending magic into the pillar and cracking it. It made a loud noise, and everyone around them looked over, except for Namjoon, who was too stuck in his book.
“Mr.Jeon!” Teeth hissed, furious. “YOU ARE LUCKY THE PILLAR ONLY CRACKED AND DID NOT BREAK, OR ELSE-”
“What? Joonie Hyung would’ve noticed you perving out and spying on him?”
“Teeth was not perving out. Thats is for disgusting Gryffindor boys who can’t figure out theirs sexualities.”
Hoseok snickered at Teeth’s comeback.
“Hey! You’re supposed to be on my side,” Jungkook whined.
“Sorry, but the elf has a point. Hi-” Hoseok waved politely at Teeth. “I don’t think we met yet. I’m Hoseok.”
“Hoseok?” Teeth murmured, looking at Jungkook as if she didn’t believe him. “Yous is Hoseok?”
“Uh, why wouldn’t I be?” Hoseok jokes, and Teeth glares at him. Whoops.
“Mr.Jeon, Teeth does not understand. How can this be the guy that makes the mean one happy? He too. . .” Teeth poked Hoseok’s ribs. “Thin and boney.”
“Hey, I need to be thin and boney for quidditch. And what are you talking about?”
“She’s talking about Yoongi Hyung I think.”
“Wait, you know Hyung?”
“Well, duh.”
“Damn, get roasted by an elf hyung.”
“Shut up Kook.”
“Mr.Min was in the room of requirement when Teeth visited Mr.Park. Teeth saw Mr.Min’s mail was being read, so Teeth brought it for him. But now, he has no more mail for Teeth to collect. Good. That was a waste of Teeths time.” Teeth grumbled to herself, twisting her tea rag clothes.
“But you talked about me like you knew me?” Hoseok asked.
“Mr.Park spoke of you highly. So did Mr.Min.” Teeth yawned, her attention floating back to Namjoon who still hadn’t noticed them.
“Yoongi talked about me?”
“Mr.Min was crazy,” Teeth said nonchalantly. “He wrote to himself much. Always writing letters, especially that one night, when the puff girl had her memory wiped. He wrote many, many letters, then asked Teeth to destroy them. He only kept three. What a waste of scroll and ink.”
Jungkook and Hoseok exchanged a look.
“Did you. . . did you read what he wrote?” Hoseok asked.
“Of course,” Teeth said, not looking at them.
“And?”
“Ands what?”
“What did they say? Did he say where he was going, or why?”
“Teeth no have to tell you shit.”
“Please?”
“Mmmm. . . because yous say please? No.”
“Teeth, come on!”
“NO!” Teeth yelled, and Jungkook stepped closer.
“Tell us what you know elf, or else I’ll-”
“CATCH ME FIRST YOUS STUPIDS RAT SHITS!”
Jungkook lunged forward, trying to grab the elf who vanished. She used magic to shove both boys onto their asses in the hall, and then sent magical flowers and sparkles falling around Namjoon who finally noticed them there.
“Guys? What are you doing here-” Namjoon started to say, but was interrupted when a massive black owl flew through the window behind his head. It landed on the floor in front of Jungkook and Hoseok, standing tall and proud. The owl had an evil, confident aura to it, and Hoseok felt the mean things it was saying in its head about them. Around its foot was a silky black scroll.
“Reginald?” Namjoon asked, unsure. He walked forward and the owl glanced at him, impatiently holding its foot out like it wasn’t its job.
“You know this bird?” Jungkook asked while Namjoon untied it.
“Uh, yeah. It’s Yoongi’s dad’s. I visited their house once and saw him, and whenever Yoongi got howlers, his dad would send Reginald.”
“Is it a message from his dad?” Hoseok asked, unsure why he felt so. . . excited? Nervous?
“No. . . it’s from Yoongi.”
